Iceland Northern Lights

This was a four night tour that really packed a punch.
As well as the chance of seeing the Northern Lights we saw glaciers, ice caves, geysers, lagoons, waterfalls, the black beach etc, etc

Most Inspirational Moment

There were a number... a double rainbow over one of the waterfalls, walking on a glacier (complete with ice axe and crampons), the brilliant ice blue and white of the lagoon with seals basking in the sun, getting soaked by an unusually large spurt from the geyser, the meals out with the complete group. Scanning the skies on the rooftop on the hope of seeing the Northern Lights.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Petur was totally brilliant. He certainly went the extra mile for our group. Arranging meals for us - and then joining us to eat with us. Taking us on unscheduled 'detours' to show us even more of his beautiful country. He was extremely knowledgeable about Iceland, the history, the people the geology, the landscape and he delivered his knowledge with a sense of humour. He managed the perfect balance of narrating the tour but giving us space and peace to enjoy it for ourselves.. There was a lot to fit in so he was also very good (in the very nicest way) at keeping us 'on schedule' for our various stops. Thank you so much Petur.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There is so much more to see in Iceland than the Northern Lights. Sadly we didn't see them on this trip but I had a truly amazing time and I would recommend this trip to anyone who has a love of the 'great outdoors' and the natural world.

The Northern Lights

I booked this holiday purely as I got a weeks respite for my sick husband. This was all I could find to fit with my dates. Well it was meant to be!! There were 15 of us in the group and as I was travelling alone I was a little apprehensive to say the least. The group was fabulous, the leader Ibi, was superb.she took us to all the places in the itinerary which were all super and we were so well informed.

Most Inspirational Moment

Every day was exciting, from waterfalls to geysers to glaciers, to film shows, museums and tomato growing !! I was inspired the way Icelanders seem to be so innovative. In 2010 we worried about the ash cloud disrupting our flights, look what happened to them and how they have moved forward.......

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader Ibi was the best!!!

Go,go,go...

Snowshoeing in Finland

This was an excellent holiday at the cosy and warm Oulanka Basecamp. We were provided with clothing that kept us toasty and boots that were very comfortable. The food was locally sourced as much as possible, tasty and filling.
Overall, I cannot fault this holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

There are many - lunch at a camp fire, the peace out on the fjell, dog sledding, and meeting a friendly group of people. All wonderful!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tessa Kokkonen was a brilliant leader. She gave us info about Finland, it's history, and about the wildlife. Tessa was full of enthusiasm, helpful and had a great sense of humour. Nothing was too much trouble for her. Excellent!

Advice for Potential Travellers

The outdoor clothing provided is very good so save the space in your cases.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Feb-March 2016

Very enjoyable trek to Poon Hill and ABC which must have some of the best panoramic views in the Himalayas. Interesting group of trekkers, Well organised with excellent leader, guides and porters.

Most Inspirational Moment

Spectacular early morning views of Annapurna range from ABC after heavy snowfall the previous afternoon. We were very fortunate to have beautifully clear days at both Poon Hill and ABC.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Kumar did an excellent job leading the trek assisted by his three guides and seven porters. He managed the pace of the trek well to cope with trekkers who wanted to walk faster as well as those who wanted to spend more time taking photos and/or identifying birds. His approach was professional but he was always jovial and willing to provide information on the local culture and traditions as well as wildlife, trees, plants etc. He and his friendly team of guides helped to ensure that the trek was such an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I followed the Exodus 'get fit' program for the 6 or 7 weeks prior to the trek and found that this provided an adequate level of fitness even for a nearly 70 yr old who lives in a rather flat part of England and spends much more time playing golf, tennis and cycling than hill walking. Some of the days were quite demanding, especially the day climbing about 1300 m up to MBC. Take a good sleeping bag as it was cold at ABC (-10C).

