Two fantastic weeks

My trip lasted two weeks. The first week was grade 4 with Michele. The second was grades 3 and 4 with Michele and Alex.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were many enjoyable moments over the two weeks. Probably the most inspirational was skiing from the top of Prato Piazza to the bottom of it. The conditions were the best I've experienced there.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Michele and Alex are both excellent leaders with different personalities. This is one of the things that makes a two week trip really interesting. I spent the first week with Michele and most of the second week with Alex who was doing the grade 3. With both of the weeks being high grades the teaching was rightly limited and appropriate. This was done really well as you expect with Exodus.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Try it! If you're new to cross country skiing go on a grade 1or grade 1 and 2. The teaching you'll receive will be appropriate for your lack of experience and you will develop skills over the week and be ready to book another trip. Even if you're at a beginner grade you need to ensure that you have a decent fitness level. You don't need a heavy skiing jacket. You should bring layers you can take of and put on during the day. Merino base layers are ideal.

Atlas Descent!

Excellent Adventure!

Wonderful walking trip

This was our first organised walking trip. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time with such an interesting group of people who were great company – they were inspiring and entertaining! The walks were accurately described in terms of difficulty and the scenery was stunning. Hotel Due Torri staff made us feel welcome and served us delicious, home cooked , authentic Italian food. The guides who led us up Vesuvius and round Pompeii were knowledgeable but imparted their knowledge in an interesting way, adding humour to their commentary. Our main guide, Veriano, who accompanied us every day was superb.

Most Inspirational Moment

Being taken to Veriano’s special places which were beautiful and serene.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Veriano was born and bred in the area and was therefore passionate about all aspects of our trip, from the stunning scenery to the local customs.. His extensive knowledge and great sense of humour made the trip informative and enjoyable. He was very patient when some of us occasionally struggled to keep up and was very encouraging. We were all sad to leave on the last day!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Read the trip info carefully. Take plenty of cash for tips. Check flight details up until the day of departure in case the departure terminal has changed - you will not automatically be notified by text or email.

Amazing

My first trip with Exodus. Was a wonderful experience, great guides led by Adberrahim and Hassan, everything ran smoothly through punctures and break downs. The trip was really well worked out, fantastic views, different scenery, exhilarating fast descents and lug busting climbs (far more descents than climbs) A great week with a wonderful bunch of like minded people.

Most Inspirational Moment

Flying down a long 25km descent at break neck speeds!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Wonderful, kind, friendly engaging and happy to answer any questions

Advice for Potential Travellers

just do it! don't eat Tagine for a while before!

Nile Cruise

I very much enjoyed the trip but the word “leisurely” is completely misleading. Fortunately I’d read the reviews first. A couple of things that could have been improved: (1) the Abu Simbel trip. We left the boat at 4am, drove 4.5 hrs (not 3.5), spent 2 hrs at the temples and then drove 4.5 hrs back for “lunch” at 3pm. We had no free time at the temples. It would have been much nicer to have time for a coffee, a walk by the lake or a look at the souvenir stalls, then got back for dinnertime. The breakfast boxes were enormous and would have lasted all day. (2) Day 7: we left the hotel at 7am, visited Philae Temple, Aswan Dam, the stone quarry and a perfume shop, again returning to the hotel for a very late lunch. It would have been much better to have lunch after the dam visit, either at the hotel or from boxes. We felt in a permanent state of hunger and exhaustion!

Most Inspirational Moment

I don't know that there was one. There were many enjoyable and "wow" moments.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Abdul was very knowledgeable, always organised and did his best for us.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't imagine you'll have either the Nile or the historic sites to yourselves. You will always be part of a cavalcade of coaches, a flotilla of boats or a throng of tourists. The interiors of some of the temples are so crowded that many of us didn't go into the sanctuaries because of people pushing and shoving. Once you accept this however, just stand back and enjoy the magnificent sites and river views. On the last day we asked our guide if a visit to the botanical garden on Kitchener's Island could be included in the felucca trip. Everyone enjoyed this.

A great Italian coastal walking holiday

Stayed in the excellent family run Hotel Due Torri – lovely meals and friendly cookery demonstrations. Meals were lovely – food intolerances well catered for. Comfortable rooms, warm. Bomerano was good to walk from to Amalfi, Ravello and Positano. A thoroughly enjoyable holiday for us – first time with Exodus and being in a group; we woud definitely consider going with Exodus again.

Most Inspirational Moment

So many inspirational moments : the views; the other people in our group; the Italian food; the Path of the Gods; the trips to Vesuvius and Pompeii: I even inspired myself by keeping up with the walking and getting over leg aches and a blister.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Veriano was an affable guide whose local knowledge certainly added value to the trip - we found out more about local history, cuisine, nature and geology on the trips - just the right amount of information. Veriano did all he could to keep us safe, give clear information, good organisation and help everyone find what they wanted to do on the free day. He helped the group to gel and we appreciated his guiding.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Walk down lots of steps before you go and be prepared for steep and rocky paths.

