A WEEK IN JORDAN

Jordan is both facinating and welcoming. It was a really enjoyable trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra was amazing, especially at the Monastery and high places. Walking back through the quite candle-lit Siq after the Petra by Night experience was also beautiful. Jerash was impressive and interesting, a much larger and more complete site than I had expected. Riding camels in the Wadi Rum was fun, especially trying to ride 'side-saddle' like the Bedouin!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fine, knowledgable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared to be hot and dusty and climb a lot of steps!  It helps to be physically fit to get the best experience of Petra and climb to all the high places (e.g Monastery, High Place of Sacrifice, above the Royal Tombs to overlook the Treasury) - it is hard work to do it all in two days, especially in the heat, but well worth the effort!

CORSICAN MOUNTAINS & VILLAGES

Corsica is a beautiful island. Well worth a visit.

Most Inspirational Moment

The last day walk around the mountains of Bocagno. Great views and lovely scenery. The swims in the mountain pools were good too, if a little breathtaking!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rudi was a good leader. Organised, sociable, and takes a special prize for getting the group into Ajaccio on our (and his) day off because of a lack of public treansport. A really nice guy.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The walks are not aleways in the mountains, so be prepared for some low level forest walks as well. However, Corsica is a great place either up or down. The hotel was friendly and provided a goos variety of food-even for the vegetarians.

HIGHLIGHTS OF TURKEY

Fantastic fortnight in Turkey. Saw so much of the country in such a small amount of time, visiting the cost, ruined hill top villages, country retreats, Troy and Ephesus. I found it very interesting and certainly showed me the hidden country that you don’t always see on the ‘normal’ beach holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

The best part of the trip was the balloon ride in Cappodocia, which was such an incredible experience as there were around 30 balloons in the air that day. We saw the amasing sights of the volcanic landscape from a privledged point of view, and I really enjoyed it. But learning about the history of the ancient ruins and seeing these mystical places was also an inspiration for me, which Termessos captured effortlessly in its secluded magnificence.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Phylis was incredibly knowledgable about the sites, reciting the history from memory. She is a good guide

Advice for Potential Travellers

I think this is a good trip to go on, and certainly shows you so many different aspects of Turkey which you weren't expecting. You are a long time on the coach at times, but that is the price you have to pay for seeing so much of the country- and it is worth paying. Turkey has so much history and so many different aspects, which this trip gives a good snap shot of.

WALKING IN MADEIRA

Madeira is a beautiful island, with a profusion of wonderful plant life and we had the benefit of a Madeiran leader who was passionate about his home country. The walks were probably on the A/B grade, rather than B, being a little short and not as strenuous as expected following a grade B holiday the previous year (unless I was just fitter!)

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking along the levada, albeit on a rainy day, was a definite highlight. The feat of engineering, creating the irrigation channels and paths on the side of near-vertical mountain slopes, was impressive. Add to that the abundant and lush greenery and it was a visual feast. The farmers' market in Funchal was another stunning visual feast - the sight of the produce and also the fine architecture. We were offered tasters of six different kinds of passion fruit.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Bruno was an enthusiastic and careful leader, so we all felt well cared for and included in the group. He obviously loves his work.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for a variety of weather - as the trek notes say, mountains really do make their own weather.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

A great introduction into a country rich in history. The tour encompassed both archaeology, history, scenery, as well as some days by the sea!

Most Inspirational Moment

Stunning Petra! The size of this city far exceeded my expectations. Seeing the stars at night at Wadi Rum! And lastly but not least, I can float!!! As a non-swimmer I thought I couldn't but in the Dead Sea everyone can!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was very knowledgeable. He was courteous and attentive and helpful. He was always willing to answer any question and was a source of insight into the life of the Jordanians, their politics, and social customs and lifestyle.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Others have advised on taking wet wipes and toilet roll. I would however urge all travellers to take toilet roll with them into the lavatories as they seldom have any, and you do not want to find this out too late! I would advise caution at the Wadi Rum camp, as I had an upset stomach after eating there. Don't expect anyone to speak fluent English. If you can, it is best to avoid alcohol I feel as it is clearly disapproved of in Jordan.

WALKING IN TUSCANY

A great week with a great group, lots of walking with some outstanding views. The farmhouse is superb with good food.

