Great memories

We thoroughly enjoyed our Baltic tour and would recommend it to anyone interested in history, architecture, cultural and gastronomic experiences. Although we have travelled extensively in Europe over many years, the three Baltic countries were new destinations for us and they all offer interesting and different dimensions in terms of pre-WW2 history, and post-war and occupation history as well. Beautiful medieval cities and castles are wonderful to visit, but the countryside, seaside and riverside towns were also a pleasure to explore. We were fortunate to have the guidance of an exceptional tour guide in Margarita, who made sure we all enjoyed the experience together, balancing quiet solo moments with memorable group events which were plenty of fun as well. Similarly, the local tour guides we had were all knowledgeable and entertaining as well.

Most Inspirational Moment

So many highlights: the Curonian Spit was a lovely day excursion, all of the capital cities are charming and picturesque, especially comparing the different examples of Art Nouveau architecture, many fascinating museums and so many opportunities to sample local cuisine in each country. A memorable highlight was getting a much better insight into each nation's experiences of wars and occupation and the lengthy struggles for independence. Other highlights included the Latvian National Ballet and the Lithuanian Symphony Orchestra performing Beethoven's 9th with a full choir; an unforgettable highlight for us.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Margarita is an amazing tour leader with a broad and detailed knowledge of the relevant history and culture of each country. She went out of her way to share her expertise and ensured that our group of 17 soon became a friendly team of co-travellers, enjoying the company of Margarita and of each other. Margarita also worked hard to give us the opportunity to book tickets to at least three fabulous musical events (one in each capital).

Advice for Potential Travellers

We started with 4 days in Helsinki before the trip, making the pleasant two-hour ferry journey across to Tallinn to join the start of the tour. We followed the tour with four days in Stockholm, a short flight away. We also booked an extra night in the same hotels before and after the tour, which gave us a bit more time to explore Tallinn and Vilnius at our leisure. The tour is quite fast paced and involves some walking every day, average of 7-10km daily, but our group of (mainly) retirees managed it well. In September, we needed umbrellas two or three times but the showers soon cleared and the weather was mostly very favourable.

A Hidden Gem in Italy

I was travelling as an Exodus Staff Member: The Garfagnana is such a beautiful and quiet part of Italy, a true hidden gem. I did Level 3 walks every day in September, and we were very lucky with the weather: only one rainy day, and otherwise beautiful blue skies, perfect for those incredible 360° views. Every walk was stunning, throughout and specially at the peaks. Staying at Agriturismo Braccicorti was also a highlight, it’s such a beautiful cozy, peaceful farm with so much history, lovingly restored by the owners and almost self-sustainable. We were completely spoiled with amazing local food, cheeses, homemade jams, fresh peaches and apples, and some of the best wine I’ve ever had, ah, i miss the food!

Most Inspirational Moment

The dramatic views throughout the trip, especially on Day 3 when we hiked Monte Sumbra (Tuscany’s Half Dome), reaching the top and being gifted with those incredible 360° views of the Garfagnana, the Apennines, the Apuan Alps and the Versilia coastline was honestly a gift for my eyes and I just couldn’t stop looking around and taking it all in! And then there was the feeling of reaching the peak every day. Thanks to our Tour Leader, Sara, we were encouraged to push ourselves and believe that we could do it, so being able to challenge ourselves, reach those peaks and realise what we were capable of was incredibly inspiring too.

Sara Bull was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. She went above and beyond from the moment we met, was incredibly attentive, encouraging and created such a great sense of community. She shared so much knowledge, history and fun facts along the way. I genuinely feel like I came back a slightly different person because of her :) I’ll always be grateful I met her. And a big shout-out to Pierluigi too, who shared his passion for the history and culture of his hometown.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Trust the Trip Notes and bring everything they recommend! The Garfagnana has microclimates, so layers and good waterproofs are essential, especially in September and October. Bring proper hiking boots, a supportive day pack, and hiking poles if you have them. Gloves are also a good idea for rainy days (I wish I’d had some!) I know it’s annoying to carry all this, but it will make your holiday so much better.

