Say hola to Buenos Aires, where our adventure kicks off.

The excitement builds during our welcome meeting, in which we get to know each other a little, discuss important information about the days ahead and ask any questions you might have. Details on where the welcome meeting is held should be at the hotel reception.

After, we join the tour leader for an introductory walking tour of the city. The evening is free for you to visit one of the many excellent restaurants in the capital.

Want more time to explore? Extend your adventure in Buenos Aires by adding a pre-tour hotel stay through your sales representative.

Accommodation: Hotel Eurobuilding (or similar)

Fly from Buenos Aires to El Calafate this morning and transfer (approximately three to four hours) to the small mountain town of El Chaltén. The town has a beautiful location in Los Glaciares National Park with breath-taking views of Mount Fitz Roy and the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

Accommodation: Hosteria El Paraiso (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast
Patagonian Highlights

Set off for a day of trekking amid the incredible mountains and valleys of Los Glaciares National Park, taking box lunches with us.

We start with a hike to Mount Fitz Roy Base Camp with views of the massif ahead. In the afternoon, we come out of the forest to trek up to Laguna de los Tres, a glacial lake whose still waters reflect the three main peaks of the range. This is a challenging full-day trek over fairly rough terrain with impressive, rugged scenery along the way.

Please note: There is the option to shorten the day’s trek by ending at Poicenont Base Camp, where you can enjoy views of Mount Fitz Roy. The rest of the group continues to Laguna de los Tres – those staying at Poicenont can either wait there for the group or return to El Chalten with a guide.

Accommodation: Hosteria El Paraiso (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch
Patagonian Highlights

The morning is free for you to enjoy an additional short trek near the town or spend time relaxing.

Around 2pm, we transfer (approximately three to four hours) back to El Calafate.

Trekking option: 9mi (14km), six hours

Accommodation: Hotel Rincon del Calafate (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

Visit Perito Moreno Glacier today, a jagged ice sheet that stretches more than 3mi (5km) across Lago Argentino and rises 200ft (61m) out of the cold waters. It is the fastest-moving glacier on the planet and the eerie creaks and thunderous groans add an atmosphere of anticipation.

Every so often, an office block-sized chunk of ice calves from its face into the water below before slowly floating down the lake as an iceberg. An optional boat trip gives an even greater appreciation of the immense scale of this wonder.

Accommodation: Hotel Rincon del Calafate (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Dinner

Spend a second day in El Calafate to explore. Take a gentle walk along Lago Argentina to see the birdlife, including flamingos.

Alternatively, join an optional excursion to Todo Glaciares – this navigation includes Upsala Glacier, Bahia Onelli (where glacier pieces float in the water) and the Spegazzinni Glacier.

Please ask your tour leader and they will help you to arrange it.

Accommodation: Hotel Rincon del Calafate (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

After breakfast, we drive (approximately eight to nine hours) across the border into Chile before arriving at Torres del Paine, one of the most beautiful national parks in the world.

Please note, due to local regulations we must change buses at the border.

We may have time for a short walk next to Laguna Amarga or Laguna Azul, which offer panoramic views of the Paine Massif and the granite Horns of Paine.

After, we continue to check in at our hotel.

Accommodation: Hosteria Pehoe (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Dinner

Without a doubt, one of the park highlights is the hike up to the base of the Torres del Paine. The walk itself is beautiful, trekking primarily through forests along the Ascencio River valley.

This is a challenging full-day trek (with a boxed lunch included) and the last section is steep with rocky terrain, so you need a reasonably good level of fitness and confidence.

Adverse weather conditions can make this walk much harder; however, your tour leader will give a trek briefing and answer any questions you may have.

Once we finish the trek, we transfer (approximately two hours) to Puerto Natales.

Please note: We also offer a shorter version of this trek – ask you tour leader for details.

Accommodation: Hotel Saltos del Paine (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch

Enjoy free time this morning before we transfer to the small town of Cerro Sombrero, in the northern reaches of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago.

The journey (seven to eight hours) takes us through dramatic scenery and includes a short ferry crossing over the Strait of Magellan – take plenty of snacks and drinks.

