Discover Costa Rica - Special Birdwatching trip

Absolutely amazing trip of a lifetime! Antonio (our guide) was so knowledgeable on all the birds and wildlife we saw. He spent extra opportunities with us, getting up extra early in the mornings to watch the birds and never tired of us asking questions or identifying species. We were so lucky to have marvellous weather throughout the trip and each region had it’s own wonderful setting and range of birds and wildlife.
A truly spectacular trip – fabulous food and hotels. I didn’t want to do the long walks, so was able to spend time around the pools or lodges etc just focussing on the birds and wildlife.
Exceeded all my expectations. Glad I chose to travel through Madrid and not America as we had an early start the next day. Iberia not a great airline, but the US ones are just as bad.
Highly recommended! This was my first Exodus trip and classed as ‘leisurely’. Lots of walking for those who are keen, but as mentioned above, you could choose to not do long walks.
Lots of long journeys on very bumpy un-made roads, so not for the faint-hearted! But the reward is seeing so much of this diverse country and all the wildlife.

Most Inspirational Moment

Too many to decide! Tortuguera cruising along the canals, spotting so many things. Monteverde Cloud Forest Lodge - arriving in the afternoon sunshine and the agoutis and Coatamundies just foraging around you in the gardens, then going down to then birdwatching lounge with panoramic views - Mot-mots and humming birds galore! Esquinas Lodge - heavenly! Savegre - more humming birds and the Resplendent Questrel!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Antonio was superb - nothing was too much trouble and he dedicated himself totally to the group

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take notice of the trip notes- long and short trousers/ good walking shoes Be aware of long journeys on very bumpy roads - but with 'comfort'/coffee stops

The Lost City of Petra

This is an excellent trip, Petra is astounding, the Wadi Rum is achingly beautiful and peaceful and the array of life in the crystal clear waters of the Red Sea just amazing. The Dead Sea ranks amongst one of the weirdest experiences of my life!

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra has to be seen to be believed, I just wasn't prepared for the scale and the colours. For once in my life I made my boys, 15 & 17, climb to the top of something (a good hour’s very steep hike in the searing heat) without them being disappointed by the sight that awaited. George who had gone on ahead as usual, came running back to tell us, Wow! you're not going to believe it, it is so worth it! A monastery as big as a cathedral on the top of a Mountain surrounded by endless desert, there are no words, you have to go and see it!

Salah was a fantastic guide, a very proud Jordanian who not only looked after us in a practical way but gave us a fascinating insight into his country and people. Our driver Mamdoor also went out of his way to make sure we were always comfortable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We all made an effort to respect the fact that we were visiting a Muslim country during Ramadan by dressing conservatively and not making a show of eating and drinking during the day. I feel this was very much appreciated. The food was great everywhere and kept our hungry teenage boys very happy.

Taste of Cuba

I enjoyed the trip overall although food at times was not good

Most Inspirational Moment

The trip to Vianles and Trinidad along with Santa Clara were good

Thoughts on Group Leader

Overall Enio was good and he tried hard

Advice for Potential Travellers

I thought that at times the "chosen / recommended" restaurants were a bit iffy food wise so choose your own and you may enjoy more. Check out toilets, too many in restaurants just did not work!!!

Taste of Cuba

A well organised trip with a great guide which gave a good insight into life in Cuba

Most Inspirational Moment

I really enjoyed staying in the casa particulares with local families

Thoughts on Group Leader

We had a brilliant group leader

MT TOUBKAL WINTER CLIMB

Amazing trip in the snowy Atlas mountains and a good chance to see Marrakesh

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to the top of Toubkal and the views on a sunny, clear day were breathtaking

Thoughts on Group Leader

Good guides who spoke very good English and were always keen and happy to help.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The walk to both summits starts very early so make sure you take warm and windproof clothing. Walking up to 2 4000m peaks in 2 days is very difficult and you need to have a good level of fitness

Snowshoeing in Finland

Wonderful base in beautiful part of the world. Excellent facilities and equipment provided. Superb guides. Delicious locally sourced and home-cooked food.

Most Inspirational Moment

My wife nearly stepping on a huge male capercaillie sheltering in the deep snow - flew off with loud wing beats - not sure who was more startled!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent; wealth of knowledge, enthusiasm and gentle encouragement

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you like the big outdoors, want a change from the standard ski-type winter holiday, why not try this.

A great trip

This was a great trip overall. You get to see a lot of NZ and can do some great walks and other activities. The range of places visited on both islands means that some days there is a lot of traveling but the guides work really hard to break the day up with short walks and stops.

Most Inspirational Moment

Some of the more challenging walks rewarded you with great views and a real feeling of having achieved something. Jet boating and catamaran tip were both great experiences.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both guides were knowledgeable and prepared you well for the next days activities.

