Is This Trip for You?

The Amalfi Coast is home to some of the best-loved walks in Europe: the varied scenery make this a heaven for hikers and ramblers.

This trip involves four days of walking with low altitude throughout and has an average rating of Activity Level 3 (Moderate). See below for more information on what the trip involves.

  • Duration of walks: Usually between three and six hours including lunch stops. While our expert leaders will ensure the walking pace allows time to rest and enjoy the views, being in good health and fitness is essential to fully enjoy the walking experiences.
  • Terrain and path type: These will vary from paved tracks to forest trails. Some sections involve long staircases, steps, some steep climbs and descents on slightly loose terrain. There will also be some narrow pathways alongside sheer drops, so you’ll need to be comfortable with heights. The walk on Mount Vesuvius is on rocky cinder/gravel trails and likely to be loose underfoot, with steep sections and some large drops. On most days there are considerable sections of steps (more than 1,500), so the walks are best suited to those not suffering from knee and joint problems.
  • Climate: The Amalfi Coast and its surroundings normally benefit from a relatively mild and sunny climate, but heatwaves and heavy rains are frequent during the summer.

Considering all of this, we recommend that you arrive physically prepared to tackle slightly challenging routes by exercising regularly before the trip. You should also bring suitable equipment with you, including sturdy hiking boots and walking poles, and stay hydrated at all times.

If you would like to know more about the difficulty of the walks, speak to your sales representative to discuss the trip in further detail. For more on our trip gradings, visit our Activity Level Guidelines page.

Please note, there is high demand for our Amalfi tours, so it’s likely there will be more than one Exodus group at Due Torri. The hotel is also occasionally open to non-Exodus guests. Nevertheless, our experienced team of leaders is used to this and will tailor itineraries to ensure you enjoy each activity with your own small group. Any additional groups are either on a different tour or follow an alternative itinerary.

Also know that during the high season, usually May to September, popular towns along the Amalfi Coast, such as Positano, Amalfi itself and the island of Capri, can be busy.

Land Only Itinerary

Day 1
Start in the village of Bomerano, Agerola

Enjoy a warm welcome from our local hosts, the Acampora family, who run our base for the week: Hotel Due Torri. If you have time, you may want to get out and explore the village, Bomerano, a quaint retreat high up in the hills and away from the often-busy Amalfi Coast below. Once everyone’s ready, we enjoy a welcome briefing at the hotel – a great chance to get to know the group a little, meet our leader and ask any questions you may have.

Please note: It is possible the order of the itinerary will be changed to ensure the best possible conditions for each activity during the trip. All listed activities and services will be included. Your leader will inform you of any changes locally after assessing conditions.

If you wish to tailor your journey by adding extra nights, speak with your sales representative for detailed information on available pre-tour, post-tour and extension packages.

Meals included: Dinner

Day 2
Visit elegant Ravello, walk across the Dragon Valley and swim in Atrani Beach

Our walk starts in Ravello, a town favoured by the Bloomsbury Set and other artists and intellectuals due to its secluded location and inspirational scenery. Before setting off for the walk, we have free time to explore the town and visit Villa Cimbrone or Villa Rufolo with their meticulously landscaped gardens and breathtaking sea views (optional). The route today is mostly downhill but does include a considerable number of steps. After descending across the Dragon Valley, we follow a stream until reaching the coastal village of Atrani for a refreshing dip before ending the walk in Amalfi.

Distance covered: 3mi (5km)

Ascent: 98ft (30m); Descent: 1,266ft (386m); Activity hours: 3

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3
Cable car ride and scenic walk on Mount Faito; free time in Sorrento

Today we visit Castellammare di Stabia, a seaside town popular with the local people. A spectacular 10-minute cable car journey takes us to the summit of Mount Faito (3,710ft/1,131m), a peak in the Lattari Mountains, where we can enjoy views over the Sorrento Peninsula, Gulf of Naples and Vesuvius.

We then take a route known as the Trail of the Angel to the Monastery of San Michele. It’s a gentle, gradual ascent crossing rocky limestone sections and shade-giving beech forests. Along the way, we pass old ice houses known as neviere. These were once used to store snow through  summer before it was sold to wealthy Neapolitans, who would use it to chill their drinks and food. We then enjoy a packed lunch before taking the same path back to Castellammare, where we catch the 20-minute train to Sorrento. The afternoon is free for sightseeing

In the event of adverse weather conditions such as strong winds or cable-car running services limitations, the daily schedule may require to be adjusted. Your tour leader will be arranging alternative activities in the area.

