Mount Toukbal in the summer!

I was concerned about trekking in the Atlas Mountains during summer as I am not very good in the heat! It was very hot but I drank bottle-fuls of water to keep me hydrated. My heart was overworked at times but I managed to complete all the walking plus the optional extras. I was delighted! You do have to love walking to do this trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

Being able to reach the summit of Mount Toukbal with most of the group after a gruelling walk up on a beautiful afternoon was sensational. The sky was deep blue and the views were tremendous.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Hassan was a fabulous leader whose primary concern was for the group as a whole. He runs a tight ship and his approach is meticulous. He inspired confidence right from the start.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We did a lot of walking - about 7 hours each day. On two days we did quite a bit less than this though had a choice of doing optional/extra walks. It is a great idea to take water purification tablets as we had access to water (provided in a jerry can) at lunch and dinner times and could fill up easily and regularly. Drinking tube attachments which you can fit on to water bottles are a great idea as it will ensure that you can continue drinking and hydrating while walking.

Mt Toubkal

So I booked onto this trekk at very short notice (5 days before departure) and was very pleased with the help giving to me by the company in making sure there was space available for me on the trip. From the moment I left Scotland to the moment I left Morocco to come back home I had nothing but an excellent experience with Exodus. The trip was well catered for with fantastic guides who at times gave us abit of knowledge about the areas we where trekking through. This was my first experience with Exodus and would highly reccommend them to family and friends.

Most Inspirational Moment

For me the most inspirational part of the trip was how well the group and staff got on and we all helped each other in different ways during the trekk.

So we started in Marrakech and stuck to the plan of the trip notes (as they very accurate) The trip itself housed some incredible views, experiences and long lasting memories! I personally did it for my 18th and found the trip to be an overwhelmingly positive experience.

Most Inspirational Moment

A frankly unbeatable moment in the Atlas Mountains was camping above the clouds with beautiful, Sparkling stars overhead. This could only be outmatched by the high standard of cooking (putting my mother to shame) and the abundance of food leaving us full many an occasion.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We had hassan as a group leader. He engaged exceeding well and helped to make the trip what it is (a magical experience). He brought many a laugh to us, kept us safe and cared for us all week. He was also very organised as we reached each destination nearly perfectly on the predestined time he suggested if we didn't beat his time. Abdul was also with us, constant smiling with a warm, welcoming glow. One thing I can safely say is that u will be in safe hands!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring sun cream and prepare to sweat but it is sooo worth it!

Excellent trip, well organised. We were all very well looked after (pampered even!) The food was excellent and the camping was very comfortable. Everything was done for us.

Most Inspirational Moment

The summit of mount Toubkal was quite literally the "high point" of the holiday - but the most memorable moment will always be the wonderful hospitality extended to us by the group leader in his home village. Thank you Hasan - and happy Ramadan.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader was excellent and attentive and very competent. There was no doubt that we were in safe hands. 10 out of 10.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The swimming pool in the hotel isn't really big enough to exercise in (in case you were thinking of packing trunks and goggles like I did) You do have the option of leaving a bag at the hotel in Marrakesh - something I made use of.

Alan - Toukbal 31st May 2016

Well organised from day one. Met some great people on the ‘team’, including the guide and his helpers. I would recommend this holiday to anyone. But please make sure you are prepared for the altitude. This is not just a physical walk, but also mentally tasking as you have to be aware of where you put your feet all the time.

Most Inspirational Moment

The scenery was outstanding. And just seeing the relief and joy on the rest of the group when they reached the summit of Toukbal.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Hassan. What can I say. If you weren't paying attention to his briefings he let you know and quite rightly. An excellent leader who made sure everyone was safe during the various ascents, resting when necessary for the slower walkers. Always willing to chat about his life and culture, a pleasure to listen to.

Advice for Potential Travellers

As above. You may see some walkers wearing trainers, this is not advisable, especially as a lot of the paths are over lose shale. Walking boots must be worn. A reasonably good level of fitness is required, so don't think a walk around the park with your dog will be sufficient exercise. Go for some long, fast walks with a back pack on.

Mount Toubkal ClimbE

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. Our guide was excellent. The trip was well organised and the food was delicious. The walks were great – the scenery beautiful and the Berber village fascinating. As I am not as fit as I should be I was worried about the pace but I coped OK. I decided not to do the summit as I found the scree scary.

Most Inspirational Moment

Arriving at the beautiful shady camp after the first day's climb.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fabulous. I felt safe with him. I really enjoyed hearing him talk about Morocco and his family and he took us for tea at his house which was a real privilege.

Fantastic Experience with a Wonderful Group

I was not really sure what to expect from the trip having not experienced a trekking holiday before but this turned out to be a truly enjoyable trip. The group was sixteen people and a complete mix of backgrounds and ages which made for entertaining conversation over the week we had together. Unseasonal cold weather meant a last minute change to the planned itinerary which was unfortunate but entirely unavoidable and the weather prevented us scaling the second (optional) 4000m peak but the alternative local Hammam experience was a great substitute for our tired bodies.

Most Inspirational Moment

The truly fantastic vista from the top of Toubkal will stay in my mind for ever!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Hassan was a credit to Exodus and to his country in general. His local knowledge and his willingness to share his experiences and snippets of his cultural heritage and religion made for both and enjoyable and highly educational week.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you struggle to close the kit bag provided you have packed too much kit for the trip.

Amazing value for money

A fantastic all round experience of Morocco. Sampling both the buzzing city of Marrakech and the idyllic Berber villages of the high Atlas.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the summit of Toubkal, despite difficult conditions will stay with me for a lifetime.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader Hassan Zbair was a credit to Exodus. Cool, calm, confident and resourceful. Hassan went above and beyond a number of ties during our trip. A wealth of knowledge about Morocco and the Berber way of life. Hassan spoke several languages and was able to make everyone feel comfortable and relaxed. We had extremely wintery conditions for a May summit and Hassan quietly and calm reorganised the sleeping arrangments and trek route to ensure we all got the very best experience we could. Hassan made sure that we got the final summit in the bag in the face of 2 feet of snow and very strong winds whilst at the same time making completely sure we were all safe. I'd gladly be guided by Hassan again on any mountain trek.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Yes, if travelling in early May, you may need to consider that it might still be snowy and should pack winter kit, just in case! You need a good pair of water resistant walking boots, period. Also useful might be a pair of crampons for poor weather (but these can be hired at the refuge for 200dh). Take toilet rolls! Finally, don't use the currency exchange in the airport (its a rip off) use an ATM instead, there are loads near the hotels in Marrakech. 2000dh is plenty (150 sterling) for water, snacks and a few souvenirs.
