Land of the Tiger

I think that we were very lucky to have 12 Tiger sightings, this exceeded our expectations, other groups may not be as fortunate. India has an abundance of other wildlife and so many birds, the 3 game parks we visited were all totally different landscapes, the countryside was surprisingly green. The entire tour was brilliant, the group got along very well together and added to the sucess of the trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

The close encounters with Tigers, and the Taj Mahal at sunset

Thoughts on Group Leader

Krishna was an exceptional group leader from start to finish, he went beyond the call of duty to obtain 2 extra game drives for the group, and he quickly sorted any minor problems that the group had on the journey. He was very knowledgeable and his passionate enthusiasm was infectious. We would like to thank Krishna for making our magnificent adventure even more special. He is a great asset to the Exodus team.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You need to be patient when looking for Tigers, you can spend 30 minutes or more listening to warning calls and just hoping that elusive Tiger will appear.

Run out of Superlatives - Fantastic - what else can I say!

This was the first time we’ve been on an Adventure holiday and the first time that we’ve ever used Exodus. Superb communication and assistance from Exodus HQ throughout, from booking to arriving home. The customer service and assistance we’ve received from this company is genuinely the best I’ve ever experienced, even when flights home went slightly awry due to bad weather!

The trip itself exceeded all our expectations – by a long way! As first-time ‘Adventure Travelers’, we were a little apprehensive about what we might have signed up to, but the user reviews on the website and the patience of Harriet at Exodus in answering some rather inane questions quickly put these to rest. Don’t just think about it, do it, you won’t regret it!

Yes, you could fly to Cusco and get the train up to Machu Picchu, but you won’t truly appreciate this amazing place unless you’ve walked the trail and understand just how remote it would have been back in the day together with why the Incas thought of it a such a special place. You would also miss out on many other stunning ruins that cannot be reached any other way, incredible wildlife, the physical challenge and the chance to be humbled by the amazingly quiet, resilient and proud Quechua people, many of whom make up the porters and crew that care for you on your trip and make your dreams come true.

Machu Picchu is a very special place, Cusco is charming and the Peruvian countryside stunning, but the most precious thing that my wife and I have taken away from our trip is a sense of profound respect and fondness for the Peruvian people and the Quechua in particular.

Most Inspirational Moment

Where do I start! The Sacred Valley, surrounded by mountains, glaciers and filled by awe inspiring citadels like Pisac and Ollantaytambo, take your breath away. Making it to the top of 'Dead Woman's Pass' was really quite emotional for all our party, a personal challenge for all of us to some degree, but one that everyone in our diverse group accomplished! The remote, peaceful and beautiful Inca ruins of Wiñay Wayna captivated me personally in a way that even Maccu Picchu failed to do, giving me a peaceful almost spiritual feeling that I just can't describe. Finally, arriving at the 'Sun Gate' at the entrance to Maccu Picchu itself to be greeted by a stunning view of . . . cloud! This magically parted after a few minutes and revealed the 'classic view' of the citadel bathed in a shaft of golden sunlight!