Johannesburg to Cape Town

This was a wonderful three week trip full of variety, travelling down through most of the eastern side of South Africa. Nearly 4500km over three weeks takes some doing so there are some long driving days. It covers beautiful scenery as well as the wild animals and varied plant life.

Most Inspirational Moment

The most inspiring was the Berghouse cottage in the Drakensburg, away in the hills, with its peace and tranquility. Other memorable things were the animals in Kruger and Swaziland, especially elephants coming right up to our vehicle on a game drive and the 8 rhinos in the early morning by the pool at the Ndlovi campsite in Swaziland; stroking a wild cheetah; going up Table Mountain on a clear day without a cloud in the sky.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Wynand was a fantastic leader - full of energy, always very helpful and considerate and lighthearted. He is an absolute encyclopaedia of information and there was very little he did not know about, of relevance to our trip. Together with our driver, Sofiso, they both worked tirelessly to make our trip comfortable and we were able to relax after a long day whilst they put up camp and cooked food. Sofiso was also a very good careful driver and at no time did we ever feel nervous, despite a few quite bumpy roads.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The trip notes were very accurate so they give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. Although the days were often long on the road they were broken up with fairly regular stops for loo/drinks/food, to see the view or watch animals/birds. I think having had experience with these kind of long distance driving holidays is a help. Very early morning starts have to be accommodated and it helps to have had some experience of camping.

The Perfect Family Holiday

Excellent Family Trip, it did exceed expectations: outstanding nature and exciting adventure alternate and often combine together to make this holiday unforgettable. Caymans, sloths, toucans, crocodiles, rainbow and mangrove boas, capuchin monkeys, owler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, green iguanas, hummingbirds, blue and white herons, white ibis, blue-jeans poison dart frogs, brown pelicans, tanagers of all descriptions, scarlet macaws, snake-birds, huge rhinoceros beetles, silky anteaters, orb-weaver spiders, palm pit vipers, river turtles, green kingfishers, ctenosaurs, cat-eyed snakes, coatis, kinkajous, bats, blue crabs, all sorts of butterflies, lizards, stick-insects and raccoons are some of the animals we have seen in their own environments, which range from adventurous jungles to idillic beaches. The Sarapiqui River Rafting has been unanimously agreed to be the best of the action activities, but the zip-lining in Monteverde was not that far away! It is a perfect holiday for a family with young teens between 12 ad 15 years old.

Most Inspirational Moment

The highlights of the tour are The Tortoguero Canals, the Hanging Bridges in Monteverde, the rafting in the Sarapiqui river and the optional Mangrove Boat Tour in Manuel Antonio, while the Hot Spring in a fine Hotel in La Fortuna, the Coffee Tour and Manuel Antonio’s beautiful tropical beaches add to the variety of this holiday.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader, Edward, was very friendly and professional, he flawlessly arranged all the extra activities. We all wisely followed his suggestions on the choice of restaurants, and I have to say that some of them were excellent. Also a mention for our driver, you could not get a better one than Campbell!

Advice for Potential Travellers

I was surprised how few mosquitos we encountered, I believe the fact we chose to go to Costa Rica at the beginning of the dry season, which starts at the end of December, was an advantageous factor. So if you worry about mosquitos, choose a tour during the dry season. Use DEET or Incognito Insect repellent, wear long sleeves and long trousers and you will be fine. The sun is much more powerful than in the Mediterranean, therefore caution and moderation are needed on the tropical beaches of Manuel Antonio, not just suncream!

Multi Sensory Experience

This trip was a delight to the senses – being on a bike totally immersed in the sights, sounds, smells … and of course tastes … of this beautiful and fascinating country. On the trip we experienced the rich culture and history, the varied vegetation and cultivation, the strikingly colourful birdlife, local food and tea stops, quiet back roads (and a few exciting ones!) and of course the friendly people.

Most Inspirational Moment

Climbing to the top of Sigiriya rock on Day 2 . Spotting the vivid blue of my first bee-eater. Watching rope being made from coconut husks in a cottage industry.

Thoughts on Group Leader

I can't speak highly enough of Suresh. He had a great relationship with the staff at all the places we visited and stayed at. He kept us informed all the way along the trip and provided us with a great variety of experiences. He coped with 'emergencies' and extra requests calmly and effectively - nothing was too much trouble for him. I felt really looked after by him and his team throughout the trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you are a bird watcher, get hold of a Bird Book of the area and take binoculars. At some of the remoter stops, there's also the chance for some great star gazing, provided you can drag yourself out of the bar in the evening, or out of bed early in the morning! - get Google Skymap app or equivalent on your Smart phone. I also wish I had read up about the particular form of Buddhism they practise here - a mixture of Buddhism and Hinduism.
