Overview

Discover Malaysia’s diverse highlights, from orangutans and rainforest trails to holy sites and exquisite street food

Malaysia is a country of two halves. To the east is the island of Borneo with orangutans, jungles and rivers. To the west is the Malaysian Peninsula with a blend of cultures, religion, colonial history and modern flair. Discover the highlights of both, with a chance to spot orangutans and pygmy elephants in Borneo, before diving into culture in Kuala Lumpur, Malacca and Georgetown. We finish on the tropical beaches of Langkawi island – a scenic finale to this adventure of contrasts.

Our adventure begins in Sepilok, a renowned rainforest sanctuary where you can observe rescued orangutans up close in their natural jungle habitat.

Around 6pm, say selamat petang to your tour leader and fellow travellers, when we gather as a group for the first time to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead. There is usually time for an optional night walk this evening before dinner (occasionally this will happen tomorrow).

Your tour leader ensures a big Malaysian welcome over a group dinner.

Accommodation: Borneo Sepilok Rainforest Resort (or similar)

  • Meals included:Dinner

Created in 1964, the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary is the largest orangutan sanctuary in the world and aims to rehabilitate and release orphaned and captured orangutans into the wild.

This morning, we visit the informative headquarters and see the animals at feeding time, before a visit to the Sun Bear Conservation Centre.

After, we return to the hotel, where you have a chance to relax by the pool for the afternoon. Alternatively, there is the option to return to the orangutan sanctuary for the second feeding session (return transfer costs not included). Speak to your tour leader for more information on this option.

This evening, we visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre, which has an impressive canopy walkway offering great views over the Sepilok Reserve. This is a great place to see birds, including hornbills and Borneo bristleheads, and we may spot the odd orangutan during fruiting season.

Accommodation: Borneo Sepilok Rainforest Resort (or similar)

After breakfast, we depart Sepilok and transfer (approximately two to three hours) to the third-longest river in Borneo, Kinabatangan. The wildlife reserve here is home to an astonishing array of wildlife including pygmy elephants, wild orangutans, gibbons, proboscis monkeys and rare birdlife. As dusk approaches, we take to the river in search of some of the local animals.

Accommodation: Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Borneo & the Malaysian Peninsula

Up early, we head out on a dawn wildlife cruise on the river in search of more wildlife. After breakfast, we either embark on a walk on the surrounding nature trails or visit a nearby village to learn about the indigenous Orang Sungai community.

Return to the river this afternoon to look for crocodiles and other forest residents. There should be the opportunity this evening for an optional night walk where we may see owls or even Western tarsiers.

Accommodation: Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Leaving after breakfast, we head to Sandakan (approximately 2hr 30min drive) stopping at the Sandakan War Memorial en route.

After checking in at our hotel, the rest of the day is free for you to relax, swim in the hotel pool, enjoy local cuisine or explore the vibrant, compact streets of Sandakan.

Accommodation: Sabah Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

After breakfast, we transfer to Sandakan Airport and bid farewell to Borneo to check in for our flight to Kuala Lumpur on the Malaysian Peninsula (there is a 44lb/20kg restriction but it is possible to pay for excess luggage at the airport or your leader can arrange this at the start of the tour).

Upon arrival in Kuala Lumpur, we meet our leader for this section of the trip. We then take a two-hour transfer to Malacca. Upon arrival at our hotel in the afternoon, there is time to relax and explore this historic and culturally rich city.

Accommodation: Hotel Puri Melaka (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

Malacca is a well-preserved colonial town with a mix of Portuguese, British and Dutch architecture. The quaint Chinatown neighbourhood is home to numerous antique shops plus a Hindu temple, Taoist temple and a mosque, while the oldest functioning church in Malaysia is nearby across the canal. We explore the city by foot and by using its colourful and distinctive trishaws.

This evening, we go out to try Malacca cuisine. Known as Baba Nyonya, it is a blend of Chinese, Malay and other influences and is a speciality of the town.

