Amazing trip

This is a very active trip and full of different experiences. Max in Head Office provided excellent advice and customer service before the trip. It’s actually a trip of 2 halves. The first week is spent hiking in the Western Ghats, with 4 nights camping. For me, this was probably the highlight. Each hike covered different types of terrain/landscape, and as others have mentionned, you need to be reasonably fit. But don’t worry if you don’t feel up to a long hike on a given day- you can sometimes do a shorter one or just relax. The guides were fantastic, and they even carried tiffin boxes on the treks for us to enjoy a full lunch ! The food on camp was out of this world- seriously some of the best food I’ve eaten in my life, creatively prepared by the executive chef and his small team in the middle of nowhere. Unbelievable! The second week is more of a sightseeing extravaganza, with several long 5/6 hour coach rides, as per the itinerary.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking to the top of Mt Meesapulimala Madurai - to experience the buzz and frenetic pace of a big Indian city, as well as the temple of course! The kindness and hard work of all the staff involved. They all went above and beyond what was required in so many ways to make this trip truly enjoyable and memorable.

Thoughts on Group Leader

San was the best group leader ever! He made sure everything went smoothly, sorted out any problems and entertained us with his knowledge of Kerala and India in general, along with personal anecdotes around campfire !

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take everything on the trip note list, but also a 3 pin round plug adaptor for India, and some eco baby wipes plus small soap bars for camping. Make sure you sanitise your hands after you've touched anything and everything (money, seats, toilet handles/doors etc) - that way you'll minimise the risk of getting tummy problems! The water on the coach is filtered, and at camp is always boiled, so fine to drink, but otherwise use a water filter, even for hotel water. I bought a Grayl Geopress which I used all the time and never got sick. If you are unhappy about anything, don't keep it to yourself-just talk to San and he will do his utmost to fix the problem. The hotel accommodation ranges from really good to a bit basic- we only asked to change rooms once. The toilets for 2 of the night camps were holes in the ground within a tall square tent and soil to shovel over the contents-great to get back to nature! If you want to change money once you arrive at the airport, you'll need to take cash. For £200, the commision was around 2% .Otherwise,San will take you/direct you to the nearest working ATM. As we hadn't booked the group flight, we also used the pre paid taxi service which worked well- even at 4 am- and cards are accepted for this service.

Excellent ride and scenery and great guides but very cliquey groups

What prompted me to write was returning from another excellent trip with a different company where the group was constructive and the guides understood the needs of the group. The Porto to Lisbon ride with Exodus was rather different. There were several couples who were delightful but went off on their own at dinner. The other folk who were travelling on their own quickly formed a clique leaving out one woman and me. Some nights we eat on our own and other nights we went out together. The guide and the driver though good at their jobs chose not to go out to eat and didn’t understand Group process. I’d happily go on another exodus trip where the group eats out together like the other company I often go away with.

Most Inspirational Moment

Beautiful scenery and the Portuguese are very kind and friendly.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Great but didn’t understand Group process.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Even if you are a friendly person you may find yourself excluded if the group is cliquey.

Reply from Exodus

We’re grateful for Cathy for taking the time to leave a review, and are glad to read that she enjoyed cycling across beautiful Portugal. However, we are sorry to hear that she didn’t feel her group gelled as well as she had hoped; while from our experience our trips attract like-minded, sociable travellers who bond during the time they spend together, and we find that Cathy’s experience is a rare one, we do regret that she felt this way during the trip. We would like to mention that on all our trips, our groups go out to dinner together on most nights accompanied by their tour leader, though on some days we leave the evening free for travellers to make their own arrangements if they like, with their leader’s help. We are confident that Cathy would have a much more positive trip if she travelled with us again, but we have taken her comments on board, and have spoken to our local team to remind our leaders to facilitate a sociable atmosphere within our groups as best they can, and to provide support if necessary.

The title says it all

We arrived in Port Elizabeth and meet our tour leader., Andrew Lindsay. He was excellent, made everyone feel welcome and gave us a brief overview of our trip. During the next 11 days we had a great adventure. Starting with Addo Elephant park, followed by a superb Safari organised by Andrew. Everything during the trip was very well organised, Hermanus, Stellenbosch, Cape Town, Table Mountain, Robben Island, staying at some lovely places and having the knowledge of a South African guide was incredible. If I have any criticism, is that some of the accommodation was probably not 3/4 star as suggested. However, due to the enthusiasm and positivity of Andrew the holiday was a wonderful experience of South Africa’s Garden Route.

Most Inspirational Moment

The safari was probably my most inspirational moment of the trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andrew Lindsay was excellent, very knowledgable, patient, organised and enthusiastic.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack light, take binoculars, take every opportunity available.

Marvellous Experience

Thoroughly enjoyed this trip, our guide Anh Vuong ensured every detail was covered and we packed in so much whether it be cultural, gastronomic or memorable experiences. Many additional activities on offer ie. Cooking class, street food tour, cultural island cycle ride to name a few, we believe we had a taste of every aspect of Vietnam life from north to south, contrasting city experiences, rural life and the amazing Mekong Delta and Halong Bay. All hotels were very good and we were welcomed everywhere we went from restaurants to peoples homes and places of work, Anh’s hard work and delightful personality was infectious and appreciated by all. The people of Vietnam have suffered so much yet they hold no ill will and are enthusiastic, warm and welcoming.

Most Inspirational Moment

The atmosphere Mekong Delta and Hoi An were excellent.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Anh was brilliant, her cultural and historic knowledge was very good and delivered with humour and sincerity, nothing was to much trouble and everyone felt great affection towards her within days.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for early starts and pack for multiple hotel changes.