In the evening, enjoy dinner together at the hotel and relax before we visit the end of the world tomorrow!

Accommodation: Hosteria Tunkelen (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Dinner

Hop into our private bus for the journey (approximately seven to eight hours) to the southernly city of Ushuaia, which is often called ‘the end of the world’! A box lunch is included today.

Heading south, we see the most southerly part of the Andes before catching our first glimpses of Ushuaia. We should arrive at our hotel mid-afternoon, depending on weather conditions and traffic.

Accommodation: Hotel Tolkeyen (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch
Patagonian Highlights

Spend this morning in the stark wilderness of Tierra del Fuego National Park, walking among varied terrain, flora and fauna. In the afternoon, there is an optional boat ride along the Beagle Channel to see marine wildlife including penguins, sea lions and many species of water bird. We also enjoy fantastic views of Ushuaia and its backdrop of often snow-capped peaks as we head out on the boat. Please ask your tour leader and they will help you to arrange it.

Accommodation: Hotel Tolkeyen (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

Depending upon the flight schedule, we may have free time this morning in Ushuaia. There are magnificent views from the hills leading up to the Martial Glacier and some small shops to pick up souvenirs. Ushuaia has just one museum, housed in the former prison, which is worth a visit. We fly back to Buenos Aires and usually arrive in time to visit one of the excellent tango shows in the old quarter of San Telmo (optional) or enjoy a last group meal together.

Accommodation: Hotel Eurobuilding (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

The main adventure comes to an end today. Bid chau to each other and begin your return journey home. Alternatively, speak to your sales representative to extend your stay in Buenos Aires.

Iguazu Falls Add-on Tour

Patagonian Highlights

To the far northeast of Argentina, boarding Brazil, lies the magnificent Iguazu Falls (or Iguassu). Add four days to your trip to experience this awe-inspiring sight. Staying on the Argentinian side, you can wander around this Unesco World Heritage national park packed with flora and fauna. In the heart of the park, you will find the not-to-be-missed cascading waters. You can also get up close to the falls by taking a boat trip as an optional extra.

The detailed itinerary is here, or speak to your sales representative for more information.

Essential Information

This trip is graded Activity Level 3 (Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings, visit the Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip, please contact us.

Itinerary: We feature two classic Patagonia treks, one in Los Glaciares National Park (Day 3) and one in Torres del Paine National Park (Day 8). Both are full-day treks that have a section of steep and rocky terrain, which makes both treks graded as Challenging.  We recommend you have reasonably good fitness levels to maximise your enjoyment of the trip. On each of those days, we also offer a shorter trek option that takes in each park’s scenic beauty but at a more moderate pace. The highest point comes on the hike to the Torres del Paine, at the lookout point at 2,907ft (886m) above sea level. All hikes are non-compulsory.

Internal flights: There are two domestic flights included which are based on a set flight schedule and cost. Depending on flight availability at the time of booking, there may be a supplement to pay. If applicable, this will be communicated to you at the time of booking. Flight times are subject to last-minute schedule changes.

Drives: In addition to the two included flights, we have some long drives to enjoy the sweeping views of Patagonia. The longest drives are when we cross the border from El Calafate to Torres del Paine and when travelling south from Cerro Sombrero to Ushuaia.

Chile

Travellers from the UK, US and EU normally do not need a visa to enter Chile. Please note, visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.

Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.

Please note, a PDI tourist card will be given to you by migration at the border, upon arrival to Chile, and asked for upon departure from Chile (please retain this important slip of paper). The PDI certifies that you are a visitor and must be given back to migration upon departure from Chile.

The hotel front desks will request your passport and tourist card – it is mandatory for the hotel to make a copy of both documents to provide the VAT exemption for foreign tourist. Failure to provide this means you have to pay the 19% VAT. They might also request your credit card as a guarantee for expenses not covered in your reservation.

If you are travelling via the USA and are eligible to transit under the Visa Waiver Program, you are required to register in advance for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). There is a US$40 charge, which is only payable online.