As everyone says the Eagle hunting was amazing - like nothing I’ve ever seen before! Our first view of the Registan in Samarkand.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Vitaliy (Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan) was very knowledgeable, great organiser & time keeper and also fun! Jahongir (Uzbekistan) was equally a great guide - so knowledgeable about everything! (Occasionally told us sl more than we may have needed to know - but did it with great fun, humour & and infectious chuckle!)

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go if you can. I’m in my early 60’s & was a bit concerned re reviews that said trip was too fast paced/ tiring / long journeys etc…….. I don’t know if we were just lucky but all went smoothly for us - train trips were comfortable & fun! Border crossings easy……. No hitches! Coaches all comfy (drivers all excellent!) We went in September & had packed for autumn - but still 28-33 degrees (yurt night was cooler - down to 10 degrees) Points to note: USD must be crisp / clean and post 2013 or they won’t be exchanged for local currency. The larger USD notes (50/100) get better exchange rates. In Bukhara/ Khiva you are able to buy things with USD, otherwise local money only. We found visa / Mastercard widely accepted in towns. 24 hour electricity in yurt camp - easy to charge phones etc. Karakol has a very poor bazaar…….. Bukhara and Khiva are excellent for bazaars! We found food choices to be excellent - lots of salads, soups, vegetables, fruits - we had been led to believe very meat based - but didn’t find this. Locals very friendly, no evidence of crime, never felt unsafe. I’ve travelled extensively & really enjoyed this trip - go for it!

Wonderful scenery and great guide

Our first time in Albania and we loved it. Temperature in late September was warm but comfortable, especially by the coast. Roads felt safe – good surfaces and considerate drivers. Armand, our guide, was knowledgeable, funny and very hard-working. He and Rogens really looked after us. The first day’s cycling was hard but the two easier days meant I was confident to manage the Llogara Pass on the final day. Our group was very friendly and had great laughs along the way.

Most Inspirational Moment

Lunch at Ana’s Taverna on the road near Çarçovë: the best food of the trip. Ana and her son made us feel really welcome and brought dish after dish of delicious home-grown, home-cooked food, finished with amazing honey cake.

Brilliant. Armand shared his passion for his country and made sure everyone was safe and enjoyed themselves. No detail was too small.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We had an extra day in Tirana at the start and two days in Berat at the end of our trip, which I highly recommend. Travelling by bus takes some getting used to: bus terminals seem to be on the outskirts of cities, so you need to factor in getting a local bus or taxi into the centre. Check the destination carefully. You’ll also need Lek, as the bus drivers we met weren’t keen on making change for €20 notes.

From the vast plains of the Serengeti and the acacia-studded savannahs of the Masai Mara to the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater, the shores of Lake Victoria, the fever-tree forests of Lake Naivasha and the spice lands of Zanzibar, this is a REAL adventure encompassing all the iconic sites of East Africa.

Most Inspirational Moment

Watching a fish eagle swoop down metres in front of us on Lake Naivasha before soaring off again with a shriek, fish held tightly between its talons.

Clint had strong logistical skills getting us smoothly from one location to the next without any itinerary interrruptions.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The bus has an inverter and very convenient UK 3-prong plug points at each seat. I took a full-size pillow on the plane with me, which was great for the 9 nights of camping. I'd also suggest bringing along a torch or lantern that can be hung up inside the tent at night.

Before discussing the trip, let me say having Miguel lead it made all the difference! His overall bike touring, cultural knowledge and biking experience…. and enthusiasm made a huge difference.
For me the experience was a bit different because Miguel led my tour a year ago ( Cycling Girona and the Catalan Coast). It was a surprise reunion when we coincidentally met again at the hotel in Barcelona for this trip.
It was a great group-lots of laughs and banter. Everyone got along very well, and the rides each day were different and often spectacular.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling across the marshlands/rice fields of Amposta/Rapita and then stopping for the MOST authentic paella EVER! (I was so full I had to catch a ride back to the hotel on the "Van of Shame/Love" with Genci (our logistics coordinator/rescuer).

MIGUEL! The best! Enthusiastic, smart, funny, and always available to help solve any issues/problems.)

