A TASTE OF CUBA

A trip I’d really been looking forward to, and it still managed to surpass my expectations.   A fascinating place, lots of contrasts, great music, and the trip covered everything on my wish list.   Go now, before it changes too much.

Most Inspirational Moment

So many special moments.   Drinking Coco Loco cocktails in the middle of a national park (made by a man with a machete!).   Lunch at the eco-farm near Vinales.  The visit to Santa Clara and the Che museum.  Wonderful Trinidad and the fantastic music and dancing. Exploring Havana and finishing the trip with the BuenaVista Social Club (more great music and dancing).    

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rayselis was fantastic.   Always had options for us - whether it was going out dancing, trying a family-run palador, or getting a classic car taxi.   She was very knowledgeable and ensured we got enough information so we could appreciate what we were seeing or experiencing.  Totally excelled in Havana when we went to Hotel Nacional for mojitos while driving along the Malecon in classic convertibles.  

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you change sufficient money at the airport as the first hotel would not change Sterling (but Euros was okay).   Few chances to find a bank/exchange.Take every experience going.   Yes its a busy trip and there's not often that you have time to relax, but you can always sleep on the 9 hour flight back to the UK.   Don't miss out on the dancing/music in Trinidad or Havana.The overnight stay at Guajimico is the low point of the trip.   You are in the middle of nowhere so no options for where to eat or what to do.   Try and stock up on some rum before you get there to help pass the evening - a few of us sat out in front of the "lodges" with a few drinks and some music on the iPod and it turned what would have been a grim evening into something a bit more tolerable (well Rum has a habit of doing that!)   

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

Excellent challenging trekking holiday in great scenery.

Most Inspirational Moment

The third day of trekking, slowly walking up the valley and finally seeing the Toubkal refuge.Bartering in the souks in Marrakesh and enjoying a superb and unbelievably cheap dinner in the square.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Abdullah was excellent if perhaps a little quiet. He knew the scenery well and coped expertly with anyone having challenges throughout the trip. He struck a great balance between being the guide and being part of the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Stay on in Marrakech for an extra two nights. The trip doesn't give enough time if you want to go to a few of the sights and to explore the city properly. The hotel with Exodus use is good and very cheap.

WALKING THE GREAT WALL

A very nice trekk on the wall. Mostly on parts not very busy with tourists and a selection of parts showing different styles and condition.

Most Inspirational Moment

The great wall around Jingshanling is beautiful. You can se it stretching around you and far in the distance some watchtowers points out.

We had a very good group leader. He spoke english very well, had a lot of knowledge and work hard to give the group the best possible experience.

CYCLING IN GREECE

This is our 5th cycling trip with Exodus and we feel this is the best trip that we had. We were blessed with nice blue sky every day. The cycling was just right (as we all made the climbs as a team without any stops in the middle); the roads were quiet and scenic; the ancient monuments and sights were great and the food and hotels were both 1st class.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were many inspirational moments on the trip. Being able to cycle to visit Athen's Acropolis, Mycenae and other great Greek monuments etc. is amazing. For me, the best moment must be having the most wonderful dinner on the beech (10 ft away from the calm water edge) drinking Ouzo after a great day cycling followed by a relaxing swim in the sea.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christinana is a most wondeful leader with great attention to details. She planned out everything so well and the whole trip went without a hitch (no mechanical problems, no waiting around and always, always abel get us to a great restaurant and have the most wonderful food in the evening). She is a great cyclist and we feel so safe cycling as a group with her. The trip turned out to be something like a "foodie" trip as we sampled different type of local food every day. Because we were quite a fast group + we managed to cycle together, we even managed to have time to go for a swim for most days.Christos is also a great cyclist and he looked after us well too and we really appreciated that the luggage were loaded and unloaded daily without fuss and he also get us really yummy trail food and ice cold water enroute which was wonderful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't forget your camera as the historical sites were wonderful and great to visit. We were lucky to have 7 days of blue sky so make sure you bring plenty of sun cream and drinks lots. We also had plenty of chances to go for a dip (the hotels we stayed in either have a pool or right by the sea) so swiming custumes and flip flops are useful.

