Our adventure starts at Hotel Le Renaie, our welcoming family-run hotel in the village of Pancole, just 4mi (6.5km) from the medieval town of San Gimignano.

Around 6pm, say ciao to your tour leader and fellow travellers, when we gather as a group to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead. Your tour leader then ensures a big welcome over a group dinner.

Please note: On selected dates, there may be two groups at Hotel Le Renaie. Our experienced tour leaders may therefore adjust the itinerary to ensure you enjoy each activity with your own small group.

If you wish to extend your adventure, consider booking pre-tour nights in Pisa or Florence. Speak to your sales representative for more information on our pre-tour accommodation and city extension packages.

  • Meals included:Dinner

We begin our exploration of Tuscany by visiting Colle Val d’Elsa, a medieval town well off the normal tourist track and, surprisingly, a world hub for crystal production. After an introduction to the town from our tour leader or a local guide, enjoy free time to stroll through the enchanting streets and explore the local crafts.

After lunch, we visit the renowned Majnoni Guicciardini Farm to explore organic vineyards and ancient cellars on a guided tour. Our visit includes a look around the family’s historic villa before we conclude our exploration with a tasting session in the garden or at the ancient olive mill.

Back at the hotel, you have the option to dine at the restaurant, which offers a delectable selection of dishes to complete the day’s experiences. Unwind further, perhaps, with a game of billiards or another glass of local wine on the garden-view terrace.

  • Meals included:Breakfast

After breakfast, we head to Certaldo station and catch a train to Siena (approximately 45 minutes). This medieval city is dominated by impressive gothic monuments and is divided into 17 contrade (districts), each of which goes head-to-head in the twice-annual Palio, a thunderous horse race around the central square for which the whole city turns out.

We join a local guide on a tailor-made tour of the city, stopping at the landmarks, plus captivating sites most tourists normally pass by. Our tour includes a visit to a contrada museum, which is typically closed to the public, and dips into botteghe (small, traditional shops) to sample traditional local sweets.

You may also opt to visit the medieval Siena Cathedral (not included). Advance booking is required and available at www.operalaboratori.vivaticket.it/en/tour/complesso-monumentale-del-duomo-di-siena/2589. We recommend a timeslot between 2pm and 3.30pm.

  • Meals included:Breakfast

This morning, we drive for approximately one hour along the Chiantigiana, a picturesque route that winds through Chianti vineyards and olive groves. Our destination is Castellina in Chianti, one of the original Chianti Classico villages. Enjoy free time to wander, explore the medieval streets and, perhaps, enjoy an optional wine-tasting experience (payable locally).

In the afternoon, we join hands-on cooking class at a locally owned wine estate. Getting into the role with aprons and hats, we master pasta and sauce making, while the menu also features local wine to enhance the culinary journey.

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Dinner

Today is free to enjoy Tuscany at your own pace. If you feel like relaxing, simply stay at the albergo and enjoy the hospitality of our hosts, taking dips in the pool. Alternatively, head to the nearby hilltop town of San Gimignano, which is wrapped in 13th-century walls and has a cityscape punctuated by medieval towers. If you’d prefer something else, your leader can advise on local chianti wine-tasting tours, e-bike and Vespa hire, or offer assistance for unguided walks or daytrips.

  • Meals included:Breakfast

Our destination today is Florence, the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. We reach Florence from Certaldo by train, approximately a one-hour journey. A local guide meets us upon arrival, leading a one-hour exploration of the city, delving into the captivating tradition of the ancient wine windows (buchette del vino). Strategically placed on the walls of city palaces, they were introduced to sell wine without opening a shop, allowing the vendors to avoid paying tax. Though centuries old, many are in use, their popularity increasing after years of being ignored, even by the people of Florence. At the end of the tour, you can purchase a glass of wine to toast our Florence adventure.

The rest of the day is free for you to explore the cultural and architectural treasures of the city at your own pace. You might consider a visit to the Uffizi, an art gallery housing masterpieces by Renaissance artists, including Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus and Caravaggio’s evocative Medusa. Today concludes with a traditional Italian pizza night at our hotel.

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Dinner

A 45-minute drive takes us to Volterra: perched on a hill, it is wonderfully picturesque with medieval ramparts, Etruscan roots, and panoramic views of the countryside. Take the opportunity to visit landmarks such as the first-century BCE Roman theatre or the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Alternatively, wander through the streets, discovering artisan workshops – the town is well-known for producing handmade alabaster objects.

