Springtime with Severio

The variety of experiences, from steep climbs down steps hewn into the hillsides to walking the rim of Vesuvius or marvelling at the mosaics of Herculaneum, made this a memorable trip.
Our group, christened ‘the joyful’ by our leader, contained an assortment of Britons (including Scots), a couple from Sydney and another pair from California. We all enjoyed each other’s company, avoiding the clique-forming which can occur within a group, and all choosing to eat out in a restaurant together on our day off.
The hotel staff at Due Torri were attentive, friendly and helpful and the food was excellent.

Most Inspirational Moment

The thunderstorm and drenching rain which struck while we were walking the Way of the Gods was pretty awesome, as was making it to the scheduled lunch stop later that day! I loved the visits to Pompeii and Herculaneum: so extraordinary to see every day items, along with beautiful art that has survived for two thousand years.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Severio is an exceptional leader, knowing exactly how to get the best out of every team member and appraising both individuals and situations with skill and patience. His enthusiasm never appears to wane, however many times he must have gone over the same ground. I must also praise his kindness: having returned home and realising I had mislaid one of my purchases, I contacted Seve to see if he could help. He went back to Amalfi, sought out a replacement item, then posted it to me in the UK, entirely at his own expense of time and money. That must be way beyond anything that the job description requires!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do go prepared for all kinds of weather conditions on the Amalfi coast. Warm weather clothing may be needed, even in Spring and Summer.

Walking Amalfi coast

I think people should be warned more about how strenuous the walks are if people are not fit…
the trip is rated as moderate fitness, but moderate to a young fit person is not the same as someone older or not as fit.
All participants should be advised that they MUST where appropriate walking boots to improve grip on unpredictable ground.

Most Inspirational Moment

Team work, helping each other, looking out for each other.... being considerate of others around us and being so grateful for this opportunity in life to visit such a beautiful part of the world.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader was very relaxed and laid back. Good help and advice when we needed him. Very sociable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Wear good walking shoes. Get fit before you go, do the exercises Exodus send in the itinery.

Tailormade a week in Jordan

A week in Jordan
fly into Amman and transferred to a hotel for the night then travel along the kings highway towards Petra via Mt Nebo , Madaba and Kerak.
Two full days to explore the sights of Petra
visit little Petra
quick visit to Aquaba (for supplies )
Wadi Rum desert, four wheel drive and two nights in Bedouin camp along with one day hiking through the desert.
visit and swim in the dead sea staying at a 4 star (5 star I think ) hotel

Most Inspirational Moment

I cant single one inspirational moment as they all were but if I really had to then it would be the sunset in the desert Wadi Rum

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ibrahim was fantastic from the moment he picked us up at the airport till the moment he dropped us off there he looked after us really well. Anything we wanted he was there for us. he gave us all the information and more that we needed to complete our trip. He made sure every guide we had was the best and helped us understand the countries customs and language. I would absolutely recommend him to any of my friends that are planning to visit Jordan

Advice for Potential Travellers

Yes please do not think of Jordan as a country in the middle east or in an area of trouble as it is so much more than that. It has a very western European outlook and the people are so friendly and they actually believe they are half English and have Jordanian. Our trip has open all of our eyes to a completely different view of the middle east. go and see for yourselves I promise you , you will be blown away with how friendly and open this country really is.

AXW 130419

An excellent trip. Well organised and operated.

Most Inspirational Moment

Looking down on Petra and realising the extent of the site and the awesome achievements of the inhabitants over the ages.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jihad Abu-Zahra was amazing - knowledgeable, entertaining, helpful, patient - everything you would want in a guide. In addition he helped me when I had a medical problem - sorting out medical help, to which he accompanied me, translating and explaining as necessary - a real support. Nothing was too much trouble for him - he is to be highly commended. Thank you Jihad for a wonderful trip.

Lovely experience of rural Spain

We had a thoroughly enjoyable week on this holiday. The walking is not too strenuous but is varied and picturesque. Our guide, Michael, made this holiday for us. He was so knowledgable and interesting but friendly and cheerful also. He knew so much about the local area & its plants and wildlife. The accommodation is comfortable with plentiful tasty food (although coffee in a local bar in Algámitas was better than at the cortijo! ) We were able to see all the sights of the beautiful city of Seville which was an added bonus. Felt quite privileged to spend some time in an unspoilt area of Spain with a friendly bunch of people.

Most Inspirational Moment

We enjoyed the walk along the Caminito del Rey. Stunning views and never really experienced anything like it before ( over such a prolonged distance) Also we were lucky to see the Easter celebrations in progress whilst we visited the first town for our tapas lunch which incidentally was delicious.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent. Very knowledgable but able to share this in an interesting way. He worked hard to keep the group together on our walks.

Walking in Tuscany.