Thoughts on Group Leader

A good guide could make or break an expedition and Artoru was a fantastic guide. Knowledgeable, calm and funny, with a quite confidence born out of years of training and experience. He kept his 'family' together in all senses of the word from beginning to end and was capable of conversing comfortably on all levels about a wide variety of subjects with the whole group. Equally, he had the knack of knowing when just to lead and let others follow at their own pace and admire the scenery. Marcia, was his able assistant and was quickly taken to heart by the whole group. Her quiet, happy, unassuming nature and knowledge of the history and culture of her 'ancestors' made her a perfect accompaniment to Artoru. She was equally capable of either leading the stronger ones in the group or providing a stoic support to those that struggled a little more at the back. Both guides, coming from the indiginous Quechua people of the Sacred Valley region, were uniquely able to give you some insight into both the history and modern daily lives and outlooks of these wonderful people.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You don't have to be 'super fit', but the fitter you are, the more likely you are to enjoy the trek. My wife and I are what I would call 'reasonably active' but by no means joggers or athletes and found the trek if anything less difficult than we might have feared. We swim 30 lengths non-stop once a week, go for long walks with our dog at weekends and that's about it! We reckon that if you're reasonably active, have some camping experience then you'll be fine if you pace yourself. If you're a couch potato, then this is NOT the trip for you! Mountain Sickness is a weird thing! All of our group experience some symptoms to varying degrees at some point, except one seasoned, experienced guy. Most just suffered slight breathlessness and a pounding heart occasionally for the first day or so and occasionally intermittently after that, whereas others REALLY suffered! Migraines, vomiting and severe shortness of breath were the worst that was suffered three of the group going up/down 'Dead Woman's Pass', though nobody required the oxygen that Artoru was carrying and all of them made it to the top, with a little help and encouragement from their friends! Take your own loo roll and keep it in a waterproof bag. Paper is provided in each toilet tent, but it can get a bit 'soggy' in the damp conditions you may experience! US Dollars are widely accepted in the cities like Cusco or can be changed easily enough, but Peruvian Neuvo Sols are the preferred and easiest currency to use once there. There are plenty of ATMs around and we didn't have any difficulty using UK cards in them. If you're flying via Sao Paulo in Brazil, beware that they do not take US Dollars or PNS in the airport, you'll need to use your card!

Fantastic week in Petra

We visited all the important places including 2 whole days in Petra. Donkeys and camels provided transport when vehicles were unsuitable! Balance of historic locations, wonderful scenery, chances to relax and opportunities for enjoying good food was just right. Hotels/camp were all of a very good standard – safe clean and comfortable. Group size was 18 and I would suggest that is a maximum for a group to be.

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra, Jerash, Mount Nebo, Wadi Rum and probably others I have temporarily forgotten, vie for top place in this category. From another perspective, the people of Jordan and a delight, joy and inspiration. They were very friendly and helpful and added to a feeling of safety in their country.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very knowledgeable, friendly and professional. He went out of his way to keep us all safe and happy and aware of what was happening. He also had a wonderful range of very entertaining stories and a great delivery style.

Vietnam 2015: chopsticks & coconuts

Loved vietnam from top to bottom. The trip was well paced and included so many activities, sightseeing, bicycle rides, boat trips, Cookery class, shows to name a few in a space of 2 weeks. Quan our guide was very friendly, helpful, informative and was well organised in all aspects of the trip. It was a country that provide a multi sensory experience. Our girls made friends for life and loved the trip as much as we did.

Most Inspirational Moment

We loved the hustle and bustle of the city of Hanoi. We could sit by a bar and be fascinated watching the hundreds of motorbikes and cyclists rushing by loaded with families, crates of animals, mattresses, furniture and all sorts!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Really friendly, informative, well organised and great with children.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Definately book to see the A O Show in Saigon, it's awesome!!

Atlas Panorama

The Atlas Panorama was a fantastic walking holiday – we went as a family of 5 aged 16 upwards and all enjoyed the experience. It is a good combination between a bit of city life and then remote and simple village life. The Gite is basic but was very clean and the food was delicious – also beautiful views. The picnics provided by the cooks were delicious. We thought it was a good balance of walking on each day and the guide was excellent.

Most Inspirational Moment

The fact that we all made it on the long trek, had a wonderful picnic and enjoyed the day.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Hassan is very helpful, considerate and friendly. He is quite quiet but certainly knows what is going on in the group and was able to work out everyone's abilities very quickly. He made sure that everyone in the group was able to complete the walks. It was very interesting to talk to him about local life in Morocco.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Although we thought the Gite was very clean and comfortable, don't go on this holiday if you don't want to share a dorm, sleep on a mattress and need to be connected to the internet to survive. We took 3 season sleeping bags but in fact we were hot (April), there are blankets and pillows in the Gite. Take blister plasters, just in case!

Colours of Rajasthan

This was our first visit to India and it couldn’t have gone better. The sights, smells and colours of Rajasthan will live long in the memory. we travelled long hours on the coach but this only added to the experience as there is so much to see while on the road. We had plenty of stops along the way to visit the forts and palaces that adorn this area.