Distance covered: 4mi (7km)

Ascent: 640ft (195m); Descent: 640ft (195m); Activity hours: 4

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4
Drive to Mount Vesuvius, take an optional walk up its vast crater, admire the Bay of Naples and visit the fascinating ruins of Pompeii

Transfer to the slopes of Vesuvius to view the volcanic crater, which also overlooks the beautiful Bay of Naples, the waters of which span between Naples, the regional capital, and Sorrento, the town famed for lemon groves. Depending on weather conditions, we will join an expert volcanologist on an extended walk around the caldera and beyond.

After lunch, we travel by bus to Pompeii. On the lower foothills of the volcano dominating the Gulf, Pompeii was a thriving port town until Vesuvius catastrophically erupted over two days in 79 CE and the city was buried in ash and pumice. Lost for 1,700 years, it is now a Unesco World Heritage site,  the perfectly preserved remains providing an amazing insight into life in a Roman city, complete with bathhouses, bakeries and homes – some of which still have walls adorned with detailed frescoes. We will  explore the site this afternoon accompanied by a local guide.

Distance covered: 2mi (4km)

Ascent: 820ft (250m); Descent: 928ft (283m); Activity hours: 3

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5
Walk a section of the 'Path of The Gods'; afternoon to relax at Conca Dei Marini beach

Leaving the hotel, we have a short stroll through Bomerano before we join the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods), one of the finest walking trails on the planet. It follows rolling hills, the contours of the land and the coast, providing highly evocative views as we goragged cliffs speckled with tiny villages and extensive vistas over the sparkling Mediterranean. The trail is broken by insights into local life, passing shepherd huts and ancient houses carved into the limestone. We can admire Positano from the last viewpoint before returning to Bomerano, where we are transferred to Conca Dei Marini (30 minutes) by private bus. The afternoon is free to relax in this idyllic bay, which is quieter than most on the Amalfi Coast and away from the usual tourist crowds.

Please note: Some parts of the trail today are rocky and there are frequent ups and downs, which can be a little hard on the knees. With breaks for water and snacks, this hike is of Activity Level 3 (Moderate) difficulty but doable for all those in good fitness. The challenge will no doubt be repaid by the magnificent views.

Distance covered: 5mi (8km)

Ascent: 656ft (200m); Descent: 656ft (200m); Activity hours: 3.5

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6
Free day to relax or take a boat to Capri, visit Naples or Herculaneum (all optional)

Enjoy a day at leisure to relax at the hotel or go to the seafront. The hotel also offers a range of private transfers to some of the most popular attractions in the region. Options include visiting Herculaneum, which was also destroyed during the Vesuvius eruption. The city was buried in mud rather than ash; some say this led to the site being even better preserved than the bigger Pompeii. You might instead choose to take a ferry to the chic island of Capri and the funicular through lemon groves up to Capri town. Furthermore, Sorrento or the National Archaeological Museum of Naples are also possible.

Please note, all these optional excursions are subject to availability and payable locally (activity prices are dependent on the number of people joining). The tour leader will assist you with bookings and arrangements. Alternatively, spend the day by the pool or in true Italian style in a cafe, sipping espresso and watching the world pass.

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7
Wander through the hidden streets of Amalfi and explore picture-perfect Positano; try locally made mozzarella

Leaving the Agerola Plain, we descend by private bus to Amalfi, the oldest maritime republic in Italy. Quintessentially Mediterranean, Amalfi is a cluster of little white houses, buildings and shady porticoes, dominated by a large cathedral with brightly coloured tiles typical of the region. We wander through hidden narrow alleys and sun-filled piazzas, before continuing by fast boat (approximately 20 minutes) to Positano.

En route, we enjoy enchanting views of sheer cliffs and rugged shoreline dotted with small beaches. There is no better way of approaching Positano than from the sea the contrast of this colourful, near-vertical town against the verdant cliffs and blue waters will leave you mesmerised. We have a few hours to explore this chic, picture-perfect village on foot before we return to our hotel in the late afternoon by boat and private bus.