In the afternoon, we return to Pancole and visit the family-run Cesani estate. Nestled in the scenic countryside, it produces some of the finest wines in Tuscany. Our visit includes an expertly led tasting, in which we savour three glasses of their exquisite wines paired with bruschetta, extra-virgin olive oil, and a selection of Tuscan cheeses and charcuterie. It’s a sensory journey that not only showcases the estate’s craft but also provides a taste of the distinctive flavors and traditions that define this captivating corner of Tuscany.

It’s then back to our albergo for a farewell dinner, a chance to relax with new-found friends and reminisce about the adventures we’ve shared together.

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Dinner

The trip ends after breakfast. Bid Hotel Le Renaie a fond farewell and begin your return journey home. Alternatively, if you’d like more time to explore Italy, speak to your sales representative about extending your stay.

Essential Information

This trip is graded Activity Level 1 (Easy). For more information on our trip gradings please visit our Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us.

None of the activities are particularly taxing. However, Tuscany can be very hot in summer, especially from June to August, but heatwaves can also happen in April and May. Temperatures can reach the high 30Cs (around 100F).

Key information

Start hotel: Hotel Le Renaie, Località Pancole, 53037 San Gimignano (SI)
Phone: +39 0577 1607452
Recommended arrival time: You can arrive at any time today. There is a welcome briefing around 6pm in the evening.
Airport: Pisa (PSA)

Discover Tuscany: Culture, Food & Wine

Getting to the start hotel

The start hotel is approximately 1hr 20min drive from the airport. Your options for this journey are:

Take an Exodus transfer
Exodus provides one group arrival transfer from the airport, which is timed to coincide with the arrival of a chosen flight from London, UK. You may join this transfer at no extra cost, provided you can be at the airport before the transfer leaves. Speak to your sales representative for the group arrival transfer times or to arrange a private transfer.

The usual meeting point for the group transfer is Pisa Airport, where the guide will be waiting for you. Occasionally, unpredictable parking restrictions at the airport mean the group transfer includes a five-minute journey on the Pisamover from the airport to the railway station. In this case, the guide will still meet you at the airport on arrival and accompany you on the Pisamover.

Make your own way
It’s possible to reach the start hotel by public transport, but the journey is complicated. We therefore recommend joining the group transfer where possible. If not, you can pre-order a taxi through Exodus. This will take you from Pisa Airport directly to Hotel Le Renaie. It will take approximately 1hr 20min to reach the accommodation and costs approximately €200, paid locally.

If you would like further information on joining this trip, please speak to your sales representative.

Catching your return flight

There’s a group departure transfer to the airport for customers who Exodus booked onto a chosen flight to London, UK. Please speak to your sales representative if you wish to join. If the group departure transfer does not suit your flight time, speak to your sales representative to arrange an alternative transfer.

Note on the group flights
The return flight can sometimes be late in the evening, especially during summer. In this instance, you have additional time to spend in Pisa. The leader takes care of all arrangements in terms of transport from/to the airport and the city centre and luggage storage. It may also happen that, for logistical reasons, we have to be at the airport earlier than normally scheduled on return. This means a longer waiting time before checking in.

Italy

Travellers from the UK, US and EU normally do not need a visa to enter Italy. Please note, visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.

Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.

• Australia: www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/europe/italy
• Canada: www.travel.gc.ca/destinations/italy
• United Kingdom: www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/italy/entry-requirements
• USA:  www.travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Italy.html

Please note: it is compulsory to carry ID with you at all times in Italy.

Your package includes all breakfasts, four dinners and two wine tastings. Breakfast is typically a continental buffet.

Two of your included dinners are at Hotel Le Renaie and consist of three courses with dessert and a glass of wine. On Thursday, enjoy a special pizza feast at the hotel.

All meals are homemade, crafted with locally sourced ingredients, and follow traditional Tuscan recipes. For this reason, the menu doesn’t include fish-based options.

Dietary preferences, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free options, can be accommodated – please inform us of any dietary requirements when booking.

April and May are warm; rain is possible, but it seldom lasts long. Nights may be cool. We strongly recommend a fleece-lined jacket or warm sweater in these months.

June is the start of summer and July and August can become quite hot by mid-afternoon, so this time is kept free for lunch. Although rain is unusual, torrential cloudbursts are not unknown.

September and October are cooler and wetter, yet visibility is often better. Swimming is usually still possible at this time.

As a certified B Corp, we’re on a mission to improve our social and environmental impact across all our adventures.

We do this through our innovative Thriving Nature, Thriving People plan.

This ‘nature positive’ approach is designed to help nature and communities thrive in harmony through practical solutions, such as reducing carbon and waste on our trips, supporting conservation projects through the Exodus Adventure Travels Foundation, and rewilding 100 square metres for every Exodus traveller.

A Perfect Blend of Culture, Cuisine & Countryside!

