Our Top 5 Places for Trekking in Northern Vietnam

"Discover a hiker’s dream − one shaped by traditional culture, stepped rice terraces and wonders of the natural world"

Across our Vietnam holidays, the north reveals itself as a hiker’s paradise and one of the great trekking regions in Asia.

Rice terraces cascade down mountainsides, jungle paths slip between limestone peaks and remote villages scatter across mist-shrouded valleys. Here, the roads fade away, and ancient footpaths take over.

Long before roads reached the region, many of these trails were used by ethnic minority communities trading between mountain villages . It’s part of what makes hiking in northern Vietnam feel less like sightseeing and more like stepping into the rhythm of local life.

Read on for five of the best trekking regions in northern Vietnam, each offering its own take on the country’s landscapes and trails.

1. Sapa district, Lào Cai province

Our Top 5 Places for Trekking in Northern Vietnam

If you’re picturing trekking in Vietnam, chances are you’re already imagining Sapa.

This is where the country’s landscapes feel at their most recognisable – folding rice terraces wrapping around the mountains, shifting colour with the seasons, and narrow trails linking one village to the next.

On our Hiking in Northern Vietnam adventure, you spend several days walking here, following paths that wind through working rice paddies and along valley sides. You pass farmers tending the fields, cross small streams, and move between Red Dao and Tay villages, with time to pause at viewpoints looking back across the terraces.

An overnight homestay in Nam Cang offers a chance to stay in a traditional wooden house, share a home-cooked meal, and experience the slower pace of life in the hills.

Sapa also features on Hidden Vietnam: Sapa & Beyond, where a full day’s trek explores the region, including Ta Phin village, home to the Red Dao community.

Along the way, you walk through quieter sections of countryside, following scenic routes through bamboo groves, expansive pine forests and folding rice terraces.

As you enter Ta Phin towards the end of the walk, you may see locals practising traditional textile techniques such as indigo dyeing and hand embroidery, skills that have been passed down through generations.

The day ends with an atmospheric homestay in the village itself, offering further insight into daily life beyond the trail.

2. Hoang Su Phi district, Ha Giang province

Panhou Retreat

Further north, the landscapes open up and the crowds fall away.

On Hiking in Northern Vietnam, this is the most sustained trekking section of the trip.

After arriving in Hoang Su Phi, a short uphill hike leads to Hoang Su Phi Bungalow, with views across the terraced hillsides that define the region. That evening, you’ll witness a traditional Red Dao fire dancing ceremony, where dancers move barefoot through glowing embers in a powerful ritual symbolising strength, protection and spiritual connection.

The following day, a longer round-trip hike takes you through rice terraces, tea hills and small villages, with lunch near Raspberry Hill viewpoint – one of the standout panoramas in the region. Routes combine steady climbs and longer descents, often with wide views across layered valleys and cultivated slopes.

On Day 9, there’s the chance to join a local farmer for tea picking and tasting before a final point-to-point hike to Panhou Retreat, set in a quiet valley surrounded by mountains.

3. Bac Ha district, Lào Cai province

Bac Ha region

Between Sapa and Hoang Su Phi, Bac Ha offers a more low-key style of trekking, where the trails feel less polished and the landscapes more rural and lived-in.

On our Hiking in Northern Vietnam trip, the focus shifts from Sapa’s larger mountain scenery to rolling hills, farmland and smaller village communities. Groups uncover the cultural side of the region, with visits to local families producing traditional corn wine and crafting palm-leaf hats by hand.

The following day brings a full-day hike from Na Hoi commune towards the Hoang Thu Pho viewpoint. Along the way, you pass through Ban Pho village, home to Black Hmong communities, following a mix of dirt trails and village roads through cultivated hillsides and terraced valleys.

As the trail climbs, the views gradually widen, with far fewer walkers around and a noticeably quieter feel than some of Vietnam’s better-known trekking regions.

4. Mai Chau Valley, Hoa Binh province

Our Top 5 Places for Trekking in Northern Vietnam

Mai Chau offers a softer introduction to trekking, both in terrain and pace.

On our Trails of Vietnam adventure, walking takes place across two days. After arriving, there’s a short walk through the surrounding villages and rice paddies, easing you into the landscape.

The following day is the main trekking day, with a guided walk lasting around four to five hours. You hike between hill villages, where stilt houses rise above the rice fields, where narrow paths take you through bamboo groves and working farmland.

Along the way, you may pass water buffalo grazing at the field edges, farmers planting or harvesting rice, and stilt houses where woven baskets and tools are set out to dry. This region has a more open feel than the steeper trekking areas further north.

A traditional stilt house homestay for the evening is a wonderful addition, where you share a locally prepared meal with your hosts before settling in for the night.

5. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Quảng Bình province

 Phong Nha caves

An exploration of Phong Nha introduces a dramatic change in landscape.

On Trails of Vietnam, time here centres around visiting Paradise Cave, with short, guided walking sections rather than a full trek.

Inside, the scale is immediate. Discovered in 2005 with the help of a local farmer, Paradise Cave stretches for over 18mi (30km), making it one of the longest dry caves in Asia. Wooden walkways guide you through the first section, where towering stalactites hang from the ceiling, and stalagmites rise from the ground, some joining to form cathedral-like columns, others shaped like curtains or frozen waterfalls illuminated to reveal their immense scale and detail.

It’s a shorter, more structured walk, but one that gives you access to a landscape you wouldn’t otherwise see – deep inside the limestone itself.
