Overview

Explore the wild hiking trails of Europe’s best-kept secret

Remote, wild, untapped by mass tourism, Bosnia & Herzegovina is only just attracting the attention of the hiking community. Those lucky few who visit, however, return with tales of an untouched paradise, practically unheard of in Europe. This walking trip includes the essentials: ascending Maglić, the highest mountain in Bosnia; hiking a section of the Via Dinarica, which our local team played a key role in creating and developing; and exploring Sutjeska National Park. There’s plenty of cultural intrigue too, with sightseeing in the history-soaked cities of Sarajevo, Mostar, and Dubrovnik in Croatia.

In the morning, we transfer (approximately 1hr 30min) to Sutjeska National Park. Before we reach our hotel in the Tjentiste Valley, we hike from Papin Do Hut to Jagodino Lake. From the lake, we continue over open mountainous terrain to the summit of Kuk (5,960ft/1,817m), right on the border with Montenegro, for panoramic views of the Zelengora mountain and the rockface wall of Volujak.

We descend partially the same way down, a bit more than an hour, with the Lebrsnik and Volujak slopes as constant companions on the horizon. After the lunch break close to the hut, we take a transfer to the Park Valley, through the Sutjeska River canyon, down to the hotel for a well-deserved dinner (approximately 30 minutes).  In the afternoon, before dinner, we take a 10 to 15-minute stroll from the hotel to visit the Partisan Memorial of Sutjeska. This giant, angular sculpture pays tribute to the thousands of Partisan soldiers who died during the Battle of Sutjeska in the Second World War.

Walking in Bosnia & Herzegovina

Today is particularly special as we transfer to Lokva Derneciste (approximately one hour) and join the Via Dinarica, a 1,245mi (2,000km) long hiking route connecting all six republics of the former Yugoslavia. Our local team played a key role in bringing it to existence, including mapping ideal routes for sections of the trail and assisting local NGOs with securing funding, and it has since been named one of the best hiking trails in Europe by National Geographic.

Our route takes us to the summit of Maglić, the highest mountain in Bosnia at (7,835ft/2,388m), a challenging ascent, which includes steep, rocky sections with fixed cables. This is, by far, the most demanding part of today’s trek but each step takes us further above the surrounding peaks until we reach the top.

The summit provides an ideal spot for our picnic lunch with stretching views over Montenegro and the emerald-green waters of Trnovacko Lake, our next stop. After descending to the waters in the afternoon, we head for Prijevor where we meet our transfer to our hotel (approximately 50 minutes).

We transfer to the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo (approximately two hours), at the heart of the Balkan Peninsula. On arrival, we take a tour of the major historic, cultural and war sites in the city, helping us to piece together its complex and intriguing past. The afternoon is then free to explore this varied and beautiful capital city.

Accommodation: Hotel Diamond Rain (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Dinner

Today we explore Trebevic, another Olympic mountain and a great area so close to city hustle and bustle and yet so far away from daily life in Sarajevo. We take the back road to Jahorina via Vraca to Brus, where after a 20-minute drive we park our vehicle and start our 650-meter ascent to the peak of Trebević (5,344ft/1,629m).

Our walk takes us along a long and winding mountain trail. Although we will be hiking partially through pine and spruce-covered forests, enjoying the complete silence, you will be treated occasionally to beautiful views of Sarajevo below us and the mountains we visit the day after. We arrive at the top where you will stand and see Sarajevo, as you had no chance before. Having been soaked in the sights we descend via an alternative, somewhat shorter trail down the western ridge. We will make a break and celebration drink at one of the local mountain huts nearby with magnificent views. We end the day with a visit to the concrete remains of the Sarajevo Olympic bobsled track, today fully covered with graffiti of local artists. We then have a short transfer back to Sarajevo (approximately 15 to 20 minutes).

Walking in Bosnia & Herzegovina

Today we take a transfer in the morning (approximately one hour) and have a full-day walk in the Bjelasnica Mountains, home of the 1984 Winter Olympics, ascending Obalj peak (6,220ft/1,896m) and visiting Lukomir, the highest village in Bosnia & Herzegovina at 4,820ft (1,469m).

From the traditional Bosnian Mosque in the village of Umoljani, we walk to Gradina, a village used for centuries as a base for summer pastures. From here, we start ascending toward Obalj ridge and slowly we rise above Studeni potok (Studeni stream) with views opening in front of us. With mountains to the south, Treskavica and Visocica offer us fantastic scenes. Once we reach the slopes of Obalj, we slowly continue to the summit. From here, we see Lukomir village below, home to ancient stecci (medieval tombstones), and where villagers still follow a traditional agricultural life. On the edge of the village, there is a fabulous view of Rakitnica canyon, Obalj and Visocica. After a simple but tasty homemade late lunch, we transfer back to the hotel in Sarajevo (approximately 1hr 30min).

Hike the King’s Hunting Trail on Čvrsnica Mountain, following a route once used by King Karadjordjević. After a 1hr 30min transfer, begin our hike in the Diva Grabovica Valley, climbing through beech forest and passing several natural springs where we can refill our bottles with fresh mountain water.