Leaving the sleepy charm of Malacca, we first transfer (approximately three hours) to the Batu Caves. These limestone caves are a holy Hindu site and are guarded by a giant statue of the Hindu god Lord Murugan. Behind the statue are the 272 steps that lead to the caves and large numbers of monkeys.

We then take a short transfer to Kuala Lumpur, the bustling capital of Malaysia. Known as KL, this vibrant city shows a completely different side of the country.

The remainder of the afternoon is free to explore the city further, visit the Petronas Towers or enjoy a spot of shopping. Please note, the Petronas Towers are closed on Mondays (Day 9 of the itinerary) and advanced booking online is recommended at least a week before arrival to avoid disappointment. Please see the optional excursions section of the Trip Notes for further details.

If you want a drink with amazing views later this evening, head to one of the many rooftop bars in KL and enjoy the cityscape at night.

Accommodation: Santa Grand Signature Kuala Lumpur (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

Uncover remnants of Kuala Lumpur’s early history woven into its city streets. From the colonial-era buildings around Merdeka Square to the Moorish-influenced Masjid Jamek, this heritage walk also showcases other notable landmarks.

The rest of the day is free to explore more of the city at your own pace. You can shop in the malls, visit one of the museums or take in the views from the KL Tower (some sites and museums are closed on Mondays, such as the Petronas Towers and Bridge, please see details under optional excursions in the Trip Notes).

  • Meals included:Breakfast

Today, we transfer north (4hr 15min) to the island of Penang and the town of Georgetown, a World Heritage site due to its architectural and cultural landscape.

Upon arrival, we have a late afternoon orientation tour.

Accommodation: Cititel Penang (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

Discover more Malaysian diversity on a combined heritage and food walking tour in Penang, taking advantage of Penang’s reputation as a food hub. Georgetown is known for its cultural sights and natural scenery. Explore on foot to see well-preserved colonial structures, ornate temples and colourful street art. We end our walk with a visit to Khoo Clan House and Museum and enjoy lunch.

This afternoon, there is free time to explore further on your own. Perhaps scale Penang Hill or visit the Botanical Gardens. Alternatively, stroll to the Eastern & Oriental Hotel, which has been restored to its past grandeur: the perfect place to enjoy a cup of tea or gin and tonic.

Accommodation

Hotels, lodges and resorts

The accommodation on this trip provides an adventurous variety of places to stay. The normal accommodations used on this trip are on the day-to-day itinerary; however, below are a couple of the notable places we stay.

Upgrade to a pool terrace room on Day 12 and 13 of the itinerary – speak to your sales representative for more details.

Sepilok: Borneo Sepilok Rainforest Resort (nights 1-2)

Borneo & the Malaysian Peninsula

We stay two nights at a resort in the tranquil Sepilok Rainforest; perfect for nature lovers and just a short drive from the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary. The rooms are relatively modest, but include air conditioning, mosquito nets and private bathrooms. The resort also has a restaurant serving a variety of local, Asian and Western dishes in addition to an outdoor swimming pool.

Kuala Lumpur: Santa Grand Signature Kuala Lumpur (nights 8-9)

Borneo & the Malaysian Peninsula

Spend two nights in the heart of Kuala Lumpur at the Santa Grand Signature. Within walking distance of the Petronas Towers, this modern property has a rooftop swimming pool and fitness centre. There’s also an all-day restaurant serving Peranakan and international cuisine plus a sky lounge for cocktails with stretching city views.

Worth knowing

  • The accommodations listed in the itinerary are the standard hotels used. However, there may be some departures where groups stay at similar hotels of the same standard and quality.
  • While the resorts we stay at in Borneo (Sepilok and Kinabatangan) are modest, they have been selected due to their proximity to wildlife activities included on the trip in conjunction with reduced accommodation options in the area.

Trip Expert

Borneo & the Malaysian Peninsula
Nostalia Jaidul
Expert Leader: Borneo
Introducing Nostalia Hailing from Sabah, north Borneo, Nostalia has been expertly guiding tours since 2012.

