A WEEK IN JORDAN

It was the most fabulous holiday I have ever had. We had a whistle stop tour of Jordan, our guide was wonderful his knowledge was endless. Each day (which began early) was an adventure packed with fun and excitement.  Each night we fell into bed exhausted. Great group, lots of fun, lots of laughter.

Most Inspirational Moment

All of the trip was fantastic. Everything was planned for us. Petra took my breath away, the Treasury by candle light will remain in my memory forever. Loved the desert trip to Wadi Rum, the  desert walk at day break, the camping, and our camp hosts were ace, it was a fabulous experience even in the rain.

Thoughts on Group Leader

In a word FANTASTIC ! He kept us all on task, rounding us up, no way would we have seen half of what we saw without him. He also took us to lovely local places to eat.  His pride and love of Jordan was obvious.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take enough warm clothes, February was colder and wetter than we expected.

Suggestions

I thought everything about the trip was fantastic- I enjoyed it so much I have just booked an Exodus holiday to India, if it is half as good as my trip to Jordan I will be happy.

CYCLE THE BACKROADS OF SRI LANKA

A great and very wet holiday with some truly memorable moments. Sri Lanka has many cultural and natural attractions which are well worth seeing – visiting them on a bike just added to it.  Would recommend this trip without hesitation.

Most Inspirational Moment

Not sure about inspirational but there were memories that will stay with us:The never ending and wettest climb to the tea plantations at 6,000 feet with the most wonderful hotel at the end where we were greeted by friendly staff with cups of hot soup! The tea houses that we stopped off at each day - and their loos!Flooded paddy fields that we were ferried across on a make-shift raft by  locals on our final dayThe rain, the rain and the rainLovely routes through rural lanes and the warm welcome we recieved from locals everywhere

Thoughts on Group Leader

We chose the trip because we had been on Peter's Kerala trip previously. We knew he would do a really good job and we were not disappointed. He prepared us for what to expect each day and at each hotel and used his excellent local knowledge to help us get the most out of our trip. He had warned us about the final beach hotel but it was truly awful and we could not stay there - he did his very best in helping us find an alternative hotel and never made us "Escapees" feel we were being difficult  or awkward.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't bother with waterproofs and if possible ride in all terrain sandals which dry much quicker than shoes. If you hit the kind of monsoon rain we did for most of the holiday waterproofs are useless and skin is pretty waterproof. The rain did not spoil our holiday and bizarrely contributed to some of the highlights for me. Take old cycle tops or t-shorts that can be dumped afterwards - if it is wet and muddy no end of washing  removes the marks.Remember the weather is something none of us can control - grin and bear it!We used ATM's to get cash - had no problems in finding them in any towns.Sri Lanka is a beautiful country and cycling is a wonderful way to get under the skin of it  - go for it!

Suggestions

As  mentioned above, we were booked into a truly awful hotel when we reached the beach - hugely disappointing as we were there for 2 nights and it was meant to be an  opportunity to relax and enjoy the beach.  Most of the group had to move to other rooms and  7 of us moved out altogether. All credit must go to Exodus, for their approach to our complaint - their quick response and willingness to make amends will certainly give us confidence to book again with them in future.I do hope they have now found the alternative in the Galle area they were looking for, as this could have spoiled what had otherwise been a great holiday.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: DOBBIACO

Have been to 8 cross-coutnry skiing centres and Dobbiacco is the best. It has stunning scenery, a vareity fo ski-ing routes, a htoel wiht swimming pool and sauna which offers copious ammounts of food: the best  of Austrian and Italian cuisine. have gone 3 times- what more can I say!

CYCLING CUBA

Was very impressed with the degree of organizational skill that was displayed throughout the entire holiday. Nothing was left to chance , for the most part, our needs were met very adequately.

