SOUTH AFRICA: CYCLING THE CAPE & WINELANDS

Overall a fantastic trip well lead and supported,

Most Inspirational Moment

For me arriving in Hermanus and seeing the whales from the shoreline was the highlight

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent. Expertly organised a large group and provided just the right balance of information as we toured around

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take plenty of suncream and your own saddle

Suggestions

The mountain bikes were a little heavy and hybrid bikes without suspension would have been a more appropriate bike for this trip

SOUTH AFRICA: CYCLING THE CAPE & WINELANDS

Well organised, well executed tour with a great bunch of people in one of the most beautiful parts of the world in which to peddle.

Most Inspirational Moment

Making it across Chapmans Peak and then relishing the stunning views and swooping downhills on the other side.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tallis was first class and especially adept at managing the varying skill and fitness levels of the participants so that the strugglers like me were able to complete 99% of the distance, while the fitter folks had the opportunity to do their thing as a faster pace or over a longer distance. He and Sufiso made an excellent team: between them they cooked for us just brilliantly, ironed out any issues with accomodation and generally created a situation which could get on and enjoy the trip with them taking care of all the hassle.  Very grateful, guys!

Advice for Potential Travellers

My fitter friends may disagree, but to my mind this trip is at the more challenging end of Moderate.  Don't let that put you off, if like me you are knocking on a bit, but spend a few more hours working on your fitness level before you leave.  You will be amply rewarded for the extra effort....Bottom line: it's a great trip, just go for it!!

Suggestions

Exodus, you gotta do something about those bikes: i understand the finance folks want to sweat the assets, but the charge for hire is not trvial and the bikes are not up to the standard of the rest of the package.  I bought a Trek 4500 a few months ahead of the trip and it's a couple of hundred percent better than the alleged Trek 4500 you provided in South Africa. Again, i would not want to anybody off travelling with you on account of the bikes, but you owe it to your reputation and brand to provide equipment that matches up to the marketing.....

SOUTH AFRICA: CYCLING THE CAPE & WINELANDS

An excellent well planned and well run trip. Fantastic scenery, great places to stay and a great guide.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling mountain passes and Chapman's Peak. Whale watching. Cycling along the stunning coast back to Cape Town.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tallis was really excellent. Low key, flexible but very well organised. Supported everyone in the group. Also very knowledgeable about flora and fauna and had a great sense of humour. Our driver Sifiso was also excellent. Could not fault the team.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be aware the hire bikes are mountain bikes with road tyres, not ideal for this sort of road trip. Road bikes or hybrids would have been much better. Allow some extra days at start or end to explore Cape Town and climb Table Mountain.

SOUTH AFRICA: CYCLING THE CAPE & WINELANDS

Overall, a well organised trip with spectacular scenery and good winetasting. Accommodation was variable in style but most was very good, and the cottages at Franschoek were delightful. The guesthouse at Barrydale was also excellent. a good balance of cycling and sightseeing, although a little more time to sightsee would be good. There were also a fair number of transfers on the bus, but maybe this is unavoidable.

Most Inspirational Moment

Watching whales at Hermanus was hard to beat - they are HUGE and very close to the shore. Cycling Chapmans Peak Drive on the last day was a most beautiful cycle, not as tough as feared, and glorious scenery. Also the headwind had dropped a little!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tallis was very organised, and kept the different abilities of the group together with good humour. He was also sensible enough to cancel one afternoons cycle as it was dangerously windy. Sofiso drove the bus, cooked, loaded and unloaded all our stuff, and was always a most welcome sight at the breaks with water, fruit and jelly babies!

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would assess it as harder than "moderate". Everyone on our trip had hired Exodus bikes and they were heavy ATBs rather than hybrids which would have been more suitable. Most of the cycles were moderate in length but very hilly(which meant lovely views), and there was a horrible headwind almost every day which made the cycling much harder than it sounds on paper. But there is always the option of catching a ride on the bus. And the encouragement of the group generally kept everyone going!

Suggestions

The cycling is mainly on the hard shoulder of (often) busy roads, carrying a fair amount of heavy traffic. Combined with the strong and sometimes unpredictably gusty wind, this could be a bit hair-raising. Also remember that restaurants are happy for you to bring your own bottle of wine, charging a nominal corkage, so stock up at the excellent wine-tastings! I do feel that Exodus should supply hybrids or roadbikes as it is advertised as a "road cycling" trip. Otherwise, a great trip, go for it!

CYCLING THE CAPE & WINELANDS

A wonderful way to see Cape Town, the surrounding wine growing regions and the dramatic coast. But be warned, although it is classed as a "moderate" trip there are LOTS and LOTS of hills and it is VERY windy!

