A TASTE OF CUBA

The trip was a present to me from a friend who knew I needed to get away from some severe problems. Cuba is a remarkable country; beautiful, colourful, inspirational and full of happy people who manage to cope despite enormous difficulties. Exodus put together a package which really is ‘A Taste of Cuba’, with an absolutely charming guide and driver who added the icing to the cake! Excellent.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were many inspirational moments in my trip. Seeing a horse drawing a cart with an enormouse sow in it. Meeting a man straight out of east London who had never been out of Cuba, who translated my request to let a tree rat out of its cage, upon which the rat started following me. I think we hit it off - he was so cute. (The rat and the man!) Meeting a sweet old lady on the road who blew me a kiss when I gave her a few coins and a bottle of shampoo. Watching amazing blue fish in a natural woodland pool, and taking photographs of pelicans on the sea wall. Taking photographs of people, animals and buildings in general; the sheer vibrancy of it all.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was a jem. She was very knowledgeable and had studied hard to enable herself to provide information and answers to our questions as we proceeded along the route. She took care of us all and no problem was too much for her. I think above all, she had a fine sense of humour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't over pack! I took warm clothes and waterproof hiking boots which I didn't need. It was always beautifully warm, even when cloudy. Do take insect repellent, sun screen lotion, dark glasses and either a sun hat or an umbrella. An umbrella doubles up for rain, of course, which is useful. If you have room, take ball point pens and small bottles of shampoo, soap and bath gel, etc., as these are things the locals ask for, and which are cheap and small to carry around.Make sure you have lots of small local currency, as tipping is expected just about everywhere; even when taking a photograph of an individual or his car!

CYCLING CUBA

CYCLING CUBA

TRAILS OF NEW ZEALAND

This was the trip of a lifetime for me. If you love walking and the great outdoors but want to challenge yourself with some other activities you may not have tried before and see the wildlife and landscape of this fascinating  country with a bunch of like minded people book this trip you will not be disappointed.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many great times it was difficult to pick out one.  Walking the Tongariro Crossing to the Crater Lakes and climbing Mount Tongariro through amazing volcanic scenery Taking a helicopter ride to the saddle below Ben Lomand above Queenstown and after tea brewed by our guides climbing to the summit on a beautiful day with fantastic views and then a leisurely hike down to the gondolaA Maoiri evening cultural performance and feast followed by sunset walk by hot springs  and a wallow  in thermal pools, Walking in a landscape of bubbling mud pools, yellow sulphur lakes Seeing glow worms in a cave and native birds on Tiritiri Matangi Nature reserve  and on a night nature hike at Zealandia and shooting stars in the Southern night sky Loads of water based activities: jet boating , kayaking, wild water rafting, wild swimming  and boat trips in superb and varied scenery

Thoughts on Group Leader

We were blessed with two group leaders from Adventure South: Stephan and Clark. They really communicates their knowledge of the county, their enthusiasm for their country and their job to our group . They had a lovely rapport between them and they on so many occasions went the extra mile to make our holiday enjoyable for example  sourcing food for my daughter's special gluten free diet, to finding excellent cafes and restaurants  lunches, bathing spots, hikes with freshly brewed tea stops and it was done with humour and professionalism.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you have the time take a few days at either end of the trip to see more of the Auckland area, and North Island and Christchurch. The temperature can be quite varied so take a variety of clothing.Overtrousers would be useful. Several  of the hotels/motels we stayed in had laundry facilities for a small fee. Most of the hotel/motel rooms had a fridge and some had limited cooking facilities so you don't have to eat out every night. There are long drives on some days but with breaks but there are activities every day.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - LEMOSHO ROUTE

The views from Stella and Uhuru Points are just sensational!!

Most Inspirational Moment

Arriving at Stella Point after trekking for 5 1/4 hrs and ascending 1200m to welcome dawn breaking on one side and the moon disappearing on the other; all witnessed by the glaciers there from a long long time ago.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent...a natural-great interpersonal skills and a good leader of a very able and willing supprt team.

Advice for Potential Travellers

DO IT!!! it is one of the most marvellous spots to visit... Do it before it gets too over crowded!!

CUBAN HIGHLIGHTS RIDE

A great country to see from a bike and a great group of people to make it fun!