Distance covered: 3mi (5km)

Ascent: 328ft (100m); Descent: 328ft (100m); Activity hours: 2.5

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 8
End Bomerano, Agerola

This morning marks our last breakfast at the hotel, which may feel more like a second home by now. If your flight leaves later this evening, you’re welcome to make use of the hotel facilities after check-out and enjoy an optional lunch here. Alternatively, speak to your leader for recommendations on what to do in the village.

Meals included: Breakfast

Few capitals can boast quite the collection of attractions, from the mighty Colosseum, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, to the Trevi Fountain and Roman Forum. It also has more than 900 churches, about 2,000 fountains and enough museums and galleries to keep you busy for a lifetime. This extension includes two nights at either a three- or four-star hotel (it’s your choice!) and a one-hour guided city tour with an English-speaking guide, which takes you on a time-travelling journey through 3,000 years. To book and confirm prices, speak to your sales representative.

Please note: It is possible the order of the itinerary listed above will be changed to ensure the best possible conditions for each activity during the trip. All listed activities and services will be included. Your leader will inform you of any changes locally after assessing conditions.

Ascents, descents and distances

All ascents, descents and distances listed above have been measured by our local partners or tour leaders, in many cases with satellite-based mapping software. Please note, different GPS measuring devices can give differing results, particularly on winding paths or in mountainous terrain. Measurements stated throughout these trips notes are given to help you understand the types of terrain and distances you will encounter. Timings stated will vary depending on the pace of your group.

Accommodation

Hotel Due Torri, a family-run three-star albergo in Bomerano

Walking The Amalfi Coast – Summer Edition

We spend seven nights at Hotel Due Torri, a mid-sized hotel run by the welcoming Acampora family, who turn out authentic Campanian dishes in the restaurant and put on a show with their fun pizza-making demonstrations.

It sits in Bomerano, a peaceful village that forms part of the Agerola municipality, up in the hills and away from the often-bustling Amalfi Coast.

Being higher up, the hotel benefits from cooler nights, although beaches are not too far away. There is a small heated outdoor pool (usually open from mid-April to mid-October) and energy is generated by a solar panel system.

The 41 rooms vary in style and size and are spread across two main buildings and two cosy apartments a short walk from the main hotel. A limited number of superior rooms, which include a hot tub, power shower and fridge, are also available for a supplement payable before departure. Please ask your sales representative for further information.

Amenities

  • Hydromassage pool for refreshing post-hike dips
  • Buzzy restaurant serving local dishes
  • Limited number of superior rooms available with hot tub

Worth knowing

  • Pool opening dates are subject to local weather conditions and pool maintenance requirements; cooler months may not be suitable for swimming
  • When the hotel is full, you might still be able to join the trip on your preferred date by staying at an alternative accommodation just a short walk from the main hotel. You will be provided with full details upon booking and have full access to all the Due Torri facilities, including the pool and restaurant.
  • A kettle is available in the rooms. Please request tea/coffee bags at reception

Food & Drink

All breakfasts, four packed lunches and six dinners are included.

Breakfast is continental style with a choice of cereals, bread, eggs, ham, cheese, fruits, pastries, yoghurt, orange juice and milk, plus an array of teas/coffee.

Included packed lunches usually consist of a sandwich filled with a choice of cold meats, tuna, or local cheeses.

All evening meals are taken in the hotel, where the standard is excellent and the chef takes great pride in showcasing the best of regional foods, including dishes such as scialatielli all’amalfitana (homemade pasta with seafood) and branzino all’acqua pazza (sea bass in crazy water). Dinners usually consist of four courses, commencing with antipasti, followed by soup and/or pasta, a main meat dish with salad or vegetables, and dessert.

On certain evenings, there is the opportunity to learn how to make Neapolitan pizza. Please note, drinks are not included with meals but available to purchase.

Several dietary restrictions, including vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free and gluten-free, are also well catered for. Please advise us of any dietary requirement on booking.

Transport

Transfers to and from the airport will be in a private vehicle (normally a minibus or coach). On other days, private buses and boats will be used.

Weather & Seasonality

Southern Italy, like much of the Mediterranean, has a hot, dry climate in summer and cooler but sometimes wet spring and autumn periods. Unseasonable cold spells and rain are possible at any time of year, so we recommend bringing some warm clothes, especially useful in Bomerano where evening temperatures can be lower than expected. However, summer can be very hot with daytime temperatures in July and August reaching up to 34C-37C (93F-99F) on the coast. Travellers should be prepared for periods of extreme weather.

