Jordan

We spent a week travel around this beautiful country and learnt an incredible amount.

Most Inspirational Moment

Every day was a highlight but eating in two Jordanian households has to be above everything. We felt hugely privileged to be able to see the lives of local people. The whole country is an inspiration with fabulous historical sites, friendly people, stunning scenery and excellent food.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Muayad Mismar is such an inspiring leader. He has great knowledge, a passion for his country and its people , energy and fabulous interaction with both us and local people. Simply one of the best.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don’t worry about security. Jordan is extremely safe and we never worried for even a second.

I am so glad I went.

An outstanding week

This was my first holiday with Exodus, and what an amazing experience! From the very first moment when we walked around Amman and ate freshly cooked falafel in freshly cooked bread for lunch – our adventure started. The incredible sights, the sounds, the overwhelmingly hospitable people, the fascinating history – every day was different and a new adventure.

Most Inspirational Moment

The best experience was having a home cooked meal in Fatima’s house (upside down meal) in Petra. Such an inspiring lady, beautiful food, with added touches of henna on your hand, and learning to write your name in Arabic.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Muayad was a wonderful tour guide. He was authentic and so hospitable. He was a mine of information, passionate about his country and people, he genuinely cared about us a group, and those we encountered in our different experiences along the way. He provided just the best holiday and created memories that I’ll never forget.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just enjoy every day and absorb everything this beautiful country offers you.

Suggestions

Highly recommend Exodus as a tour company - offering holidays that genuinely care for the communities and country that you are visiting. Jordan is an incredible country that needs to be explored and experienced!

One of the best experiences of my life!

Jordan and Petra in particular has been on my bucket list for a while and this trip did not disappoint. I was blessed to be a part of a small group and we all got on so well, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

Most Inspirational Moment

Too many, though the two days we spent in a nearly-empty Petra were just breath-taking. If you can make it up to Monastery and/or the High Place of Sacrifice you will be well rewarded with stunning scenery along the way. The High Place of Sacrifice is a slightly easier climb, and the long walk down through the Wadi was spectacular. Nothing really beats the feeling of anticipation walking down the deserted Siq and seeing the Treasury peak out from behind the canyon. The preservation of Jerash was incredible, exploring was a close second to Petra.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We were a small but lively group and Mikhled did an amazing job keeping us all entertained and happy. He went out of his way to answer our questions and showed us loads of historic images about how the sites we had visited were discovered. He kept us organised with all the different trip options, which was no mean feat. I'd love to go on this trip again but would have to guarantee Mikhled was the leader.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack a small bag for the transfer into Wadi Rum as your suitcase won't be going with you, and if you are a winter departure pack layers! Also another small bag with swimming gear for Aqaba as you'll go straight from Wadi Rum to the Read Sea resort. It's a action-packed itinerary, so just embrace it and sleep either on the mini or back home. I did all the optional extras - Petra by Night, Little Petra, camel rides in Wadi Rum, snorkelling in Aqaba and Bethany-by-the-Jordan and do not regret a single thing. Jordan is not a cheap country but doing all these really added to my enjoyment of the trip and the experience as a whole.

Suggestions

Just go. Jordan is safe, despite everything happening in surrounding countries. The people are kind, humble, welcoming and eager to show off their country. The food was amazing (coming from a notoriously fussy eater) and there's something for everyone. The whole trip was such an incredible experience, I've tried my best to put it into words but can't really do it justice.

The Best Experience

I arrived to Jordan by myself because I booked the tour last minute.
This was my first trip outside of the Uk since my husband passed away at the end of October 2023.

I can’t find the right words to express how this tour has made me feel. I’ve returned home to the Uk a different person to the one who left.

Jordan and its people are truly gifted.
The moment I stepped off the aeroplane the Exodus staff were there, waiting for me. Not for one moment did I feel afraid.
The group I spent the week with will remain friends for life.
The laughter we all shared together daily was not at all expected.
Our guide Mikhled was superb every minute of every day. Knowledgeable and attentive to us all.

Jordan itself is rich in culture and beauty, the sights we visited were stunning.
There wasn’t a single day that passed where I didn’t feel blown away with what I was seeing and learning.

