Best trip so far

This was our second Exodus trip as a family of four, all adults of course. The trip had a bumpy start as we were delayed and missed connections so ended joining the trip 24 hrs later, have to say Exodus were incredibly helpful and easy to contact outside of hours.
We loved the scenery, saw loads of condors and some truly amazing views. The weather was perfect and the transfers mostly short. We also enjoyed some spectacular scenic lake crossings.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling along roads with lush pastureland one side and snow capped volcanoes on the other, sitting on a volcanic ash beach in Pucon and swimming in the lake on Christmas day

Thoughts on Group Leader

Taiel and his family were super guides, very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful in every way

Advice for Potential Travellers

We are vegetarian which was okay mostly especially in the towns, lunch stops a bit more challenging especially for our daughter who is vegan, we got by as we took lots of snack foods too. Be prepared for some rocky roads, lots of gravel at times but well worth it, especially near the lava fields.

Amazing Amalfi

There is a reason while Amalfi is one of the best selling tours offered by Exodus Tours. It is a gorgeous place to visit (even in January when it is freezing cold!) I love the variety of expeditions. My favorites were hiking 3,000 steps down to Amalfi, walking the Path of the Gods and celebrating January 1 on the Circuito Tre Calli. I also enjoyed the private tours of Pompei and Herculaneum.

Most Inspirational Moment

It was around 9 in the morning and the sky was turning pale pink and lavender and yellow. We stopped to take photos of the scene below on the Path of the Gods—mountains, sea and rugged cliffs. I was awestruck by the poetry of the moment. I blogged about it—https://femalesolotrek.com/2019/01/02/path-of-the-gods/

Thoughts on Group Leader

Severio manages to juggle everything--site closings, road closings, snow and more—with calm. He made our group feel so welcome. I also want to thank the Italian family who runs the hotel where we stayed. They are fantastic. Their hospitality made us feel like family.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Late December/early January is a tricky time for this tour. We were lucky with regard to the weather although it did snow at the end. It was really cold hiking because if the strong winds. You need to dress warmly. Bring snow boots!

Don’t understand what you want here

Some days could have had longer scheduled activities especially cross country skiing and snowshoeing – could make more of this aspect and explore further/more

Local Basecamp team absolutely superb!

Pretty accurate title, though we had 3 days in the interior

We had a terrific fortnight. I would have given 5 stars but for the hotel in Cahuita and for the choice of that location. We saw a great many birds and animals, did some wonderful walks and boat trips and experienced some of the lesser known parts of Costa Rica which were well worth experiencing. A small group – only 6 of us – but we got on excellently and it was a lovely atmosphere.

I think I would have reduced the amount of road travel slightly. The drive to and from Cahuita was long and I don’t think any of us felt it was really worth it, although we did good sloth spotting there and the walk in the National Park was lovely. We couldn’t go in the sea as it was too rough (both there and in Tortuguero) which was a big disappointment, as it meant we only swam and snorkelled on the Pacific side at Drake’s Bay, and for me, the snorkelling was one of the main draws.

Most Inspirational Moment

The snorkelling trip at Drake's Bay, though I loved all the boat travel, and the trips to and around Tortuguero were brilliant The birdlife at Savegre was astounding, and finally getting to see the quetzal after 2 days of searching, was hugely exciting.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Allan was a delight. He was thorough, caring, attentive and good fun. He was very knowledgeable about both the flora and fauna, and also very happy to explain to us about Costa Rican life, social affairs and customs. His English is excellent. Alejandro, the driver, was also lovely.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I found some of the hotels to be a bit basic- so for example, some had very low levels of light, making it hard to read at night. One (Cahuita) didn't have shampoo and several didn't have a hairdryer. Most didn't have air-con, but just fans. I think the others on the trip were less bothered by this than I was, but they had all done holidays with you before and were more used to the level of comfort being offered. Wifi was usually only really viable in the main reception, or bar areas. However, I think Costa Rica is a wonderful destination, with great scenic variety (and temperature). I'm not sure that the trip notes (which I've now lost) underline the need for warm clothing in the Savegre area. We all found it very chilly. Raingear also essential- despite it being the dry season.

