CYCLE THE BACKROADS OF SRI LANKA

Are great way to experience the country and its people. The food was awesome, i think i ate my own body weight in in delicious Sri Lankan curries. Many of my Sri Lankan friends back home have said i’ve seen more of their country than they have. Some days the cycling was tough but you dont feel rushed to get there and you can take your time. If it ever gets too much you can jump on the bus for a while.

Most Inspirational Moment

cycling through beautiful scenery villages and small towns where the children run up to wave as you cycle pastwhenevery a Sri Lankan person asked you where you had come from or where you were cycling to they would always lose it laughing, they all thought we were mad to be cycling!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suresh is amazing, friendly, so helpful and even when you know he has been asked the same question about a billion times stills answers it like it was the first time. Suresh had so much knowledge about his country and its history. A trip to Sri Lanka would not have been as great without him. He also has the most wonderful giggle!

Advice for Potential Travellers

bring padded shorts/seat it will be your best friend and suncream that is sweat/water resistant and has a high SPF

CYCLE THE BACKROADS OF SRI LANKA

Fun, educational, inspiring and beautiful.

Most Inspirational Moment

1. Reaching the top of the hill in the tea plantation because I never ever thought I would be capable of doing anything like that. 2. The naughty monkeys, perhaps not inspirational but certainly frightening because they were so human. I never thought I'd get that close to nature!3. The people. Suresh and the support team were fantastic and were open to our questions. Everyone would wave as we cycled past and some even thought we were racing! We may have looked the part but that was as afar as it went.4. The moments of quiet contemplation at Lion Rock or at the cave monastery when looking at Buddha.

Thoughts on Group Leader

I thought Suresh was the best tour leader I have ever had! He couldn't do enough for us. Our welfare was always at the top of his agenda. I think it was him that really made the trip for me. He was highly organised and had us organised but you didn't feel like you were being organised at all! I could just relax and enjoy the holiday knowing that everything was in hand. He was good because he was friendly, personable, responsible and fun. He was also very patient with us as many people would ask the same questions as they wouldn't always listen. He taught us a lot about the history, the people and even the wildlife of the country. If every tour leader was like him I would book all my holidays with Exodus.

Advice for Potential Travellers

theonly thing I would advise is that if you are keen to cycle the full distance, whcih I fully recommend, then do make sure you are quite fit. I would class this a little more than moderately challenging if the individual is not accustomed to regular exercise.

CYCLE THE BACKROADS OF SRI LANKA

We found the friendliest people and beautiful scenery on every backroad of Sri Lanka. Enough Km’s to work up an appetite for the fragrant Sri Lankan cuisine and a wonderfully relaxed and flexible itinerary guided by our fearless leader Suresh! Cooler and safer on your deadly-treadly!

Most Inspirational Moment

Whilst fixing flat tyres at a drinks break in a tiny little town on a road to nowhere, one guy in the exodus group started kicking a softdrink bottle around with some school kids in the middle of the road - lots of laughs and fun for everyone. Just proves you don't need much to have a bit of fun!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Great. Knowledgable, friendly, relaxed, flexible, thoughtful, accomodating.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't hesitate to visit Sri Lanka.

CYCLE THE BACKROADS OF SRI LANKA

A challenging adventure in an amazing country with a great group of travelling companions which surpassed all my expectations.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the top of the mountain at Nuwara Eliya after 10 hours on the road and a climb up tp 2000 m. (And I thought I might do the easy option and take the train!)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Brilliant - Suresh was an exceptional leader.  He couldn't have tried harder to ensure everyone was happy.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't hesitate - book the trip now. The country is beautiful and the people exceptionally friendly and welcoming. You will not be disappointed. But this is no gentle, Sunday-afternoon bike ride - it is serious stuff and you need to be pretty fit to complete the 700 km in 10 days.   (The support vehicle is always there if you really need it, but you really don't want to miss any of the amazing routes we cycled through.)

CYCLE THE BACKROADS OF SRI LANKA

An excellent holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

Descending the big hill and riding through Kandy university. It was such a contrast to the busy traffic outside the campus.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suresh did an excellent job. He worked hard to make every moment memorable and his attention to detail was admirable. I recommend him highly.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We went in January which is the coolest time of the year however I struggled with the heat at times. I suggest you bring Gatorade powder or similar to replace body salts etc.

CYCLE THE BACKROADS OF SRI LANKA

This is a great trip.  Cycling is varied, accommodate overall very good.  A lovely country to see by bike.

Most Inspirational Moment

Several great moments inlcuding the tea plantations, whale watching, the elephant orphanage but mostly simply cycling through so many interesting places.  Only one slight negative was the Spice Gardens - ok if you don't a fairly full on sales pitch.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Surresh was our group leader.  He was very knowledgeable, friendly and very helpful.  He couldn't do enough for the group and would do his best to sort out any request - no matter how unusual.  We all loved him.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Some challenging days cycling with the hills so the fitter you are the more you'll enjoy it (and the less time you'll spend in the support van!)