Nile cruise

Fantastic holiday with an outstanding guide, although the booking process left a lot to be desired.

Most Inspirational Moment

Going inside one of the pyramids.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fantastic. Encyclopaedic amount of knowledge. Imparted to us in an enthusiastic way that was easy to understand. He got us to the front of the queues and managed to keep us all together.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Can be cold at night.

Amazing trip

This is a very active trip and full of different experiences. Max in Head Office provided excellent advice and customer service before the trip. It’s actually a trip of 2 halves. The first week is spent hiking in the Western Ghats, with 4 nights camping. For me, this was probably the highlight. Each hike covered different types of terrain/landscape, and as others have mentionned, you need to be reasonably fit. But don’t worry if you don’t feel up to a long hike on a given day- you can sometimes do a shorter one or just relax. The guides were fantastic, and they even carried tiffin boxes on the treks for us to enjoy a full lunch ! The food on camp was out of this world- seriously some of the best food I’ve eaten in my life, creatively prepared by the executive chef and his small team in the middle of nowhere. Unbelievable! The second week is more of a sightseeing extravaganza, with several long 5/6 hour coach rides, as per the itinerary.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking to the top of Mt Meesapulimala Madurai - to experience the buzz and frenetic pace of a big Indian city, as well as the temple of course! The kindness and hard work of all the staff involved. They all went above and beyond what was required in so many ways to make this trip truly enjoyable and memorable.

Thoughts on Group Leader

San was the best group leader ever! He made sure everything went smoothly, sorted out any problems and entertained us with his knowledge of Kerala and India in general, along with personal anecdotes around campfire !

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take everything on the trip note list, but also a 3 pin round plug adaptor for India, and some eco baby wipes plus small soap bars for camping. Make sure you sanitise your hands after you've touched anything and everything (money, seats, toilet handles/doors etc) - that way you'll minimise the risk of getting tummy problems! The water on the coach is filtered, and at camp is always boiled, so fine to drink, but otherwise use a water filter, even for hotel water. I bought a Grayl Geopress which I used all the time and never got sick. If you are unhappy about anything, don't keep it to yourself-just talk to San and he will do his utmost to fix the problem. The hotel accommodation ranges from really good to a bit basic- we only asked to change rooms once. The toilets for 2 of the night camps were holes in the ground within a tall square tent and soil to shovel over the contents-great to get back to nature! If you want to change money once you arrive at the airport, you'll need to take cash. For £200, the commision was around 2% .Otherwise,San will take you/direct you to the nearest working ATM. As we hadn't booked the group flight, we also used the pre paid taxi service which worked well- even at 4 am- and cards are accepted for this service.

Excellent ride and scenery and great guides but very cliquey groups

What prompted me to write was returning from another excellent trip with a different company where the group was constructive and the guides understood the needs of the group. The Porto to Lisbon ride with Exodus was rather different. There were several couples who were delightful but went off on their own at dinner. The other folk who were travelling on their own quickly formed a clique leaving out one woman and me. Some nights we eat on our own and other nights we went out together. The guide and the driver though good at their jobs chose not to go out to eat and didn’t understand Group process. I’d happily go on another exodus trip where the group eats out together like the other company I often go away with.

Most Inspirational Moment

Beautiful scenery and the Portuguese are very kind and friendly.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Great but didn’t understand Group process.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Even if you are a friendly person you may find yourself excluded if the group is cliquey.

Reply from Exodus

We’re grateful for Cathy for taking the time to leave a review, and are glad to read that she enjoyed cycling across beautiful Portugal. However, we are sorry to hear that she didn’t feel her group gelled as well as she had hoped; while from our experience our trips attract like-minded, sociable travellers who bond during the time they spend together, and we find that Cathy’s experience is a rare one, we do regret that she felt this way during the trip. We would like to mention that on all our trips, our groups go out to dinner together on most nights accompanied by their tour leader, though on some days we leave the evening free for travellers to make their own arrangements if they like, with their leader’s help. We are confident that Cathy would have a much more positive trip if she travelled with us again, but we have taken her comments on board, and have spoken to our local team to remind our leaders to facilitate a sociable atmosphere within our groups as best they can, and to provide support if necessary.

The title says it all

We arrived in Port Elizabeth and meet our tour leader., Andrew Lindsay. He was excellent, made everyone feel welcome and gave us a brief overview of our trip. During the next 11 days we had a great adventure. Starting with Addo Elephant park, followed by a superb Safari organised by Andrew. Everything during the trip was very well organised, Hermanus, Stellenbosch, Cape Town, Table Mountain, Robben Island, staying at some lovely places and having the knowledge of a South African guide was incredible. If I have any criticism, is that some of the accommodation was probably not 3/4 star as suggested. However, due to the enthusiasm and positivity of Andrew the holiday was a wonderful experience of South Africa’s Garden Route.

Most Inspirational Moment

The safari was probably my most inspirational moment of the trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andrew Lindsay was excellent, very knowledgable, patient, organised and enthusiastic.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack light, take binoculars, take every opportunity available.