Most Inspirational Moment

No one single moment but a combination of amazing architecture (albeit crumbling!), great countryside, fantastic old cars, cheap food/cocktails, friendly people and a great bunch of "strangers" to spend a week with. Everything went smoothly and to plan.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tony was extremely knowledgeable about his country's history, politics, economics and geography! So we learnt a lot from him about Cuba. He had a light touch so we could rely on him to be around without him being in our faces. He could advise without ever telling us what to do/not to do.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a comfy chair unless your bum is used to being in the saddle and do a bit a training before you go (I rarely cycle and was glad that I went to the gym a few weeks before!).Take pound notes - they don't accept US dollars!Take a map as it's useful to know here you are in the country. Don't stay in the hotel - get out and see the town especially Trinidad! Its only a short taxi ride away and a lovely place to chill out.Go your own pace and enjoy it.

TRAILS OF VIETNAM

Truly amazing place and well thought out trip, which really does make it feel like you have seen so much of the country. Some truly stunning sights (Halong bay is the second wonder of the world). Hanoi is a complete culture shock and impressive to see how many people can fit onto one moped. Food is very good and for very little you can get some very impressive street food. Only slight complaint not as physical as the itinerary makes it sound.

Most Inspirational Moment

Halong bay was my favourite part of the trip, kayaking from the boat to a lagoon then watching a monkey sitting the rocks eating. Hoi an was a close second with cycling at six in the morning to watch the sunrise over the spice fields (helped by the fact it was snowing in England at the time).

Thoughts on Group Leader

Pheong was a brilliant fella, informative with a deep love of his country, always cheerful and amazingly patient, one morning even giving a meditation lesson for those who were interested and not only all that also a fantastic pool player.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be warned Hanoi and northern Vietnam can be colder than expected, although my trip was in January so maybe I should have been better prepared. Don't overpack you can get your laundry done at lots of different places on the trip. Also shopping is very good out there I bought a north face jacket for 45 dollars which is'nt too bad.

CLASSIC VIETNAM & ANGKOR

Itinerary was perfect and the group leader was fantastic – a lovely guy; each day was truly one adventure after another and I will keep those wonderful memories with me for a long, long time!

Most Inspirational Moment

I loved the bustle of Hanoi (hundreds of scooters), the limestone peaks of Halong Bay and cycling around the surrounding villages of historic Hoi An. Vietnam is a beautiful, lush country and it's people are so friendly. It was lovely to be greeted by local children as we cycled around the villages. We spend New Year in HCM City and it was awesome. I also really enjoyed the wonder of Siem Reap. Cambodians are very humble, friendly people. I wish I'd been there longer than 2 days.

Thoughts on Group Leader

If all the Exodus reps are as passionate about their country as our group leader then I can't wait to do another trip. Thang was knowledgeable, passionate about his work and country and extremely helpful. He put a lot of time and effort into making that we ate at the loveliest restaurants, gave us time to marvel at the awesome sites, made sure our individual needs were met and chivvied us up when we needed it! He was funny and really got involved with the group (he sings very well too)!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take US dollars as you really don't need to take local currency - I took both and it was fun working out the value of their notes but not necessary as everyone converts the cost into dollars if you need them to (you pay individually in all restaurants making it your choice of which currency to use). Definately use insect repellent and anti malaria tablets in CambodiaI completely recommend this trip; I still wake up every day and feel glad that I did it. Thanks Exodus!!

SPICE TRAILS OF KERALA

From begining to end this, my first trip with exodus, was superb.Magnificant scenery, lovely food, great companians, a brilliant tour leader in Ajay and  the guides on the trek were very  helpful especially Mani who helped me overcome, what was for me a particularly tricky ridge.

Most Inspirational Moment

The most inspirational moment of my trip was the Hike in Silent Valley, wonderful scenery and lovely people along the way.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was truly wonderful, very helpful and always ready with a little anecdote and a glimpse into the real lives of the Indian people. Ajay really helped to make this a holiday to remember.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Although this is advertised as a moderate trek, I did find some parts quite hard but with the help of the guides, Mani in particular I enjoyed every moment.

SNOWSHOEING IN THE DOLOMITES

A fantastic way to see the area in the snow; glorious views and scenery.  Highly decadent to be be able to ease any muscle aches and pains in the sauna and steam room each evening!

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching Lutterkopf summit with a 360 degree panorama of the Dolomites and Austrian Alps

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sara is an inspirational, knowledgeable and fun group leader.
