Amalfi Cycle Ride 10th-17th October 2015

Outstanding for both my wife and I. This is Italy’s equivalent to the French Riviere. A must for all to do. And by being on a bike you take in so much more of what is around you.

Most Inspirational Moment

Lunches at quiet out of the way restaurants which you would never go to as a tourist. Positano was simply stunning.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paolo was just perfect. Pleasant, cheerful, considerate, professional, calm. I could go on...

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you get use to going up hills on a bike. October is a great time to go because the weather is just right for cycling and the traffic relatively quiet. The bikes provided were excellent and with comfortable seats. However, professional cycle wear is well worth the investment. The age range of our group was from 28 to 70.

Suggestions

Exodus are efficient and clever at what they do. Anyone considering an adventure will be in safe hands with this company. Enjoy.

Cycle Cilento & Amalfi Coast

I had a such a great time. It was the first time I had been on holiday on my own and I’d been worried about having to meet perfect strangers and spend a week together but I met a group of really lovely people and felt I was amongst friends from the first evening. Paulo, our guide and Rafielle (apologies for the spelling) our mechanic were really helpful and went out of their way to ensure we were all well looked after and had a good time. I would definitely go on another trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were a few for me. The first was that I needn't have worried about having booked to go on the holiday on my own. I met such a lovely group of people and I had such a fantastic time. It was such an eye opener to me. I found myself thinking and saying out loud that I should have done it years ago! The trip was topped off by such a fabulous day of cycling along the Amalfi Coast, the memory of which will stay with me for a very long time.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paulo was wonderful. He gave explanations of where we were going and what to expect. He looked after us so well and went out of his way to ensure we had a great time and got as much enjoyment from the trip as possible. His enthusiasm was always 100%.

Advice for Potential Travellers

To have some cycling experience . Everything was taken care of with regard to travel arrangements, hotels, meals etc but only you can prepare yourself for the actual cycling and the inevitable hills on such a trip.

Cycle Cilento and Amalfi coast.

Great riding, starting on the quiet roads in the south and working up to the Amalfi coast ride. Hilly, but not hard hills. A very attentive and informative guide who gave us lots of cultural and historic information which made the trip more interesting.
Interesting side trips.

Most Inspirational Moment

The ride along the Amalfi coast was amazing and an absolute blast. The narrow road clings to the cliff side with lots of tight bends. It would be scary to drive but felt totally safe on a bike.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide was exceptional, very patient and safe. Our support driver was also very helpful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Include some hills in your pre-trip training.

Suggestions

The Exodus staff were very helpful when we were planning the trip.

Best experience for a solo traveller

This was my first experience of travelling solo and my first experience doing an organized cycle tour. So I had a few concerns about whether I would like the group, would the cycling be interesting and challenging enough, would I meet people that I could become long term friends with. Well I should not have worried. The group dynamics were fantastic with a range of ages and professions from all corners of the world and we all got on wonderfully. The cycling was beautiful – I had heard so much about the Amalfi coast so was very surprised that the Cilento coast was even better to cycle with a little less traffic and a lot less touristy. And it was certainly challenging – not ever so much that you think you can’t make it but even the fittest of us felt some of the long hills. And we did develop friendships that are enduring – even looking at more trips together.

Two thumbs up to Paolo the guide – absolutely brilliant. Accomplishes everything with a smile on his face. He really did an outstanding job keeping us all on track and making sure we were all looked after.

But the most pleasant surprise for me was how relaxed you become so quickly. Everything is taken care of for you so the 100 decisions you normally make on holiday such as “where shall we have lunch?” or “what time should we have breakfast or dinner?” are all taken care of for you. In fact by day 3 you didn’t have to care about where you slept that night or how far you were going to cycle – you just got on the bike and knew everything would be taken care of. A really relaxing experience!

Most Inspirational Moment

The highlight for me was probably Cilento - your ride through small coastal villages and the locals seem genuinely happy for you to be there. The few cars you encounter are incredibly considerate even on some pretty narrow roads so you never feel in danger.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paolo was absolutely fantastic. His leadership style certainly taught me a few things. Getting 16 people of all ages and backgrounds to do exactly what he wants when he wants and all enjoying the experience - absolutely no conflict what so ever. Incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic. A real asset to the company.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack light - you can wash your shirts and shorts along the way. Leave your laptop at home and relax.

I would do a trip like this again in a heartbeat and would highly recommend it to anyone with a spirit of adventure.

This sets the bar high...!

My first trip to Italy & my first group holiday; I’m very well travelled but had several reservations about an ‘organised group tour’ – all my concerns vanished quickly – this is a superb trip with a brilliant guide and I’d have NO reservations about recommending it. Just come prepared for some tough climbs!
Hard cycling, views I’ll never forget, delicious food particularly the first few days with lovely local suppliers sharing their produce, the insights into the life and culture of the region, stunning medieval villages, and most of all – great variety from the quiet pace of life, empty roads and warm welcome of the local people around gentle Cilento to the hectic & dramatic Amalfi coast – it just has it all!

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many...but the exhilerating coastal roads around Amalfi that wind like ribbons around impossibly high cliffs, sheer drops over perfect crystal water & picture perfect towns.....from lung-busting climbs to absurdly exciting decents, there were so many moments of jaw-dropping beauty & excitement around here, I hardly know where to start!

Thoughts on Group Leader

We all felt so lucky to have Paolo as our group leader; he shared so much knowledge, interest, a genuine passion for the local people, the hidden corners and the changing lifestyle of the region. He helped us feel confident and safe on the challenging roads around Amalfi, and to discover and enjoy the incredible and - to most of us - completely unknown region of Cilento. He was good fun, has a dry sense of humour, was always there for us and nothing seemed too much trouble. He helped me with my travel plans at the end of the trip, and shared great advice for my time in Naples. A total star!

