ESSENTIAL PERU

We certainly saw a great deal of Peru in the 15 day trip and now I am home and talking to friends about the experience it does sound action packed. However, there were too many early morning starts and long bus journeys for me and that took the edge off the enjoyment as I did not feel at my physical best. The high altitude and my ‘holiday stomach’ being an added complication.

Most Inspirational Moment

The 'home stay' was quite moving, we stayed with a very friendly family. We also enjoyed the floating island, the Sacred valley, Matchu Picchu and Cuzco.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was very good.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Really think about the long bus drives and the many early starts.

We realise that this a full itinerary with early starts and some long journeys, but we are sorry that Sharon was not at her best during the trip as we realise this must have been disappointing. All of the journeys are in a comfortable bus and we feel that clients see more of the country than they would flying, but we appreciate that some of the places visited are at high altitude and that this can affect people in different ways. Exodus will be using alternative accommodation in Aguas Calientes for our Essential Peru tour from 2016 onwards; we are sorry that Sharon found this property more basic than she had anticipated.

Quite different from mainstream cycling holidays. A brilliant mix of cycling as well being part of the massive variety of vibrant cultures, physical environments and unique wildlife that you experience as you travel through 3 very different countries.

Most Inspirational Moment

Night in the Mystica resort watching the sunset over Arenal Volcano, followed by the fabulous ride the following day around the lake.. The boat ride to Isla Colon and cycling through Veraguas province in Panama.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Memo and his team were outstanding. Professional, observant, knowledgeable and so enthusiastic .. great company..a team that made you smile.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be ready for very hot and humid weather, that was sometimes more challenging than the cycling ..lots of sunblock, and insect repellent . Take some white arm protectors. Embrace being woken up very early by the howler monkeys..what a wonderful sound to wake up to.

Walking the Great Wall

Fantastic trip – well organised, excellent itinerary and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The walking is pretty tough with hundreds of steps, but the amazing views are worth it. It’s hard to appreciate the scale of the wall until you see it stretching out for miles in every direction. The accommodation was better than I’d expected, as was the food. Sadly, I tore a ligament halfway though, which put me out of action for the rest of the trip, but based on the days I did do, I’d recommend this holiday to anyone.

Most Inspirational Moment

Watching the sun set over the mountains on the first day, and looking down into the valley to see how far we’d climbed. The almost vertical ’spiderman wall' was a bit daunting at first, but I really enjoyed it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jerry was fantastic – funny, sociable and professional. When I hurt my foot and couldn't walk, he literally carried me down off the hill! After that, he did his best to include me in other parts of the trip as much as possible (e.g. asking his friend to drive me to the bottom of the wall so I could take pictures). Jerry and the rest of the group, who were all brilliant and really fun, made a big difference in salvaging what could have been a frustrating few days for me.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring snacks – breakfasts weren’t always that substantial and there was sometimes a long time till lunch, so I definitely needed a mid-morning chocolate bar. And take warm clothes for the evening as it was freezing once the sun went down.

Ethiopia in Depth

This trip opens your eyes to an oft neglected and misunderstood place. Ethiopia is not brown and parched. Ethiopia is not 1984 and Live Aid. Ethiopia is a beautiful place, with so much to see and a people very proud of their long and interesting (independent) history. Ethiopia is a surprise and a joy to visit.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were lots of wonderful moments but the highlight for me was sitting on the top of a hill in the Simien Mountains next to a herd of Gelada monkeys eating and playing and grooming each other. I would like to apologise to David Attenbrough - I remember watching a documentary where he was standing in amongst a herd of Gelada and shouting at the TV, "Well, that would never happen!" How wrong I was. A truly special moment.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Gabre was full of enthusiasm for his country and he is a great ambassador for Ethiopia. A warm, funny, intelligent man who wanted to tell us so much and share everything with us. He went above and beyond for us. The trip ended on Saturday afternoon but several of us had expressed an interest in buying coffee and seeing some opals and Gabre gave up his free time to help us do that. He was always available to ask questions and to give food and eating places advice. He also very gallantly took us to a tej bar to sample the local brew - an acquired taste!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Please go with an open mind and a sense of fun. I did not have a warm shower for about 5/6 days and in one hotel I had no water at all. Did it matter? No. The Simien Mountain hotel is basic but it is clean and that is what counts. A lot of the hotels were a pleasant surprise and far exceeded my expectations. Try and read up on some history/literature before you go - The Emperor, The Barefoot Emperor, In Ethiopia on a Mule.