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who loves history, culture and being alive.

The bus journeys were also easy and very comfortable. I suffer with lower back problems but this was also very manageable for me.

Most Inspirational Moment

I accidently dropped my purse in a taxi. I didn't even know I'd lost it until the hotel staff in Petra called my room to tell me the taxi driver had returned it. The people in Jordan are the most honest, genuine people you could ever wish to meet. This was very inspiring to me.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Open your heart

Suggestions

Not only am I recently bereaved with my husband passing away, I also have issues with my lower back. Unfortunately for me this flared up whilst I was on the tour. My guide Mikhled took extra care of me making sure this did not affect my experience in any way during my time. I can't express how heart warming this made me feel. Thank you Exodus. You clearly employ very good people.

Jordan - a country not to be missed!

A most memorable trip discovering Jordan’s sites, people and culture with an excellent guide and great company

Most Inspirational Moment

It’s truly difficult to pick out one most inspiring moment when there was one on each day but the walk up to the Place of High Sacrifice in Petra was certainly one - a quieter backwater with stunning views and places to explore

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mikhled was a very knowledgeable guide with great people skills - very personable with a great sense of humour and the patience of a saint.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Layers of clothing essential for a February trip and a walking pole for Petra is incredibly useful

Suggestions

Jordan is a fabulous country, full of contrasts and its people are warm and engaging. It felt like a very safe place to be. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Jordan is a must

This was our first trip with Exodus & our first group tour. It was an exceptional holiday

Most Inspirational Moment

The arrival at The Treasury in Petra from the Siq (Path into Petra)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mikhled our group leader was an inspirational guide & together with our fellow travellers made the trip very special

Advice for Potential Travellers

Hope that Mikhled is your guide. Do all of the additional optional trips within the holiday to enhance the experience. There is time to sleep when you get back home 😎. The Jordanian people were very welcoming and I would urge others to take this tour. They deserve our patronage particularly at this difficult time for the Middle East. I felt very safe, in fact much safer than in certain cities back in Europe

Suggestions

The experience with Exodus exceeded our expectations and I would definitely recommend this trip & Exodus to others

Absolutely Amazing!!!

Our family of four (2 adults, 2 teens) had the most incredible adventure in Jordan, which was our first Exodus tour. This was a full-on week but the itinerary was carefully and thoughtfully planned out so no day was too much or too little of anything. Overall, it was a fantastic balance of sight-seeing, driving, walking, hiking, exploring, listening to history, free time, eating!!, visiting tourist spots, and going off the beaten trail. Our whole family highly recommends visiting Jordan and this tour!

Most Inspirational Moment

Every day was inspirational and 'the best day ever' but these rated the highest: 1.Eating at Ali Baba's 2.Petra 3.Wadi Rum (desert night) 4. Dead Sea 5. The food, I had no idea what an eating extravaganza this was going to be!

Thoughts on Group Leader

We lucked out having Ibrahim, who is a truly talented group leader. In addition to his past careers / 20+ years as a guide, he is also very well traveled himself and this combination gives him fantastic skills in being able to patiently and effectively deal with and understand all the different personalities / cultures you may have in your group. He has a unique skill of anticipating questions or situations and handles them in a very diplomatic and professional way. He has a great sense of humour too! Ibrahim communicates very clearly and gives enough info as needed. He constantly encourages questions and loves conversation. He also does not push anything on you but informs you and lets you make your own decisions (ex: buying extra excursions or buying anything in the markets). What we noticed and appreciated was that he called us travellers, not tourists. * I am GF so brought myself some crackers and snacks to have (just in case). I told Ibrahim I was GF to make sure there would be rice available and he went to a specialty shop and bought me GF pita bread so I could enjoy all the mezze (dips) we'd be having all week. So thoughtful of him!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