Advice for Potential Travellers

This trip is down as moderate, but most of us agreed it was challenging at times. The distances were manageable but the inclines - wow! The first and last day were intense - it shouldn't put anyone off, but worth knowing and if you can, get lots of hill training - we did several days with over 4000ft of inclines each. It's absolutely worth it though...I've fallen in love with this entire region of Italy and for all the pain of getting to those incredible heights, the views are unfortgettable and will stay with me forever. Only other advice - take mossie spray, they are vicious, and bite day & night if you're not covered!

Suggestions

This trip has inspired me - spending time with a group of fantastic, like-minded people is a wonderful way to travel, and being with an experienced, kind and knowledgeable guide takes a lot of the strain away. The only way to find out if this kind of trip is for you is to dive in, and I'm SO glad i did!

Magical scenery, delicious food, tough hills in the heat

An amazing trip led by the kind, caring Paolo. I’d advise being prepared for tough hill climbs in the middle of the day in the heat. Well organised, accommodation comfortable, food and company wonderful.

Most Inspirational Moment

The surreal experience of riding along the winding coastal roads of the Amalfi, looking out at the sparkling blue sea and gorgeous vertical villages from well above.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paolo was very professional, caring and calm

Advice for Potential Travellers

As above, this trip is probably on the challenging side of moderate, especially from July-Sept climbing those hills on 30 plus degree days. Hydrate +++ and go at your own pace. Then again, I hadn't really done the training, that might be a good idea too.

Suggestions

Thanks Paolo and team, planning my next Exodus cycling adventure :-)

The food and the views make the tough bits worthwhile!

An amazing trip with some brilliant fellow travellers. Never would have made it up some of those hills without the support of Paulo and the rest of the team.
The cycling was tough at times but I think that was partly due to the heat. We had average temps between 30 and 35 degrees. There are some challenging climbs but what goes up must come down and everyone in the group made it through. I would recommend putting some time in on the bike before the holiday.

Paulo is a great leader with excellent knowledge about the area as well as knowing all the best places to eat!

On the final day we found a tour of the lemon groves in Amalfi which I would hugely recommend. It was advertised in the hotel and we had a great time learning about the history of lemon growing in the area as well as sampling some of the lovely food and drink they create! (www.amalfilemonexperience.it)

Accommodation was all nice and the dinners were great-you definitely won’t go hungry. Pools at all hotels except the last one but the beach was 2 minutes walk away. Take some insect repellant for the agriturismo.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing everyone reach the top of the climb out of Sorrento and the big one on the first day. The group were so supportive of each other.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paulo was fab and we were sorry to say goodbye! Trust him when it comes to food recommendations!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Padded shorts are a must as there's a fair few lumps and bumps in the road. Make the effort to put in a bit of training before you go as it'll let you make the most of the holiday and enjoy the stunning scenery even more.

Suggestions

Organisation of the free day didn't go quite as well as we'd hoped. We didn't end up getting to go to Pompeii and Vesuvius as there was some mix up with sorting it out and the price varies depending on how many people wanted to go so as it was just a few of us it was going to be quite expensive. The hike up to Ravello with Paulo that we did instead was nice though. Also would like to thank exodus for their help with our travel issues. Despite missing our flight due to traffic problems we got there and didn't miss any of the trip and weren't left out of pocket.

Cilento to Amalfi bike trip

Great trip!

Most Inspirational Moment

The scenery and the biking

Thoughts on Group Leader

Pablo was good leader and a good person.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Some hill training would be helpful.

Cycle Cliento and the Amalfi Coast

This was a stunning cycle ride. The scenery was fantastic, the people very friendly and the food was delicious. We had a really friendly and supportive group and Paulo, Sara and Giovanni provided excellent leadership and support throughout.
I think the rating as “moderate” was a little off the mark – unless you were fit and had some experience of challenging hills it may pose a tough challenge, particularly in the Italian heat.
The accommodation was good throughout (although the farm residence was disappointing at breakfast with limited choice). During our lunch stops the food and value for money were excellent.

Most Inspirational Moment

Strangely enough on one of our days "off" I made the trip to Capri and could look back on the coastline to see the amazing terrain (which we did successfully cycle!) - a real sense of achievement. The group was inspirational too with much humour and support when needed.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paulo did an excellent job , managing each day in a professional and supporting way. He made sure everybody was looked after and gave excellent advice for our times in built up areas. His announcement on the transfer from the airport (a long 3 hours!) was that we needed to forget two words this week - flat (Amalfi was not flat at all) and diet (there was no point in worrying about diets with such marvellous food) stay in my mind.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you are fit enough for the ride. Practice those hills before you arrive so you can manage the often steady climbs in the heat.

Suggestions

In terms of experience it was one of the best bike rides I've had with great leadership and support and a very nice group of fellow riders

Cycle cilento & the amalfi coast

Fantastic trip, hard work (do some hill training before going – it will make it all the more enjoyable) but the scenery and food make it so worthwhile. The guide, Paolo is fantastic, great local knowledge, especially when it comes to where to eat! We were told on the first day to forget the words “flat” and “diet”……..he was right!

Most Inspirational Moment

All of it was great, just beautiful scenery the whole way.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fantastic! Very considerate of everyone in the group, timed each day perfectly obviously loves this area and knows it extremely well

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do some hill training prior to going!

Suggestions

Brilliant trip, would highly recommend it but it's hard work
