the delights of uzbekistan

The people of uzbekistan are so open and friendly. The cities and the monuments within them live up to all expectations and there is so much to see. The Yurts are comfortable and spacious, toilet facilities at the camp are good, much better than expected. Camel ride and walk through the desert was a great experience and finishing up with a swim and a picnic beside the lake was a great rounding off of the camp experience.
There are long bus journeys on this trip between the towns and some of the roads are quite rough but we felt safe in the hands of our driver.
Food is much better than expected and there is more variety than the trip notes seem to indicate. Nobody appeared to get any serious stomach bugs on the trip which is unusual when the weather was so hot. I think this was because our guide advised on good eating places and kept us right.
The currency issues are not as difficult as hinted at and are easily managed. Security, including arrival and departure at the airport was robust but not a problem

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to say as there were many. For me the Registan and other monuments in Samarkand were probably the most inspirational thing but the night in a yurt camp with camel ride was amazing as were the desert forts. Or maybe the most inspirational thing was the openess and friendliness of the uzbek people. A trip of many highlights

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dilshod was patient, understanding, organised and extremely knowledgable on history and local customs. He had a good sense of humour, gelled well with the group and shared many personal experiences of his life in uzbekistan. He made the trip easier for us all and kept us going when the heat of the day made us wilt. I think his guidence and attention in terms of directing us to eating places also helped to keep us healthy

Advice for Potential Travellers

Travel as light as possible, have a torch for the Yurt camp and make sure you drink lots and lots of water. Take money in US dollars and slap on the sun cream before you go out.

Back to back holidays

I wanted to do two holidays back to back, one in Bulgaria spending an extra day in Sofia and then go on to Greece for my second week. I was concerned about the transfers/ pickups etc. However all turned out very well, using the metro in both countries was very easy, with the hotels provided very convenient to the stations and main attractions.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to walk in the countryside of both countries plus being able to see the sites of both capitols. I would suggest that Exodus do this holiday as a standard trip. It makes for a good combination for a two week break.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both the leaders I had were very good. As I have now done 13 trips with Exodus and 12 with another company who's name begins Ex, I can tell you this is not always the case!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do it !! As I always say travel has made me poorer in the pocket but richer in the mind. I feel privileged to have been to so many places [all be it I worked hard to get the money to enable me to do so] My outlook on life and my opinions on things has been enhanced by my travels. As a person from a humble background, I would not have dreamed as a boy/young man that I would get to go to the places I have been to in my life time. Every trip is a bonus !

LAND OF THE TIGER

This was a great trip for seeing Tigers in the wild a very enjoyable couple of weeks , a good mix of adventure , relaxation and culture , for the first time visitor to India it certainly gives a good insight to local life but at the same time mainly focusing on the safari’s , the Tigers and wildlife !! Our group had some great sightings we saw 17 Tigers including cubs …An amazing time ….

Most Inspirational Moment

Being entranced by beautiful wild Tiger laying on a bank in the shade up close to the road for the first time , An amazing feeling looking into its eye's !! Witnessing a live kill by a large male tiger , from it's stealthy stalk across the road , to the raw explosiveness of its attack , and its struggle to finish the kill , ( a 20 minute once in a life time moment ) a truly awesome experience !! Langurs - I could watch these monkeys play all day ....

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was Krishna , a great guy , had everything well organised , was there to answer any questions and solve any problems , a fun guy to be around and very knowledgeable and informative , joined in with the dynamics of our group , very passionate about his country , the local people and the wildlife and protection of the Tigers .. A real cool guy , great to have met him , a major part of the whole experience ... A credit to Exodus !!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Embrace the whole trip the people, the culture , try not to be hooked up on seeing a tiger , they can be very elusive , they are not just siting everywhere , I had 7 safari's before my first encounter but when the time comes it is magical !! There is a lot of other wildlife to enjoy .... The safari's can be very dusty and hot in the summer months , tracks can be very bumpy but the drivers do a good job , pack less than you think , good laundry service at resorts : The Train journey was different , but was enjoyable , just go with the locals and enjoy the flow so may be surprised ... Sightseeing at the end of the trip can be hectic , but just embrace the beauty of the Taj and the Red Fort ... Enjoy everything and you will be rewarded with a great experience !!

Cycling the Dalmation Coast - May 2017

Once again Exodus has delivered a fabulous holiday in a beautiful destination. We highly recommend this trip and could easily have spent more time cycling the islands and exploring the coast. The cycling was interesting with a variety of terrain – some long but not steep climbs, which meant some refreshing descents. The moderate rating felt right. We’ll definitely go back to explore Dubrovnik and other parts of Croatia. Can’t recommend this trip highly enough!

Most Inspirational Moment

It's difficult to decide on a single inspirational moment as Croatia proved to be a beautiful country with stunning scenery everywhere! Cycling along the coastal roads of Korcula and the vineyards of Peljesac Peninsula were particularly memorable - the views are spectacular. We walked to the top of cable car in Dubrovnik - well worth it for a magnificent view of the old city. We were blessed with excellent weather and great company with our group. This holiday was all the better for having people to share it with.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alan Skulic was excellent - well organised, knowledgeable, reassuring, calm, sociable and at ease with everyone in our group. Most of all, he had a great sense of humour - he understood the British sense of humour, apparently as a result of watching British comedy programmes when growing up.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Yes! Do it! It's a beautiful country and the holiday will stay in our memories forever. We are leisure cyclists and were a bit intimidated by the hill climbs but Alan was reassuring and supportive. We faced the challenge and feel much more confident about overcoming future cycling challenges. And we were rewarded with stunning scenery. The roads are quiet and the road surfaces are in much better condition than those at home, which again made cycling much more pleasurable. We highly recommend taking the optional trip to Mljet and the guided walk around Dubrovnik. Ana, our guide was excellent.