Please note: not all nationalities have the same eligibility for travel to or transit via the USA, and you may not be covered by the Visa Waiver Program. Regulations stipulate that any person who has travelled to Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen since March 2011, or have dual nationalities of these countries, may no longer qualify. In addition, if you have travelled to Cuba since 12 January 2021 you will not be eligible for the visa waiver program and should instead apply for a visa.

If you are in doubt of your eligibility, please check the visa requirements with your local US embassy.

Hotel breakfasts are normally buffet-style and are included. The accommodation arranges packed lunches for trekking days. There is a variety of good-quality food in local restaurants and cafes. Vegetarians are catered for throughout the trip, but please advise us before you travel so we can make arrangements on your behalf.

We schedule our Patagonia trips between October and April to take advantage of the longer days and warmer temperatures. During these months, the temperatures in Buenos Aires reach a maximum of 30C (86F); in El Calafate/Torres del Paine/Punta Arenas around 15C (59F); and in the extreme south, Tierra del Fuego, 14C (57F). These are the daytime maximums, and the average temperatures are likely to be a little lower than this.

In Patagonia, the nights can drop to freezing point, but often remain just above. Patagonian summers tend to be dry although rain cannot be ruled out, particularly in the mountainous regions along the Chile-Argentina border where you might experience all four seasons in one day! Patagonia is renowned for being windy… and sometimes very windy (dress accordingly and watch your step).

In Patagonia, the changing weather is part of the adventure; however, in extreme wind/weather conditions our tour leader may modify the itinerary for safety reasons.

As a certified B Corp, we’re on a mission to improve our social and environmental impact across all our adventures.

We do this through our innovative Thriving Nature, Thriving People plan.

This ‘nature positive’ approach is designed to help nature and communities thrive in harmony through practical solutions, such as reducing carbon and waste on our trips, supporting conservation projects through the Exodus Adventure Travels Foundation, and rewilding 100 square metres for every Exodus traveller.

Stunning scenery

Absolutely stunning scenery but a lot of travelling and very little choice if vegetarian. Iguazu falls should be included if you can! Trip notes very out of date, allow for much higher prices for optional activities and tipping.

Most Inspirational Moment

The optional glacier trip was stunning, as was the optional penguin island trip

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sadly new to the role and had little knowledge to impart, but appeared to have a wonderful time taking selfies

Advice for Potential Travellers

Trip notes were very dated re pricing, expect to spend more. If you don’t eat meat there was really very little choice at some of the places visited. If you are looking for souvenirs don’t leave it to the end as Ushuaia and Iguazu had very little choice.

Go, go, go!!!! The scenery is unbelievable. And if there is any way the Iguazu Falls extension is a MUST.

This is my second trip with Exodus and I could not be more pleased. Already planning my third. The Iguazu Falls extension was over the top fun! The tour leaders that Exodus works with were all exceptional. Pamela with Aqua Grandes in Iguazu. In Patagonia on my lesser hikes, both...

Most Inspirational Moment

Private hike with my Tour Leader, Pepe Valdivia. I was unable to do the two longest hikes, but Pepe found me my own challenging mountain. Shorter distances to travel, but inclines steep enough for me to feel the mountain.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Pepe Valdivia. BEST MOUNTAIN GUIDE EVER!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go, go, go!!!! But the wind ... my hardest hike was a flat walk to a waterfall at Los Glaciers. Winds were 70-80 kmh. I literally had to hold on to my guide to keep from falling over.

A 'must do' trip that you'll never forget

Exploring the dramatic, captivating and beautiful Patagonian landscape in two short weeks. The weather ranged from windy, cold, to warm and sunny all in the same day. For those of you who are into photography you're in for a treat. Did I tell you about the wind?

