Cycling Vietnam Holiday

This trip provided a wonderful insight into life in Vietnam and took me from one modern city, Saigon in the south to another, Hanoi in the North. I learnt about the history, culture and the people and travelled on a train and three different types of bot. The cycling not only enabled me to improve my fitness, overcome personal challenges but also allowed me to get ‘up close’ to the people and wildlife in this beautiful country.

Most Inspirational Moment

Completing a 10 KM a sent up a 10% hill (or was it a mountain).

Thoughts on Group Leader

Yuan was an exceptional guide who went above and beyond the expectations of me personally and the rest of the group, many of whom like me, are seasoned Exodus travellers. Yuan was committed to ensuring we sampled all the sights, sounds and tastes of Vietnam and he had a great 'road team' to support him. He created a family for the duration of the holiday and he should be highly commended for all he did to make the trip so memorable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Only to take a camel pack with a mouth piece for sucking water as I had one with a manual valve on the mouth piece. Cycling in the heat was a trial on some of the days and I would have found life easier with a better system for drinking.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our Group Leader Danh Nguyen was excellent from the moment we arrived until we had checked in at the airport to leave. Nothing was too much trouble and he arranged a number of nice touches to make the holiday even more enjoyable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

A reasonable level of fitness helps make this trip more enjoyable and be prepared to deal with cycling in the sun with lots of sun screen.

Cycling Vietnam

This was an excellent holiday, within the time/distance restraints of the trip. Everything was organised and implemented very professionally, and also with genuine attention to customer service. The local team were fantastic. This is a combination holiday – experiencing Vietnam, and cycling. If you like to cycle from start to finish, or are worried by fairly heavy traffic over not-insignificant parts of the route, then this might not be for you. In particular, note that there is a lot of time spent in the coach. However, for us, it was all worth it. We really felt we experienced a lot of Vietnam, we were pushed just the right amount to ensure we felt we’d really achieved something in terms of cycling exertion (we holiday quite a lot on bikes) – and the trip organisation and the efforts of our tour leader (Chi) just couldn’t be faulted.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the top of the Hai Van pass and cruising through the flat approaches to Hue seeing unspoilt Vietnamese villages and excited children.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would suggest a reasonable level of cycling fitness is required for this trip. The heat/humidity can at times really put the pressure on. Bring a gel seat if you're not regularly cycling!

Mot Hai Ba Yoh

Fabulous holiday. I am not a cyclist at all, I usually go on hill walking holidays, but I was persuaded by my daughter to go on this holiday. The cycling was tough for me, undulating means hilly. A fast pace was set at all times and after the first couple of days I really thought I would have to go in the vehicle support, but I persevered and even did the Hai Van Pass, with lots of encouragement.It was very hot especially in the south The accommodation was far better than I had expected. The food was exceptional and Bia Saigon went down very well at the end of the day.

Most Inspirational Moment

I was out of my comfort zone a lot of the time but seeing the happy smiley faces of the children, waving and shouting hello was great and put a smile on my face. My favourite day was the cycle from Da Lat to Nha trang,, beautiful scenery, small villages and 32km of downhill, the only day I was not last. The local markets were amazing with every kind of fish, meat imaginable. You name it the market had it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Long was fantastic as were the rest of his team, the mechanic,the truck driver and the bus driver. Long was always smiling and encouraging. He was full of knowledge on all the different areas we visited. He could tell us about the different fruits He took us to great places to eat in the evenings ( although this not included in itinerary) be it restaurants or street food. One of the best leaders I have encountered, nothing was too much trouble for him

Advice for Potential Travellers

I had my 60th birthday while on this trip and as I said not a cyclist although I do consider my self reasonably fit, so do some fitness especially for the hills. Maybe consider sleeping mat or similar for the overnight train journey. Be prepared for some long days on the bus.

Cycling Vietnam

A good holiday overall. The cycling was harder and faster than we were led to believe in the brochure which spoilt the first few days. Couldn’t stop for photos as got left behind. In fact it was difficult to sightsee and cycle sometimes.

V good, helpful, happy and generous. The only criticism was that he was unable to control the pace set by some of the men.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Yes, you need to be fitter than advertised and the pace is faster too.

Vietnam - Mot Hi Bai Yo!

We thoroughly enjoyed the cycling trip to Vietnam. The cycling itself was hard and a little too fast at times. The bus came in handy on a couple of occasions! The hotels were better than expected. The food was sensational (I just bought a Vietnamese cookbook!). The trip combined a huge amount into two weeks – beaches, cities, mountains, countryside, urban chaos….!