Most Inspirational Moment

The highlight for me was to see the tigeress in the wild with her cubs. whilst on our tiger drive. And of course the Taj Mahal. we had to get up early and I can now boast my wife and I on the day we visited were the first through the gates! and all of the group had great uninterrupted photos taken of the Taj Mahal

Thoughts on Group Leader

we had a tremendous leader in Chandra. if you are lucky enough to have Chandra on your next trip you are in for a treat. His love for his country and his depth of knowledge is astounding. a great sense of humour and compassion for us inexperienced travellers. he had the ability to stand at the front of the coach and give a talk on any Indian related subject we put to him.. which was often funny and always interesting. we visited many forts and palaces and Chandra's knowledge of each one was superb. Chandra was possibly the highlight of the whole trip

Advice for Potential Travellers

we visited many temples forts and palaces I would recommend a diary or journal to remember some of the highlights

Finnish Wilderness Week

This was one of the most exhilarating holidays I’ve been on for a long time. I only booked at the last minute which was fine because everything you need is supplied and it just means packing a few changes of clothes for the evening. Oulanka Base Camp is very cosy with really lovely staff who looked after us well – the food was exceptional and all made from fresh. The itinerary lets you try all the activities and then do them with more challenge if you want to. I opted for the additional day-long husky driving and it was wonderful to be travelling through spectacular scenery pulled by these extraordinary dogs – absolutely wonderful!

Most Inspirational Moment

Definitely the long husky driving trip. My team was raring to go all the time and sweeping down the tracks at speed was so exciting - a real adrenalin rush! I would definitely do this again.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Everyone was just so helpful and kind - a really lovely group of people.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go for it! Trust the leaders and try everything because you do get better at the activities.

AXW

A brilliant week, full of new experiences, Plenty of history, the many different settlers amazed us.

Most Inspirational Moment

The extra day in Petra climbing on the top and looking down. And the desert experience in the Bedouin camp.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our Guide, Zuhair, was brilliant. He had good knowledge, good English, and was full of extra information. He gave us an all-round experience on top of the trip details.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Clothing - layers, layers, layers. It can be cold at night in the desert. Hot in Aqaba. Also it does rain occasionally, so a thin mac over a fleece is useful. Sunglasses and sun-tan lotion. There can be mosquitos in the south but no malaria. You definitely need some sort of footwear to go in the Dead Sea, the sea bed is very rough. Jelly shoes would be ideal. (Flip-flops tend to float away!) The temperature variation between north and south is quite large. You'll need to carry food and water, so a small rucksack essential. Don't forget your camera!!

Cycle Cuba

Absolutely fabulous trip! If you are considering booking, don’t hesitate you will love it. Cuba is totally unique and I feel privileged to have cycled Cuba before it changes. A full itinerary, combining cycling through vibrant Havana, small villages with very friendly people, alongside sugar plantations and even forest trails with crabs! A real mixed bag with lots of variation and even offered visits to museums with history briefings and a couple of chances to visit clubs and sample salsa. Laz was an excellent guide and one of the best I have experienced with Exodus.

Most Inspirational Moment

Havana, Trinidad and the climb up Sierra Maestra.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Laz, was an excellent leader. One of the best. Very professional and his knowledge, social skills and English was superb.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pleased I took by gel seat cover, bottle for bike and cash in Sterling. Don't rely on credit cards and check before you travel if you plan to take another currency as very few are accepted.

Colours of Rajasthan

This was our first trip with Exodus and we were thrilled with our visit to India. The trip was very well organised and each day carefully planned so no time was wasted. A large area was covered, so there was quite a lot of time on the bus, but many stops en route (such as watching brick builders) and the sights along the way added to the experience. Besides the amazing temples, forts and other monuments we visited, there were still plenty of chances to learn about and experience life in Rajasthan.

Most Inspirational Moment

The fort at Jodhpur, Taj Mahal and the lake at Udaipur

Thoughts on Group Leader

Chandra was outstanding. The whole experience of the trip was enhanced by his guidance. His knowledge, humour and insights in to Indian life helped to create an exceptional holiday. He was always aware of our safety and was available 24/7.