Most Inspirational Moment

Truly enjoyed cycling throughout the countryside, no better way to experience the country than being on the ground, observing the locals in their day to day activities. As for your question as to the inspirational part, it was all inspirational from the first day to last day, so many beautiful sights words or pictures do not justify the total experience, but memories do.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was fantastic, always there for us, very patient, informative, and even on off days was willing to take us to a special restaurant or someone"s home to enjoy a meal. Our group leader and other support staff were very professional at all times making sure our needs were met to near perfection.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Before leaving on my holiday when reviewing the Exodus lounge site the question of money seemed to be a big issue and rightly so. When you arrive at the Airport in Havana there is money exchange facility on the premise , also in all the major centres. with all the concerns about the money issue I had before leaving it was no issue at all.If your someone who likes a wash cloth when you shower as I do bring your own , hotels do not provide , they look at you funny if you ask for one.

Suggestions

Have an open mind, go with the flow and leave your inhibitions behind.

KENYA & TANZANIA ADVENTURE

This was a birthay present to myself, that surpassed my expectations!!!

Most Inspirational Moment

I was truely over awed when i came up close with 2 big elephants drinking water round the back of the camp site we were staying at! I think it must be the most surreal experience of my life. Mind you, seeing the beautiful Indian Ocean from our balcony room in Zanzibar was also magnificent.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Oh my Godaness!! Linda was fantastic, totally my kind of woman, she really helped to make the trip the sensational experience that it was.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I was a complete novice to this holiday, and so read all the reviews before I went, which were all helpful. However I would add, that i wish I had taken a pair of binoculars with me, I am looking to buy a pair before my next trip, and I will certainly be booking more trips in the future :-)

Suggestions

I would say to anyone thinking about booking this trip just go 4 it! Dont worry if you are traveling alone, or never done anything like this before, it was truely fantastic, and I will never forget it.

EVEREST BASE CAMP

WOW!  AWESOME!  At 64 years young, I was very apprehensive about reaching Base Camp, as were a few others in the group. Yet everything went really smooth. The trek was out of this world as was the organisation by Exodus and especially the Sherpas who got me there.

Most Inspirational Moment

So many, but the fact that all 16 of our group made Base Camp was special. Many, many other great moments, with the best for me being :-1.  Reaching Namche, realising I was in the heart of Sherpaland after a long day mainly trekking uphill.2.  Standing outside our teahouse at Tengboche on a beautiful, clear, sunny day with Nupste, Everest, Lhotse and Amu Dablam in the background.3.  My favourite - an 'optional' walk after trekking to Lobuche, which took us to a ridge from the teahouse to watch the sunset on the Nupste Wall. No colour at first, then the sun began to set, turning the Wall to yellow, then gold and eventually red.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sherpa Pasang was brill. He even organised taxis for us in Kathmandu to go sightseeing ! Nothing was too much trouble for him on the trek. Everything was explained to us the night before trekking. He made sure the pace was correct ( hence everyone made it to Base Camp ). Everything was sorted for us at the teahouses, packs ready in our rooms on arrival at the end of the day and collected early next morning. We even had a flask of tea at Base Camp. Of course, all of this was with the great help given by his team.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you have a good level of fitness. You will stop for a breather on the treks uphill, everyone did. Therefore stick to the pace your Sherpa tells you to do. You can do it - there were four over 60 year olds in our group and we all made it.We had mainly beautiful, sunny days ( late November ), but it was cold at the trek start in the morning and freezing in the evening, so plenty of thin thermal layers ( I slept in mine plus leggings and walking socks ), a good down jacket and sleeping bag.Age is no barrier, you won't be walking fast. The food is excellent in the teahouses with a tremendous variety. Just keep loading up on the carbos. If you fancy the trek, don't think twice - JUST DO IT - if you don't, you'll always wonder - what if ?

Suggestions

My only disappointment is that I don't think this trek can be surpassed, therefore where do I go next ! You do not have to be superfit, but climb those mountains beforehand, it will help. The most common word used by the 'kids' and by the 'golden oldies' on trek was - awesome, as we saw sights which now unfortunately put our mountains to shame.Take wetwipes ( for various uses ), lipsalve, a hot shower every few days is a luxury - expect a cold outdoor shower !I wish I was back there now.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - LEMOSHO ROUTE

Definitely the hardest thing I’ve done in my life but certainly not the least enjoyable! Had a good time climbing on the Lemosho route and would definitely recommend it if you’ve got the time. Great guides as well- read a review before climbing saying to trust the guides as they know far more than you do- definitely true!