This trip is rated as Activity Level 1 (Easy). For more information on our trip gradings please visit the Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us.

Weather and seasons: Malaysia has a tropical climate, which means it can be quite hot and humid year-round. Due to the wide range of geographical zones visited there is no best time to visit; different parts of the country will be going through dry or wet seasons at different times of the year. Even if a region is in the wet season, it normally gets a mixture of rain and sun.

Walks: We go on several leisurely walks in Borneo, including along canopy walkways in Sepilok and to a viewpoint in Kinabatangan. While these are not challenging, the trails can be muddy.

Travel: We travel by minibus, motorised canoe, train and two internal flights. Most drives are relatively short, with the longest being around five to six hours, but most are under three hours. The train ride from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth is four hours.

Key information

Start hotel: Borneo Sepilok Rainforest Resort, 1.5KM, Jalan Sepilok, Sepilok, 90000 Sandakan, Sabah
Phone: +60 16-841 1414
Recommended arrival time: You can arrive at any time today. There will be a welcome briefing around 6pm in the evening.
Airport: Sandakan Airport (SDK)

Getting to the start hotel

The start hotel is approximately 20 minutes’ drive from the airport. Exodus provides one group arrival transfer from the airport, which is timed to coincide with the arrival of a chosen flight from London, UK. You may join this transfer at no extra cost, provided you can be at the airport before the transfer leaves. Speak to your sales representative for the group arrival transfer times or to arrange a private transfer.

If you would like further information on joining this trip, please speak to your sales representative.

Catching your return flight

There’s a group departure transfer to the airport for customers who Exodus booked onto a chosen flight to London, UK. Please speak to your sales representative if you wish to join. If the group departure transfer does not suit your flight time, speak to your sales representative to arrange an alternative transfer.

Malaysia

Travellers from the UK, US and EU normally do not need a visa to enter Malaysia. Please note, visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.

Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.

Important information

All foreign visitors must now complete and submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) within three days (including date of submission) prior to their arrival in Malaysia.

To complete the MDAC form, you need to add your date of arrival/departure in Malaysia, passport details, and accommodation (the start hotel of your tour). To obtain these details, please refer to the Final Joining Instructions, which are sent one to two weeks before your departure.

Once the MDAC form is submitted, you will receive an email with a PIN to check your registration on the MDAC website where you can download a PDF copy of your authorised MDAC. It is advised to also print a copy of your MDAC for immigration. All visitors must then present their printed, completed form and their passport at immigration upon arrival in Malaysia.

Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Malaysia.

You should allow about 880-1,320 Malaysian ringgits (US$200-US$300) for food not included. You need a little more for beer and other alcoholic drinks as you can expect to pay near Western prices.

Most meals will be basic, based around rice and noodles, although most accommodations have a Western breakfast of beans, toast and eggs. In the bigger hotels and cities, the full range of Western and local foods are available. You can generally avoid the spicier food if you wish.

In Kuala Lumpur, there is a food tour providing an opportunity to experience the diverse culinary heritage of the country.

Vegetarians can be catered for but please be aware that choice may be limited outside the main cities. Please inform your sales representative before departure of any special dietary requests.

In Borneo, the availability of certain products is minimal or non-existent, for example wheat- or dairy-free, please be prepared for this and you may need to bring these from home.

Malaysia generally has a tropical climate, which is fairly standard year-round. Different parts of the country experience wet and dry seasons at different times of the year and you can expect to have sunshine and rain at any time. In the lowlands, temperatures tend to vary from lows of 20C (68F) to highs of 30C (86F), while the highlands generally have lows of 15C (59F) with highs of 25C (77F). Temperatures can get very cold on top of Mount Kinabalu where it can even freeze at night.

As a certified B Corp, we’re on a mission to improve our social and environmental impact across all our adventures.

We do this through our innovative Thriving Nature, Thriving People plan.