Amazing!

What an adventure! We had been planning this trip for a couple of years and it did not disappoint. It was a real test of character – the coldest winter in a long time and -27 at base camp. The views are simply stunning – we had clear skies so every step was a different view. There were times when sat in our icy teahouse room that we questionned what we were doing but it really is a once in a lifetime experience that we will never forget.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting through the Lukla flight! I hate flying so that was one of my biggest fears but all part of the experience. Getting to base camp was surreal ..... still can't believe I have been!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Brilliant. DB looked after us really well and kept everyone motivated. Always cheerful and had lots of laughs. Kami and Kami worked really hard and woke us up every morning with a big smile and hot 'knock knock' tea!

Advice for Potential Travellers

A reasonable level of fitness is required. Take plenty layers and thermals for winter trips. Dont be afraid to take anti sickness tablets... they worked for me. Take plenty loo roll and chocolate .... more expensive to buy as you go further up. Have a hot chocolate and pastry n Dingboche cafe. Book it!

Wilderness Adventure

The experience overall was very good on many lelvels. The basecamp was not luxorious but the people are very welcoming and it is very clean. My only criticism is about the food, I cannot understand how it one can serve frozen berries with ice cream as dessert when it is -20 outside!

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the Northern Lights and the Husky sledging

Thoughts on Group Leader

very nice indeed, lovely person

Advice for Potential Travellers

yes, bring warm undergarments!! the rest they provide.

Reply from Exodus

We would like to thank James for his feedback. We were pleased to read that he found Machu Picchu to be brilliant, although we are sorry that he has concerns about the cost of the trip. Following previous correspondence, we have responded to these concerns on an individual basis. Taking into account all of the reviews we have received, we remain confident that the price of our Inca Trail & the Amazon Rainforest tour offers excellent value for money and we feel that we are very clear in our trip notes about the expected tipping amounts.   Sarah Ahern – Product Manager

Varied riding in the sun

This is a great winter getaway for people with at least some off road mountain bike experience, most, but not all of the rough and technical sections can be avioded but there was nothing which was excessively technical.
The scenery was impressive with a good variety of landscape to enjoy.
Dont think this trip is all downhill, there are some demanding climbs.
The leaders, Liz and Ranu were excellent, looking after everybody from skilled riders to the less experienced.
Hotels were pretty good, food was adequate rather than good, apart from the lunches on trail which were always good, plenty of snacks and drinks always on hand.
A quibble which didnt affect me personally was that some of the bikes were supplied with the brakes reversed, which is an accident waiting to happen, and unfortunately one of our group needed a trip to hospital for a clean up and a stitch after braking hard to avoid a child, unfortunately he was used to the brakes the UK way round and pressed hard on what he thought was the rear brake, and went over the bars as he pulled hard on front brake which was were the rear normally is ! Unfortunately the first time we saw the bikes was at the first trailhead so no time to swap and bleed the brakes.
But overall it was an excellent trip with a large but lovely group of people, highly recommended, just check the bikes are set up properly.

Most Inspirational Moment

Riding some of the rough sections and the descent on the last day.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure the bikes are set up for your preferences, take a saddle, handlebar grips and pedals so your contact points are what you are used to.

Excellent trip

Most Inspirational Moment

Traveling through the different landscapes and climate zones

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alex Aguilera is a very good group leader.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It's the excellent opportunity to see different parts of Chile in a single trip but any future traveler should be ready to spend a lot of time commuting from one place to another. It’s absolutely worth it but should be noted.

Riding up rocks

Great trip with excellent leaders, stunning landscapes and challenging trails

Most Inspirational Moment

Every day the landscapes and rides were exceptionally good but the final days ride was great for the views and variety of trails and the amazing descent to the sea

Thoughts on Group Leader

Liz and Radu were always professional and expert in their management of the the varied skills within the group . Their knowledge of the area, bike skills, good humour, planning and organisational skills were excellent. They made the holiday run safe, smooth and well.
