Bergen Bergen
Fly to Bergen
Fly to Bergen and transfer to our hotel. After our briefing we have a guided tour in the evening in Norway’s beautiful second city.

Start Bergen
The adventure begins in Bergen. We’ll have a welcome briefing at the hotel helmed by our leader, then head out for a guided tour of Norway’s second city.

Ferry to Sogndal; visit of Urnes Stave Church and transfer to Nes Gard
In the morning, we have a short transfer to Bergen pier where we board the ferry to Sogndal. Although this is not a cruise, it is a very scenic journey into the Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in the country. On the way from Leikanger to Nes Gard we will stop in Solvorn and take a short ferry trip across the fjord to visit the 12th-century Urnes Stave Church, a UNESCO-listed landmark with traditional wooden architecture and a heavenly fjordic backdrop, where we will have a guided tour.
Back in Solvorn, we have a 20-minute (approximate) transfer to Nes Gard, our hideaway in the fjords for the next three nights.

Warm-up walk to Molden peak, an excellent viewpoint for Sognefjord
After a short transfer, we start the week with a lovely warm-up walk to the top of Molden Peak (3,360ft/1,116m), where we can marvel at the profound chasm that is Sognefjord.
Molden is often called the finest viewpoint in Sogn, with an amazing fjord view. With 1,970ft (600m) of elevation gain over 2.6mi (4.2km), the path is neither too steep nor strenuous. The trail to Molden’s summit is very well marked with signs. Halfway, we stop at Svarthiller, where we get the first scenic views of the fjord.

Transfer to Jostedal valley; walk and boat trip on glacial lake; optional glacier walk
After breakfast, we have an approximately 40-minute transfer to Jostedal National Park, the home of Jostedal glacier, a mammoth ice cap covering vast swathes of the park itself.
It has nearly 30 glacial arms and today we visit two, starting at Bergset glacier, a mighty ice wall covering the upper part of Krundalen valley. We then walk to Nigards glacier, getting so close it’ll feel like you can almost touch it.
If you’d like to get even closer, you can join an optional guided walk on the glacier, using crampons and an ice axe to help you navigate.

Hike into Mørkrisdalen Valley
Today we hike into Mørkrisdalen, one of the most scenic valleys in Norway. The walk starts in a narrow canyon dominated by a waterfall. As we continue, the canyon opens into a wide valley of moorland with wildflowers and traditional Norwegian summer cottages.
Afterwards, we say goodbye to Nes Gard and transfer (approximately 1hr 30min) to our second hotel in the fjords, the Fjærland Fjordstove Hotel in Fjærland. This hotel has an incredible waterfront location with panoramic views of the glacier.

Walk to Anestølen and Lake Tverrdalsvotni
After a short morning transfer (approximately 20 minutes), we begin our walk by following a mostly flat gravel road which offers panoramic views of the Barnakona peak. We will arrive in Anestølen, which is a summer farm for goats and enjoy our lunch while our tour leader tells us stories about how farming life has evolved here over the years. There can be up to 600 goats each summer. Afterwards (and a chance to take selfies with the goats), we will continue on the same path until we get to Lake Tverrdalsvotni. The second part of the walk after Anestølen is a bit steeper and rocky in some sections. We return back down along the same path and continue our walk until we meet our transfer vehicle to take us back to the hotel.

Visit the Norwegian Glacier Museum; Besshovden hike
We start the day with a five-minute transfer to the Norwegian Glacier Museum, an angular slice of modern architecture backdropped by the ancient mountain peaks. Here we enjoy a fascinating insight into the local landscape, the glaciers and how the climate crisis is impacting them.
After, we have a 10-minute transfer to our start point for today’s hike. The walk is one of the most popular in the area and when we reach the top of Besshovden mountain, we see why. From the summit, we enjoy majestic views of the Fjærlandsfjorden fjord and the Jostedalsbreen glacier. During summer, you may even see people securing hammocks to spend the night under the stars.