Great week despite the weather! Sarah was an excellent guide. She knew the area extremely well and was able to make adaptations to the walks depending on the weather and confidence of the group.
The farmhouse was comfortable with great food. The make you own packed lunches also worked well.
Would definitely recommend this trip, but if I was going again, I would probably go a bit later in the year when the weather is more likely to be settled.
A trip to Lucca on the free day would be my suggestion. A lovely little town, compact with plenty to see.

Most Inspirational Moment

I enjoyed being guided by Sarah, over the rocky scrambling part of the walk to the rock arch. I would have been nervous, but Sarah was great at confidence building and got us all through it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sarah was the best group leader I have met. She was very quickly aware of everyone’s abilities and managed us very well. She was very knowledgeable about everything and I felt very safe with her. I would chose any trip I knew she was going to be leading in the future!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Some of the walking is quite steep, but manageable if you are reasonably fit. I would go in June or September rather than April when we had very mixed weather.

Hawaiian paradise

A well organised trip visiting 3 Islanda. Very educational. Our leader Tom had excellent knowledge. Volcanoes, snorkelling, great accommodation. Could have done with more free time and beach work however.

Most Inspirational Moment

Dolphins joining us for a swim at the snorkelling coral reef

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tim was amazing. Faultless. He was professional, knowledgable, amenable and kind. We rated him highly

Advice for Potential Travellers

Have a few days afterwards if you want the beach scene

An extraordinary trip to Everest Base Camp

This is a fantastic trek to Everest Base Camp, made even more extraordinary by the two nights spent in EBC, taking in the unique atmosphere as climbing season gets underway. Valerie and the rest of the Exodus team were fantastic, and looked after us so well, ensuring an unforgettable adventure.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many amazing moments. The first view of Everest and the other Himalayan giants at sunrise was certainly very special. Our acclimatisation walks where we reached altitudes of 5100m and 5545m left me with a real sense of achievement, and confidence ahead of going to stay in Base Camp. It was also very interesting to meet some of the different mountaineering groups along the way who were aiming for the summit of Everest.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Valerie's knowledge and experience of the Himalayas is second to none, and it was fantastic to hear of her adventures and to learn about trekking and mountaineering in the area from her. Her leadership ensured that everybody achieved our objective of safely reaching EBC and back. I would definitely travel on one of her trips again in the future.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you want to trek to Everest Base Camp, do this trip, it is so special to spend time in the camp itself, while it is a privilege to travel with such a knowledgeable and enthusiastic team. Bring an open mind, drink lots of water on trek and embrace the adventure.

Hiking in the Himilayas

Such a varied and personally challenging tour! At 73, I wondered how well I would deal with the serious elevation hike up to the Ridge. The guide, Rajeev, made hard choices when the weather was difficult. The 3 guides supported us every day so we all did our best. The view at sunrise of the mountain from the Ridge made the effort worth it. The other stops in Darjeeling and Sikkim and Kolcutta gave us a good idea of this part of the country. A well planned and varied experience.

Most Inspirational Moment

Viewing the Himalayas from the Singalila Ridge.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Although younger than the hikers, he acted with knowledge, consideration and organisation. He took all into consideration to guide us quietly. He did not sidestep making hard decisions.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Read the trip notes. Pack for all weather possibilities. We had hail in April.

Beautiful trip

I really enjoyed this trip. Wira (our guide) and the support team worked very hard and ensured it all went smoothly. I had little knowledge about Indonesia and I feel that this trip has opened a new world to me. I learned a lot about the culture, history and customs of this beautiful country and Wira contributed a lot to this. Bali is covered with temples and statues and for me it felt like an open museum. Another interesting point that caught my eyes were the architecture of the mosques in East Java. It has influences of temples and shows that the two cultures have been integrated which was very interesting to see.
Everywhere we went people were very friendly and smiling and greeting us.
There were some tough rides, a few nasty uphills, some very steep and rough downhills and off roads which made this trip even more interesting. Wira explained the detail of the route and what to look out for which was very helpful.
The hiking up the Ijen volcano and watching how the sulphur miners work was the highlight of the trip for me. The other activities such as hot spring, snorkelling and swimming (pool and the sea) were all very enjoyable. Most hotels had a swimming pool so swimming after a hard cycling day under a hot humid condition felt like heaven! 🙂

Most Inspirational Moment

Climbing the Ijen volcano. The landscape was beautiful and the view of the lake from the top was simply stunning. Seeing the sulphur mine workers carrying such heavy loads on their shoulders up that steep route was simply an eye opener. Riding on the old lava field (very rough off-road) was quite amazing too.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Wira was an excellent leader. He was always calm, friendly and carried a beautiful smile. He was very knowledgeable and explained to us about people/farmer's lifestyle and customs. Every day he explained to us how the route would be in terms of points of interests as well as the challenging parts. The support teams also contributed to the success of the trip. They were very helpful and every little detail was taken care of, eg every time we had a break, they would fill up our water bottles without us even noticing it which was a nice touch.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you do your homework ie training! :) There are some tough uphills as well as very steep downhills with sharp corners and also some quite rough off-roads.
