Cycling in Albania: Big Hills, great food!

Cycling in Albania is not easy, but is rewarding. The views commanded from some of the many climbs were spectacular. We enjoyed staying in some of the more remote parts of the country and then on to the slightly more commercialised coast. The evenings were great fun, with superb food, and an interesting group of cyclists. Despite the mixed ability almost everyone completed every ride including the final climb over Llogara pass.

Undoubtedly the climb up the Llogara pass felt like quite an achievement.

Dhimo (Group Leader) and Juli (Driver/Support) were fantastic. A great couple of guys. Attentive to all our needs, sociable and informative.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We travelled late Sept and it was a cooler than expected early morning and in the evenings. Definitely pay attention to the grading and daily ascents in the trip notes. It's not an easy trip. The notes describe it being chilly at the top of the Llogara pass. You soon cool down and then it feels pretty cold. We were all very pleased to take refuge in the bar at the top and glad to be served soup for lunch in the bar a few minutes into the descent. The lunches everywhere are huge and delicious. You won't go hungry.

The Best Kili Experience

I couldn’t have asked for a better Kilimanjaro experience than what I had with Exodus. The guides and rest of staff were incredibly knowledgable and attentive, the Lemosho route was beautiful and varied in its scenery and summit night – though mentally and physically taxing – was an incredibly fulfilling experience.

Summiting the mountain was obviously very inspirational but I also thoroughly loved the Shira Cathedral and the Branco Wall climb.

My group leader John Maeda was a really big reason the experience was so great. He was so knowledgeable and switched on and was loved by everyone in the group.

Amazing Amalfi, Lovely Limoncello

This was a well organized trip with varied activities each day – a good mix of walking,culture and cuisine. It was an excellent introduction to this beautiful area, which made us want to return. Every member of our happy group helped to make it a memorable tour.

The Walk of the Gods, Herculaneum and Pompeii. Our group meals with wine and limoncello! The cooking demonstrations at the hotel.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eduardo shared his unique knowledge of the area in which he lives and seemed to know everyone. Not only did he skilfully steer us through the week's itinerary but also made himself available to help us make use of our 'free time'. A great combination of professionalism and fun. Without Eduardo we would not have discovered some of the local places of interest.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The least leisurely day was the one when we did the Walk of the Gods. It is not strenuous most of the way but you need to be able to manage a few areas of rocky terrain / boulders and take your time. Stopping to admire the views is a good idea anyway. Once you finish it, you feel a sense of achievement. Walking poles help but don't rely on the ones at the hotel. These are abandoned by previous walkers and not all in good enough condition.

Cycling In Amalfi, Italy

Padded cycle shorts. Get as cycle fit as you can, that way you can enjoy the very best of the scenery.

A Great Ride!

The best way to see the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Hungary is by bike and taking this fabulously guided tour. These countries are well versed in cycling and have bike paths that go for miles and miles and are in good condition. There is some cycling that happens on main roads but cars are very accommodating of cyclists. The most difficult terrain is in the first couple of days with a lot of undulating hills. For this it is best if you have some cycling experience. Strangely enough the terrain turns flat about half way through the trip which is good for a while but believe it or not as scenic as the countryside is, you’ll find yourself wishing for the odd hill or two just for variety and believe me that’s not something I thought I ever would have said.
Transfers on the bus are minimal compared to other trips which is good because the bus is small and we had an excellent driver so safety was never an issue.
The accommodation included a mix of hotels and pensions. You can expect twin beds which is noteworthy if travelling as a couple. This is the European way and in most cases the beds could be pushed together if you wanted. On only one occasion did we have beds with the springs being not far below the surface and in another there was no hot water which was disappointing after a long days cycle but on the whole they were very satisfactory and everything was well organised upon our arrival. They were also centrally located which was a bonus in the bigger cities.
The spread at breakfast was excellent at every stop. However, I should mention that if you’re gluten free like myself, it is more of a challenge. I picked up some supplies in Prague and carried them with me. Also, the restaurants and cafes we stopped at also don’t cater to gluten free and throw in vegetarian and it can get tricky. Our guide was really helpful in trying to ensure I at least got something at lunch and dinner. There are regular stops near shops to pick up supplies.
You will find the bikes themselves to be heavier than what you’re used to but you soon adapt. They were safely locked away each night and spares are carried in case there are any problems along the way.
Our starts in the morning were at reasonable times which is great if like myself you’re not a morning person. At the end of each day, the following days information would be shared.
There are plenty of breaks throughout the day starting with morning coffee, followed by lunch and an afternoon break on longer ride days. There were a few occasions were it would have been better to push on especially when it was pouring rain and you were soaked as stopping for a lengthy time only allowed you to get cold. My suggestion would be to poll the group and possibly do shorter stops especially when the weather is bad.
Our group spent almost the entire trip together including at night and free time. Dinners were often followed by nightcaps in the hotel bar. A great way to end the day!
It was extremely helpful in the bigger cities that our guide gave us an overview as it really helped us get our bearings for our free time. Our morning tours of some of the smaller towns were a great start to the day and the scenery was spectacular.