Ferry through the Naerøyfjord (Narrow Fjord); Flåm railway to Bergen
After breakfast, we have a transfer (approximately 2hr 30min) to Gudvangen and take a ferry through the Unesco-listed Naerøyfjord (Narrow Fjord) – a real highlight of the trip. The excitement continues immediately, as we jump on the Flåm railway to Bergen, regarded as one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. On arrival in Bergen, we take a 10-minute transfer to our hotel.

Transfer to the airport; fly to London
Depending on the time of your flight home, you may have another chance to see more of Bergen. Those on group flights will leave today for the flight back to London.
End Bergen
The adventure ends in Bergen after breakfast. You can begin your return journey home, but if you’d like a bit more time to explore the city, speak to your sales representative about extending your stay.

Getting to the start hotel
The start hotel is approximately 30 minutes’ drive from the airport. Exodus provides one group arrival transfer from the airport, which is timed to coincide with the arrival of a chosen flight from London, UK. You may join this transfer at no extra cost, provided you can be at the airport before the transfer leaves. Speak to your sales representative for the group arrival transfer times or alternatively you can make your own way to the start hotel by using local public transport or by catching a taxi.

Catching your return flight
There’s a group departure transfer to the airport for customers who Exodus booked onto a chosen flight to London, UK. Please speak to your sales representative if you wish to join. If the group departure transfer does not suit your flight time, you can also make your own way to the airport by using local public transport or by catching a taxi.
Full joining instructions including local emergency numbers will be sent to you as part of our Final Joining Instructions. If you do not receive these at least a week before departure, or require them earlier please contact our office or your travel agent.

Hotel & Guesthouses
You spend two nights at a hotel in Bergen and six nights in a guesthouse and hotel in the fjords.
Nes Farm, on the banks of Lustrafjord, is a private guesthouse. Double rooms have private bathrooms, while single rooms are two-bedroom private apartments with shared facilities. All the rooms are different and are individually decorated. Some of the rooms have a sloping ceiling.
Fjærland Fjordstove Hotel is on the waterfront in Fjærland. It is a former guesthouse, converted into a hotel in 2012. It has 15 rooms, all with views of the fjord or mountain.

As a first time hiker I was worried about what to expect from this trip but I shouldn’t have been. Spent a truly amazing week hiking varied and incredibly beautiful landscapes, interspersed with some breathtaking ferry trips. The pace was manageable (although I did start with a good base fitness) and there were often options to shorten or lengthen walks depending on capability but this was always optional. Nes Gard itself is a truly special place and perfect for an escape from real life. Waking up to the view of fjord everyday was such a contrast to living in the UK. The staff at Nes Gard are lovely and evenings were spent eating fab local food and then drinking and catching up in the bar with new found friends. This is the perfect holiday if you want a break from reality, a chance to unwind and to see some truly beautiful scenery as well as the chance to make some amazing friends.
Most Inspirational Moment
There are too many to really mention but the two stand out moments were getting to the top of the mountain on the first day and looking down over the Fjord. The sun was shining and the water was an incredible turquoise. Our group had laughed and bonded all the way up the mountain and there was a huge sense of achievement at the top. The second was on the last day at the waterfall. We'd all spent an amazing week with each other and there was a poignancy that it was our last day together. The waterfall was magnificent and the scenery breathtaking- it was my favourite hike and it was sad that it was the last.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Anders was a really fantastic group leader. He was knowledgable, kind, funny and you knew you were safe with him. He went above and beyond to spend time with the group, flex the schedule to take is to the bakers for cinnamon buns and overall look after us. He never pushed anyone to their limit and took time to understand the individual needs of the group.
Advice for Potential Travellers
You do have to have a base level of fitness for this trip to really enjoy it. Some of the ascents would be tricky in the rain and the terrain is full of rocks so you also need to be steady on your feet. That said in out group there were 4 people over 70 who managed just fine and had a great time!
Stunning Norway Hiking
Nes Gard Farm, what “a little gem” of a place to stay for the week. The team, food and wine pairing option was truly amazing at this special place which was also surrounded by incredible scenery. The evening hike briefings for the following day took place either in the charming wine cellar or wonderfully converted old cattle shed with a drink or two to start the evening off before our delicious three course meal was served up each evening including locally sourced ingredients where possible and the option for wine pairing with each course. Being September we were particularly lucky with the sunny warm blue skied weather with no rainfall all week. Each day we set off on a very different hike led by our fantastic guide Anders. No one day was the same and the scenery truly breathtaking. We got an wonderful appreciation for all Norway has to offer in terms of views and what an incredible first visit to this beautiful country we had and we we would love to come back to the country in the future.
Most Inspirational Moment
The trip highlight for us was the glacier walk as we had not done one before, my partner only wished it was longer as it was such a fun experience to do. The photos on the Exodus website truly do not represent how stunning this country is with some extremely memorable hikes.