An enjoyable week - recommended

It’s almost superfluous to repeat what everyone else says – that the hotel is relaxed, informal and friendly and the food is excellent. The walking programme is fine-tuned by the leader on a daily basis to take account of the weather and the abilities of the party.

Most Inspirational Moment

No single moment: as is so often the case in the mountains, it's the views that make the slog worthwhile!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alvaro is an amazing leader, with lots of local knowledge of the terrain and the flora and fauna. During our week he kept a close eye on the (variable) weather and amended the walking programme accordingly so we didn't get too much rain (there was sunshine as well!)

Advice for Potential Travellers

Look carefully at the grade description. I feel that it is slightly more strenuous than implied by "moderate" - as a comparison I would put this trip firmly into Ramblers' Grade C.

Amalfi Coast Hike

I did my first Exodus trip hiking the Amalfi Coast in September. It far surpassed my expectations. The hike itself is so beautiful. Everyday we were treated to absolutely spectacular views. The hiking was challenging as there were lots of ups and downs but it was “very doable” as our lovely guide Christine told us.

The group was made up of some Canadians with most being from the UK. I really enjoyed the dynamics of the group and our leader set the tone for what was a very pleasant time.

Our accommodation for the trip was also excellent, as was the food and the special activities like making pasta and tirimisu. Any problems that arouse were quickly taken care of and the staff were very helpful.

I’m already looking for another Exodus trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

Probably the views. They took your breathe away. Especially from the high views.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christine was excellent. She is so positive and encouraging and we loved her little sayings that we were all quoting by the end of the week.

Iceland Northern lights

If you’ve never been to Iceland, & you love the outdoors, you really must put it on your bucket list. Fantastic scenery, intriguing history and culture with weather systems that give all 4 seasons in one day. Who would believe that the sand on the beaches really is black!

Most Inspirational Moment

The glacial lagoon is a sight like no other..no wonder it features in lots of movies including 007 sipping prosecco in The blue lagoon on the final day is a great way to end the holiday

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader, Ipe was fantastic. Not only was she our leader for the week but also the driver and her local knowledge was second to non.....she even found the northern light for us despite low probability forecasts

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't let the variable weather conditions happen you spirits. It may well be sunshine in an hour it really is that variable....but have your rain gear with you at all times!

The best safari yet!

A fantastic, immersive safari experience that gets you close to the wildlife for some great photographic opportunities, with a five-star luxury camp to enjoy when not out on the Mara plains filling your memory cards. This is not a relaxing holiday, but it is the best way to get close to the incredible wildlife and to take your photography skills to the next level. It’s also lots of fun!

Most Inspirational Moment

This is tough but I can narrow it down to three: First night, waiting for sundowners, Paul had tracked a cheetah and anticipated it would climb a Boscia tree. We positioned our vehicles so that the setting sun would be behind the tree and waited. Sure enough the cheetah climbed up and we were able to capture it as a silhouette against a stunning Mara sunset. Cheetah kill: we spent the morning waiting for Malaika and her 3 sub-adult cubs to hunt. They eyed-up some wildebeest in the distance and we positioned the vehicles for the best vantage point, but in so doing, we disturbed a hare that ran off at speed. The cheetahs spotted this ‘amuse bouche’ on legs, made chase and executed a perfect kill right in front of our vehicle. Adrenalin overload! Leopard with cubs: Bahati, a beautiful leopard, moved her 8-week-old cubs to a new den, carrying them one by one in her mouth. A very rare sight, and a privilege to watch. And then there’s the Scotch egg that also deserves mention: voted Top Mara breakfast!