Most Inspirational Moment

Perito Moreno Glacier is absolutely breathtaking. Torres Del Paine National Park is well worth the climb - we were lucky with the weather

Thoughts on Group Leader

Pepe was a superb leader. He was well organised, personable, flexible and catered for the differing needs of the group members

Advice for Potential Travellers

The costs for meals were more than the trip notes suggest, an evening meal was typically around £30 ($35). Most places, even the most remote shops and restaurants accepted debit and credit cards (always say which type you have before you tap to pay as it may be declined otherwise). Wear insect repellent when walking in Tierra del Fuego National Park (the last day in Ushuaia) as there are plenty of hungry mozzies!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tomas Toro was very supportive and helpful

Advice for Potential Travellers

Prepare well before holiday to enjoy it fully . For many weeks before the start of our holiday we walked for 2 hours in morning and 2 hours in evening whenever we could . However , this was not enough aswe practiced on flat ground and we found it tough walking uphill in Patagonia . Be prepared for very strong gusts of wind .

Great location, tour leader and weather - what more could you wish for!

Lived completely upto expectations, wonderful country. WE didn't experience any adverse weather conditions which made all the walks and hikes pleasurable. I've never eaten so much lovely steak and lamb, and the wine was fabulous and very well priced. The blues of the glaciers were stunning.

Most Inspirational Moment

The challenge of walking upto the lake next to Fitzroy, and seeing it out of the cloud. Well worth the long slog up!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tomas was just the best guide you could have asked for on this trip! He was companionable, thoughtful, knowledgable, caring and great company. I would suggest that you use him as a model for all your guides - no negatives at all

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be properly aware of some long journeys in the minibus on the second half of the trip. Also that the two 'long hikes' are definitely only for serious walkers and can't really be classed as 'moderate' due to their duration and steepness in parts

Suggestions

The hotel in El Chalten was very basic with a poor en-suite - there looked to be far better places to stay in this nice village. The location of the hotel Pehoe in Tores del Paine was fabulous, with wonderful views. However, the food in the hotel (and the packed lunch they provided) was very poor - definitely not a highlight!

Good

A great holiday with stunning scenery and interesting walks.

Most Inspirational Moment

I loved the Torres del Paine Trek.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Luciano was very caring and diligent, amusing and knowledgeable. We all enjoyed his company and he made sure our holiday was a success. He communicated with us well. Good wine knowledge too!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't underestimate the trek to Fitzroy base camp. For us the day was very long and very hot. Make sure you are properly fit and well enough to do this. Some in our group were not. Buy snacks, fruit etc when you see it because it's not always easy to find. Keep it ready for your hiking days.

Suggestions

For me, the days spent going all the way down to stay in Ushuaia were not the best. I would have preferred more time in the Torres del Paine National Park and more walks here. The trip notes were clear about the long travelling days but it felt like we'd gone here just to say we'd been to "the end of the world". The hotels and hostels were generally adequate but we felt Hosteria Don Atilio in El Chalten was really sub standard. Perhaps we were unlucky with our room which was very small and gloomy (a double and a single bed crammed in), far too hot, had nylon sheets (awful) and most things in the bathroom and bedroom were broken or missing. The people who worked there seemed lovely but we found the accomodation here quite depressing. If the sun hadn't been shining it would probably have been even worse.

Simply Amazing

A holiday of a life time. My mind was blown at every turn. I have never been on Exodus holiday before but am hooked for life. Xavier our guide the whole trip was excellent. So lucky to get someone not only organised but had a wonderful personality and nothing was...

Most Inspirational Moment

Mount Fitzroy Moreno Glacier Penguins Iguazu Falls The views generally

Thoughts on Group Leader

The best. Exodus is lucky to have him. Don’t lose him whatever you do.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Couple of tips. When walking ten hours - Mount Fitzroy take a water pack ie a tube that you can sip on frequently. I got heat stroke that day and think this would have been a much better idea to keep permanently hydrated. Of sun out that day. Keep back of neck cool with damp cloth which you can regularly dip in all the streams you pass climbing up. Lots of snacks for energy. Also if exodus are to stay in Puerto Natales again as we did. There is a wonderful museum at the. Hotel Singular And the most amazing lunch. 5 star it was amazing . Some people might not want to climb Torres Del Paine like me and this is brilliant. The hotel is so unique . Something you might find in Europe and it is built in old meat packing factory but has kept it authentic and the history there is really interesting. Museum attached . Also another museum in port natales as well which is interesting.
