Brilliant and challenging

Wonderful trip. Amazing trekking. Superb guide (Tomas). Friendly group. Expensive but worth it.

Most Inspirational Moment

The W trek in Chile

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent. Great fun. He really likes people.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Try not to take too much stuff. You have to carry it all for some of the time.

great holiday with fantastic scenery

I did this trip October 2022. It was great fun, with amazing views and interesting cycling. There were 2 long tarmac downhills which were exhilerating. I took the bus rather than do the long steep dirt road section over the border crosing – the other 7 in our group all managed that uphill, but the bus followed the same route. Our guides were great; father and two sons team, as well as the yellow school bus. I was very glad I took walking boots for the two free days, (volcano climb and ski resort climb near Bariloche) although more sure footed people could have done it in trainers. Food was very good; hotels a mix of quirky and luxurious. Do not miss the chocolate factory in Bariloche. We had a very sociable group, lubricated with local wines and beers. Bring your best camera and cycling shorts.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Great trip for all aged kids and teanagers

Nice trip

We had a most excellent guide in Andrew who was very knowledgeable and experienced. This trip offers many of the highlights along the Nile.

Most Inspirational Moment

Nefertiti's tomb well worth the price. The Valley of the Queens is a must-see. Seeing the Pyramids at last.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Amazing. I'd follow him anywhere.

Advice for Potential Travellers

December is colder than you think. I felt safe everywhere. Stock up on provisions if lunch isn't provided. 3 days in Cairo in an outlying hotel is a weak spot in the itinerary. Uber works well for getting around on your own, nothing is walkable from Giza Pyramids Hotel.

Petra and Wadi Rum by bike

I very much enjoyed the program. It kept us busy and engaged. Jordan has a fascinating history and spectacular scenery. It would have helped if your trip notes had been more relevant to the season. Many people were not fully prepared for the cold (which was as low as 1 degree) and the rain (there were floods). Jordan has a well documented 40 days of winter which begins somewhere around December 21st (can up to 10 days earlier) and ends early to mid February. During this time there are storms and very low temperatures. I know this as I have been to Lebanon in the winter but Dezlin was unaware of this, and when I asked her to call the guide to check the validity of the ‘packing list’ she claimed that due to ‘global warming’ the weather was unpredictable. This is not the case. It is always winter in Jordan at this time of year ! She did call the guide who confirmed that it was cold, but many in our group were not informed. Petra flooded the day after we visited. This s not unusual during the 40 days of winter.

Most Inspirational Moment

1. Being in Petra with our guide on Christmas eve and Christmas day: dinner with the family, Turkish bath, free time to walk up to the sacrificial site 2. Our days and nights in the desert 3. Tour of Jeresh 4. Beach morning - cool but sunny I liked it all except the hotel on the first and last nights which is AWFUL. Why on earth would you book people into an hotel with a NIGHT CLUB in the basement ????? We arrived very late on our first night and NO ONE slept. Please change this as friends have asked me if I would recommend this trip and I have said no on this basis. People were exhausted on the first official day of the tour.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide was good humored, knowledgeable and experienced. He knows how to manage his country and was able to navigate the general chaos. He had a great deal to manage and did very well under the circumstances. Our group was was not easy . The weather was challenging which meant that we couldn't cycle as planned, and because there are few roads in Jordan, there were limited options when change was needed ,so we ended up cycling on very busy roads with a police escort just to fill in time. Some people complained about this. They also complained that they couldn't ride ahead of the cycle guide. They didn't seem to understand that it wasn't safe to do that and seemed reluctant to accept that not all countries are safe for cyclists ( which was why the tourist police came with us everywhere we went), and that the drivers in Jordan are reckless and unused to cyclists .

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you go to Jordan in winter insist that EXODUS provides a seasonally relevant packing list so you are prepared for the extremes of temperature which vary from 1 degree and snow to howling gales, thick fog, rain and floods, to 17 degrees and sunny..... You will need, waterproofs, wind-proofs, thin down jackets, base-layers, winter gloves, hats, winter cycle tights, thick socks as well as shorts and swim wear. You really won't need bug spray and hot weather clothing

Very poor guide

Very poor guide. Overall very underwhelming walks – guide very unenthusiastic. Food poor. Accommodation, especially first couple of nights, room smelled damp. Guide left us, in the dark, quite a way out of town. Last few nights, in Matera, room was a cave (what we expected) but it was dirty and bathroom was the size of a small cupboard (used a peg to keep shower head from sliding down). Last day guide left us (night before after a truly crap meal) to find our way to our airport transport bus. Small bus arrived at appointed time. Didn’t know anything about us or Exodus. All above raised with Exodus on our return. They denied everything but offered £50 pp as compensation. As if we’d ever travel with them again. At any cost. This is not a cheap holiday. Be warned.