Our guide Anders was a very good guide. He held an evening briefing every night before dinner. He used the briefing to get feedback about the hike of the day and if there were any problems. He then covered the details for the next hike,providing information about departure time, distance, terrain, weather and hike time length. The briefing allowed guests to ask questions and get sound advice on clothing, equipment and food/water to bring and on the last day offered an shorter route alternative during the hike for some of the group.
Advice for Potential Travellers
We would recommend the glacier walk option in the itinerary if you have not done one before. There was a lot of boulders on some walks and so we would recommend bringing walking poles if you use them.
Hiking the Fjords
A level 3 moderate rating but the owner of NES Gard, Anders, really isn’t tolerant of those clients who are slower than his expectations. To my mind, all clients pay the same so we are all entitled to enjoy the experience and not be made to feel we are not up to the trip. The trip is open to anyone so if Andrrs only wants qualified mountain hikers, this should be made clear at the point of booking or Exodus should appoint a guide who can deal with all abilities
Most Inspirational Moment
I enjoyed the optional glacier walk - we had a very charming and supportive Nepalese guide. Really outstanding. It was a great experience to get up close with glacier ice and experience the beautiful blue colour. The first day on the Jostedalsbreen National Park was stunning - we were walking on snow in August!
Thoughts on Group Leader
Anders is the owner of NES Gard as well as the guide for most days. He certainly runs the trip along his own principles rather than as you would expect an Exodus trip to pan out. He is quite intolerant of slower walkers to the point of making them sit out or turn back unsupervised on a walk as the pace is holding back the elite walkers. In my opinion if you want to run a group for mountaineers, you need to specify at the point of booking and only accept bookings from qualified people. I paid 3k as did others so we were entitled to full participation of the walks on offer. There was a walk in the Mykkersdal valley which is very dark and gets no sunlight and in addition on this day it had rained all night and all day so the rocks were very slippery and there were lots of boggy patches. So at lunch in a clearing, Anders picked people out to turn back as they could not keep pace. I wAnted to continue but was told to turn back. There were 4 ladies and one very concerned man who was also a doctor, accompanied our group. The terrain was very tricky. Unfortunately we seemed to take a wrong path as the markings were not obvious and we got some way before realising this route was not correct. We carried on a bit further as we thought it might come out at the carpark but then decided to turn back. Meanwhile the elite group had got back to the bus to find we had not returned so Anders set out to find us. There was no phone signal in the valley so our messages had not been received and if anyone had had an accident, we had no way of contacting anyone. Also Anders did not carry a satellite phone for emergencies. This really was not an acceptable regard to the health and safety of the clients and Anders should not have split up the group. Usually Exodus guides stop frequently for catching up and normally take the opportunity to tell clients something about the history or geography of the area but Anders didn’t seem to have any such information to share. I did not learn anything about the history or mythology of Norway from Anders or the geology
Advice for Potential Travellers
Don’t go on the trip unless you are A frequent hill or mountain Walker or walk on uneven terrain at a fast pace. You might come home feeling you failed to keep up. The terrain really is very uneven and you might have to scramble over rocks on your front occasionally . That said, the scenery is stunning!

