Walking the Island of Madeira

This was my fourth Exodus trip and my first travelling solo. I had very good experiences during the first three trips and thought that I knew what to expect and would be safe travelling solo as a female. I walked Amalfi with Tony, Cinque Terre with Michaela and the Camino Trail with Miguel and they all were very organized and met with the group to have a introductory and informative meeting before we started our walk and would often have dinner with the group each night. This did not happen in Madeira. Our meeting was supposed to happen on Saturday, April 13th, the day before our walk began, but Bruno our leader could not get the group all together. He blamed it on miscommunication from some woman at the agency. Our first meeting happened the morning of our first walk. Our group didn’t start having dinner together until the fourth day of our trip. Bruno didn’t have any meals with the group and travelled from his own home to meet up with us for our walks. He said that Exodus would not cover the cost of a room for him. As a solo traveller, I was getting bored of eating dinner alone and I took this trip because I thought all of the trips ran in a similar way. Bruno didn’t know my name, he called me lady when addressing me on one of our walks later in the week. Thursday was his day off and the group was leaving Port Muniz by taxi and travelling to Funchal. There were two confused taxi drivers who picked us up we were not all staying in the same hotel. The group was split in half, some were staying at a hotel mentioned in the trip notes, while the others were staying at another hotel that was not in the trip notes. All of the highlighted names on the list were staying in the same hotel, my name was highlighted, but when we arrived – there was no reservation for me! I was lucky to be travelling with the one person (Trevor) who took a photo of the list and had the other hotel name. They lovely receptionist at the Terrace Mar sorted it all out and I had a place to stay. Bruno was aware of the mix up at the hotel but never addressed it with me. I was very lucky to be travelling with such a good group of people.
We were on our own to purchase lunches but the grocery stores do not have pre made sandwiches or salads. You buy bread, meat and etc. to make your own. One of the hotels did not have a mini bar but offered to store your lunch in a fridge.
The pace of the walk was a little slow for me but the scenery and the weather was beautiful. After a long day in the sun when you want to grab a cold drink, hop in the pool, Bruno would end the day with a long meeting.

Most Inspirational Moment

The weather and scenery was very nice. The last day, walking Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo was the highlight for me.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Bruno needs some training or lessons in hospitality.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Madeira has gorgeous scenery and the weather was beautiful. If you are travelling solo and don't mind uncertainty this may work for you.

Excellent mix of culture and walking

This week had it all treading a good balance between some culture and the lovely walking in the hills of northern cyprus. Our guide, Gizer, made the trip very relaxing giving us just the right amount of information at the right time so we were always aware of what to expect the next day. It was also very interesting to hear about the situation between northern cyprus and cyprus. I would definitely recommend this trip. The three meals that Gizer organised for the group were delicious.

Most Inspirational Moment

The views from the castles having climbed many steps to get to the top.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent

Advice for Potential Travellers

Good walking boots as the paths are quite rocky

A great overview of Japan

This is a really good tour. Starting in Kyoto where you visit a number of temples, then moving through the countryside to various locations, then to Hiroshima and finally to Tokyo for the modern part of the tour. By the end you get a really good sense of what Japan is. The group leader, Gary was excellent! With a few small tweaks with regards to some of the accommodation I’d have given 5 stars.

Most Inspirational Moment

The food and friendly Japanese people!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Gary was the highlight of the tour. He was very knowledgeable and very efficient at organising groups.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You might have to sit on the floor to eat at one of the hotels. It's a great experience but you will struggle if you have stiff legs or knee's. Bring comfy walking shoes as you can be doing 20000 steps a day.

Suggestions

The only small negative I have is that exodus could have pre-warned people about the possibility of sitting at tables at floor level (a lot of the group were not flexible enough). I also think the final hotel in Tokyo was fairly low standard and as we paid well for the tour could have been a lot better.

accurate

One of the best trips I have been on. We were blessed with good weather and the walking conditions were great. April is definitely the best time of year and the flowers were in full bloom. Fransisco was an excellent guide, friendly, thoughtful, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to be with. His local knowledge was invaluable and it was a pleasure to see the local crafts and artisanal trades. An extra bonus, not on the agenda was to his home town, Silves, on day 1. We walked to the old fort via the local market where we bought figs and almonds from his farm with Grandma doing the marketing. He gave good advice on local restaurants with possibly the best sea-food place in the region.
I would strongly recommend this trip with Fransisco

Most Inspirational Moment

Awe inspiring Atlantic beaches from the cliff hillside, and tranquil woodside meadows

Thoughts on Group Leader

the best!!! Really excellent in all respects

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you enjoy moderate walks with a bit of local culture , than this is for you.