This ‘nature positive’ approach is designed to help nature and communities thrive in harmony through practical solutions, such as reducing carbon and waste on our trips, supporting conservation projects through the Exodus Adventure Travels Foundation, and rewilding 100 square metres for every Exodus traveller.

You’ll also find Thriving Nature, Thriving People moments across our trips. These experiences are often a highlight of your adventure, while also benefiting the natural world or local communities.

On this trip, we:

  • Visit Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary to learn how injured, orphaned, and rescued orangutans are rehabilitated and cared for.
  • Optionally visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn about research, rehabilitation, and welfare efforts protecting the Malayan sun bear.

The tour started in the rainforest in Borneo where we saw orangutans, monkeys, crocodiles and various birds. The river cruises on the impressive Kinabutangun river were awesome! The second part on the peninsula was wonderful for culture, beaches, wildlife and food!!!

Most Inspirational Moment

I especially enjoyed the mangrove boat excursion as we saw so much wildlife and stopped to swim on a beautiful quiet beach.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both Rony and Jason were excellent tour guides who are passionate about their job and proud of their country.

Best way to see Malaysia combining Nature and Culutre

Malaysia is such a rich country with so much to offer from nature to history. The main reason I loved this trip was because it felt like it gave me a full experience of this beautiful country. From seeing Proboscis Monkeys in the wild to the beautiful sites like Georgetown,...

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to pinpoint just one to be honest. The river cruise on the Kinabatangan River was such a great experience. Seeing the wildlife was amazing. The other thing I enjoyed was exploring Georgetown with our group. All the buildings and the history was so interesting. There are just so many to highlight.

Thoughts on Group Leader

I loved our Guide(s). I think it was great we had 1 guide in Borneo (Nelson) and 1 guide in the Malaysian Peninsula (Jason). Both are exceptional guides and very experienced. Not only is their knowledge of history and nature amazing, but their passion for what they do is clear. They really went the extra mile to take care of everyone in our group. Even though they have done these trips for years, I can't thank them enough for that spark and passion for what they do.

Advice for Potential Travellers

For those that don't know, Malaysia is very hot and humid. Now the good thing is you have air conditioning in your hotels; however, since it's so hot outside, one of the things I highly encourage all people to bring are electrolytes. It helped me and other travelers on my trip. Also think about a small compact umbrella. Not just for the rain, but also for the sun as it's fairly strong in the afternoon. Speaking of Rain, bring something to keep you dry because when it rains in Malaysia, it RAINS.

A wonderfully varied, fully immersive experience of Malaysia!

An incredible two weeks on Borneo and the Malaysian peninsula. The first part of the trip involves several days of wildlife cruises, whilst staying deep in the jungle, to search for orangutans, elephants, crocodiles and various exotic birds. We were fortunate enough to spot lots of interesting animals under the...

Thoughts on Group Leader

Borneo itself was an extraordinary destination, it was Jeffry’s exceptional guidance and leadership that truly brought the trip to life. His deep expertise, passion for the region, and dedication to the group made him an invaluable part of the experience. Jeffry was not just a guide, but a true ambassador for Borneo, and his presence was a highlight that will be remembered long after the trip ended.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Despite the packed itinerary, there are several free afternoons and it's worth researching things you might want to do before you travel. Some activities such as the Petronas Towers need to be booked in advance due to limited availability.

Is this trip suitable for Vegans?

This was an excellent trip with plenty of variety due to having a week of nature, the culture of the Malaysian Peninsula and the idyllic relaxing Island of Langkawi. Melaka was excellent. I loved all the buzz. The Batu temple was amazing. Then there was the tranquillity of the Sandakan...