After around two hours, we reach the Zlijeb viewpoint, which provides wide views over the valley and Čvrsnica’s distinctive limestone cliffs – including the largest rock face in the Balkans, rising more than 3,000ft (1,000m). We then take a transfer to Mostar, where we settle into our hotel.

Alternatively, if you’d prefer to skip the hike, you can opt to raft on the Neretva River instead – an activity arranged through your tour leader.

Accommodation: Hotel Kapetanovina (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch

We spend the morning exploring Mostar, including a visit to the Old Bridge, which was rebuilt after it collapsed during the conflict of the early 1990s. This city on the Neretva River was regularly in the news during this period and we can still see the scars of war. These days, however, Mostar is once again a warm and bustling place with a fascinating history and architecture.

We leave the city in the afternoon and head for Dubrovnik, Croatia, our final destination and a great way to end a week of trekking. The transfer takes approximately 2hr 30min. On arrival at around 5pm, we have free time to explore. The perfectly preserved old town is a Unesco World Heritage site with fortresses, palaces and city walls to admire.

Accommodation: Hotel Komodor/Hotel Adria (or similar)

All breakfasts, five picnic lunches and four dinners are included on this trip.

Typical meals:

  • Breakfast across the Balkans usually consists of bread and pastries, dairy products such as yoghurt and cheese, cereal, eggs cooked in a variety of ways, smoked meats, honey, tea and coffee, milk and juices.
  • Breakfast in Sutjeska will be a choice of a warm or cold set meal. In Sarajevo, Mostar and Dubrovnik there will be a choice between a hot and cold buffet.
  • Lunches will be picnics including bread, cheese, sausage, meat and vegetarian pâté, salad, chocolate bars, cookies, trail mix, and coffee/tea.
  • Evening meals in Sutjeska are three courses and include soup, a selection of traditionally prepared meat, vegetables, and a dessert.

Typical Bosnian cuisine consists of ingredients such as tomatoes, potatoes, onions, garlic, peppers, cucumbers, mushrooms, spinach, courgette, beans and dairy products such as milk, cheese, pavlaka (sour cream) and kajmak (similar to clotted cream). Meat dishes usually consist of beef and lamb and specialities include cevapi, burek, dolma (stuffed vegetables with meat) and goulash. Desserts often have an Eastern influence with baklava being very popular. The alcoholic drink rakija, made from apples or plums, is also common in this region.

Croatian and Montenegrin cuisine both share similarities to Bosnian cuisine but are also heavily influenced by Greek and Italian food.

Vegetarian and special dietary requirements can be catered for, but options are limited throughout Bosnia & Herzegovina – please inform your sales representative of any specific requirements upon booking.

Bosnia & Herzegovina enjoys a similar climate to most of central Europe: hot summers, cool springs and autumns, and cold winters with considerable snowfall. We visit from June to September when temperatures will be generally warm (25C-30C/77F-86F), but these temperatures will be a little lower in the mountains. Rain can fall at any time of the year, although in midsummer it is more likely to come as short, sharp thunderstorms. Walking on Maglić and Volujak can be unpredictable and it has been known to hail in August.

As a certified B Corp, we’re on a mission to improve our social and environmental impact across all our adventures.

We do this through our innovative Thriving Nature, Thriving People plan.

This ‘nature positive’ approach is designed to help nature and communities thrive in harmony through practical solutions, such as reducing carbon and waste on our trips, supporting conservation projects through the Exodus Adventure Travels Foundation, and rewilding 100 square metres for every Exodus traveller.

Maglic Magic !!!

A wonderful weeks hiking in the most beautiful surroundings. Sarajevo was an interesting base for some of the walks and the time spent in Mostar was lovely ...despite the heavy rain!! It was a pleasure to meet all the other group members, good conversation and fun the whole week. Two...

Most Inspirational Moment

The day hiking Mt Maglic, perfect weather conditions, enjoyed every step even though it was a long day.....and the views were stunning! A real sense of achievement had by all the group.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Saudin was an inspirational young man ....only 25 but so advanced beyond his years. He was a font of all knowledge on the trip, socialable, fun and took excellent care of the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do not be put off by the scrambling part of the Mt Maglic hike, or having to use wires - they are not always necessary! It is along day, but many senior members in the group absolutely nailed it !! ......and do take the last few steps to the summit from the saddle ...there is an option of a lesser exposed route up and down ....100% worth the effort!!

A pleasant and informative experience

This was an enjoyable trip. Nothing spectacular, but consistently pleasurable and interesting. Learning about the Bosnia's past and current conditions from our guide, Boris, who lived through the Bosnian War, was fascinating. The landscapes of Bosnia were also appealing, especially that of Sutjeska National Park. Further, the lodgings were more...

Most Inspirational Moment

I cannot think of a moment that I would call inspiring.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Boris, our group leader, was outstanding. He really made the trip. A Bosnian Serb and a journalist, he had extensive knowledge of the country's complex history which he related with clarity, candor and a nice sense of humor (in flawless English).

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you haven't been to Dubrovnik before, you might think about scheduling an extra day there before or after the planned itinerary. The city is well worth a full day's visit.

