Review of Sardinia Cycling trip

A fantastic week of cycling. Well guided, plenty of interesting sites and great accommodation. The weather in the last week of October was perfect for cycling and Sardinia is the best ‘new place’ I’ve visited in a long time

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to the top of the 6km climb and everyone cheering each other on.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Marco and Giovanni were excellent guides and they created a brilliant atmosphere for the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Spin classes and regular running before the trip

Cycle Cuba 2014

Excellent cycling holiday, great mix of easy and challenging cycling seeing some lovely sights along the way

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling to small tropical beaches for a refreshing cool off before the next 20km cycle on a 85km day.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jose our group leader was fantastic, really informative and passionate about his country. Explained the itinerary and routes well, nothing was ever too much trouble.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take your own seat along for added comfort and a small handlebar bag to put your camera in for all those impromptu photos along the way

Cycle Sardinia

Enjoyable cycling on extremely quiet roads on a beautiful island.

Most Inspirational Moment

I wouldn't say there were any particularly inspirational moments, but the last days's cycling was really lovely. The route goes mainly along one of the roads on the south coast, and the views were really something - almost amazing enough to make you forget all the uphill parts! We were really lucky with the weather, especially considering we travelled at the end of October - we had sunny days with 24/25 degree heat all week, with just a few rain showers that passed quickly. The locals did tell us that such good weather was quite unusual for that time of year though.

Thoughts on Group Leader

They were fabulous. We had Marco and Giovanni, and they both went out of their way to make everybody's holiday a good one. They were friendly, yet professional and well-organised. Really nice people.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The trip notes state that this trip is suitable for 'occasional cyclists who exercise regularly'. I don't think that quite fits the bill. Day three of the itinerary, which is day two of cycling, ends with what is according to the trip notes 'a steady climb'. Think European hill steady climb as opposed to British hill steady climb. It went on for ages - and I do mean ages. I think I was going up what I would class as a bloody steep hill for about an hour. It must have been at least 10kms, if not more. Unless you're a really fit cyclist, it's a killer. Day two is tough too. I found the food quite bland, so you might want to take some chillies with you if you like to spice things up a bit. On the positive side, you definitely won't starve - there was soooo much food. I actually didn't want to even look at another bowl of pasta by the end of the trip. On the last day some of us took the opportunity before the group transfer to visit the nearby ancient ruins of Nora. They are really worth the visit and are right next to the beach, so you can swim too if you want. It's easy to walk there and takes about 35 minutes.

Cheryl McBroom

The trip to Sri Lanka was a fun and full on trip, every day was different and enjoyable.

Most Inspirational Moment

The safari was excellent to see the elephant gathering was spectacular.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Roshan Ferninand was an excellent group leader he made us laugh and even taught us Sri Lankan songs.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The trip notes covered everything that was required to take on the trip.

Brilliant trip

This was a superb trip! The group support from the 15 trekkers was truly fantastic and we helped each other through any challenging bits. We had excellent guides and porters, and the teahouses were relatively comfortable, with a more varied diet on offer than I'd expected. I was genuinely surprised at how good the teahouses were – not luxurious of course, but certainly homely and welcoming. The views at all stages were stunningly beautiful and I felt truly humbled by the magnificence of the Sanctuary itself – it was very emotional getting there.

Most Inspirational Moment

Too many to mention. Every day brought new highs (literally and metaphorically). Reaching Ulleri at the end of the hard first day climb was delightful, and gave a palpable sense of achievement. Ghorepani/Poon Hill was good, but very very busy. Reaching Hinku Cave, in the footprints of the giants (Chris Bonington et al) was very humbling. The Base Camps each held their own delights, and the massage at Jhinudanda at the end of 9 days walking was stupendous! The massage was so good, I started day 10 with muscles as relaxed as on day 1. Highly recommended!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Prasant was excellent - constantly cheerful and optimistic and extremely hard-working. He was an inspiration to us all. He is highly experienced and Exodus is very lucky to have him on their staff. He's a great team leader and worked hard to make sure the other guides and porters were well looked after. As a result, we felt that the whole group, trekkers, guides and porters, were working together at all stages.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take the warmest sleeping bag you can - it was very cold at the Base Camps. Don't take too many clothes - you won't use them all - but do make sure you have gear for all weathers. We had very little rain while we were walking, but we were lucky. Take trail mix/energy or cereal bars for a quick energy fix.

Cape and Winelands Cycling Tour

Very enjoyable trip. Wynand, the guide, was good company, very informative and kept the group well organised throughout the trip.

Beautiful country, particularly enjoyed the coastal areas and Cape Peninsula.

As usual, large group meals can be restricting.

Most Inspirational Moment

Argus Route

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be aware that there are 3 consecutive afternoons of Wine Tasting

Cycling in Cuba

A really fantastic trip, varied and very interesting the trip notes do describe it well.

Most Inspirational Moment

Trinidad was gorgeous, as was Havana... the whole trip was fascinating and we really enjoyed the cycling which was very manageable, despite it being really hot and humid.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Freddy was excellent, he worked so hard as guide, cycle leaders, political and historical teacher, he was really brilliant I also liked to way he was so concerned to share the financial benefits of our presence among different people, by going to different fruit stores and to local family run restaurants as well as taking gifts to the local school

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take lots of anti mosquito spray, we got bitten during the day while cycling. Better to take your own loo roll too as most toilets do not provide it Very few opportunities to change money, need to take a debit card and/or cash I wish I had taken a little gift for our Casa hosts, and I also wish I had taken a few little toys/crayons/pens for the children we talked to, but if you take pens/crayons you need to also take paper as they have very few resources in the schools and noting at home

Amalfi coast with the kids

We took our two children, age 5 and 6, to Italy for the first time. In his words, my son Ben’s verdict was ‘Wowzers!.

Most Inspirational Moment

My 6 year old daughter was over the moon to climb around the crater of Vesuvius and feel the hot steam coming from the rocks. She's still talking about it at schoolo now and it's inspired her to draw pictures, write stories, play games, build Roman ruins from lego....it obviously made a huge impression.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Can't fault her - really enthusiastic, organised and pre-empted all of our needs fantastically.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Our son Ben (5) needed a piggy back on the Walk of the Gods. I would conserve their energy on the active days so they don't get too tired before the adventure starts.

Walking the Amalfi Coast

The 4 walks were all excellent and brilliantly led by our leader. The sight seeing days were also excellent, with opportunities to visit Pompeii, Vesuvius and Herculaneum. The hotel was fine – nothing luxurious, but everything worked and the staff were very friendly. Food was good, including the vegetarian options.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking around the edge of Vesuvius - really scary!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent. Good fun and very knowledgeable about the area.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Check the weather before your trip. I was caught out by the chilly evenings. Avoid the table wine in the hotel!

Jordan trip

This was a trip of a lifetime. Just loved it so much. We had such fun against a breathtaking desert backdrop. I also felt I learned so much about the geography of Jordan. It was more than I expected it to be and I would go back in a camel’s heartbeat.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking through the remote desert in Wadi Rum, not meeting another sole for days.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader, Salah, was great. He had great English. He did walk a bit too fast..it wasn't a problem fitness wise as I'm fit but It would have been nice to stop for more pictures...he literally was way out in front every day, never looking back, on his own up front.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I had been worried about our safety on the trip due to Jordan's close proximity to Syria but I felt entirely safe. I didn't get any bother at all unlike when I went to Tunisia and Egypt. I would thoroughly recommend the Jordan trip.