Money

Italy's currency: Euros (EUR)

ATM Availability

The nearest ATM and bank to our accommodation is a short walk away. Credit and debit cards are accepted in most shops and restaurants although cash is generally easier. Therefore we recommend obtaining some cash in euros before travelling or on arrival at Naples airport.

Extra Expenses & Spending Money

For lunches not included, you should budget €15-€20, depending on whether you choose a set menu in a cafe or restaurant. Approximately €30-€35 should be enough for an evening meal including drinks.

Local taxes: many Italian cities have introduced a tourist tax for non-residents. The local administration is in charge of the tax, which will be collected by the accommodation provider at check-in or check-out. This fee varies depending on the hotel category, the season, and the number of days of stay. It is usually between €0.50 and €1.50 per person per night. For this trip, please allow approximately €10 for the week. Children and people aged 75 or over are exempt from this tax.

Optional activities payable locally:

  • Return transfers to Herculaneum and Naples on the free day can be arranged locally and cost approximately €40-€80 per person, depending on group size.
  • Return boat to Capri: approximately €40 slow boat, €50 hydrofoil (seasonal and depending on weather/sea conditions)
  • Capri cable car: €12 return
  • Herculaneum: entrance fee to archeological site €13; audio-tour €6.50; local guide €10 per person
  • Ravello: Villa Cimbrone entrance fee €10 / Villa Rufolo entrance fee €7
  • Amalfi: entrance fee to the Cathedral €3
  • National Archaeological Museum of Naples entrance fee €22

Tipping

Although optional, a tip for the leader at the end of the trip is greatly appreciated. As a guideline, we recommend a contribution of €20 per client per leader. It is also customary to tip private bus drivers (please allow approximately €12 per person for the week). Groups normally like to show their appreciation for hotel staff by leaving a tip at the end of their stay. We recommend a contribution of approximately €15 per person for the local staff at the hotel.

People, Places & Planet

We work hard to create trips that have a positive impact on the people and places we visit and look after the planet we explore. Learn more about our sustainable travel ethos and practice here and find out about the work of the Exodus Travels Foundation here.

Some sustainable travel highlights of this trip include:

People

How this trip helps improve life for local communities.

  • Local guides keep you well informed about local traditions and cultural-social sensitivities.
  • This trip brings income and opportunity to the destination community through the inclusion of locally owned hotels, restaurants, and other enterprises, and by championing locally produced food wherever possible.
  • We spend the week in the family-run Hotel Le Due Torri in Agerola, a relatively unknown area of Amalfi, so our guests are providing income to an area that does not usually benefit from tourism.
  • Guests often have the opportunity to learn from their hosts how to prepare a traditional Neapolitan pizza which is a great cultural experience.
  • During this trip we visit a local mozzarella factory and all money spent here goes directly to supporting and maintaining this very traditional family business.
  • Read more about our other initiatives

Places

How this trip helps protect and conserve local landscapes and nature.

  • By travelling in a small group we ‘tread lightly’ to minimise our impact on local resources and the environment.
  • We work with our partners on the ground to proactively reduce waste; this includes eliminating all single-use plastic water bottles by providing refills for reusable bottles.
  • Erosion on and adjacent to popular paths is a growing problem and our trip leaders encourage clients not to stray from paths to minimise this.
  • We rewild 100 square metres per passenger to compensate for all trip and flight emissions.
  • Read about our commitment to nature protection and restoration here, including our rewilding commitment for every customer who travels with us.

Planet

How we seek to keep the carbon footprint of this trip low.

  • Accommodation and restaurants in the itinerary use locally sourced food which has not been transported long distances.
  • The Hotel Le Due Torri has installed solar panels which provides hot water for all rooms all year round.
  • Walking trips like this have very little detrimental impact on the environment and the locals, as it is a quiet, low impact activity requiring comparatively few resources to support.
  • Read about our climate action here, including our carbon reduction and compensation commitments.

Tips for sustainable travel on this trip

  • Leave no trace: we do all we can to ensure we leave no rubbish in the wild and beautiful places we visit; we ask that you do the same. If there are no recycling facilities in-country, consider bringing recyclable materials home with you.
  • Plastic waste reduction: please bring a reusable water bottle on this trip, also consider avoiding single-use hotel toiletries, which generate a large amount of plastic waste.