INCA TRAIL & THE AMAZON RAINFOREST

Great experience and got to see alot of Peru in a short space of time. Enjoyed every minute of the trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

The jungle was amazing, night walks and then staying in the lodge. Also the canopy tower was great for sunrise. Inca trail was very hard but worthwhile, especially seeing Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate. Also the food the chef managed to cook us was so tasty!

Group leader was good despite us having alot of questions and having to sort out a few things at the beginning of the trip. Good knowledge during the Inca Trail

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you take crisp dollar notes for Peru, as they wont take any that are torn or damaged. The trip notes do underestimate how difficult the Inca Trail is, as its a long 4 days walking mainly uphill so be prepared for that. You see alot of Peru which means its none stop from the minute you arrive, whether its planes, boats or buses their is alot of travelling

CHIANTI: WALKING & WINE

Our first Exodus trip and it won’t be the last. A very good taster for finding fitness levels and gauging whether or not this holiday type is for you.

Most Inspirational Moment

Some of the views across the Tuscany hills and valleys are amazing. A patchwork of vineyards, hill top towns and a spattering of red poppies. In the background a cuckoo. In Siena we had The Baptistry chapel to ourselves and could see Donatello's font panels at close hand. Amazing after learning about them years ago in A level Art.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ale pitched the level very well. He was always happy to chat with anyone and everyone at breakfast, on the walks or at dinner. He had excellent local knowledge and guided us towards some hidden bars and restaurants. He managed to keep the trip seeming fresh and new which is a rare skill. Any problems were solved quickly and amicably.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is a great starter trip if you unsure whether Exodus is for you. The group got on well right from the pick up at the airport. No one minded who they sat with on the minibus or at meals. Singles and couples were all happy to get on without feeling space or privacy had been invaded. There was always a good atmosphere when we were out together. The walks were a good distance for a casual walker 10-12k without too many steep hills. The guide made sure we took sensible breaks and waited for stragglers.

THE INCA TRAIL

The Inca Trail was amazing, it was everything I expected it to be and I’m so glad I finally ticked it off my bucket list. The trek was fantastic. I thought I’d love Machu Picchu more, but I didn’t – the walk was definately the most exciting part. 

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to the sun gate after 4 days of hiking up and down Inca steps. I didnt think that was the end and thought I had hours to go but then Machu Picchu was there in front of me. I'll never complain about walking up the stairs at work ever again. The campsite on the 3rd night was beautiful and waking up to alfresco breakfast (the porters took away the breakfast tent) surrounded by mountains was amazing. My favourite day was the 3rd day hiking through the cloud forest with steep sided ridges and rocky paths, I wish this day would last longer. The porters were fantastcic and woke us up every morning with smiles on their faces and coca tea and cooked delicious 4 course meals every day. 

Thoughts on Group Leader

Wilfredo was great. He was forever telling us Inca stories and made sure the group had chance to socialise together and spend time apart. He recommended delicious restaurants and bakeries and promoted ethical tourism by showing us local artisan shops and taking us to weaving villages so we knew our souveniers were locally sourced and made. He made sure we were all safe on the trek and having a good time, even after walking 4 long days he went to the town and got ingredients for pisco sours because we all wanted to make some. He encouraged us to learn some Spanish and Quechua - even if the only words I remember are 'basos' and 'sulpayki'. He has set a high standard now for all other tour leaders to follow, whichever trek / trip I book next. 

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take trekking poles and try and do some trekking first to get used to rocky, uphill terrain. Take proper hiking boots. For the ladies - the toilet is a bucket and a plastic bag - either learn how to squat properly or take a shewee. Also spray on hair shampoo, baby wipes and talc came in useful. Take spare camera batteries - you will take lots of photos and there is no electric on the 4 day trip. Ear plugs are good idea - the tents are pitched close together sometimes and you will hear your fellow campers snoring. 

GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Holiday seemed to get off to a bad star , i paid £200 plus for the pleasure of travelling Americian Airlines, certainly was not a pleasure, Luggage was lost some where in Maimi and couldnt be found, ground rep for Exodus could have helped me more . if it hadnt been for the excellant hotel staff i would have came home at that point. Was advised by rep at 5pm to go and buy cothes etc as luggage wouldnt arrive before my 7 night cruise, she failed to tell me shops closed at 6pm. I had a knock at my door at 4.30am porter with my luggage . just an hour before i was leaving for air port to fly to Galapagos Isles. At that point i felt my holiday began ! Marks out of 10. Exadus reps 4 out of 10. hotel staff 11 out of 10.

Most Inspirational Moment

There are too many to mention ! the day the Orca whales played with the small boats tied to the back of the Cachalote ! seeing all the different species of Birds ! especially the blue footed Boobies dance on last day! The sally lightfoot crab eating a puffer fish! the white tip Shark jump out of thewater beside our boat ! The seals refusing to move when you wre trying to land ! so many to mention .

Jaun was excellant, very knowlegable about the area! and the nightly briefings were so interesting and funny ! his dancing and singing skills were memorable too. 

Advice for Potential Travellers

Dont consider to long just book it ! The Cachalote cabins are quite compact so I would advise not to take lots of luggage and use a soft bad that can be stored under the beds. After all that musch to see and do dont spend much time in your cabin. I am a veggie and the food the chef prepared was brillant! so much so most of the guests rolled of the ship. 

THE HIGH INCA TRAIL

A challenging trek with some steep climbs. The 8 days saw us camping and trekking in rain, wind, snow and then beautiful clear blue skies.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the top of Dead Womens Pass and then a few days later arriving through the sun gate. 

Thoughts on Group Leader

Bobby was very knowledgable and very friendly and helpful. On the Cusco part of the trip he seemed a bit disorganised on occasion but I think this was due to discrepancies between the trip note itinery and the actual itinery he was able to offer. He gave everyone his contact details and on one occasion when it was free time to explore and I found myself lost I gave him a call and he responded immediately, he then came to 'rescue' me. 

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take waterproof clothing whatever the brochure/trip notes say the weather will be like! I had taken the trip notes saying there could be the 'occasional downpour' literally and I didn't take any waterproof trousers. After 2 two days of continuous rain I was almost out of dry clothes - luckily a fellow traveller had spare waterproofs he lent me (thank you John!).Budget for the tipping on the trek part of the trip. Again, the trip notes guide on tipping and advice given to travellers by Exodus staff varied a lot and on average we put about £130 each into the tip kitty.At Lima airport after you have collected your luggage, you need to exit the building and then walk back into the check in area of the airport to check in for the flight to Cusco.  

KERALA & TROPICAL INDIA

This was my first group cycling holiday and I really enjoyed the experience of cycling with others and having very experienced guides with us at all times.

Most Inspirational Moment

The trip was very varied with lots of cycling but mixed with cultural experiences and plenty of delicious food. A fantastic way to see Indian life and soak in all the sensory explosions of colour, taste, noise and aromas.Getting to the top of Ooty hill up 36 hairpin bends was an inspirational moment even if it did take over 4 hours while others took 2 hours but kindly waited for us with tea and cake at the top! 

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader was very calm and efficient and we had excellent support from both him and his co leader and our lovely support driver who was always there with a seat in the bus, water and snacks to keep you going.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would advise anyone with a fairly good level of fitness to join this trip, and go with the flow and start ringing your bell as soon as you hit any town traffic, keep your eyes open and enjoy the amazing scenery which I can only describe as vibrant.
