Temples, Trains and T'cherry Blossom

An absolutely brilliant introduction to Japan: Plenty of time to see Kyoto and Tokyo as well as sampling the delights of the Japanese alps in Spring. And, of course, the cherry blossom. We went in April and hit it just right.
We experienced ancient Japanese culture with an array of stunning temples and modern Japan where the simple phrase “Shopping” cannot do justice to the experience that is the Ginza (and other parts of Tokyo) on a Saturday. Nearly all the travelling on this trip is by train – which I thought was fantastic. Bullet trains and little narrow gauge jobs up in the mountains – and ALL of them we spot on time.
Staying in Royokans was interesting – if a little challenging to my aging joints – and pretty basic but it’s worth the effort for the experience and the hot tubs.

Most Inspirational Moment

The free day in Takayama. Ancient village atmosphere, Cheery trees full of blossom cascading down over babbling brooks right through town. Just delightful - and the best burger lunch in Japan. This visit to Hiroshima museum was pretty sobering but if you have spent your life post 1945 then it is well worth the effort.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Good English and plenty of energy - perhaps a bit too much at times. He managed to herd our group around - on and off trains , metros etc without any mishap. BUT it was his first trip and he gave one bit of bad advice about using our JR passes on our spare day - which cost us ! Be careful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Restaurants can be very challenging with not a word of English in sight. MY advice - head for the multi-story shopping malls. The all seem to have BIG food courts on the top floors - - that stay open long after the store have closed. Nothing like you'd find at Bluewater but really very good restaurants - lots of them so plenty of choice - and most had English menus. Head upwards to eat -at least in the cities. Overall it was a great food experience.

peru

I thought my trip to peru was very organised. You are very well looked after. Lots of detailed information. The tour guides very happy to answer all questions. Would recommend exodus to friends. Very enjoyable.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking the inca-trail for me was the best. The views were mind blowing.

Thoughts on Group Leader

My group leader was fantastic and great fun to be with.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you take enough clothes on the inca trail as i did not expect it to rain so hard. And take a note book to write information as there was so much to learn about.

Vietnam Adventure

A complete tour of Vietnam from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, including Halong Bay , Hue, Hoian and a homestead stay in the Mekong Delta.

Most Inspirational Moment

The war museum in Ho Chi Minh city was a very moving experience. I had seen reports of the war when I was a teenager , to see it from the other side was a very humbling experience. The stay in the Mekong delta, seeing how the ordinary country people was fascinating. I came back not only having enjoyed a fabulous trip but changed spiritually, with a deep respect for such wonderful people. The art museum in Ho Chi Minh City is not on the itinerary however it is well worth spending a few hours there. The portrait of the effect of Agent Orange on new born children must rank alongside the Guernica by Picasso has one most moving anti-pictures I have ever seen.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Bien was excellent, very knowledgeable , attentive and good natured all the time

Advice for Potential Travellers

The tour is in low risk malaria zone, so I did not take any anti-malarials however I too plenty of insect repellent (50% deet)

Week in Jordan

Brilliant holiday. Comprehensive itinerary. Far more to see than anticipated.

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra - everyone should visit Petra once in their lifetime.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Efficient, effective & knowledgable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be aware it's a hectic holiday. If you enjoy a drink with your evening meal buy in duty free on way.

Finnish Wilderness Week

Exceeded my expectations – accommodation, food, staff, activities and facilities were all excellent.

Most Inspirational Moment

Ice-climbing and dog-sledding were two activities I've never tried before - both were exhilarating and great fun. The outdoor elk-stew dinner on the last night is also a good memory. It was very atmospheric, and it was a lovely evening with people I'd only just met, yet already felt like good friends.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Henri was very knowledgeable and competent, and I always felt safe during the activities led by him. He approached all situations with humour and patience!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Remember your swimming costume - sitting in the outdoor hot-tub with a cold beer with snow falling around you is a great way to end an active day :-)

Iceland Northern Lights

For a short exposure to the spectacular volcanic and glacial scenery of Iceland, and the opportunity dependent on conditions to see the Northern Lights, this Exodus trip takes some beating. As always, weather conditions will influence the experience, but sharing with a small but similarly interested group and a quality guide serve to enhance the enjoyment factor.