Most Inspirational Moment

The single best moment of the tour for me was cycling through the back streets of Hue. The scenery was amazing, the streets were narrow, we passed rice paddy fields, buffalo and local people going about their daily lives with smiles on their faces. I couldn't help but smile as we cycled along.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Long was brilliant! He smiled continuously throughout the two weeks and worked incredibly hard from dawn till dusk every day to make out trip memorable. He brought a huge amount of the history, culture and style of Vietnam forward which would otherwise have been missed. His sense of humour was great and he always had a joke to lift us when we were tired.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Expect to cycle hard and fast, with plenty of hills. Don't underestimate it.

Cycling Vietnam

We shared our trip with 16 others and each day we experienced something different. The scenery was stunning, the diversity of crops and farming was amazing and having a window into the history and the present day lives of the people of Vietnam was indeed a privilege. We had so many experiences, perhaps a bit long in the bus on some days but that gave us a rest and enabled us to reach our daily destinations. Some days the riding was pretty strenuous with the heat but I was grateful for my pre holiday fitness on the bike. Finishing up with the overnight train ride from Hue to Hanoi was fun and the trip on the boat to Halon Bay was stunning.

Most Inspirational Moment

How many inspirations can one have on a holiday? There were many for me, I loved seeing the diversity of the land, the cities were chaotic and crossing the roads a hazard but what vibrant and different places they were. The people of Vietnam were friendly and their children were an absolute delight, running out onto the edge of the road in the country areas calling 'hello' whenever they saw us cycling. They were our inspiration during the tough cycling times and their enthusiasm, openness and joy in calling was quite infectious to our own happiness.

Lam our group leader was the best! He made a special connection with each of us and was constantly positive, happy and so very knowledgeable. He made our holiday into the best we could have wished for.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We gave ourselves two nights in Saigon before the actual tour and we enjoyed that. Also cycling fitness helps to make the trip an even happier and enjoyable one.

Incredible vietnam

What an incredible holiday! Everything exceeded expectations from the excellent knowledge and planning from our guide to the food and fabulous scenery Vietnam provides, it’s going to take a lot to beat this trip.

Fantastic

A holiday overflowing with amazing memories

It was with a little trepidation that I set off with my wife to Ho Chi Minh City to begin a two week cycling holiday in Vietnam. Fears were quickly dispelled as we met Chi, our guide, and our fellow cyclists. From Day 1 it was fairly obvious our group was going to get on and so it proved. A age range from 23 to 68 didn’t create any issues, we were all reasonably fit and shared an outgoing sense of fun and adventure. There were even a few tears as we all parted company in Hanoi having enjoyed an adventure together which will live long in our memories.

Most Inspirational Moment

I think pushing myself up the Hai Van Pass, a climb of over 500 metres, and hearing the cheers of our group as each of us reached the top of the pass. Then plunging at ridiculous speeds down the mountain towards Hue.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Chi was quite simply the best group leader we could have hoped for. He was protective when he needed to be, informative at all times, answered all our questions with knowledge and patience. Anyone lucky enough to get Chi as a guide will be rewarded with an inspirational leaded, an extremely well organised individual and a wonderfully warm human being.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Whilst months of pre holiday heavy duty training will not be necessary, the better your body is prepared so the more enjoyment you will get from your holiday. Don't try to be the centre of attention, let the group dynamics sort themselves out. If our group was typical everyone will get along fine. Whilst the weather for us in January and February was perfect we did have a wet day with a head wind where a light cycling jacket would have been handy. If chaotic traffic unnerves you, pack a few sedatives or a blindfold!

Cycling

My first cycling holiday- hopefully not the last. This was a great way to see the best of Vietnam in the company of a great group. I had not been on a holiday with a group I did not know before and although most of the group were much younger than me I feel I have made lots of new friends.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the top of the Hai Van pass was the highlight of the trip for me. I never thought I would make it and being cheered on by the group as I reached the top was a very special moment, However, there were many wonderful moments ...seeing all the children who cheered us on as if we were super stars, negotiating our way out of Dalat in the traffic, eating lovely local food.

Our leader Chi was the best. He was well organised, informative and funny. Nothing was too much trouble. The rest of the support team were also excellent. Our bikes were ready for us each morning, our water bottles were filled at each stop, We were also provided with fresh fruit and snacks at each stop and we were literally given a push up the hills if we were struggling.

Advice for Potential Travellers

My padded shorts were invaluable. It was helpful to have two pairs as they did not always dry overnight when I washed them. Also a light waterproof top or fleece would have helped so that it can be removed and carried if the weather improves. We got very wet one day and not much would have helped. However we changed when we reached the bus and it was not cold.,We were provided with lots of snacks and drinks every 20 km but I would have preferred a camelbak to a bottle to enable me to cycle without stopping for a drink as I went as I could not get my bottle back in the holder without stopping. We needed hats and gloves at Halong Bay as well as fleeces and coats but this would depend on the time you are there. It was also cooler in the evenings and long trousers did not go amiss. A camera is a must!
