Most Inspirational Moment

Sierra Maestra

Thoughts on Group Leader

Competent and patient

Advice for Potential Travellers

It is full on. Travelling can be exhausting but well worth it.

It works

A well balanced choice of 3 exceptional places.
Day 2 was probably the best walk along the Itria Valley.
Not using the Matera suspension bridge limited the walk route. For interest we did cross it on our own.

Most Inspirational Moment

Waking up to look out over Matera from The Sassi Hotel. The view across to the sea from the beautifully adapted Masseria Morrone. Ancient Olive trees as living history.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Knowledgeable in his own field. More information would have been helpfully shared with clearer language.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack all the usual requirements for day walks at home.

Suggestions

I actually found it very pleasant that this was a small group of 4. We made a cohesive team. This holiday began with a pretty high basic cost, so the necessity to purchase so many meals out, although a good way to relate to the place, was a significant extra cost.

Great holiday in beautiful surroundings with excellent leaders

Five days of short walks in fascinating and varied countryside, brought to life by our great leaders Lina and Carla, with instructive wine tastings, followed by a day and a half in vibrant Porto.

Most Inspirational Moment

Too difficult to select from so many great experiences, but the wild flowers and lack of crowds in the Basto region, and three memorable lunches including Carla's home-made picnic, will stay in our memories for a long time.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lina was very well-informed and made every effort to ensure we enjoyed our first three days despite some personal difficulties. Nothing was too much trouble for Carla and her knowledge of and love for her home district of Basto were an inspiration.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Late April is a great time to do this trip as the wild flowers are stunning at this time of year, but the walks are very definitely "leisurely". Note that it is, in fact, very easy to get to the start hotel in Regua by direct train from Porto.

Suggestions

There is scope for doing significantly longer, but not too demanding, walks both in the Douro and particularly in the quiet and spectacularly beautiful Basto region. Exodus might consider alternating trips with the current itinerary with trips with longer walks, rated as Leisurely/Moderate, in this fascinating and largely unspoilt region. We plan to return, either with Exodus or independently.

Excellent trip

The trip was a mix of moderate walking through green vineyards and lush countryside, along with cultural city tours.

Most Inspirational Moment

I loved Assisi.

Nico

Advice for Potential Travellers

The hotel is centre-based and is lovely, with a spa and swimming pools, outside bar and incredible views.

Suggestions

I highly recommend this trip.

Felt like a dream

Several days of leisurely walks through the hills of this unique wine growing region.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the Pre Alps and the Dolomites for the first time.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Vania was a wonderful guide. Such knowledge of the area thanks to being born and living there.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Unwind and enjoy the slow pace of the hills life.

Awesome cycling adventure from Saigon to Hanoi

A wonderful adventure cycling through mad traffic, long coastal roads, rice fields, quaint villages, hill climbs and descents. Ever changing scenery – an experience to remember forever.

Most Inspirational Moment

Entering the 100 Club (100kms in one day).

Thoughts on Group Leader

Hoang Trong Tung - fabulous leader.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Moderate fitness required. There is a 10km hill climb halfway through which tests stamina. The option of an e-bike to book for this tour.

Suggestions

This tour was professionally organised and supported by a knowledgeable and wonderful team of local drivers and mechanics. Our tour leader spoke great English and shared with us Vietnam’s history along the way. Would thoroughly recommend this tour for anyone who has a cycling passion.

Great adventure

We had a wonderful time exploring the Amalfi coast. The food was outstanding! The cooking demos are fun! The staff at the hotel are very sweet and accommodating.

Most Inspirational Moment

Views from Ravello!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was awesome! We had a few weather related changes to our itinerary. He made sure that we did everything by changing things/plans expertly! He made us feel welcome and comfortable. Loved Severrio’s sense of humor!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Lots of food! Plan for several large courses! Impossible to eat it all. But difficult to stop because it so very good.

Walking the Island of Madeira

This was my fourth Exodus trip and my first travelling solo. I had very good experiences during the first three trips and thought that I knew what to expect and would be safe travelling solo as a female. I walked Amalfi with Tony, Cinque Terre with Michaela and the Camino Trail with Miguel and they all were very organized and met with the group to have a introductory and informative meeting before we started our walk and would often have dinner with the group each night. This did not happen in Madeira. Our meeting was supposed to happen on Saturday, April 13th, the day before our walk began, but Bruno our leader could not get the group all together. He blamed it on miscommunication from some woman at the agency. Our first meeting happened the morning of our first walk. Our group didn’t start having dinner together until the fourth day of our trip. Bruno didn’t have any meals with the group and travelled from his own home to meet up with us for our walks. He said that Exodus would not cover the cost of a room for him. As a solo traveller, I was getting bored of eating dinner alone and I took this trip because I thought all of the trips ran in a similar way. Bruno didn’t know my name, he called me lady when addressing me on one of our walks later in the week. Thursday was his day off and the group was leaving Port Muniz by taxi and travelling to Funchal. There were two confused taxi drivers who picked us up we were not all staying in the same hotel. The group was split in half, some were staying at a hotel mentioned in the trip notes, while the others were staying at another hotel that was not in the trip notes. All of the highlighted names on the list were staying in the same hotel, my name was highlighted, but when we arrived – there was no reservation for me! I was lucky to be travelling with the one person (Trevor) who took a photo of the list and had the other hotel name. They lovely receptionist at the Terrace Mar sorted it all out and I had a place to stay. Bruno was aware of the mix up at the hotel but never addressed it with me. I was very lucky to be travelling with such a good group of people.
We were on our own to purchase lunches but the grocery stores do not have pre made sandwiches or salads. You buy bread, meat and etc. to make your own. One of the hotels did not have a mini bar but offered to store your lunch in a fridge.
The pace of the walk was a little slow for me but the scenery and the weather was beautiful. After a long day in the sun when you want to grab a cold drink, hop in the pool, Bruno would end the day with a long meeting.

Most Inspirational Moment

The weather and scenery was very nice. The last day, walking Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo was the highlight for me.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Bruno needs some training or lessons in hospitality.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Madeira has gorgeous scenery and the weather was beautiful. If you are travelling solo and don't mind uncertainty this may work for you.

Excellent mix of culture and walking

This week had it all treading a good balance between some culture and the lovely walking in the hills of northern cyprus. Our guide, Gizer, made the trip very relaxing giving us just the right amount of information at the right time so we were always aware of what to expect the next day. It was also very interesting to hear about the situation between northern cyprus and cyprus. I would definitely recommend this trip. The three meals that Gizer organised for the group were delicious.

Most Inspirational Moment

The views from the castles having climbed many steps to get to the top.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent

Advice for Potential Travellers

Good walking boots as the paths are quite rocky

A great overview of Japan

This is a really good tour. Starting in Kyoto where you visit a number of temples, then moving through the countryside to various locations, then to Hiroshima and finally to Tokyo for the modern part of the tour. By the end you get a really good sense of what Japan is. The group leader, Gary was excellent! With a few small tweaks with regards to some of the accommodation I’d have given 5 stars.

Most Inspirational Moment

The food and friendly Japanese people!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Gary was the highlight of the tour. He was very knowledgeable and very efficient at organising groups.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You might have to sit on the floor to eat at one of the hotels. It's a great experience but you will struggle if you have stiff legs or knee's. Bring comfy walking shoes as you can be doing 20000 steps a day.

Suggestions

The only small negative I have is that exodus could have pre-warned people about the possibility of sitting at tables at floor level (a lot of the group were not flexible enough). I also think the final hotel in Tokyo was fairly low standard and as we paid well for the tour could have been a lot better.