Most Inspirational Moment

Enjoying a crisp but clear evening away from all light pollution, therefore a spectacular night sky enhanced by the developing Northern Lights.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent. Flexible and attentive to the needs and comfort of group members, knowledgable and informative, and full of local folklore and amusing anecdotes to fill the quieter moments.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Follow Exodus advice on clothing because it is cold! Be ready for conditions not to be right for the Northern Lights, and if you do see them, expect them to be less colourful than most photographs suggest but be amazed by what the camera sees.

Coastal Croatia by Bike

Fantastic holiday. Arrangements, schedule and hotels were first class.

Most Inspirational Moment

Arriving in Fazana at night - could not believe we were staying in such a beautiful location

Thoughts on Group Leader

self guided

Advice for Potential Travellers

Book this holiday you will not be disappointed

Vietnam and Cambodia

The experiences on this trip will live on in our memories for many years. Future trips will be held up against this trip as a guide to a good holiday. Thom (our guide) was keen to show us the ‘real’ Vietnam. He took us to traditional eateries where the food was excellent. Lots of very healthy fruit and veg. In fact as a Scot I’ve never seen so many vegetables in my life! It’s changed my eating habits now I’m back home! Thom did his job very well and we loved every minute of our trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

Oh..so many moments. But was quite emotional as we sailed out onto Halong Bay. It was atmospheric with the low mist clinging to the islands and the sight of the sailboats drifting in and out of hidden bays. We loved Hoi An where we got to catch our breath and enjoyed taking a cookery class, and then eating our own cooking. Angkor Wat was why I booked the trip in the first place and it didn't disappoint. A special place, great to explore..although it would be great if you could find a quiet spot to appreciate it without all the other tourists. A couple of our travelling companions did visit at sunrise and thought that was a much quieter time to visit.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Thom was a star! He took us to fabulous eateries, always wanted us to experience Vietnamese cooking. His first lesson was teaching us to cross the busy roads of Hanoi without being hit by one of thousands of motorbikes. He counted us out and counted us back..phew, we all made it home in one piece. He was informative, enthusiastic and had a great sense of humour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

No need to take lots of clothes. Plenty things to buy over there! When haggling start at half the price but remember to keep smiling and keep things friendly. Beer prices - We found that beer was cheaper and you got more (bigger bottle) in the North so appreciate the bargain while you can. .. Oh, and don't try the snake rice wine, Yucko.

Inca Trail

the most amazing trip ever, such a lovely group of diverse people working together & helping each other along the trek. the weather started off a bit unusual due to a ‘El Niño’ that occurs every 2- 7 years & happened to be the year we visited! but the day we started our trek the sun shone & did not stop.

Most Inspirational Moment

this would be taking a step through the 'sun gate' on day 4 of our trek, as we climbed to this point in sweltering heat the suns rays shone through the gate, we waited until all group members were at the top before we took turns to walk through, the view was something i will remember for the rest of my life, absolutely amazing. the feeling of achievement , tiredness along with the most amazing views was very emotional and i am glad that our whole group achieved this together.

Thoughts on Group Leader

OUr group leader was excellent, he looked after us from start to finish, even coming out to dinner with us helping us to read through the menus & order, he ensured that as a group we bonded well before we even began our 4 day trek. His knowledge was unbelievable sharing this with us as we walked along & when we rested. to finish our trip our leader didnt just drop us off at the baggage check in , he waited with us & walked with us all to passport control where we said our emotional good byes to him :)

Advice for Potential Travellers

dont use deet, damages everything it touches! use incognito http://www.lessmosquito.com//online_shop_s/Incognito_Mosquito_Repellent_p/ic-sprayn.htm works great, doesn't smell & doesn't stain clothes or rot your glasses / phone or anything else it touches.

Picos de Europa

This was a fab getaway! Awesome scenery, really great walking, well organised and such a gorgeously rustic cosy lodge with really great food and hospitality…loved all of it 🙂

Most Inspirational Moment

There was an inspirational moment everyday of the week in the Picos mountains

Thoughts on Group Leader

Wow he made the week what it was....so knowledgeable, kind, funny and very experienced in the Picos mountain range. Totally went above and beyond to make the experience so memorable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Book it :) lovely week. I really wish I had improved my fitness before booking the C week though, found it pretty tough but I was possibly one of the least fit in the group! The guide always gave options on the treks so it worked really well to suit all group members.