CYCLE THE BACKROADS OF SRI LANKA

A really great trip with a really nice group and a total star in Suresh ‘the big Sri Lankan’ and his team. Sri Lanka is a beautiful island and the cycle route and places of interest visited was a great way to see the country and get a real feel for the people.

Most Inspirational Moment

A combination of a great guide and team, a really nice group, amazing wildlife and World Heritage Sites makes this tricky.....however the multi religious site at Katamgara was pretty insprational as was the Dambulla Cave Temple!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suresh was a total star! Nothing was too much trouble, he was supportive, knowledgable and made the holiday that bit special. Even the elephant jokes were in the best spirit of the holiday!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go and enjoy! However, the time of year we went (January/February) means this will be challenging for some because of the heat and humidity. You do need a good level of fitness for the more challenging rides (or ride in the bus!).

CYCLE THE BACKROADS OF SRI LANKA

My 4th cycling trip, and by far the most enjoyable.  Stunning scenery, wonderful food, long distances big hills.

Most Inspirational Moment

Visiting the Elephant Orphanage was a very moving experience.  Some are victims of the War in Sri Lanka, and are not able to go back to the wild.  I was dubious as I do not approve of caged animals, but these elephants are free.Cycling to the top of Nuwar Eliya.  It was the hardest climb I have ever done, and seriously hurty..  Cycling 102KM, the last 6 in a torrential downpour

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suresh, the group leader was amazing.  He has a very smooth operation going, the trip runs like clockwork.  He would organise wake up calls for each room, and would give detailed description of the day and the next section.  He was super efficient and took all of the organisational stress out of the trip.  He also has a very big heart, and made a very big effort at the end of the trip; there had been 3 birthdays, suresh organised a group cake for the 13 that had not had one.  He had an incredible support team also, all very good humoured and very willing to help.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This has to be on your tick list of "must do" trips.   The fitter you are before you go the more enjoyable you will find it.  Develop a love / tolerance  of curry before you go.

CYCLE THE BACKROADS OF SRI LANKA

A superb trip. Our leader Suresh was outstanding. There were almost no bus journeys, it was cycling all the way. A big plus for me.

Most Inspirational Moment

The general experience of cycling the backroads, seeing the real Sri Lanka.Excellent hotels and food, both local and western

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suresh was outstanding. He was available 24/7, always cheerful and thinking ahead Kept us informed, made sure he interacted with everybody personally, to ensure we were happy and our needs were being met.He went the extra mile whenever it was needed. His backup team were also excellent, and always friendly and positive

Advice for Potential Travellers

It is very hot, make sure you have the lightest gear possible.

CYCLE THE BACKROADS OF SRI LANKA

This is superbly organised, well catered for, has exceptional logistic back-up, well thought through sight seeing and cycling routes and excellent post cycling activities. The fourth cycling holiday we’ve been on and the best in terms of delivery and customer service.  Suresh is a legend, hang on to this "gem", he knows how to ensure your holiday is a fantastic experience.  This cycling holiday has set the benchmark and will be hard to top thanks to Surehsh and his team.

Most Inspirational Moment

I was inspired by a rider who at 58 (and not having had much riding experience), who had suffered breast cancer and leukemia in the previous few years completed the hardest day of the ride doing a 2000m climb to Nuwalia Aya. I was also inspired by Suresh, our Leaders' patience and attention to detail as well as his knowledge and ability to fix up all sorts of issues and problems.  No problem was ever too small for him.  He always put the riders first and himself last.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suresh our Group Leader is just the best.  Words cannot praise his patience in dealing with 14 diverse and sometimes demanding customers.  Nothing was too difficult for him to attend to, he catered for everyones needs, consulted when he thought it was appropriate (eg. food choices) and thought about everyone and their requirements.  Suresh you "rock" big time. Thanks ever so much for making this holiday pleasant, comfortable and one of the best cycling tours I have been on so far.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Advice - take it easy, it's not a race, slow down and enjoy the "journey" and the vivid scenery.  For newbie riders, hydrate, hydrate and hydrate again. A fellow American rider said to us - you Aussies are the Kings of Hydration, we have to be, in 35+ heat in Summer.  Many Northern country riders who haven't ridden in hot countries are apt to get caught out.  Take at least 2 tubs of gatorade/rehydation fluid (available at most western supermarkets) for the 14 days to re-hydrate and chug it down all day with each refill of water.  Take your own bike water bottle as the plastic water bottles used means you'll have to physically stop to unscrew the lid to drink. If you haven't used nappy rash barrier cream (or chamois cream), get some and apply before riding (and at toilet stops), it'll help both male and female riders with chafing - big time.  Take a small back pack to carry and and re-apply 30/50+ sunscreen, plus camera, plus a moist flannel (to cool you down, clean off mud and re-apply sunscreen).  For the ladies, figure out how to use the hose toilets, thy're much more hygienic and cool you down - so practical for Asia
