A WEEK IN JORDAN

A fantastic trip covering the "must see’s" of Jordan. The tour was very well organised with good accommodation and trasport. The Jordanian people were very friendly and welcoming and it felt perfectly safe. I would definintely travel with Exodus again and very much recommend this trip to anyone especially if you are looking to "experience" Petra, rather than just tick it off a list.

Most Inspirational Moment

Too many to pick just one.....but walking the back way into Petra to the High Sacrifice (stopping on route for baklava kindly offered by our leader) was a privilege. We then spent time just sat looking over Petra, enjoying the moment. More special moments were spent in Petra at the Monument, drinking mint tea at one of the several view points (you cant miss the big "view" signs) and being shown a bedouin cave. And not forgetting falling asleep under the stars in Wadi Rum

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sami was knowledgeable, interesting and all done with a lot of humour! He encouraged us to ask questions (dont be fooled by the "10 questions per day" limit) and was happy to share from his personal experiences. He was always happy to support the group with our requests and was very keen on ensuring we got the best service possible.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take layers if travelling out of summer - temperatures can vary and can be cold at night, although we were lucky to have very warm days and mild evenings. A thin scarf is great for protecting your head and shoulders from the sun (in spring/autumn, a hat would definitely be needed in summer), or protecting your face from the wind and sand/dust if necessary. Sturdy trainers or lightweight walking shoes are recommended for Petra. At minimum take a sleep sheet for Wadi Rum - blankets are provided if you don't have a sleeping bag but its personal preference (and if going in colder times it might be very welcome). Also take baby wipes and a torch. Sleep outside but use insect repellent, and ear plugs (even if you sleep in the tents you can't block out your fellow travellers snoring!)If you are a diver take your diving license as there should be opportunity to dive if you wish (we got to dive from the snorkelling trip which was a bonus). Don't expect the worlds best diving though, although it was enjoyable and good value Dont shave the day of the dead sea visit - you get this advice in your joining meeting but by then it might be too late ;o)  Be prepared for a dry(ish) holiday where alcohol is concerned. Not all restaurants will sell alcohol and if they do expect it to be expensive.

ICELAND NORTHERN LIGHTS

Iceland is an amazing country with some very dramatic scenery.  Although a short trip, we packed a lot into the time available.  Seeing the Northern Lights (as we did) is undoubtedly a bonus – but even if you don’t get an Aurora sighting, the trip is still very worthwhile.

Most Inspirational Moment

Without doubt the glacier day.  We awoke to bright blue skies and sunshine.  The walk over the glacier was amazing.  Because of the excellent weather conditions, we were able to spend longer on the glacier than usual and also got a lot closer to the glacial lagoon.  Next stop was the glacial lagoon from "the tourist side", and then down to the beach to see the icebergs.  After an action-packed day, there was just time to pop into the small museum before a sustaining meal.  It was then off again in search of the Northern Lights, which we were fortunate to see.  A perfect end to a perfect day.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Petur was a great guy with a wonderful sense of humour.  He was willing "to go the extra mile" to ensure that we got the most out of our relatively short trip.  He was full of interesting information and told us lots of tales - we even watched "The Deep" on the Iceland Air flight on the way home, after hearing his story about "a troll".

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take LOTS of warm clothing.  Practise with the manual settings on your camera before you go.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

A great and varied week in an interesting country.   Although classified as leisurely/moderate we seemed to be on the go all the time.    Highly recommended

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra is an amazing place and definitely needs 2 days to do it justice.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sami is a character,  that's for sure.  He gave us a great insight into life in Jordan,  and was happy to debate and listen to others views.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do take a sleeping bag with you, and sleep outside at Wadi Rum.   You could leave the sleeping bag on the bus all week if you wanted to free up your luggage a bit.    Do also do the camel ride.   Everyone enjoyed it,  and what a place to ride a camel!

ICELAND NORTHERN LIGHTS

Wow, what can I say, it was brilliant!!! My first group holiday and I definately chose well.  Glacier trekking was awesome, we were lucky to have fantastic weather on this day, we also saw the iceberg lagoon and yes, later that evening we saw the Northern Lights too.  While in the East we stayed on a farm which was located in front of mountains and just in front of the ocean, a beautiful setting!  Petur the guide was great, incredibly knowledgeable about Iceland – past and present, we had all sorts of stories from him about the Vikings, he was a good laugh, oh and he has a very large box full of nibbles on the mini bus, this went down very well! 🙂  .  Caving was great too, but I was very nervous as I’m not good with small spaces, you didnt have to do the caving, but Petur reassured me and looked after me the whole time, definately worth doing! All together an excellent holiday, there’s some travelling but lots of stops to see waterfalls and sites, oh and the food was good too, especially the trout at the farm, yummy.  The whole experience was that good that I’m planning my next holiday with Exodus already.