Most Inspirational Moment

Unexpectedly seeing a whale in Hermanus, the wild baboons just chilling by the side of the road, the huge open plains and seriously impressive mountains. Then wine wasn’t bad either!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Pete and his crew were great. Really friendly and happy to give some background on the places we saw. Cooking was excellent and just what I needed after a long day on the road.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don’t underestimate how tough the cycling can be as this is really an exhausting trip, not just because of the hills but also because of how difficult it can be cycling in such windy conditions. Take your own saddle, and padded cycling shorts as you’ll need them. Draught beer is cheap but pretty much everything else is the same price as in the UK.

Suggestions

Some of the places you’ll stay are in the middle of nowhere, so expect to make your own entertainment, which, to be fair wasn’t difficult with such a great group of people. I'm sure the samples we got from from the vineyards we visited helped too. Even in the height of summer it gets cold at night. So make sure you bring a fleece/warm jumper or 3!The days are long so don't expect much (if any) pool or beach time.South African electricity sockets are unlike any others in the world, so even if you think you have a "world adaptor" it won't work.

CYCLING THE CAPE & WINELANDS

REALLY GOOD HOLIDAY AND THE BEST GUIDES THAT I HAVE BIKED WITH.

Thoughts on Group Leader

GREAT

Advice for Potential Travellers

BE AWARE THAT IT IS A WINDY COUNTRY

CYCLING THE CAPE & WINELANDS

Cycling through great scenery with occasional wildlife and places of interest en route. A great advenure, made memorable by a good group.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling along the coast around False bay and then the route towards Cape Town.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rudi was good fun and has good energy. He  got 13 of us around the full itinerary without any real mishaps.  Lots of local knowledge, but could keep some of his briefings a bit briefer! Organised a good range of restaurants in the evenings. Andrew put in a solid performance as driver and assistant. Very knowledgeable and a great sense of humour!

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you're doing the shark cage diving, be careful what you have for breakfast!  Don't expect too much luxury accommodation.

Suggestions

This is my 7th cycling trip with Exodus and my favourite. Book it and enjoy yourself!

CYCLING THE CAPE & WINELANDS

The tour leader Rudi Swanepoel & driver Jabula worked very hard to ensure the holiday was a success. Rudi is still young but he dealt well with the group.
The tour had a great mix of cycling and sight seeing.

Most Inspirational Moment

The landscape is fantastic and the coastal rides were a real highlight. Trip to Robben Island. Whale watching in Hermanus. ( A must trip ).

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rudi came under pressure from the front riders to extend the rides and change the itinery, he coped well with this. Rudi & Jabula worked well as a team.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you want to do some sight seeing in Cape Town then either go prior to the trip or stay for a few days at the end, as there is not enough time without.

Suggestions

The accommodation varied in quality Swellendam & Simonstown were at the lower end.

CYCLING THE CAPE & WINELANDS

An excellent trip where the first half of it is very European (Dutch and Scottish Highlands) followed by areas with different wildlife. Coastal areas provided great viewing spots for whale watching and the views were great too! Needless to say the wine was very good so bring plenty of cash for this. Local food deffinitely worth trying!!

Most Inspirational Moment

Last day cycling up to and around Chapman's Peak especially as the rainy weather gave way to sunshine.

Thoughts on Group Leader

I can safely say that our leader was second to none compared with all other work/adventure travel I've done. Nothing was too much trouble, attended to all our needs and always provided alternatives if there was no immediate solution. His local knowledge and enthusiasm was excellent which made the trip that more enjoyable and fulfilling.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Come prepared for the weather!!! The weather can be very variable especially in the winter with strong winds and driving rain followed by glorious days of sunshine. Mornings can be very cold especially at the beginning of every ride. BRING A UK TO S.A. POWER ADAPTOR. VERY DIFFICULT TO BUY LOCALLY!!!!!!!

Suggestions

Mountain bikes supplied were ok but could do with being replaced soon. However, the leader and assistants were always at hand should there be any problems and were excellent. Seriously consider bringing your own mountain bike or hybrid if you can deal with the hassle and cost.Shark diving is brilliant and worthwhile doing but is around £130.

CYCLING THE CAPE & WINELANDS

This part of South Africa is definitely the right place to go on this type of tour. Relaxed and quality experience. Out of this world beautiful sceneries, stunning coastal routes… To my taste, the weather is just right for this physically quite demanding experience: not too hot and not humid.

Most Inspirational Moment

Breathtaking downhills.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Peter is a really fantastic, amazing and one of a kind tour leader! He is very professional and organizing, resourceful and very patient, attentive to every detail, goes extra mile to take care of you. Could not be better.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do not forget to take with you all the proper gear: gloves, gel saddle, cycle shorts etc are essential for long cycling days. Sport drinks contributed to my performance on last days :-).

Suggestions

Just go on this trip, this going to be an experience of your life time!