A Really enjoyable experience

Having been on a number of Exodus walking holidays, I think this was one of the best. The walking is accurately described in the trip notes and although 6 successive days of walking was tiring, the different walking paces of all in the group were accommodated and there were good opportunities for stops for lunch, coffee and dinner, all well researched by Jose, our group leader.

Jose was always cheerful and lead the group well, identifying and recommending the best places to eat and reserving spots along the way - really important when there are so many walkers and, in some places, not a lot of places to sit and eat.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Look after your feet by having good and comfortable boots, walking trainers or walking sandals! Make sure you are used to walking on successive days, so that you avoid the risk of blisters

Cycling the Dalmation Coast

As a group of six ladies who are hobby cyclists, there was some in trepidation, but we needn’t have been concerned. The support of our guide, Marijo and the group, along with our driver, Dani, made for a highly enjoyable week and so much was packed in. We needed to cycle each day to work off the lovely food we ate each day

Most Inspirational Moment

For me the countryside was so beautiful. It was really quiet with not much traffic and the smells of cypress trees, rosemary and jasmine were just sublime. When there were hills ( and boy there were some!) the encouragement of the group was tremendous and don't forget at the top are some fantastic views, but a glorious ride down!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mario was so supportive to all the different abilities within our cycle group. Not once did he get impatient or make you feel awkward. He was always informative in his briefings without making you feel patronised. He could enjoy a laugh with the group and if there was any language barrier in the shops etc he was always there to help out. He especially sourced one restaurant for my croatian friend who wanted a particular dish and several craft beer cafe for our brewer friend. He was the element that made our holiday so special.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I am glad I took padded cycling shorts and although I had done some training before, perhaps I should have done more to be able to cycle all those hills. I did take the bus on one occasion but was never made to feel a failure. Make sure you're happy to cycle in some traffic although in Croatia it is quite quiet. Don't forget your cycling gloves (some in our group did). We also asked Exodus before we went if there were bike bags, they said no, but infact there were bags to sit on the front of your handle bars, very useful to carry sunscreen or jackets etc. Also take your own water bottle. Pack light, as you don't want to pack and unpack full suitcases.

Lost City of Choqueqeirou - Adventure in the Andes

This trip was an adventure of a lifetime for me. In places it was hard and very hard. The support from the trek staff team was superb making the effort worthwhile. Choquequeiro itself is like something from an Indiana Jones film in it’s setting and to get there is hard.

This was the hardest physical achievement of my life and couldn't have happened without the trek team.

Rolando (leader) and Jonny (assistant) worked hard to make the trip amazing. If you go you will learn so much about the people, plants and animals of the Andes

Advice for Potential Travellers

Prepare in advance with physical training. If possible, spend an extra day in Cuzco at the start to help get over altitude sickness if you are flying straight to Cuzco from Uk

Walking in Tuscany

Wonderful trip. It was very well organised and planed. We are looked after by the leader and accommodation’s team very well.Wonderful location and great walks.

It was a very clear day. Fantastic view from the top of Monte Prado. We could see the line of mountain range all the way.

She is very efficient, informative, and good communicator as well as funny and humourous. Her information for the rest day is excellent, too.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you learn a few Italian words, your trip would be more fun. Because you are going to the real Tuscany mountain village, not a big tourist place.

Croatia: islands and mountains

What a great week. Although the actual days of activity only number 6 you pack masses in, whilst still feeling unrushed. Food great, scenery stunning, guide brilliant, hotels comprehensive, Croatian people friendly, walks perfect. We just loved this holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

Day 6 and achieving the extension walk having walked down through the gorge at the end of the Paklenica walk (a really great day already with an unexpected accordion-accompanied beer song sung by Zeliko, our hosts at the mountain hut, and another guide) we then had the option to do an extension walk. Some of the group went back in the mini bus whilst the rest of us carried on. This was a really challenging walk, with heights, scrambling over really sharp rocks/boulders, climbing steep areas, plus the additional distance, but that made it hugely rewarding once completed and a great end to the day.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Zeliko is just a fab leader. Enthusiastic, friendly, knowledgeable and funny. A problem solver and smoother away of difficulties. He even produced Gaffa tape when my husband's boots started to fall apart!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Walking sticks - whilst my husband and I did not take or use sticks and managed very well without them, others in the group did find them hugely beneficial as the going can be rocky and unstable underfoot on many of the walks. Temperature - we went at th end of May and the temperature was generally lower to mid 20s (C), with some wind (very welcome) as you went higher. We had a very small amount of rain which rarely lasted long (We never used our waterproof trousers and I only used my coat once) . Some of the paths however are exposed and due to the rocky environment could create a very hot walking environment- in the summer this would be very hard going. Because of these varieties in temperature and conditions it is worth taking clothes to layer. Hats and sunglasses used daily. A good pair of boots is essential for the terrain. Money - exodus suggest a daily amount for food and drink but do take along more to pay for guided tours of Dubrovnik and Split. Having said that ATMs available everywhere and most places took cards.

Walking in Pulia and Matera

This took us first to Matera- the most amazing town to visit!!! and then on to Alberobello. Beautiful scenery, wonderful flora and fauna, interesting historic towns and villages, wonderful local food and wine……
We were lucky in being with a friendly group AND we had an outstanding guide- Giuseppe!!!
