Cycling Albania

A fantastic way to see this wonderful country. The first part of the trip is mainly inland in more rural mountainous areas and the second part along the Albanian riviera.

Great hospitality and food, considerate drivers on the roads and friendly people as we passed through the smaller places.

The cycling has some challenging climbs on the first and final days but is as described on the trip notes and classification. Nice to have some shorter cycling days to be able to do the tours in Gjirokaster and the Roman site at Butrint.

Most Inspirational Moment

Roman city of Butrint.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Great service by our group leader Dimitri especially in managing and organising the coffee stops, lunches and evening meals.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you try the Iced coffee in cans. Lunches were lovely but maybe too much for lunchtime whilst cycling, show self restraint!

Surprisingly pleasant country

A great trip with a knowledgeable trip leader. We visited numerous castles, mosques and churches. The mountains are magnificent as are the plains, rivers and beaches.

Most Inspirational Moment

Entering the home of our hosts for a traditional lunch. The food was all produced locally and the garden was delightful. The infrastructure was also a pleasant surprise - many good roads and hygienic sanitary provisions.

Thoughts on Group Leader

iLife was very knowledgeable and adapted well to our sense of humour. He and our driver went "the extra mile" to point out and deliver extra experiences.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't worry about hygiene - dress casually - leave high heels at home - get a map or guidebook to research the country and it's history before you go. The trip involves some awkward walking and cobbles so be prepared with sensible shoes. Change money in small aliquot - food is cheap and wine/beer is much cheaper. Try the local restaurants - there are no McDonalds etc.

Unforgetable.....

Just the best trip…. spectacular places with a fantastic group of people and THE best guide… 2 weeks of wonder, spender, remembrance, beauty, sleeper trains, nights afloat, rooftop bars, and fun and laughter all the way.. we met as strangers and left as friends… AMAZING!!!

Most Inspirational Moment

The friendships made

Thoughts on Group Leader

Trung was by far the best guide we've had. Professionalism balanced with sense of humour and a real feeling of being genuinely cared for. Knowledge oozed out of him from the beauty to the sadness of the places we saw and everything inbetween.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do it!!!

Trip of a lifetime

I had the most amazing holiday to a beautiful country. The trip is full on, non stop and so much fun. The people are so inviting to tourists, the country alive with vibrancy. From mayhem in the city to peaceful boat trips. Something for everyone.

Most Inspirational Moment

Ha Long Bay is a must see for any traveller. The scenery is outstanding. You cannot imagine it's beauty.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Trung Hoang was our leader and a better one you'd not find. He was so friendly and helpful as well as knowledgeable. Nothing was too much trouble.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be ready for a full on trip living out of a suitcase for the most part. A good tip is to arrive a day or two early and get over your jetlag before you start. If you can afford the time it's not expensive to stay on a few days later as well. I stayed on the island of Phu Quoc for 4 days afterwards to unwind. This is an hours flight from Saigon.

Great opportunity to see, hear, taste and truly experience Albania

A week in which you will challenge your fitness, enjoy delicious and healthful food, meet welcoming communities and see the beauty of unspoilt countryside.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Alberian people were kind and generous. All interactions we had were totally positive. We felt welcomed everywhere we went. Both mountain and coastal areas were wonderful, very different in architecture, scenery and culture.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dmitry was totally professional. Nothing was overlooked. He was very well prepared, kind, humerous and tireless. Our driver was on the ball with roadside bike adjustments, helping with baggage and a fabulous in- vehicle Playlist. His energy level was impressive.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Train, train, train. You will be glad you did. If in doubt of your desire to cycle like a fiend for a week; consider an ebike. Don't underestimate the hills. There is good reason that your guides supply snacks at every turn!

Cycling the Dalmation Coast

The Croatia coast line is an excellent place for cycling from the Istria peninsula up north all the way to the southern city of Dubrovnik. While this trip only covered the islands from Split to Dubrovnik, we did the first part across by hovercraft from Venice to Ravingy and then drove over 4 days hopping the islands to Split where we joined the Exodus group. The official trip had four days of biking. I would recommend that cyclist / travellers who have the time should do the entire length of Croatia along the islands. Car rental is very cost effective in Croatia. Any way you do it, it is a very scenic ride all the way down the coast.