Amazing Trip.Don't hesitate

This was probably one of the best trips l have ever done.Eight of us became the Fila Family and we were all Seniors!! As the trip went on we became experts in spotting a Happy Hour 2 for 1 in any town we stayed in.The proposal to remove the water bowser for a beer barrel however fell on deaf ears…………not that seniors can drink……………. This was very much an up and at it tour so no lie ins. Food was really good and great value.Fila was always available to give us advice.Insects for dinner? No problem for these Seniors!!! After dinner we went dancing with the locals.Sorry the men watched on and the girls danced. What a moment. So many great times. Fila kept us in order and always had the hand sanitizer on tap………………..(in house joke) He was a mind of information and was very proud to show us his home town of Siem Reap and of course Angkor Wat. Seniors get up and go!We were all 60-70 and we completed the tour of Cambodia on the bikes……….(There’s a joke there) Go now. This country will change dramatically in the next couple of years. The Cambodians are a lovely people considering the pain and suffering they have had to endure.(Killing fields) So what is stopping you???

Most Inspirational Moment

1.5 course fish lunch in Kep Fish Market for peanuts, but superb.Straight from the sea. 2.The two night stay on the lsland. 3.The salt fields. 4.Guests and eating with a Cambodian family.(A must) 5.All the markets.Arriving on bikes and trying to speak ANY Cambodian was appreciated and great fun.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fila is probably one of the best tour guides l have had the pleasure to be with. His English was superb, and his knowledge of his country outstanding.Throw the guide books away!! He went out of his way to help us. We became his family and he always made sure we sanitzed our hands............ Found out a lot about him and his family. When we did have an issue on ironically the last day he was very professional in dealing with the bike accident in a calm and safe manner. You need to look after him............

Advice for Potential Travellers

Cambodia has sold it's soul to China who are pouring money into the country to develop the infrastructure and tourism. IF you want to see a mess look at Shihanouk. THe beauty of this country will be gone in the next couple of years and replaced with highrise hotels aka Benidorm So the moral of the story is GO.You will not regret it.

Brilliant.......

Had a fantastic time in Sri Lanka, Ruwan our tour leader and his team were beyond excellent, couldn’t do enough for you and always with a smile. We were warmly welcomed everywhere we went; the food was lovely and the cycling fabulous. Although we had a couple of tough days everyone was able to go at their own pace and do as much as they felt they wanted to do. The trip was fully supported so when the cycling got too much you could always stop and get on the bus for a rest. The trip offers great variety from important cultural sights, wildlife, fabulous scenery, beaches and so much more.

Most Inspirational Moment

Personally completing the 100km cycle day..... further than I have cycled before.... and seeing blue whales :)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ruwan was fantastic, always smiling, very knowledgeable of his country's history, culture, and fauna. Exceptionally generous with his time and nothing was too much effort. He and his team worked exceptionally hard behind the scenes to ensure that everything ran smoothy.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you're thinking about it and unsure.... don't be, just do it.

A Nature Lover's Paradise!

This is a trip that packs in a lot! Moving from the Caribbean coastal rainforest, across the centre of the country via the mountainous cloud forest and then down to the Pacific coastline, there is ample opportunity to see some of the fantastic bird and mammal wildlife that is all around you. Every day there is something new to see.

Most Inspirational Moment

Lots of great moments. The sunrise boat trip along the waterways of the Tortuguero National Park was astonishing. Hunting the elusive quetzal at sunrise (only partially successful) but then having a great encounter with one later in the day, not to mention an amazing snorkeling trip on the Pacific Coast.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alejandro Rodriguez was a great leader. He was very well organised, communicated arrangements clearly and dealt with minor issues as they arose. His wildlife knowledge was outstanding as was his ability to constantly spot birds, lemurs etc at the top of trees. I don't think there was ever a question he couldn't answer!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for some very early starts most mornings. It's a bit of a shock at first, but you quickly get used to it and end up going to bed quite early! The rain forest can be very wet as well as warm and humid, and I was very glad I had taken a fairly substantial poncho which could be worn over a backpack. Walking sandals and trainers/boots are needed. In addition, the early morning quetzal hunting is very cold, needing warm clothing including a hat and gloves. Also take light, cover up clothing for evenings in the rain forest, when the insects come out biting!

Not great

This trip needs to be looked at and to be honest an exodus person needs to be sent out on it. The itinerary needs to be changed for the colder months, and some parts of it should probably be cut out all together. Also the freelance guides that Exodus are using need to be looked at. The guide for this trip did the bare minimum, nothing that he said was engaging or captivating and certain parts of the itinerary (e.g the argon oil farm) were an after thought for him and he was counting the minutes until we were back on the coach. All in all it was a pretty forgettable trip and really quite disappointing

Thoughts on Group Leader

Not great. He didn’t seem to care that we were there.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Maybe book a different trip.

A Gem of a trip

A fantastic trip, action packed from start to finish. Our Guide Lam and his team worked tirelessly to ensure everything went to plan, which it did. Great cycling days interspersed with a mix of other activities. Vietnam is a beautiful country with warm friendly people and interesting food along the way. I can’t think of a better way to spend two weeks. Memories to treasure for sure.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling over the Hai Van Pass.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lam was the best guide one could wish to have. He was so knowledgable about all aspects of Vietnam. His smile and affable demeanour touched us all. Also a great cyclist who rode every step of the way with us. He was supported by a great team who kept us refreshed along the way.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for an action packed schedule from start to finish.

Kerala Cycling

Great variety of riding, lots of different terrain and views. Excellent guide.

Most Inspirational Moment

Down hill from Ooty!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Safi was extremely knowledgeable and very experienced. Was always calm and gave a great briefing for next days program and before each section of the rides.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get a local sim card on arrival. Do some hill training for the 19 switchbacks up to Ooty!