HIGHLIGHTS OF MOROCCO

Excellent itinerary which meant you could see a huge portion of the country in a short space of time. A couple of long days on the minibus….but i enjoyed watching the changing scenery!! Due to time constraints it did sometimes feel a bit hurried but again we did get to see the country’s many highlights!!

Most Inspirational Moment

New Years Eve in the Saraha Desert was an excellent way to welcome in the New Year, one i won't forget for a long time.  Watching the sunset from the top of the Sand dunes, then star gazing round the camp fire.  Atlas mountains ~ really enjoyed walking through the Berber village and then relaxing on the Gite's balcony reading my book.Essaouira a wonderful seaside town, easy place to shop and lovely fish restaurants!!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mustapha was excellent!  Very knowledgeable and gave plenty of recommendations and advice.  Great sense of humour!Ali the bus driver didn't speak much but was an excellent driver!!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Best to layer your clothes, in December it did get quite chilly at nights in the desert, gorge and the mountains.Toilet roll and anti-bacterial gel a must in your day bag!!! Advisable to have coins ready for the toilets. When haggling start your price below 1/2 of the price the seller is starting with, that way you can ensure you won't be overpaying and get a fairer price.  Souvenirs at the desert are very overpriced but as long as your happy with the price your paying its's all good!!

Suggestions

Met a great bunch of fellow travellers which made the trip even more memorable!!!

SIERRA DE AITANA TREK

A great week in a beautiful area with fantastic food, characterful accommodation and a great guide.

Most Inspirational Moment

This was a good hard week of walking, but the sense of achievement in getting to the tops of the peaks was great and the views were stunning. The area is really unspoilt which was refreshing. All three accommodations were welcoming, comfortable and served excellent food and wine and allowed us to get a taste of the real Spain.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jose was knowledgeable, friendly, good company and enthusiastic about his local area. Very good!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bear in mind that although the weather is mostly good (and was great for us for 4 out of 5 days walking) you may encounter adverse weather conditions in winter and need to be prepared for this. On the last day though we were in T-shirts on top of the highest peak in the area and that was early February!

Suggestions

This is an excellent week of immersion in Spanish culture, great walking and a bit of winter sunshine.

DISCOVER SRI LANKA

Yet another great holiday organised by Exodus.  It covered everything, despite the rain!

Most Inspirational Moment

Having lunch with Tsunami victims - this was the best rice and curry conjured up in such a little space - it was like feeding the 5000, even though there were only 20 of us.  So much to choose from  Exodus have worked tirelessly to support these people and it is amazing how much can be achieved with so little. As well as this, the variety of the excursions was well received.  The group was great, as were the elephants, the wildlife - not to mention all the different types of birds - I've never seen so many kingfishers in my life, the locals and the changes in scenery.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Roshan was great.  He showed us his country, a few dance steps and how to play cricket.  He introduced us to the Sri Lankan way of life including the local tipple - arrack - which readily flowed in the evenings.  A perfect tour leader who joined in the fun.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go and enjoy yourself, but don't bank on the weather behaving itself.  We went in what was supposed to be the "dry" season, but it wasn't, so an umbrella will be a must!  Keep the salt sachets from the aircraft as this will come in handy to add to some water in a bottle for the jungle walk - a great remedy for leeches.  Opportunities are few and far between for shopping, so enjoy the sapphires, spices and oils.  Galle was great and cheap for shopping for scarves/clothes.  If you are thinking of climbing Adam's Peak to see the sunrise, make sure you consider this carefully as you will need to be fit and able to cope with lack of sleep and of course if the weather is bad you won't see the sun rise!  Climbing the Lion Rock gave a great view of the area.

Suggestions

Can't wait for the next trip!
