Hurray! We’re honoured to have won the Sustainability Champion Award at the 2022 Which? Awards that acknowledges our sustainability efforts and are proud to be the only adventure travel tour operator shortlisted for the nomination.
We run incredible adventures, responsibly, which is why we were one of the first adventure travel tour operators to set the goal of being Nature Net Positive as part of our Nature First commitment.
At Exodus, we love to immerse ourselves in the sights, sounds and unique cultures that make our world wonderful – and that includes our wild spaces. And so, our Nature First commitment, encompasses goals that aim to preserve these beautiful wild spaces for generations to come, by aiming to half our carbon footprint, supporting nature restoration projects in our destinations and eliminating as much waste as possible from our trips.
One of the key ways we will be taking climate and biodiversity action is through rewilding. Heeding the wise words of David Attenborough on the pressing need to restore our natural world, we contacted leading conservationists, Rewilding Europe, and committed to rewilding 100 square metres for every passenger who books a trip with us, co-launching the Nature and Carbon Corridors Project, which aims to rewild 5,000 hectares in the Italian Apennines over five years.
We are also in the process of expanding our rail booking service across our most-loved European destinations, giving customers a “no fly” transport option to their holidays. Another area we are focusing on is transparency around our carbon footprint publishing the carbon footprint on representative trips to keep our customers informed.
We want to ensure that travelling the Exodus way creates a force for good, as we use our expertise to improve life in hard-to-reach places. At the peak of the pandemic, our thoughts quickly turned to our destination communities, many of which were profoundly economically impacted by the global pause in tourism.
We established our Community Kickstart Project to empower our global network to support their local communities. This included funding Exodus operator, Karma, to distribute 2,500 packed food parcels to the homeless and hungry in Kathmandu; enabling tour leader, Wye, to build a rainwater harvesting community garden that benefitted 360 families in Malaysia whose food supply was badly disrupted during the pandemic and enabling operator, Nathalie, to run a week-long empowerment and income generation workshop for Masai women in Kenya.