Most Inspirational Moment

Don't do it again.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Unprofessional

Advice for Potential Travellers

Reply from Exodus

We would like to thank you for the review of your September 2022 trip, Marcelle, although we sincerely regret that your trip experience was not up to standard and that you were so disappointed with the performance of your tour leader. At Exodus, we take great pride in our leaders and recognise the value they add to our trips, which is why they undergo comprehensive training before leading our groups. Whilst we were confident in your leader’s ability to successfully deliver your trip, based on his qualifications, broad knowledge of this part of Italy and previous positive feedback from Exodus clients, we are genuinely sorry to learn that your experience was not so positive and we have, therefore, taken appropriate steps to improve the situation for future groups. The tour leader that led your group will not be participating in Exodus tours in 2023 and we have full confidence that issues such as this will not be encountered again. We are further sorry that one of the hotels you lodged at fell below your expectations, specifically that it was unclean, as this is not the type of feedback we often receive. The Hotel Sassi has hosted our groups for many years, during which time it has garnered generally positive reviews from our clients, which we trust shows why we were confident it would be suitable for you. Nevertheless, we do not wish to downplay your comments and we have, therefore, shared your views with the Sassi’s management team, as we find that they are always receptive to feedback when there is room for improvement. Overall, this is one of our best performing trips, with an average review rating of 4.7*, which we certainly find reassuring. That said, we remain apologetic that you did not receive the holiday you were expecting and that this has discouraged you from travelling with us again.

Nile Cruise

Our guide was excellent. He was extremely knowledgeable, professional, kind and accommodating. The sites and organization of the trip was excellent. Accommodations were Very Good. Food was Very Good. The only objection or criticism is to build in an opportunity for lunch after 4 to 5 hours of site seeing.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was incredibly professional, knowledgeable and accommodating to all guests. 5 Stars.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring Snacks. The itinerary provided prior to the trip is very limited/general. You will be advised of each start time, the afternoon prior. Most meeting times will be from 430 AM (Flight to Luxor) to 6 AM when visiting sites. You should pack food for every day of site seeing because lunch will not be available on most days until approx. 1 PM or 2 PM.

More a journey than a cycle tour

Since we returned, I’ve been thinking about why I love these trips so much and why we, and many of the other people on this one, keep coming back for more. I don’t think it’s the excellence of the cycling because, truth be told, some of it was dull. The attraction is, I think, the experience of travelling in a part of the World you have never seen and the proximity to that which cycling affords; you get up close in a way you don’t on a coach. This is a vast country in a vast continent, and you come away with a sense of that hugeness; we journeyed quiet roads through small villages and towns and never saw another cyclist. Surly looks on South African faces turned to wide grins when we said hallo – clad in lyra we must have seemed to have come from a different planet, and I guess in many ways we did. Others might disagree but I thought the best days were at the beginning and the end – the Golden Gate and Royal Natal National Parks and the glorious ride to the Three Rondavels but all were packed with interest and incident.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling down towards Barberton amidst thunder and lightning and thinking that if I was about to shuffle off this mortal coil that this would be a great way to do it – Adonia pulled the ride before we suffered any actual fatality.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Adonia and Evans were great- not sure how they had the patience to cope with the wide variation in abilities within our group

Advice for Potential Travellers

Not the trip for you if: • You want fine dining and 5* accommodation • If you can’t tolerate bikes with erratic gears and calliper brakes • If you find other people’s company difficult – be warned there is no escape from your fellow guests

Brilliant way to get to know a small country

We’re beginning to think we would never get here – after the pandemic and then the political and economical troubles in Sri Lanka. But we made it – on Exodus’s first excursion for several months!! And it was well worth the wait. I don’t think we could have fitted anything more into our 14 days with easy going and knowledgable guide Roshan and our drivers. A full itinerary, but a relaxing pace and beautiful hotels (don’t really think you need to upgrade unless you are terribly choosy!) A satisfying mix of history, culture, landscape and wildlife and we appreciated the hikes, cycle rides (none of which are taxing if you are moderately fit) boat trips and the exhilarating train journey from the mountains. Although there were western alternatives, the Sri Lankan food on offer at the hotels was delicious, and Roshan often took us to good places for lunch and snacks – missed Rice & Curry when we got home!! Our group of 9 was a pleasant mix of folk who made for entertaining companions. The beach resort was a great place to finish, with the waves rolling in just infront of our hotel. Thank you Exodus for our first long haul trip in many years – we will definitely be signing up for another!

Most Inspirational Moment

I don’t know whether I would call them inspirational, but I thoroughly enjoyed the hikes, cycle rides, boat trips and train rides - making us feel more connected to the country we were visiting. Also being able to take part in the ritual at the Temple of the Tooth, Kandy.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Roshan was calm, knowledgable, funny and kind. We never felt rushed and were often surprised by little gestures - such as lunch at tiny “hotels” and tea & cake in the mountains. He even bought us pink bananas!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

TaKe the strongest Deet you can as the biting insects were ferocious (nothing serious but small and very itchy) Western clothing is fine, just ensure you have a scarf for your shoulders and long skirts & trousers for temple visits.

The Best Trip

Where to begin with all the superlatives of this trip……..from all the details that Exodus takes care of from the moment you step off the plane until the moment you step back on. They’ve thought of it all!! From authentic experiences, the places you visit, and people you meet, it cannot be beat. Each spot we visited was the perfect amount of time to spend at it with plenty of time to explore. If you go on this trip and are lucky to have Amer as your guide, it only enhances an already fantastic experience. His knowledge, passion, personality and fun-loving nature made this a trip I will never forget!

Most Inspirational Moment

Our guide Amer's passion for his country had my attention and was inspiring the entire week

Thoughts on Group Leader

There are not enough good things to say about Amer. He is an asset to his country of Jordan and to Exodus

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for the trip of a lifetime. This is a magical place to visit.
