Overview

Trek trails on the largest island in Greece, where the magical Mediterranean meets ancient empires

Twinkling Mediterranean waters, a rugged interior and millennia-old civilisations make Crete a must for any hike-loving adventurer. See it for yourself on this highlight-heavy walking getaway, which includes a never-forgotten journey down the dramatic chasm of Samaria Gorge and a stop at the peaceful sugarcube village of Loutro. We also dig deep into the local history and culture, admiring ancient ruins of long-gone empires, discovering ancient pottery traditions and sampling the popular local olive oil at a farm. The adventure begins in Chania, a historic port city with a 14th-century Venetian harbour and atmospheric old town. If there’s time, we can enjoy an orientation tour, visiting the old harbour to see the Venetian lighthouse; the renovated Grand Arsenal, an ancient shipyard in honey-coloured stone; the Splanzia ruins; and Kum Kapi beach.

Around 6pm, say yassou (hello) to your tour leader and fellow travellers, when we gather as a group to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead.

Your tour leader then ensures a big Greek welcome by arranging a group dinner.

We transfer (1hr 30min) to the coastal town of Paleochora, where we begin our first hike. Our adventure takes us east along a seaside route – part of the European E4 trail – to the village of Sougia, initially tracking a paved path before taking us to Anydri beach after a few minutes.

We ease into things with a gentle first half of the hike; after around 5mi (8km), we begin an ascent to the ancient city of Lissos, once a hydrotherapy hub that bloomed in the Hellenic, Roman and Byzantine eras. Here, we visit a well-preserved temple with a floor mosaic dedicated to Asclepius, the ancient Greek god of medicine, and take a small loop around the city.

We enjoy a refreshing dip in the sea and our boxed lunch, before catching a boat transfer to Sougia beach, where we have time for a quick break for coffee, juice or a beer at a beach-side canteen. We then transfer to our hotel for the night, where we have dinner and put our feet up.

Accommodation: Neos Omalos Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we tackle the UNESCO-listed Samaria Gorge, a 10mi (16km) long chasm running through the White Mountains to the Libyan Sea. We begin with a 10-minute transfer to the starting point, before setting out on what must be one of the most spectacular walks in Greece.

Along the way, we navigate pine, cypress and holly forests, pass 22 freshwater springs, and cut through abandoned villages and churches. The sheer gorge walls expand and contract as we go, stretching to 490ft (150m) at their widest but squeezing to just 10ft (3m) in the tightest sections.

Our downhill route crosses a river several times (over wooden bridges or rock hopping) but it is not a technical or difficult hike, plus we stop for a boxed lunch. Our goal is Agia Roumeli beach, where we stay the night – our luggage is transferred to the hotel for us. Upon arrival and after check-in, we have time to relax and enjoy a sea swim before a group dinner.

Accommodation: Calypso Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Post breakfast, we check out and begin today’s walk from Agia Roumeli beach, which takes us along the southern coastline. Our goal is the tiny seaside village of Loutro, an all-white bundle of buildings backed by rocky mountains and a contender for the most beautiful settlement in Crete.

Our route takes us along the coast, through the beach, past the 10th-century Byzantine chapel of Agios Pavlos and to Marmara beach. It’s then a 2mi (3.5km) hike to Loutro (with some steep climbing), though you can hop in a private boat taxi (additional cost) if you’d prefer. We also stop for a light lunch today.

Accommodation: Kyma (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We bid a fond farewell to Loutro this morning, hopping on an approximately 20-minute ferry to Chora Sfakion, where we jump into a transfer (1hr 30min) to our starting point for today’s hike: the 18th-century Preveli Bridge. From here, we walk through olive groves to the renovated ruins of Preveli Monastery, before following a trail towards Preveli Beach, enjoying views of the Megalopotamos river and the mighty cliffs of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge as we go.

After around 2.5mi (4km), we reach the palm-forested beach. The hike is a little hilly and includes 450 steps down to the shore, followed by a steep climb. We have time to recuperate after, perhaps with a swim in the Libyan Sea.

After, we head to a local olive oil farm for a tour and tasting experience, before transferring to Rethymno, where we spend the next two nights.

Accommodation: Menta City Boutique Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch

Our hike today is a culture-soaked adventure. It starts in the once-powerful ancient Greek city of Eleftherna, now a small village, where we admire the Byzantine tower at the city entrance, the Roman reservoirs and tunnels, the acropolis, and the Hellenic bridge, before visiting the Museum of Ancient Eleutherna .

Then, after a countryside walk, we visit the pottery village of Margarites, where we can visit ceramic workshops and learn about a pottery tradition stretching to the Minoan period. We also enjoy a traditional taverna lunch here.

Journey back to Rethymno in the afternoon, where we have free time to relax and explore.

Accommodation: Menta City Boutique Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

Enjoy a circular village walk this morning – our last hike in Crete! Transferring (30 minutes) to Stylos, we set off on our adventure, visiting the pretty villages of Paidochori, Neo Chorio, Diktamo and Machairon.

After lunch, which can be taken at a traditional taverna, we head to the lesser-known archaeological site of Aptera, which was once one of the most significant city-states in Crete. Its inhabitants were skilful archers and fought as mercenaries to bring wealth to their land.

Return to Chania in the early evening for our farewell dinner, an excellent chance to swap numbers and toast our adventure.

Essential Information

This trip is rated Activity Level 3 (Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings, visit the Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip, please contact us.