Snow Shoeing and Much More

Finland is beautiful and Oulanka Basecamp a superb place to spend an active week. The facilities, equipment, food, activities and above all the staff – for whom nothing was too much trouble and who all clearly loved their work – were first-rate. The room accommodation was comfortable and the communal lounge, bar, sauna, hot tub and dining area in a separate building a few seconds walk away. We wanted and expected cold weather – which we got – but were never cold because everywhere was well heated and the winter clothing and boots provided were of the best quality (and all in with the price). The Basecamp is in the middle of nowhere – again, wanted and expected – in an area of forest, lakes, rivers (aka Finland!) but also unexpected hills and, at times, steep climbs.

What I liked best? Pretty much everything and there were not enough hours in a day to do all I wanted. Also being wonderfully tired every evening after a hard day of snow shoe walking, cross-country skiing, snowmobile and/or dog sledding were a great aid to a good night/s sleep.

Highlights major and minor – in no particular order – were:
1. The food. Loads of it and delicious, including the packed lunches and special energy bars. (We burned a lot of calories).
2. Eating lunch around camp fires at wilderness shelters in a gentle snowfall.
3. My first time on skis. (We haven’t laughed so much in ages).
4. Falling a lot. (Yes, I’m serious. I fell off everything – snow shoes, skis – level and downhill – snowmobile and dog sled), and once nearly ended up in a river, but only hurt myself a bit a couple of times.)
5. Dog sled day. A marvellous experience and enough to turn this dog-phobe into a husky fan.
6.The company of like-minded strangers to add to wife and two good friends.

Lowlights:
Not a thing, other than we didn’t get the Northern Lights, but that’s beyond the Basecamp’s control, and I couldn’t do everything. We’ll have to go back!

The rooms are of two types. The upper rooms are a bit bigger, have a small mezzanine for storage or to sleep in and a balcony.

All heating and hot water comes from a wood pellet-burning boiler and a wood-burning fire in the lounge. All clothing and gear is provided to reduce luggage weight – a small detail ,but a nice idea – and almost all food provided sustainable and locally sourced.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many. Probably the dog sled day, but sitting round a crackling fire outdoor in an light snowfall whilst toasting packed lunch sandwiches and drinking hot chocolate (laced with a shot of whisky) was hard to beat.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide, Tessa Kokkonen, led us with confident knowledge and expertise, breaking up the long walks with frequent halts to talk about Finland and its wildlife, forest, history and folklore. She included traditional stories and identified the animal tracks we found in the snow.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Save your luggage space by not taking outdoor clothing, skis, boots, etc that you think you will need as everything is provided. On the other hand, if you think you might need to replace something you run out of or break, require medicines, another book, etc. take these as there is not much in the way of shops outside the airports.

from the Indian Ocean to the Arabian Sea

This was an amazing holiday and has completely converted me, before the holiday pretty much a non cyclist and very much a novice, to taking more cycling holidays. I love India and this was such a good way to get to see a lot of the real rural India. Cycling through villages, avoiding dogs, goats, cows, other cyclists and pedestrians, as well as the inevitable motorbikes, tuk tuks and buses and not a few potholes and speed bumps, was always fantastic, as the children all wave and shout hello, as do quite a lot of the adults. Its a complete joy.

Most Inspirational Moment

Realising that I can actually cycle the distances and get up those darned hills! Its difficult to single anything out. Cycling down hill for about 13 kilometres nonstop was entertaining, and the homestay at the end of that was absolutely spectacular. The hotels we stayed in were generally very good. Every day brought new things to enjoy. We also had a brilliant group, we all got on well and encouraged each other. The food, by the way was outstanding, mostly vegetarian. I think that no one was ill with the usual tummy problems, and we ate some amazing meals, especially lunches on banana leaves in little places we would never have found by ourselves.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Seeka ( I think my spelling is wrong, apologies) was excellent, very helpful and anxious to make the most of the trip for us all. As a result everything went very smoothly. He was very entertaining and knowledgeable which was great and had endless patience. The three other guides were also great, although I must admit that I had a soft spot for the wonderful Abi, who cycled at the back of the group ( my usual place) and gave me a helping hand when I needed it!