Most Inspirational Moment

Surviving the two days of hills and pouring rain and wind when you at times couldn't see what was in front of you. The beauty of the places we visited and the overwhelming sense of history. Getting to know the various people on the group and hearing their stories. Seeing my own cycling ability improve over the days. Stepping out from the metro in Budapest and seeing the Buda side of the city in the late afternoon.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dana our group leader was fantastic. She was a wealth of historical information which she was more than willing to pass on to us and educate us about the history behind the countries we were travelling through. Also, her ability to speak the languages was naturally beneficial especially when it came to my getting fed. There were 15 people in our group with a range of cycling abilities and she did an excellent job of keeping us all on track and getting us from A to B each day. She stayed with us at times when she didn't have to and really she was just a lot of fun. Her back up, Hainek was also a lot of fun. He could be relied upon for great discussions on world affairs and knew all the best spots for ice cream. He held up the rear of the group with good grace and always had a smile.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Ensure you have water protected rain gear from top to bottom. We ended up using shower caps over our helmets but had nothing to protect the legs and feet. The temperature was cool the morning so prepare to have some layers. Saddle bags were provided so you don't need to being one and for the women, bring your own saddle if you can, I wish I had!

Mont Blanc Highlights

A thoroughly enjoyable week – spectacular walking with an interesting and varied group of fellow guests; very comfortable accommodation in the chalet; delightful and welcoming hosts (Sarah and Rich); fantastic food; easy access to the lovely town of Chamonix.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many! Of course the views - helped by ( generally) sunny but coolish, ideal walking, weather. The day in Italy above Courmeyer was particularly stunning. It has definately inspired me to do more walking in mountainous terrain. An unexpected pleasure was the amazing cooking of our Chalet hosts. The evening meal quickly became one of my most keenly anticipated events of the day!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was friendly and congenial company. He was clearly very experienced, having worked in the region for a number of years, which ensured that I felt safe and well supported while we were in the mountains. He provided lots of information both prior to the walks as well as during them. He was supportive of the 'weaker' members of the group but also made it clear when he thought a particular walk was beyond our capabilities.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The walking is not particuarly technically difficult (hence the 3 rating) but it is physically challenging. I would have said that I was reasonably fit and did some additional training in preparation but I struggled (and generally failed) to maintain the pace set by the rest of the group. Between them my fellow walkers had climbed Kilimanjaro, walked the Annapurna Circuit and Inca Trail and trekked to Everest Base Camp! A The central base does allow for the possibility of ducking out of the most strenuous days and our guide provided directions to alternative, less demanding trails when required.

Walking the prosecco hills

Overall, it was a very enjoyable trip. The beautiful countryside, good hotel, with friendly and helpful staff together with top quality food and drink were super. Personally, I would have enjoyed longer and more varied walks. At times, in the latter part of the day, after our walks, it would be good to break the journey home with a stop either at a place of interest, like a local village or refreshment stop. (If the weather was wet, there wouldn’t be a great deal to do back at the hotel).

Most Inspirational Moment

It is very hard to pick a highlight. The Villa Barbaro was outstanding and memorable. The overall quality and variety of the food and drink was terrific. The last night meal at The Swallow, was a corker!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Severio was pleasant, with an easy going style but he could have been better. As a native of Italy, it would have been good if he could have told us more about the culture and history of the region. I didn't expect him to be an expert in all areas, but he would sometimes make up answers to questions instead of just saying, 'I don't know, perhaps I can find out'. His knowledge of flora and fauna, for example, was poor, which is not a problem in itself. LWhat I found irritating was,for example, that when we came across the body off large black snake and asked what type it was; rather than admit that he didn't know;he told us that it was a grass snake. A couple of days later we discovered that it was actually a European whip snake! Generally, he was a bit too casual. At lunch stops, we rarely knew how long we had to eat; he would often just say, after a while, that we'd be leaving in five minutes. Severio always got us where we needed to be on time, but didn't volunteer the sort of additional information that would have added a great deal to the holiday. A simple map of some the places where we stayed and visited would have been helpful or a verbal outline of recommended places to see or things to do , would have been useful.