This tour was an amazing way to experience the heart of Tuscany. The itinerary was perfectly balanced with cultural visits, delicious food and wine experiences, and plenty of free time to explore or relax. Some highlights for me were the guided tour of Siena, where we tasted incredible pastries made...

Most Inspirational Moment

Standing on the hilltop in Volterra, overlooking the endless Tuscan countryside, was incredibly inspiring. The blend of ancient history, peaceful streets, and breathtaking scenery made me pause and truly appreciate the beauty and depth of the region. But to be honest, every single day offered its own “most inspiring moment” — Tuscany has a way of surprising you at every turn.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our tour leader was outstanding—knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely passionate about Tuscany and Italy. She made every part of the trip smooth and enjoyable, offering help whenever needed, sharing tips and engaging stories, and even giving us a thoughtful personalized gift at the end. Her warmth and enthusiasm created a friendly, welcoming atmosphere for the whole group, making the experience truly fantastic!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack comfortable shoes for walking through cobblestone streets and rolling hills, and be ready to savor every moment—Tuscany is best explored slowly. Don’t hesitate to try local wines, cheeses, and pastries wherever you go, and take advantage of the free days to wander charming towns, soak in the scenery, or follow your own curiosity. Bring an open mind, a sense of adventure, and your camera—every corner is picture-perfect!

Beautiful Tuscany

A great trip visiting a lot of beautiful Towns with informative tour guides, also providing free time to explore. The wine tasting at Majnoni Guicciardini was a fantastic setting, informative and picturesque. The trip to Siena and hearing all about The Palio was inspiring and our tour guide in Florence...

Most Inspirational Moment

Hearing about The Palio, this history and traditions and spending time in Siena. The other towns we visited like San Gimignano and Volterra were great experiences too.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alejandro was exceptional! He looked after the group really well. Informative and knowledgeable, he injected warmth and humour and mixed well with the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

As in the other review, insect repellent is a must!

Partners in Wine

Title taken from our Group Whatsapp - which was just part of the story. Had high hopes for this holiday and they were fully met. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would recommend this holiday to those seeking a real Tuscan experience.

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to pick out one when we visited many inspiring places. However, our 2 favourites were: 1. After a very interesting wine tour with Cesar, we then had a guided tour of the family mansion before we sat down to enjoy his wines and an ample spread in the Olive Press room. It was a fabulous experience despite getting bitten in the Vineyard. Please take insect repellent and after bite cream. 2. Gill my partner, particularly enjoyed sitting outside and surveying the Tuscan landscape whilst the sun set and we were eating the pasta which we had made.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alejandro is a very experienced guide who is able to take everything in his stride. He was conscientious, knowledgeable and sociable. Always helpful and was there for us. Liked him a lot!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Already stressed above, please pack your insect repellent and after bite cream. The mozzies, flies etc are viscous. May have just been the time of year. You do get value for your money but your holiday can be pretty full on with tours and social events. On the day off, we did appreciate relaxing around the pool before we went to San G. later on in the afternoon. Do it and go!

ADC Discover Tuscany: Culture, Food & Wine

A fantastic trip - a great variety of winemakers and local artisans visited, with some really interesting historical sites visited too.

Most Inspirational Moment

Learning all about Sienna's rich history - the Contradas, and who could forget the Palio di Siena!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Teresa was absolutely brilliant - very accommodating and sensitive to the groups needs, as well as being very knowledgeable about the area. No ask was too big!

Advice for Potential Travellers

The accommodation used for this trip is relatively remote. If you're thinking of extending your stay be sure to check out Florence!

Culture, food, wine all delivered in style - great trip - left you wanting more.

This was an excellent trip. Delivered everything it says in trip name. Visited fabulous locations, learnt interesting facts about each place, tried local food and wine. Magnificent.

Most Inspirational Moment

So many to choose from - Learning about the contrada’s in Sienna - First vineyard walk and wine/ food tasting - the passion of the guide and his knowledge was great, only surpassed by the combination of his choice of ricotta (local farm produce) served with his olive oil, salt, pepper and his wine - sublime. Visit to Voltare. I could go on! The Spa trip, on the “down” day was brilliant, great place to relax.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Teresa, was everything you would want. A native - she could handle anything, dealt with issues well, was accommodating to my limitations. We had a relatively small group, 2 family groups, with a range of ages, but she managed to ensure we all enjoyed every day. Fabulous. On our “down” she arranged a spa day for us, where she took recommendations from local staff. It was brilliant.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I did more walking than I expected - we did between 10k and 15k steps on the guided tour days. Not a massive amount, but for some, with mobility issues, on the cobblestones, I found it tiring.