What an Amazing Trip!

The title says it all! A well-paced journey through one of Europe's hidden gems. A great mix of moderate and challenging treks through truly breathtaking scenery.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the top of Maglic, the highest mountain in Bosnia. It is a challenging trek, with sections of scrambling and cables, which made reaching the top even more special.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Saudin was incredible. He had such passion for everything Bosnia, and was always on hand to fix any issues, although there were hardly any. He was great at managing the levels of the group and making sure everyone was included. Our second leader, Fatima, was the same and displayed all the features of a great Exodus leader. Our group's driver was also fantastic, with some of the transfers having to navigate tricky mountain roads.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Walking poles are definitely needed to help with some of the ascents, particularly Maglic. The day the group summits Maglic is very long and tiring, so be prepared!

Would happily go back!

This was an absolutely perfect trip for me (55) and my daughter (24). The walking was a good mix of moderate to a bit more arduous. The chance to visit Trebinje, Sarajevo, Mostar, Dubrovnik was nicely interspersed with the walks in quiet and fantastic scenery.... Alpine meadows with butterflies everywhere...

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the summit of Maglic, which was never guaranteed due to threat of stormy windy weather. And Sarajevo is lovely.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Saudin Gak is an exceptional leader. He was competent, thoughtful, considerate and fun throughout. His time-keeping, local knowledge and contingency planning were great, ably assisted by Fatima and Munever.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take walking poles. 3 litres of water needed for longer walks in hot weather. Long trousers might be required for the Maglic walk. There are some sections of scrambling on Maglic, with via ferrara. The height of Maglic is 7,828 feet (not 9,304 feet as described in itinerary). Tap water is all drinkable. Bosnian Convertible Marks can be obtained from cashpoints in Trebinje , a 2 minute walk from hotel. Euros not needed till Dubrovnik (a lot more expensive).

Hiking to Maglic

Great trip with a great group and two local guides who did their upmost to make the trip interesting safe and enjoyable.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to the top of Maglic!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sebina and Fatima who was training were supportive and very helpful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Give it a go. The area is stunning and there is a lot of history and past tragedy to learn about. Locals are friendly and food was exactly what I would want to eat for hiking. Good to sample local dishes and wine!

Mixed Experience

Overall this was a good trip. The walks were well led and the historical aspect interesting

Most Inspirational Moment

The hike to Maglic Mountain and the guided tour of Mostar

Thoughts on Group Leader

Saudin was a really wonderful leader. He was attentive to the needs of the group and everyone warmed to him. He managed a very mixed ability very well and was very safety conscious. I would highly recommend Saudin as a leader.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The hotels in this area do not always meet the standards of European hotels, however once you can accept this then they are fine for a night or two.

Suggestions

A major problem with this was the non-compatibility of the hiking levels of the group. This holiday was a level 4 as per Exodus advertised levels. The group fitness and hiking ability ranged from 1 to 5. This created great difficulties for the leader, and group members. The leader, through necessity and for safety had to adjust many of the walks to cater for the least fittest and able walkers. A number of the weaker walkers opted out of several walks whilst stronger walkers self navigated walks in order to have a satisfying day on the mountain. There seemed to have been little or no effort on behalf of Exodus to ascertain if group members were up to the advertised level for the holiday. The general consensus was that it was a matter of "bums on seats" rather than any serious attempt to match hiking abilities on the holiday.

Reply from Exodus

We would like to thank David for his review and are very glad to hear that he was happy with his Exodus trip to Bosnia overall; however, we were sorry to read that he felt this was let down by the service he received following a flight delay on his return journey. In the event of flight delays or cancellations, it is the airline’s responsibility to inform customers directly of the disruption to their flights and to provide information, a new flight if necessary, and accommodation and food/drink should this too be required. We understand that the airline held David’s ticket for his delayed flight and so there wasn’t a need for Exodus to become involved; we would note, however, that should airlines fail to fulfil their obligations Exodus are always prepared to step in and ensure that our customers are able to catch a flight to their destination in a timely manner. We are happy that, on this occasion, David was able to take his scheduled flight home, but are sorry for the delay he faced and any stress this caused. We have been in direct contact with David and have assured him that our out of hours service are fully able to access customer records, and we are confident they were able to do so in this instance; however, they are not able to access the customer records held by the airlines we use to provide more comprehensive updates than those given by the airline to passengers on the ground. We have also outlined to David how our out of hours team are able to directly contact senior members of Exodus staff as part of our emergency management process, which we feel is an appropriate and efficient way to ensure that any emergencies are identified and handled with urgency. - Vivien Urban, Exodus Product Manager

Fantastic

A trip walking in the Bosnian mountains, climbing mount maglic. Should call it magic as the scenery was absolutely stunning. Food was good, try the Bosnian pie!

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to the top of Maglic.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Kenan and Sead were a suite stats. Kind funny and caring. Not only did they guide us but was so informative and passionate about their country. Two of the best guides I’ve had and I’ve been on quite a few treks.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Suggestions

On the top of the trekking there is also some sightseeing notably in Sarajevo.