I read lots of the reviews / tips before we went and here are a few things I would like to pass along: 1. We were very fortunate with wonderful weather in Dec/Jan but it could be a gamble (bring layers for this time of year) 2. If you are wondering if you are 'fit enough' to walk to the monastery it is good to know that your group leader leaves you at this point and you do this part of the trek/hike independently so you can easily go at your own pace. Our group of 10 were of all ages and fitness abilities so we broke off into smaller groups and everyone reached the monastery 3. No need to pre-order a 'lunch box' during the day in Petra, the restaurant that provides it is right there before you go up to the monastery and you can order off their menu 4. Bring cat / dog treats (I am so glad we did!) 5. Bring a small gift for the host dinner family (we gave a bag of British chocolates to the kids. Wish I brought stickers and a few little trinkets for the kids) 6. We did not need the towels we brought but if you have space bring them just incase 7. Bring water shoes other than flip flops / we had tevas and they were fine (ones that stay on your feet) 8. Bring sunscreen, hat, sunglasses even in winter 9. We used a mix of local currency and credit card. We brought dollars but did not need them. We could not get money at LHR so got it upon arrival at the airport. You can also get money at the hotel or at a local bank. 10. We brought some snacks but you have plenty of opportunities to get snacks along the way

Go to Jordan, you will not regret it!

Epic!

I absolutely loved this trip. The country, the people, the culture, the sites, the food and our guide could not be bettered! Jam packed full of fabulousness!! It was my first Exodus trip, and my first group holiday of this kind, but it won’t be my last. Great mixed group of single travellers and couples who all looked out for each other. Everything was really well organised so I was able to relax and enjoy every minute. It’s a busy trip where you are active all day every day but there’s nothing too taxing and plenty of choice with optional stuff so you can wind it up or down to suit. I chose to do everything because it was all so fab! Jerash, Petra and Wadi Rum are spectacular. I recommend doing minimal research and allowing these sites to wow you when you get there!

Most Inspirational Moment

A small group of us did the walk up to the high place of sacrifice and back down via wadi Farasah at Petra. One of my favourite ever walks!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Just fabulous! Ibrahim is kind, organised, knowledgeable, interesting, funny and has a deep well of patience for dealing with mixed groups of people with different needs. He is everything you could want in a group leader and more.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I read that you have to wear modest clothing but everywhere we went was very liberal. Best to be respectful but no need to buy anything special. Wear good walking shoes/trainers. Expect to walk a lot at Petra! Remember to take a bag you can put overnight stuff in for the desert (you can’t take your luggage). If you are a softie for dogs and cats, keep some pet treats handy. I bought a local data sim but barely used it - there’s wifi in all the accommodation and in the bus. Everywhere else there was no 4G anyway. Embrace every opportunity and have an amazing time!

Suggestions

Just do it!

Hot!

Went in September 2023 and the temperature was too much to bare. However, Jordan is a must see country. The architecture is mind blowing. All the hotels were comfortable, safe and clean. Vegetarians and Pescatarians are not well catered for. There’s only so much pita bread and baba ghanoush you can eat on a daily basis! Jordan is landlocked so fish is not recommended unless you’re at the Red Sea.

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra - walking along the Siq towards the Treasury, climbing to the High Place.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Not a lot!. Mikhel failed to deliver on many levels. He was barely audible because he spoke so softly yet so fast. He was not very resourceful or creative when it came to food, especially for vegetarians. He though it was acceptable for me to eat a bowl of boiled veg and pita bread whilst the meat eaters tucked into a nice plate of hot food! Mikhel was complacent when it came to recounting the history, politics etc of Jordan. To him, mentioning "there's a field of solar panels to the left" would interest us and yet he didn't extend the story behind why they were there, apart from the obvious. This is just one example of how inspirational he was. I met a couple on the flight home who did the same trip but with Explore and I learnt more from them about Jordan because their tour lead oozed knowledge, unlike Mikhel.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you're thinking of going to Jordan then look at Explore's trip, and they don't charge for transfers if you pay for your own flight! You might want to take a travel kettle.

Suggestions

I highly recommend you look at Explore's trip before making a decision.

Well balanced trip

All the major sites covered, in a well balanced trip to Jordan.

Most Inspirational Moment

The sight of the Treasury at Petra.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mikhled was well organised, knowledgeable and joined in with the good humour within the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The early morning arrival on day 1, can be mitigated by arriving a day earlier