Most Inspirational Moment

The River cruises and seeing Proboscis Monkeys. It was pouring with rain and I was sat in a puddle but seeing many different troops high in the trees on the jungle edge was amazing. Plus many hornbills and birds of prey, pygmy elephants and a crocodile. The whole trip was fantastic.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Awang was our guide in Borneo & he was always available to assist. When we couldn't do the jungle hike as there was a male elephant in the area he organised a walk to the village. He was knowledgeable & well organised. He also kept us entertained on the coach journeys with some funny stories. Chee was our guide on the peninsular and he had his work cut out with looking after a group of 16. As there was free time in each city, he gave suggestions and helped us get to our chosen excursions. He also suggested restaurants that would be suitable for vegans, plus where we could buy a Guinness! He helped to find a bar to watch the England game during the Euros, which were on late. On the visit to the Petronus Towers due to the logistics those not going up just waited in a Sky bar or did some shopping, so that was a shame.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take long sleeved cotton shirts & trousers, the sun is hot & the mosquitoes seem to bite even when you haven't seen any and you have put on anti mosquito cream. You only need walking shoes or trainers plus some sandals. Everywhere is casual. Take a mix of cash & card as some small shops only took cash. Beer and soft drinks are cheap on the peninsula whereas drinks on Borneo were like UK prices. The cocktails are good & reasonable. There is an app called "Grab" which is easy to install on your phone and is which is great for taxis & and they are very cheap. I found it was easy to be vegan here. I took a small carton of oat milk for the first day to have in tea/coffee and was able to pick up cartons of soya milk along the way at Mini marts/service stations. Although they were very sweet. There was also small chocolate oat drinks. No hotels offered non dairy milk. Breakfasts were mainly toast with beans & potatoes, or peanut butter. There was always a fruit selection (melon). In Borneo where food was provided there was a buffet & all vegetarians/vegans were given an extra plate with Tofu/tempeh, plus veg curry. When eating out there were vegan/vegetarian restaurants in KL & Georgetown. Otherwise there were usually a couple of options on the menu. There was always fried veg rice or spaghetti. You need to specify no cheese, even if not listed as an ingredient. The included meals on the peninsula were good with a lot of variety. The final meal on Langkawi was delicious. There was generally a lack of cake/desert, but you can buy biscuits & chocolate. I always take some vegan bars. I enjoyed the food here. On the street food tour in K.L. the things we tried were vegan (all deserts).

Perfect blend of wildlife and culture

An amazing two weeks - first half spotting wildlife in the Borneo rainforest then a week on the mainland visiting colonial towns and modern cities. A perfect blend of two holidays merged into one. A full on itinerary but never felt too rushed, the hotels were mainly very good, the...

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the endangered Pygmy elephants on the river cruise, flying squirrels and spotting two wild orangutans. Appreciate that we were very lucky as the wildlife doesn't appear on demand. Melaka was great fun, bonkers and very lively night life, a real culture shock after our time in lodges in the Borneo rainforest.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both group leaders were excellent. Edwin in Borneo (being a former forest ranger) had fantastic wildlife knowledge and along with our river boat driver was amazing at spotting so much wildlife for us to see. Edwin had a great sense of humour and took the group to a lovely restaurant on our last night in Borneo. Jason on the mainland was a kind and truly passionate guide and went out of his way to ensure that everyone in the group was looked after. His job was much harder as there was so much else to see so the group did split up more in the bigger towns, but he managed to keep everyone happy seemingly popping up out of nowhere to ensure everyone was having a good time and were safe. He always made restaurant suggestions for dinner and helped with menu translations. Mostly the group kept together and followed his recommendations. All of us heading off in a big taxi van for a fish and chip supper on a remote beach in Langkawi was a great shout Jason! When not with the group (hardly ever) he was always availble on What's App chat anytime should he be needed.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a poncho and small umbrella. The Poncho for the occasional huge downpours and the umbrella useful for light rain and can also be used as sun shade, it can get very hot walking around the towns. No need for hiking boots - some waterproof walking shoes/trainers will be fine. Plenty of sunscreen and insect repellent. But don't hesitate just book it.... just relax and go with the flow. I'm looking forward to the next adventure with Exodus now.