Most Inspirational Moment

Glacier trekking, absolutely loved this, it was difficult to take in the views around you, it was like you were in a picture postcard, so peaceful and beautiful and very breathtaking.  Everytime you looked up (you had to concentrate where you were walking) you just simply said to yourself.....WOWWW!!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Brilliant!  Looked after everyone, was fun and interesting too.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take salopettes, it's not on the list of items to take, but you do need them, most people had them and were greatful for taking them.

ATLAS DESCENT

A sublime experience .
Beautiful scenery.
Wonderfully organized.

Most Inspirational Moment

Each day had its fair share of exhilirating moments.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Beyond reproach . Alex was funny, professional and dedicated.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you are fit!

SIERRA DE AITANA TREK

A strenuous but very rewarding week of hiking led by an enthusiastic local guide. Good food and comfortable accomodation.

Most Inspirational Moment

A wonderful full body massage after some very challenging hiking. We did this trip 5 years ago and were so impressed we decided to do it again (we don't usually repeat a trip). But 5 years, two unreliable knees and a dodgy hip combined to cause some problems for me. I decided to forgo the hike up to the highest peak and after the first, easy 3 hour walk, sat in a sunny glade with my book to wait for the rest of the party. I figured I had done it once and had nothing to prove. I spent an enjoyable few hours chatting to passing hikers and bikers and one very elderly gentleman who wanted to try out his English. He could read English well but didn't know how to pronounce most of the words - we both had fun guessing what the other was saying.

Thoughts on Group Leader

In a word - excellent. Jose Miguel is full of enthusiasm for this part of Spain - his home. Committed to the rural way of life and sustainable living. Very adaptable when the weather wasn't on our side.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take heed of the trip notes - this is not an easy stroll.Sadly, the weather was not as kind in March as it had been in late January 5 years ago when the sun shone every day. Be prepared for some rain in early season.

VIETNAM ADVENTURE

A wonderful introduction to the history, culture and present day life in Vietnam.  However, it was quite city based and we felt that it would have been good to have had more opportunity to experience the countryside as well.

Most Inspirational Moment

Halong Bay - even though it was misty!  This added to the atmosphere in a strange sort of way. I loved Hoi An.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent - very knowledgable and good fun. He sometimes spoke a little bit too fast for our aging hearing.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for quite an intensive agenda, but above all enjoy it!

DISCOVER COSTA RICA

The magical forests and critters are out of fairy tales, the landscapes breath taking and the diversity of the countries flora as only before seen in the tropical aisles in garden centres.  The people always smiling and pleased to assist.  A proud nation in a beautiful country – a true gem of our earth.

Most Inspirational Moment

Having only seen one hummingbird in my life, I was smitten with the amount and variety available throughout Costa Rica.  When one took nectar from a flower in my hand and in my hair, I was hooked on these endearing, delicate and colourful birds.

Thoughts on Group Leader

So passionate, eager to pass on his experiences and knowledge, a proud Costa Rican.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go ... you will dream of it the rest of your lives.

PETRA & WADI RUM TREK

A sensational, well balanced and well thought-out trip!

Most Inspirational Moment

For me, the starry skies in the desert. I know that will sound odd on a trip that took it the magnificent sights of Petra but, most of all, I enjoyed the quiet peacefulness of the desert.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was Zuhair and he was very good. He kept everything running smoothly and possesses a wealth of knowledge about his country and the region.

Advice for Potential Travellers

(1) Because a lot of other reviewers had pointed out that sand gets in your boots I took and wore gaiters every day and that was very effective in preventing that particular problem. (2) Even if you're somewhat afraid of heights (as I am), make the effort to steel yourself to walk across the the natural rock bridge at Jebel Burdah ("the arch of Burdah"). (3) Learn some short stories! If you are fortunate enough to have Zuhair as your group leader he will regale you with stories and folk tales over the camp fire. It would have been nice if we could have returned the favour but we couldn't come up with anything remotely as in-depth or entertaining.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

The overall organisation of the trip was really good. It is a scenic route, our team of porters were amazing, as were the assistant guides. A character building experience!!

Most Inspirational Moment

The most inspirational moment for me was looking back at the pictures once back in England. It all seemed so surreal during the trip for one reason and another!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

What can I say about our group leader?? He lacked compassion, and lacked the ability to communicate effectively with the group. He was rude on a number of occassions and was insensitive to our individual needs. Not the best person to have alongside you in a challenging environment unfortunately.

Advice for Potential Travellers

To make sure you take poles, shorts, and a sun hat. You gear up for the cold - but make sure you are equiped for the sunshine!