Lukas's passion for his country shone out and enthused us at the same time. He adjusted the programme sensibly to cope with the variable weather we experienced.
Advice for Potential Travellers
We had sun and rain, so be prepared. It was also a little wetter underfoot than some other trips we've been on. Definitely not sandal country.
Hot week in the Fjords
Our trip coincided with a rare heatwave in Norway. This was great for evening swims in the Fjord with amazing views and freshing water! The guesthouse is very lovely with nice evening meals. If you are a keen walker you may be disappointed on the amount of hiking on this trip – there are only two days when you do full day walks, the other days are half day hikes and other activities or travelling. The range of scenery within an hour of the guesthouse is fantastic – from glaciers to high snow capped mountains and the more mellow fjords and waterfalls. Our leader Lucas was great but we didn’t have very good briefings either at the beginning of the week or on the next day’s activities. Sometimes, it was unclear what was happening until we were actually doing it..

Advice for Potential Travellers
Take a lunch box and water bottle if you are keen to cut down on your plastic use. It was rather disappointing that despite Exodus's pledges on reducing plastic, one of the very first things that happened on this trip was everyone being given plastic bags and bottles to make day 1 lunch. Ask for a detailed briefing at the beginning of the week. Take your swimming gear - this is not on the trip notes. The guest house has a small pier with sun lounges and steps for swimming if you are lucky with the weather.
Walking the fjords
A stunningly beautiful adventure exploring Norway. Such a great variety of treks and landscapes led by an excellent, v natural guide who is v passionate about his country. If you love trekking and the outdoors, then Norway should be on your bucket list!
Most Inspirational Moment
Every day was different offering a wide variety of treks on different terrains, seeing an amazing variety of landscapes - you really get a real taste of what Norway has to offer trekkers. We scrambled over rocks to get quite close to the mouth of a glacier, peaked Mt Molden above the clouds, walked through the dreamy green valley (still a few ups - not all flat!) and even trekked through a bit of snow in the mountains. We also had a few ferry rides too so we got to experience the fjords close up (a couple of us even took a dip in the 'refreshing' fjord back at the guest house). A well paced tour - not too quick, not too slow and great bunch of travellers to share this experience with.

Einar was a brilliant and v natural leader. He knew the area extremely well and took great care of the group, his passion for his country always shining through. Led an excellent pace that suited everybody and encouraged a v supportive environment where everyone helped each other.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Ensure your fitness level is suitable for this grade of holiday (Exodus training guides are a great starting point). You are trekking every day with many upward slopes (you get the great views tho!). There are options given for some days e.g. you don't have to scramble over all the rocks at the glacier if you don't want to etc. The pace of the days are good and it's a supportive walking environment (not all of it is up slopes). Take waterproof boots - we walked over boggy ground and through streams - and ankle support is advised as you will walk on quite a lot of uneven ground. But above all - enjoy every moment! It's a spectacular place to trek in and you cram a lot in the five days of trekking. Walking poles are useful too for those not blessed with a natural sense of balance!

Asbjorn is an an exceptional guide and also a very nice man with so much knowledge and experience. Sadly he is looking to retire which will be a shame to miss all of those stories, but he is currently training his replacement Lucas, who I think will make also make a great host/guide. We found them both very helpful & approachable as well as being very knowledgeable of their environment and locality. An real asset to this trip.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Do not under-estimate this trip. This is a hiking trip, not walking. Many of the hikes are quite a bit longer than the notes imply and you will be expected to scramble a little as well as doing a lot of walking on very uneven ground. This is all fine if you're used to this & expecting it, but be warned.

Nes Gard Farm is a fantastic place. The meals were fresh, healthy, and delicious. Each day we traveled to a new location for hiking. The people in my tour group were great – 8 women and 3 couples. Everyone was game for adventure and being active. Our tour guides were knowledgeable and very personable.

Advice for Potential Travellers
Be prepared to hike on uneven terrain and smooth rock surfaces. Trails are steep and often slick. I was cardio fit but I did my conditioning on groomed trails. The glacier walk is very challenging. Gaitors are highly recommended to pants clean.
Lovely time!
I had a lovely time in Norway. During the day we were kept busy with hikes in the mountains surrounding the Norwegian fjords – good exercise and beautiful views. Our guest house was charming – was surprised by how nice it was – and the staff was super friendly. We even saw quite a few UNESCO world heritage sites. Overall I was positively surprised with Norway and glad i chose this trip. Great company too!