Most Inspirational Moment

Croatia is a scenic country, appears well managed, with good tourism infrastructure and friendly people. The break up of Croatia from Yugoslavia and the sacrifice made by its citizens was moving but the effort has paid off.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mario Stojanovic (our group leader) was a absolute delight to lead the team. He made the trip enjoyable. He is very capable and stitched the group together. Can't thank him enough.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It can get very hot and only four star hotels have air conditioning. We had forest fires and route , ferry changes, and other natural disasters but Mario always had a plan B. For me the food servings was big quantities but the quality of cuisine did not impress especially if you compare it with French or Italian food. The quality of Croatian wine was acceptable, actually better than I expected.

Armenia nd Georgia are excellent destinations

I was pleasantly surprised by Armenia and Georgia. Bot countries far exceeded my expectations for them. People are friendly. Prices are cheap by western European and American standards. The scenery is beautiful. Our hotels were nice.

Most Inspirational Moment

I'm not a religious person, but I actually very much enjoyed visiting the numerous churches and monasteries.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The leaders in both countries were excellent. It was Nona in Armenia and Sophia in Georgia. Both ladies were intelligent and friendly, and everything flowed smoothly which made the trip a nice experience.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for some long days in the bus and be prepared to see many churches and monasteries along the way. The scenery is nice, and I never grew tired of looking at it.

This extension is very expensive considering its short duration

The extension is really for less that 48 hours, but it’s advertised for 3-4 days. Day 1 is entirely still in Georgia. The train ride certainly isn’t an efficient way to travel between Tbilisi and Baku and involved a 2 hour stop at the border, an hour on each side, and that included stern passport/immigration people and a search of our luggage. We arrived in Baku at 9:30 am on Day 2. Baku and the surrounding areas are very nice, and we saw many things during Days 2 and 3. Our group included 10 people. Of the 10, 8 of us had flights shortly after 4am on Day 4, and that included the main group flight. Accordingly, it’s not really a 4 day extension as we were in Baku for under 48 hours. The extension is very expensive and I’d advise other travelers to avoid it and to travel to Baku with another option.

Most Inspirational Moment

Baku has a nice mixture of old and new architecture.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was helpful and provided us with much information.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Baku is safe and would be easy for independent travel. I'd suggest doing that as the extension to the Armenia/Georgia trip is grossly overpriced for such a short time period.

Brilliant wildlife trip

Tremendous trip for wildlife. Great photographic opportunities every day – very varied.

Most Inspirational Moment

Humpbacks repeatedly breeching next to our boat

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get up early to enjoy sunrise and the early morning birdlife. And have a camera with good low light capabilities

Breathtaking Bhutan

This is a trip of a lifetime to the most beautiful place on the earth. Such beauty from the people, the environment, the culture and from the expert care of the team who show you their fantastic country.

Most Inspirational Moment

We were lucky enough to go on the Thimphu Festival departure - and were even luckier to get to the Gangtey Monastery to see the festival up in the glacial valley - it was spectacular! To have been able to see the festival in Thimphu, to learn and understand more about the culture - to then be lucky enough to experience another festival high in the mountains was just a magical and beautiful occasion - we then walked through the valley back to the hotel. This was the best experience during the trip, but a trip of epic experiences, included of course was the walk to the Tigress Nest Monastery, all of the Dzong's which I adored and just learning and seeing this great country.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Kemey was wonderful. Patient, knowledgable, flexible and very very kind. He made the trip for all of us, he packed the days with so many activities and made sure we had everything we needed. Thank you Kemey for showing us the heart of Bhutan.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The September trip was certainly not cold in any way - so don't pack too many warm clothes, instead take lots of layers as you move from high passes to tropical valleys in the same day. Change more money than you think you need at the start, there is very little opportunity to do this during the trip (or if you do the rate is very bad). Sit back and enjoy the spectacular scenery - the team will take care of you.