Disappointing trip

Beautiful and interesting time in Borneo and masses to see in Malaya, but spoilt by a poor guide and less than satisfactory travel arrangements . Lovely group of people.

Seeing the orangutans in Borneo and the river cruises

Thoughts on Group Leader

My experience of the guide in Malaysia has been the worst I have experienced and will make me seriously question the use of Exodus for future trips. Andy was obsequious and undoubtedly the worst guide I have encountered. It started a racist joke at the airport and continued with the arrival at out hotel in Malacca where he said we were with Intrepid and went downhill from there. At the KL hotel he said the same and we questioned this and he said that Exodus and Intrepid were the same company. News to us…..but perhaps he is right, however, we booked under the Exodus name. He failed to give adequate explanation about what we were doing each day, he never learnt our names and his guiding was frankly useless. When asked a question, he would often make up the answer. We asked for a recommendation on the second night in Malacca for somewhere to eat and he suggested a supermarket! The dinner restaurant in Malacca was below the standard expected for an Exodus holiday, the toilets were so disgusting they felt to be unusable. It felt like he reached the city and called into the first place he saw. He treated the group like children and was patronising on many occasions. On the walking tour of KL it lasted for 5 and a half hours due to his poor organisation. During this activity we had a guide from the Islam temple talk to us about the history and religion, in the few minutes we spent with her she remembered all our names and was clear and informative. We finished in the Chinese temple and then caught the underground went 2 stops and then a walk to lunch. Many of our party were over 70 and this was exhausting. The lunch restaurant was little more than a canteen and once again sub standard to previous experiences with Exodus. On the transfer day to Penang we left the hotel at 9:30, we arrived at the station at 9:45, when asked why we were there an hour and 20 minutes before departure he said it was the railway rules to be there an hour before otherwise they would sell your ticket. We found a notice saying “ we recommend you be here 30 minutes before departing and the train doors close 5 minutes before” ……. Nothing said to be there an hour before. He also said we could get nothing to eat or drink on the train and in our carriage was a buffet bar. We arrived in Penang and on the coach to the hotel asked about the itinerary for the next two days. He just said we would do a walking tour but no information about what we would see. We asked about the optional tours in Langkawi, he said there were two but could give no explanation about the costs or what they entailed. His walking tours were poorly managed and his knowledge inadequate. He did not make me feel safe or as though he had any clear idea about what he was doing. Having a lovely group and going to some interesting places the holiday was very spoilt by this inadequate guide. By the time we got to Penang several of us refused to go on his walking tours and went off by ourselves. I for one could not bear his disorganisation any longer…..but that is not what I expect to do on a guided tour holiday. Malaysian guides poor performance was brought into relief by the caring and friendly nature of our Borneo guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for a lot of days of travelling!

Suggestions

On a positive note the restaurant we were taken to for our final night was very good, ambient setting and enjoyable food. I felt we missed valuable time in Penang as we only ended up with one day due to the travel arrangements. The hotel in Langkwaei is dingy and very disappointing after a further day of travel. Once again not the standard expected. Overall the trip feels poorly executed with too many days spent travelling at times which means that is all that happens. Travelling over lunch meant there was not time to do anything before or after the journey. The internal flights were changed without explanation. When we tried to contact Exodus about this, there was no response until after the flights and even then we were not told why this had happened.

Interesting trip

A well balanced trip combining time in northern Borneo with time on the Malaysian peninsula to experience Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi. The accommodation was very good in most places but, whilst the hotel in Langkawi was adequate, it was in need of refurbishment and, coming as it did...

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andy was excellent and always available and helpful. Felix was good but quietly spoken. He answered questions but didn’t offer much information unless asked.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Book for the twin towers beforehand. It would be useful if Exodus suggested that everybody booked in the same time slot if possible. Our guide had his work cut out shuttling different people to the towers for different time slots and then there was a lot of waiting around afterwards.