Suggestions

I was glad I took walking poles, for limestone climbs and stream crossings

Wonderful trip to South Korea

Trip of a lifetime to a fascinating country. We were toured thoughtfully through large cities, historic sites and gorgeous natural locations throughout Korea.

Most Inspirational Moment

Listening to the Buddhist monks drumming at the Temple Stay.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Michelle Kim is one of the best leaders I have ever had the pleasure of touring with over many tours I have joined. She was so good at bringing the group together, sharing her knowledge of Korea whether it was history, locations or food. Michelle went out of her way to ensure we had great experiences throughout the tour including arranging meals for us to attend taking into account everyone's input. Just an outstanding individual to lead a tour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for some rain, cool nights and managing stairs that may or may not have railings.

Suggestions

I think it would be helpful for us to have the contact information of our tour leader e.g. to contact via Whatsapp when we land if needed. My joining up with the group was clunky as I got different instructions from my local Canadian group then what had actually been arranged.

An very well organised tour which included so much in a week

Thanks to our very well organised leader Laura, we managed a complete tour of the island in a week. Greek, Roman and Norman sites told the rich history of Sicily. The trip to Mont Etna and the walk in the national park covered the beauty of the island. Our group was made up of lovely people which added to the fun

Most Inspirational Moment

The Greek and Roman temples and the magnificent cathedral in Montreale with Fabio our great guide were the highlights for me but Palermo was very interesting also

Thoughts on Group Leader

Laura was new to Exodus but certainly deserves her place in the team. She was well organised, knowledgeable, adaptable to weather conditions and above all so friendly and fun. Must mention Mario and Luigi our bus drivers, so friendly and helpful, specially Mario who covered most of the trip

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you go in April take layers and waterproof jacket as the weather is changeable. Good trainers for Mont Etna are also recommended

Suggestions

Be prepared for long days and a few hours on the bus everyday

Great week hiking and tasting prosecco!

Rolling green hills covered in prosecco vines and wildflowers.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Vania was wonderful, best Exodus leader yet! Friendly, fun and patient. She took great care of our group and provided all details with a daily briefing.

The holiday I didn't know I needed

A lovely itinerary, brilliant leader, really nice group, trip well paced and everything was so thoughtfully organised.

Most Inspirational Moment

There wasn't just one - the whole thing was great, riding without my sunglasses so I could enjoy the colour of the hills and think how lucky I am that I can do trips like this.

Thoughts on Group Leader

- Paolo is an excellent leader - He was calm and clear throughout - Our safety was paramount in his mind and he was always looking out for us - The organisation was excellent, always lovely lunches and dinners - a lot of that seemed down to the relationships Paolo in his network - Not only was he accomplished in the area of cycling, he is also clearly passionate about the history of the region and its impact on society - He also had great support staff such as Emilio and Raphaello

Advice for Potential Travellers

Some people ponder over the 3 / moderate rating - I think it's accurate as we took plenty of (needed) breaks to recharge. However there are plenty of hills and so inevitably there will be challenging moments. It was a really friendly group - ranging in age from 49 to 82 - and a mix of standard and e-bikes, so there was something for everyone.

Suggestions

The route was beautiful and we enjoyed fantastic food. By the time we finished the trip there was no one under 50 left. :) That might have involved a big birthday!

Great trip

A really interesting trip with enjoyable walks, good company and a great leader.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were great views from the castles at the top of the mountains. A good reward for climbing steps.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Gizer was a great leader, organising interesting optional trips on the free day and final day. He also arranged 3 evening meals for those interested at varied, excellent restaurants. He also gave good restaurant recommendations. He is very knowledgeable about the area.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take walking poles for some of the downhill sections. You do need a decent level of fitness.

Suggestions

The hotel and rooms were good. We only ate breakfast in the hotel and that was fine with plenty of choice.

North Cyprus Trip

A Brilliant time with some great walking and a lot of History in this trip

Most Inspirational Moment

Castles high up on mountain's. The History and the separation of Cyprus experience

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was great helpful with a lot of Historical knowledge

Advice for Potential Travellers

I did this trip in April 2024 you are still out of season in Cyprus it was still very hot and a shock when I came back to the UK

Suggestions

This is a good Historical trip
