Ladakh Trekking Holidays

The mountain-wrapped regional capital is the first stop for most Ladakh trekking holidays and, therefore, a hub for adventurers. Upon arrival, you might be keen to explore the magnificent-yet-imposing Leh Palace or white-domed Shanti Stupa; however, with the city sitting at 3,500m above sea level, take the time to catch your breath and adjust to the altitude. A gentle stroll in the bazaar and plenty of water are essentials for day one. 

Navigate mountain roads that twist and turn up to the Khardung La, a pass often called the ‘highest motorable road in the world’. While others also lay claim to the title, the Khardung La is undoubtedly breath-taking and not just because it sits 5,359m above sea level. At the summit, you can stand among multi-coloured prayer flags and enjoy unforgettable views over Himalayan peaks and the Nubra Valley. 

Protected from the wider world by the Ladakh and Karakorum mountains, the Nubra Valley is remote and virtually untouched by Western influences. Here, rare double-humped Bactrian camels and traditional shepherd camps populate the wilderness, while elusive snow leopards stalk the landscapes virtually unseen. This idyllic setting is ideal for a hiking adventure, offering views over unnamed mountains, spots to wild camp and isolated monasteries and gompas to discover. 

Hemis National Park is home to Tibetan wolves, brown bears, lynx and wild dogs. But its most famous resident is also its most elusive: the snow leopard. Some 200 live here, but their camouflage makes them near impossible to spot without a guide taking you to the right areas. The highest mountain we summit on our Ladakh trekking holidays, Dzo Jongo East scrapes the clouds at 6,189m. Though not technically too challenging, the ascent is not for first timers – you need experience with an ice axe and crampons – while the 12 to 14-hour summit day begins at 1.30am. The reward for your hard work, however, is spectacular views from the top over the Zanskar and Karakorum mountains, plus plenty of high fives back at base camp.