Most Inspirational Moment

getting to top of monte prdaoi and looking down on the remnants of the winter snow.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We were so impressed with the leader , the group wrote a song which we delivered with gusto on the last night! To the tune  "my old man,s a dustman"v1OHHHHHSara bull is magicShe has a magic sackShe carries sweeties with herAnd chocky bix to snackShe inspires us with storiesAnd keeps us on the goAnd when shes taking photosIts bums all in a rowv2OHHHHHHSara bull is magicShe simply is the bestShe galloped up the hillsideAnd sometimes let us restShe leads us thru the mountainsAnd picks the berries tooAnd Sara, we,d just like to sayThere,s no one quite  like you!  then big finish.......Sara Bull is magic

Advice for Potential Travellers

Even in summer bring a fleece

THE AMALFI COAST

Well organised, great scenery, great weather but a bit more than ‘leisurely/moderate’.  Lots and lots of steps that caused some people to be very sore.

Most Inspirational Moment

The tiny nature park in the woods above Amalfi with the waterfalls and mosses

Thoughts on Group Leader

Well organised and very helpful

Advice for Potential Travellers

Lots of steps. vast majority down, and some rough sections. Get in training and take poles

AMALFI COAST: POMPEII & PIZZA - FAMILY HOLIDAY

This was our first ‘family type holiday’, and we were not sure what we would think.  However, we should not have worried as from the second we were picked up to when we left we were looked after and entertained.  We would not hesitate to recommend this trip to families of all ages.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Walk of the Gods was a particular highlight.  A really good day out, a nice easy walk, followed by a BBQ at one of the most scenic, rustic places I have ever been.  Good food and great wine (for the adults!!).  We walked on a bit and around each corner there was another view.  Pompeii and Herculaneum were also really good.  We would recommend taking the option of Herculaneum and Ravello on the free day.  Herculaneum offers a different perspective to the 79AD eruption and the views from Ravello were breath taking.  The food in Ravello was great with the owner coming out to make sure we were happy and bringing a little extra something for the kids each time she came out!Tile painting and pizza making were highlights for the kids – who now have their own ‘Pizza Certificate’.  The owners of the hotel took us into the kitchens a few times and showed us their style of cooking.  The kids loved the banging noises they made when making pizzas.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eduardo was like a grandparent to the kids and made sure they were safe and happy.  When we got to the hotel he took them off for a game of football and we relaxed with a glass or two of wine!  A good start to the holiday!  He made the holiday special for the kids and with out his inside knowledge we would have missed a lot of experiences out.  Thank you Eduardo.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go to Herculaneum, you will enjoy it and it takes about 2 to 3 hours to go around with lots of places for shade.Do not be afraid to ask to do different things, if you do not want to spend a few hours on the beach, say so and walk around the town or if you want to spend more time on the beach say so.  It is your holiday and Eduardo will be happy to accommodate you.

WALKING THE GREAT WALL

Fantastic walking, getting to really remote parts of the wall. Some days we didn’t see another tourist.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Simitai section of the wall. Sadly the last part was closed for refurb, but even just viewing it was amazing. Most unexpected/amusing: having walked all morning in the heat in the middle of no-where without seeing another person we spotted an elderly Chinese man toiling up the slope ahead of us carrying a large box. When we caught up with him, he had walked up there to sell us ice-cream and beer. We all bought ice-cream, he made a fortune and deserved to!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent! Flexible, positive, always smiling and his lack of perfect English was not particularly an issue.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Great trip for anyone who likes walking off the beaten track. Take a towel and sleeping bag liner!!!

DUBROVNIK & THE DALMATIAN COAST

A relaxing week with plenty of time to slow down and appreciate Croatia’s cultural heritage and coastal scenery.

Most Inspirational Moment

Eating fresh fish while on a boat anchored in a bay off Mljet, after a beautiful walk... Wandering the streets of Dubrovnik

Thoughts on Group Leader

Friendly and helpful; always willing to answer questions.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The walking trails can be quite stony - for that reason, if I were packing again, I'd be taking "proper" walking boots rather than the softer ones I actually took. You can drink the water form the fountains in Dubrovnik, so don't buy bottles there!
