Beautiful Country, Beautiful People

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing Portugal with Exodus. Our tour guide Carla was everything you hope a tour guide to be. She was knowledgeable, articulate, funny, motivated and immensely proud of her country. She helped us experience all the beauty, history and traditions of Portugal. She taught us about the people, the pride and promise of this beautiful place. Along the way every day we explored a new city, hiked a new path, drank fabulous wine and dined on amazing local foods.

Most Inspirational Moment

The most inspiring moments came from people and attitudes about preserving Portugal. Both Carla, our tour guide and Alberto, our driver were so proud to share their country and customs with us. It felt like we had been invited into their homes as a treasured guest.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Carla was a phenomenal leader, she kept us moving, made sure we arrived before the crowds, arranged for us to experience the most important aspects of a place and fostered a friendship and bond that made each day more enjoyable. Her genuine warmth made us care more about the country, people and our group. We truly loved spending time together, exploring new sights each day.

Highlights of Portugal

This action packed week was an excellent overview of Portugal. The highlight of the trip was our guide, Carla Costa, whose knowledge of the history, places and Portuguese culture brought the whole experience to life.

Excellent! Not only was Carla extremely knowledgeable of the history, geography and culture of the country, but also professional and very well organized. She showed caring for every group member no matter what their needs were. Carla puts her all into this trip and goes above and beyond every day.

Be prepared to walk - some cities can be hilly!

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Portugal. We learned so much and definitely got to see a lot of the country in a short amount of time. Our tour leader, Carla Costa, was absolutely brilliant!!!

We really liked spending the night in Obidos so very close to the castle walls.

Carla Costa was the best leader we could have asked for. She is so knowledgeable and you can tell she absolutely loves her country. She answered all of our questions and was a delight to be around. She’s a very positive person and truly made our trip that much more enjoyable!

Packed-full of Portugal

This is a full-on itinerary providing an intensive experience of the history and culture of Portugal. History, churches, stunning landscapes, wine and food, our wonderful enthusiastic leader Carla packed it all in!

Most Inspirational Moment

I can’t choose just ONE!! The delicious meal of shrimp rice in the simple family-run restaurant set us on our way; visiting a winery and the boat trip in the Douro Valley; or the ancient city of Coimbra where we crammed in the historic University, a fado performance, a Roman wall, and the ancient city gates; or the O.G. pastel de Belém which genuinely was SO much more delicious than any of its imitators!? Don’t make me CHOOSE!

Carla is a fantastic tour leader. She is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about every aspect of Portugal, her joy is truly infectious. She is so hard-working, making the itinerary work, adapting to local circumstances, setting our visits in context, and making sure to include everyone in the Group. Brava, Carla!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Comfortable walking shoes *with good grip*…. there is a lot of walking - the streets of the cities and towns we visited are steep and uneven in places, paved with ancient cobblestones worn shiny over the years, and these are extremely slippery even when dry.

A fabulous holiday , a fascinating country and an amazing guide

This was a really interesting country- many aspects of the history and country surprised me. We saw beautiful countryside, extraordinary churches , lovely towns. The food was delicious as was the wine.
Carla was an incredible guide- knowledgeable and who went above and beyond consistently

Most Inspirational Moment

I loved visiting Porto-fabulous buildings. Meeting the students at Coimbra- they looked straight out of Hogwarts with black clothes and cloaks. Batalha was a very small town where we spent a night. The monastery was extraordinary.

Carla was excellent. She is a history enthusiast who had a great deal of knowledge and understanding of the history of the people and places we visited. Carla was very well organised, managing a very full itinerary. She booked restaurants for us every evening among many other thoughtful touches. Outstanding

Advice for Potential Travellers

There is quite a lot of walking so wear comfortable shoes. The food is delicious- avoid tight clothes!

Fabulous Trip!

We were so pleased with the Highlights of Portugal Tour, September 29-26, 2026. Our guide, Carla, is passionate about her country, its history, architecture, culture, gastronomy and the people. We learned so much from her and had fun doing so.
As we were a larger group it would have been helpful to have an audio system since it was sometimes difficult to hear Carla due to extraneous background noise.

I think Carla's knowledge of Portugal is inspiring. She knew each monumental place we visited inside out. The buildings were all inspiring and filled with so much history. It is a beautiful country.

Carla Costa is an incredibly knowledgeable guide. It was a full on history lesson when Carla each place Carla brings you. She made very good use of the kitty money by not just getting us into different places, but also let us experience local treats.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It can be very hot and sometimes there is walking on uneven ground for much of the day. All places for meals with the group takes credit card and very few small places you find on your own take cash only. Tap water in Portugal is safe, but expect to pay for water otherwise. Food items automatically places on the table are charged to you if you start consume it. You have to option to turn it down and they will take it away and you won't be charged.