Thoughts on Group Leader

I’ve been on a few trips with Paul and know that he takes no prisoners. My two friends and I were called the ‘Sunshine Variety Club outing’ because we were so slow with our cameras; (which we thought hilarious). So if you’re too slow, or you don’t know how your camera works properly or you are not prepared to take risks with your photography then you may get an earful. However if you want to learn, then Paul will pass on hugely useful tips and advice so that you will never take just a plain old ‘record shot’ again (though of course we amateurs need at least one of those!). Paul is harder on himself than on his guests; if he calls it wrong (admittedly this is rare) or is himself too slow to get the correct lens on (it happens!), then the air will turn blue. His objective is for you to get the great shots, he works hard to make this happen and his good cop/bad cop approach pays dividends in the end. Wallflowers need not apply… But bring a thick skin with you, and throw a few filthy jokes into the mix and you’ll be fine, and what’s more, you’ll go home with a gallery of photographs that you will treasure.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get to know your camera – not just ‘auto’ but all the other buttons too. Bring the best lens you can, and hire one if the eye-watering prices for new glass are beyond you. You will regret not doing so once you are in situ: lens envy is not good. I had a Canon 7D and a 1D with a 100-400 lens but was v envious of the 500mm lenses. However, I got some great shots once I’d got all the various bells and whistles on my camera sorted – and used the bean bag for stability (they are in all vehicles). Bring a wide lens too as the Mara skies are simply stunning. One of my favourite shots has no animals in it at all. In addition to your usual pro-style camera bag for taking as hand-luggage, bring a softer day pack for using in the vehicles: these will get dusty and need to be crammed under the seat - big camera bags will be too bulky. Bring enough memory cards or a laptop/hard drive to download – you will take many more photographs than you could ever imagine. A laptop/tablet is also useful so you can review your photos at the end of each day; there are plenty of UK plug sockets in the mess tent for recharging but no sockets in the tents which are solar powered (no hairdryers required!). Take note of the luggage weight limit and pack accordingly (though our luggage was not weighed for the internal flight). Ballgowns and tiaras not required as it is v casual in camp. Pack light and take advantage of the awesome laundry system (taken in the morning, washed and ironed by 5pm). Take a fleece for the early mornings as it is cold out before the sun rises, but the heat of the midday sun can be scorchio, so bring sunscreen. I stashed an energy/nutty bar in my day-pack each morning, as there can be a long wait until breakfast if you are on a stake-out!

Walking in Cappadocia

A totally unique landscape which is a “Must See” if you want something different. The walks are mostly in valleys and are easy. We’ve never seen so many caves! This is the true way to see Turkey and meet the people, who are very friendly and welcoming. Don’t expect to loose weight though – the traditional food is very tasty and plentiful!

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to say as it was all great. The valley walks are fascinating. We also went on an early morning (start before sunrise) balloon trip which was brilliant- well organised and magical. Over 100 balloons in the air at the same time. It was like fairyland as we set off in the early morning twilight seeing all the flames from the gas burners lighting up the balloons - never to be forgotten! Remember to take your camera! One thing that will always stay with us is one morning whilst walking through a local village an old lady gave us some freshly baked bread to taste and a man came across with some molasses he was preparing in which we dipped the bread - it was like nectar. Someone else then came over with grape juice to sample. What a nice gesture by a poor community.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ferat was an excellent leader, living up to the exodus high standards we have always experienced. Our driver was also excellent, very safe and thoughtful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a travel sink plug for the sink in the hotel - there wasn't one in it! Although the walks are easy you will still need good boots as the ground can be rough.

Madeira Walking trip

Every day was very different- mountains, seascapes & levada walks, with plenty of culture, nature & history too

Most Inspirational Moment

Great sense of achievement getting to the top of the high mountains after a tough climb up all those steps, & seeing the mountains & valleys all around, drifting in & out of the mist

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andre was well-organised, friendly & informative. To our shame, we didn't always follow his directions too well but we all got there in the end & had a lot of fun along the way!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take clothing for hot, cold & wet conditions- we experienced every extreme of weather during our week at the end of October. To get the most from this holiday you need to be fit for a couple of days of steep climbs & descents, & walking for 6 or 7 hours
