Covering a huge area in this vast country of contrasts.

This was a full-on tour covering a huge part of Brazil, and although you by no means see the whole country this trip is a great taster and feels like you’re getting deeply into different diverse regions and not just skimming the surface. The busy beaches and spectacular sites of Rio are as promised but a real surprise was the huge inner city rainforest park at Tijuca, just beautiful and a real oasis within the madness. South onto Paraty: a unique combination of preserved 17th-century Portuguese colonial architecture, vibrant culture, and natural surroundings. It is a UNESCO-listed site known for its charming cobblestone pedestrian streets, lively nightlife, boat trips to local islands, and exquisite local dining.

There followed an early rise and drive to Sao Paolo to fly to Iguacu. Of couse the Falls didn’t disappoint and for me fulfilled a long ambition to visit. We were told it was relatively quiet but still felt very crowded. But in the heat and spray there was no rush, and watching all the selfie-takers provides its own entertainment!

Another flight to Manaus led us into the hot, humid rainforest Amazon region by boat, and a small lodge run by local people. They looked after and fed us well, and it provided a base for several boat trips and forest walks at day and night. It feels remote and peaceful and allows plenty of time for spotting wildlife in beautiful natural surroundings.

Most Inspirational Moment

To choose one single moment is difficult as this trip covers a wide area, and of course each day finds different experiences. One thing that surprised me was the excellent food. Brazil’s food culture is incredibly diverse, shaped by a blend of Indigenous, African, and Portuguese influences. Each region offers its own specialties, from seafood-rich dishes to hearty, meat-focused cuisine. Staples like rice, beans, cassava, and tropical fruits form the basis of many meals. Every time I ate fish it was fresh and beautifully presented. Meeting the indigenous people at the cassava processing place was a lovely time as they demonstrated the incredible uses for their staple crop.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The leader Frederico Crema (Fred) was the ideal guide for this kind of tour. He had extensive knowledge of the tourist sites and local customs, wildlife and a talent for logistics, organisation and communication. This was the first outing for this trip for Exodus but not for Fred. He had a lot of experience in trips of all kinds around Brazil and he handled everything with enthusiasm, ease and good humour. It was a small group and he kept us informed and entertained. He had a love of food and music and these things came in useful as he arranged for us to eat at some unique and special places, and suggested live music venues on several evenings. The Bottles Club (birthplace of the Bossa Nova) in Rio was a real highlight.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack light as it's a warm climate with varied environments. Breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, and swim wear for beaches/rivers. The walk in Tijuca can be steep and wet under foot. Water bottle to stay hydrated. Carry a copy of your passport, and a small day bag for outings. Power adapters are 3 pin Type N, but I'd buy one in Rio as they are much cheaper there and you probably won't need it outside Brazil. There are some long drives and early starts for internal flights, but as this trip was in development and our feedback to the leader is taken on board this could be adjusted in future trips. If Fred is your guide trust his judgement, if he suggests something just do it. You won't regret it 🙂

Sunny WinterMarch 2026

A fantastic trip, thoroughly recommend it. The scenery is amazing and in my opinion the best way to see it is by snow mobile, a true wilderness experience. The dog sledding was good as was the ice caving. In fact everything about the trip was brilliant.

Most Inspirational Moment

Snow mobiling to the east coast.

Thoughts on Group Leader

All the leaders for the activities were very good, friendly and knowledgeable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It is cold, especially if there's a wind as it brings the temperature down considerably. Have plenty of warm layers. Both with the dog sledding and snowmobiling you're issued with warm suits. I also used insole foot warmers from the Heat Company. These keep your feet warm for up to 8hours, available on Amazon.

Best of Sri Lanka

It exceeded our expectations.

The tour was fantastic, great group of people. The tour guide Mak went above and beyond our expectations. He was informative, fun, caring and gave us a real insight into the culture, people and had a vast knowledge of each place we visited. He went out of his way to make my birthday special whilst we were on the trip, and always ensured we were organised and happy. Fantastic trip all round.

Most Inspirational Moment

The bicycle ride and lunch with the family was fantastic.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mak was fantastic. He is a great asset to Exodus, knowledgeable, caring, funny and so passionate about sharing his country and vast knowledge with us. He made a great trip so memorable. We cannot thank him enough for his contribution to our holiday.

Best of Sri Lanka

A lovely week with good hotels – my first ‘adventure’ holiday and as a solo traveller. The cycling day is great for viewing the countryside and getting nearer to rural communities, elephants in the wild (and sometimes on the main roads) including a rarer tusker and a baby, temples enriched by insightul explanations of customs from our guide, climbing the Sigiriya rock was strenuous but paced with good railings for support, interesting tea-growing and processing, The Grade 3 white-water rafting is definitely worth doing and not that scary though you need to be mobile to descend the steps to the river. Good food, if spicy, though Sanjeewa was a helpful guide on how spicy!

Very straightforward booking, direct communication by phone and email, easy arrangement of pre-tour hotel to fit with my prior commitments in Sri Lanka. Very interesting tour, nicely challenging for my inexperience of such trips, helped by being in a small and friendly group. Our guide, Sanjeewa, was a really great guide – very knowledgeable and professional but always there to support us with a good sense of humour too. Felt very safe throughout and very careful driving from Donald.

Most Inspirational Moment

All of it as a whole was great and really enjoyable. Suited me very well as a first adventure holiday but I liked the blend of cultural interest and mild physical challenges with opportunity to see the wider country and landscapes beyond the urban.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sanjeewa was a great guide and blended very well with our group whilst maintaining professionalism throughout. He was definitely a major contributor to my enjoyment of the tour and certainly to my learning about Sri Lanka and its culture. He answered all our questions about the country and was clearly very competent. He provided realistic expectations for the physical challenges so we knew in considerable detail what to expect. Sanjeewa is a great asset to the Exodus team in Sri Lanka.

Best of Sri Lanka

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mak was polite, hard working organised and delightful. His passion and knowledge of his country was wonderful and he wanted to share so much of it in such a short time. We all felt safe travelling with him and he went above and beyond to make our stay in Sri Lanka special.

Best of Sri Lanka

Well organised, the guides were knowledgeable and friendly. The experiences on the trip were great.

Most Inspirational Moment

Each day offered something new and exciting, but my highlight was the cycling through the villages and the meal delivered at the homestead. It felt ‘off the beaten track’.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The tour guide, Mak and his support team (driver and assistant) were excellent. Could not have been helpful and friendly. Mak’s passion for his country was so evident and his desire to give everyone on the trip a great experience was clear. Mak, was kind, caring, considerate and extremely knowledgeable.