Suitability: The hikes require a good level of fitness – preparation beforehand is essential, though all hikes are optional. We mostly follow good trails, with some very rocky and slippery terrain in parts. The first three days of walking are particularly rocky; this, combined with the heat can make the tour more challenging. We encounter sustained steep ascents/descents (sometimes with gravel slopes) and you should be confident dealing with heights. There is usually between four and six hours of hiking per day. Activity hours are given as approximates only.

Weather: Temperatures can be high, please come prepared.

Key information

Recommended arrival time: You can arrive at any time today. There will be a welcome briefing around 6pm in the evening.
Airport: Chania Airport (CHQ)

Getting to the start hotel

The start hotel is approximately 30 minutes’ drive from the airport. Exodus provides one group arrival transfer from the airport, which is timed to coincide with the arrival of a chosen flight from London, UK. You may join this transfer at no extra cost, provided you can be at the airport before the transfer leaves. Speak to your sales representative for the group arrival transfer times or to arrange a private transfer.

If you would like further information on joining this trip, please speak to your sales representative.

Catching your return flight

There’s a group departure transfer to the airport for customers who Exodus booked onto a chosen flight to London, UK. Please speak to your sales representative if you wish to join. If the group departure transfer does not suit your flight time, speak to your sales representative to arrange an alternative transfer.

Greece

Travellers from the UK, US and EU normally do not need a visa to enter Greece. Please note, visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.

Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.

Breakfasts are buffets, typically with coffee, tea, orange juice, bread, butter, yoghurt, eggs, marmalade or honey, tomato/cucumber and cheese (with more options in the larger towns).

A dining experience in Greece isn’t the same without spending evenings in a taverna – a small, family-run Greek restaurant – and on this trip we visit many of them.

Dishes to try in the evenings include homemade filo pastry pies, moussaka, stuffed vegetables plus a variety of other vegetarian and vegan dishes, fresh salads, crunchy bread, cheeses and locally caught fish and seafood. Also try the local meat, such as lamb, pork, chicken and beef.

A Wonderful Experience

The trip was so much fun. Incredible hiking and scenery. A blend of the natural world and history. The accommodations were lovely and let you get a feel for the country, food and people. The trip was well-executed. The one thing I might point out was that the hiking on...

Most Inspirational Moment

Samaria Gorge. It is as awe-inspiring as everyone says. The village of Loutro. I wish I could have spent an extra day there, hanging out. The city of Rethymno. Great vibe. So many interesting streets, alleyways, shops and restaurants to explore.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide, Yorgos Prinarakis, could not have been better. He was attentive and informative, and could talk about the nature, culture and history of the places we visited with ease. Plus he was fun, and an all-around great guy.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you're in shape! It is challenging. And though you may be accustomed to walking around London or New York all day, it is not the same as walking up and down steep ravines, over loose surfaces, exposed to the sun.

Fantastic fit for us, no itinerary is for everyone

Bottom line: We loved the gorgeous hikes to remote parts of Crete that many travelers miss. Our two Greek guides helped us experience and learn about their beautiful and unique country. It was a special, unforgettable trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

The gorgeous long hikes along the coast to remove places like Loutro, Preveli Beach, and the marble beach. (Note that we were unable to hike the Somaria Gorge on day two, due to a tragic rock slide that killed one and trapped others, so I can’t speak to that hike. My understanding is that it is the most striking of the hikes, and one of the most physically challenging.)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Because our two guides were local, the information about Crete and Greece was unique and wonderful. Occassionally, language and culture impacted communications, as should be expected, but it wasn't a huge issue. We loved them both.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This was a great trip for me and my wife (age 63), but no trip is for everyone. To help others decide if this trip is right for them, I’m going to share some of the positive and negative feedback we heard from others in the group. Some days at the beginning of the week were more strenuous and long than some in our group wanted. Other days at the end of the week didn’t have as much hiking as some participants wanted. Also, be aware that two of the hotels in remote areas weren’t top-notch – no drinkable tap water, tiny showers, very basic breakfasts, and small rooms. For us, these two hotels were still lovely for a brief one-night stay. However, if high-quality hotels are important to you, this trip might not be for you. The other hotels during the rest of the week were much nicer, and the one in Rethymno where we stayed two nights was exceptional in all ways. For us, the week offered a good mix of things that we couldn’t or wouldn't have done without a local guide. We’re pretty fit, and were looking for a very active week, so the itinerary worked for us. But if you are not looking for long, strenuous, and hot hiking, this trip may not be for you. That’s not Exodus’s fault, it’s just that different trips fit different people. It should also be noted that this is the first summer Exodus has offered this trip, and they are seem to still be fine-tuning it. For instance, the wine tasting was dropped, apparently due to feedback. I’m confident the trip will get even better over time as Exodus adjusts based on customer suggestions.

Wonderful island

A great week with such a variety and great group. The first time this trip has run and some of the walks were a little challenging along the coast and two hotels disappointing. Chose to use BA flights and arrived day ahead which meant we had time to relax to...

Most Inspirational Moment

Definitely the gorge and completing it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very good x 2

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take walkingpoles, lots of water and avoid late night Easy-jet arrival and departure flights. Get there a day ahead and enjoy Chania its wonderful.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking through the Samaria Gorge, definitely. It really was stunning!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Enthusiastic and friendly, we visited his home town which he was very excited to show us and very passionate about, it was nice to see a snippet of his home life too!

Advice for Potential Travellers

It gets hot, with not a lot of shade on some walks, bring your hat and carry plenty of water - Oh, and also always have your swimmers handy in your bag just in case you get a chance to cool off!