Suggestions

We were shocked at how little of the rainforest appeared to be left in northern Borneo. On the boat trips along the Kinabatangam river in many places we could easily see through the trees on the banks to the palm oil plantations behind. We did see 3 wild orangutans and plenty of hornbills and crocodiles. We were also disappointed by the plastic rubbish washed up on the beaches of Langkawi. Every small item we bought was given to us in a plastic bag. The Exodus recommended mangrove tour was excellent with a very knowledgeable local naturalist guide. However while on that your we saw some very poor practice with boats and jet skis going close to dolphins, sea eagles being lured with chicken skin and monkeys being fed crisps by hand from other boats.

Excellent trip to Malaysia

A great trip to Malaysia , a holiday of two halves. Wildlife in Sabah, Borneo then historic cities back on mainland . Covered a lot of ground in a packed itinerary .

Most Inspirational Moment

The amount of wildlife viewed , seeing flying squirrels, the Sepilok Orang Utans sanctuary, crocodile in river . Wandering around Mellacca and Penang old towns.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Borneo - Edwin, very personable and happy to share information regarding local customs . Clear explanations and good sense of humour. Within Borneo we were staying at wilderness lodges so there were not the same number of tourist sites etc as are available on Peninsula in second half of trip. Malaysian Peninsula - Wye , also very personable and super helpful . Ensured everyone in group looked after , always happy to provide advice regarding eateries, tourist sites, travel , costs of attractions, translating in food courts . Not sure Wye ever ate a hot meal with us as she would be busy assisting her guests with translating/recommending food ordering and following up what was delivered matched the order.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Not much cash needed for Borneo ( as staying in wilderness lodges and not many opportunities to spend. Bar bills and possibly extra food/snacks / ice creams/ drinks) . Internal flights the group total luggage allowance is 15KG x number in group . Try to keep luggage weight to 15KG but dont stress if you go over by a small amount as it might be "lost" within group overall total . Take own torches for walking on paths in Borneo and also paved streets on Peninsula towns/cities. ATMs plentiful at KL airport to withdraw cash on first entry to Malaysia , however different banks ( Maybank, CIMB, Public Bank) have different daily limit on withdrawal amount. Always answer "No" to conversion ( otherwise local bank sets conversion rate instead of using Inter Bank Rate ) .

Suggestions

Crammed in lots and saw a huge amount . Trip Notes mostly accurate ( apart from referring to Kota Kinabalu which is not visited or located anywhere near where this trip goes. Obviously copy paste form another trip ) . Mostly 2 nights at each location with some free time, can spend as much or as little with group .

An all encompassing trip

A great way to see the different parts of Malaysia, from the wildlife in Borneo to the different cultures found throughout Malaysia and finishing the tour on the beach in Langkawi. A memorable experience throughout, assisted by the knowledgeable guides on both parts of the tour and a great group.

Most Inspirational Moment

After seeing the Orangutans in the sanctuary, spotting some in the wild whilst on the river cruise was memorable.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both group leaders were knowledgeable, I think in particular Wan on the second part of the tour excelled in helping everyone with there questions. With a full group of 16 it is nearly impossible to satisfy everyone but Wan ensured that, I believe, everyone was sad to see by the end of the tour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just relax and enjoy the different cultures and try everything!

Thank you for a great experience

Amazing experience

October trip to Borneo and Malaysia was full of adventure and surprise, wildlife, rain forest, culture, new flavours and food, big cities and beautiful beaches.

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to choose but visiting Borneo was amazing, having seen so many documentaries on TV.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We had two group leaders, Beverly on Borneo very professional, could not fault her knowledge on all aspects of the wildlife, she was very approachable, always there, calm and gave good advice on preparation for the day's activities, she also was interesting to listen to on any bus/coach travelling. In Malaysia we had Wye, again could not fault her knowledge on the small trips and activities, again very approachable and gave good advice. Both guides were an integral part of the trip and added their own individual vibe appropriately, both very likeable, both made sure everything was smooth running. I hope their earnings reflect their dedication.