Advice for Potential Travellers

The March trip did get very hot , about 40 degrees on a few days, which is very hot to cycle in! It was also very very humid. The trip starts of on mostly flat roads, which is good to get used to before you get to the hills, which are challenging. I took my own comfortable saddle, which I was very glad to have, as the bikes were ok, but quite heavy. Clothes that are made of modern sports fabrics that dry quickly are best, as though the hotels will do laundry there often isn't much time as most days you move on. Take plenty of pens to donate to passing children, as the "Pen, Pen" cry is often heard and it will make you very popular.

Late season skiiing - Kvitavatn

This being my first holiday in Scandinavia, not having skied for a few years and booked at the last minute I had some trepidation over what to expect. What I got was a very enjoyable holiday, great cross country skiing routes both on and off piste and great group and tour leader to share it with.

Most Inspirational Moment

After a few days struggling with cross country skis it started to come together and get more enjoyable - the views down over Ryukan and from the higher points on the skiing routes were stunning. Also great were the off-piste routes weaving in and out of the trees in the deep snow.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mary was superb - very patient and great instructor. The slide show of photos taken throughout the week on the last day was very interesting!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Cross country skis are a different animal to downhill skis and more tricky to master - I spent the Monday and Tuesday falling over a lot and trying to re-acquaint myself with skills I thought I already had on downhill skis such as snowplough turns and traversing an incline. Level 2 on cross country skis with no previous experience is doable but hard work for the first few days although it did did start to come together after that. Also as mentioned in other reviews do buy wine or beer at the huge duty-free on arrivals at Oslo airport as it costs more at the lodge. Bear in mind you cannot drink your own alcohol in communal areas - only stuff you have bought at reception which at the time was cans of Tuborg, cans of a sweet Norwegian cider, a few local beers and various wine bottles between 200-300 Kroner.

Didn't want the trip to end...

An amazing trip taking in a variety of national parks to see an endless variety of wildlife, just magical.

Most Inspirational Moment

I had hopes of seeing Toucans, Macaws and Quetzals, we saw them all, but our best moments were watching the hummingbirds buzz around the feeders and even have them perch on our hands whilst they fed - truly amazing little creatures and fun to photograph.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andreas was just excellent, like having a fully fledged naturalist on the trip with us, he knew everything about everything. The trip was well organised and we got all the right advice along the way. A big thank you to John the bus driver too, who did an amazing job of getting our bus up and down the hairpin bends and through some tight gaps.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make the most of any free time by wandering around the grounds of the lodges, I saw so much more by slowly looking around and investigating rustling sounds or bird calls. Be prepared for very hot and humid weather on the Pacific side and keep drinking lots of water. Ear plugs might help at night as the constant chirping of crickets and frogs can be quite loud and some lodges don't have glass in the windows, just mesh, so it's like you're outside.

A wonderful week in Jordan

A fantastic week packed full with different experiences and giving you a chance to experience Jordan at its best.

Most Inspirational Moment

The variety of activities really made the trip special. I loved the high places walk at Petra, the time spent in the Wadi Rum desert, snorkeling in the red sea and of course the delicious Jordanian food!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Khalid was great: very knowledgeable and keen to ensure that everyone got the most from their trip. Nothing was too much trouble. He was passionate about his country and always happy to answer our many questions.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go! Don't be put off by Jordan's location - the people are incredibly welcoming and our whole group felt incredibly safe during the trip. This is the time to visit Jordan!

A Taste of Cuba

This holiday included a variety of activities and locations which gave a flavour of the country. Given the pressure on the island as tourist numbers increase, without the accompanying infrastructure, the accommodation was better than I had anticipated. The range of trips was good with potential to choose other options. Plenty of advice was given regarding the best places to eat and visit in free time.

Most Inspirational Moment

The view across Havana from the Ambos Mundos hotel roof-top terrace.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent. She was able to fill in all the background information required with plenty of local knowledge and a sense of humour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared to be flexible if accommodation changes.