Advice for Potential Travellers

This was my 4th Exodus trip. I did two without e-Bikes (in Portugal), but chose to use an e-bike for this trip. I'm glad I did. I ride at home, but not a lot. If you're not in good shape, an e-bike guarantees you'll be able to manage the longer/steeper days. This trip is rated a 2 which I think is fair. There were a few days with more challenging rides - but mostly only for short stretches.

Excellent mix of activities

A good mix of hiking, kayaking and cycling. Plus a good introduction to Split and Dubrovnik and the islands in between.

Most Inspirational Moment

The optional e-bike tour in Split and an evening food tour of Split that we booked independently. Plus the wine tasting at the H & K winery.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Igor was outstanding.Very knowledgeable about Croatian history and the places we visited. Managed to keep a diverse group of nationalities (UK,USA,Canada) together as a sociable group and keep us to the tight and intense timetable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The hotels were average. Just hair/body wash in showers, so you may want to take your own shampoo. Two of the hotels did not have lifts or luggage ramps on the outside steps, so consider size and weight of luggage. Limited time in Dubrovnik, so consider booking an extra night there. And have some relaxing time after an intense week. The cycling on Mljet Island involves traversing a steep hill at beginning and end of the lake tour. So consider going for the 20 Euro e-bike upgrade, unless you are a very fit and keen cyclist. If not, you will need to push a heavy trail bike up the hills.

The Cango Caves, Plettenberg Bay and the wildlife all in the running. The accommodation was all very good, but be aware that in the game reserve, not 5 star though more than comfortable enough for the remote location.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Malik was a great leader. Knowledgeable, sociable and able to re-organise the programme to cope with some indifferent weather. He seemed to know most of the local population.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The accommodation was all very good, but be aware that in the game reserve, it is not 5 star though more than comfortable enough for the remote location. How can you watch penguins without laughing? Scenery often spectacular, even under cloud cover. We did not do the cable car to Table Mountain due to high winds. A couple of minor gripes: The vegetarian food at Franschoek I thought poor. Giving a fancy name to cabbage with onions as a starter does not get Michelin stars. No vegetarian main course and eventually serving plain gnocchi in what I though was tomato puree was not good enough. The American tipping culture is alive and well in Cape Town. You get to see the big 4 at Kariega, (Lion, Rhino, Buffalo, Elephant) but it seems nobody has seen a leopard there. Overall though, another great trip with lots to see and do. See the Silo Art Gallery on the Cape Town waterfront if you can.

Our ​guide for the week Paolo Longo brought the coastal trails to life with rich local knowledge and expertly tailored pacing across every hike.
Expert local guides at Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius made the history and geology truly captivating.
Hotel Due Torri (Agerola) was the perfect base high above the coast. The owners (both Chefs) held interactive pizza and pasta making sessions and demonstrated how to make the perfect tiramisu, with a special local delicacies lunch and a lively barbecue night.
Couldn’t recommend the whole experience highly enough.

Path of the Gods was the ultimate cliffside hike with the most amazing views.l of the Mediterranean. Exploring the iconic coastal towns of Positano, Amalfi, and the peaceful hilltop terraces of Ravello. Standout day trip exploring the ancient streets of Pompeii and hiking to the top of Mount Vesuvius.

Most Inspirational Moment

It was a fabulous week but there were a few incredible hightlights: the wraparound view of the Supramonte mountains from the hotel in Dorgali is just jaw dropping, particularly at sunset; Cala Luna beach before the crowds descend is beautiful; swimming in stunning waters at Cala Orosei beach with the softest sand; the big walk up to Tiscali and the stunning views across the valley, and bouldering in the incredible Gorrupo Gorge - just magical!

Tony was just brilliant! Caring, calm and effortlessly professional and organised. He was social, friendly and knowledgeable. He's one of the best guides I've been with on an Exodus trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is rated moderate on the activity scale and there were stretches of the walks which were pretty steep or needed hands as well as feet to be engaged. We did the walks in 34degree heat and 60% humidity so unusual weather conditions which made some of the inclines a big tougher than normal, but be prepared for some rocky and rough terrain; and wear grippy shoes in the Gorge because the rocks are slick in places.
