CARPATHIAN CULTURE AND WILDLIFE

Food for the soul! – A week of stunning scenery and good company led by Cosmin and Katerina, both of whom’s passion for Romania’s wildlife and culture is inspirational.

Most Inspirational Moment

Vistas so wide you can't take it all in.  So many different shades of green.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Cosmin has a passion for Romania, it's wildlife and history.  He is very knowledgable and he loves guiding. A great guide!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you are fit! There is no such thing as 'flat' on this trip.  It was often steep and sometimes loose underfoot.  That said it wasn't hard walking all day every day due to the 'culture' part of the itinerary.

AMALFI COAST & BAY OF NAPLES

A well-balanced mix of spectacular sight-seeing, phenomenal history and leisurely walks around the Amalfi Coast and Bay of Naples. Fantastic accommodation and delicious food were a bonus.

Most Inspirational Moment

So many inspirational moments. Visiting the surprisingly well-preserved "ruins" of Herculaneum, followed by a walk up Mount Vesuvius was a definite highlight. The 'Walk of the Gods' was breathtaking as were Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. The vast area of Pompeii (optional trip) was equally awe-inspiring.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader, Christine Rooney - deservedly one of Exodus's highly commended leaders of 2010 - was absolutely terrific. She was incredibly enthusiastic throughout the holiday and has a great sense of humour. She is highly knowledegable and passionate about each area visited and made each day memorable and fun. Her organisational skills were also second-to-none.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I have no reservations about recommending this trip. If you like historical sites, impressive scenery, fresh air, amazing food and wine then you need look no further. Groups will vary from trip to trip I'm sure, but i definitely struck gold with my fellow travellers. The hotel offers Exodus customers free internet access should you wish to Skype home with your smart phone. Make sure you wear a pair of sensible shoes for the Vesuvius walk and Walk of the Gods - I saw people struggling with flip-flops! Naples is gritty - bear in mind it's a city - every surface seems to have graffitti on it. The museum in Naples is definitely worth a trip - with hundreds of equisite statues, impressive mosaics and a rather amusing "over age 14 only" section.

AMALFI COAST & BAY OF NAPLES

A sure indication of how enjoyable such trips are, is how the days fly by un-noticed, and indeed with nobody paying any attention to what day of the week it is.  From the very first evening we gathered together with Christine, the tour leader, I could see this was going to be a wonderful holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

Many moments were inspirational in such a short time. From a very personal point of view - following a serious illness two years ago when I could barely walk from one side of my hospital ward to the other, completing the Path of the Gods walk between Bomerano and Positano gave me immense personal satisfaction. A bit of a triumph really, and a tad emotional.  (Of course, being a bloke I didn't let anyone else see that!)Meeting fellow like-minded travellers on the trip,  interacting with local villagers in Bomerano, feeling the general ambience of our surroundings,  experiencing the culture and history, and touching the psyche of the people - all these things were quite inspirational and uplifting.

Thoughts on Group Leader

None of these things mentioned above would have been possible without the input from Christine Rooney.  I can confidently say that Christine's professionalism, communication skills, local knowledge, accomplished mastery of the language, her lovely manner, her whole approach to what is a responsible and demanding role is second to none. She was the principal reason for bringing this stunning and beautiful part of Italy to life - from plain words in a book or names on a map, she changed them into a rich and vibrant reality that will remain in our memories for life. I have made many trips now with Exodus over the years, and while every leader has been excellent, Christine ranks as the finest.

Advice for Potential Travellers

No - they are all grown adults.

INCA TRAIL & THE AMAZON RAINFOREST

Excellent holiday, whole party really mixed well, Juan the leader was brilliant, very knowledable.  He was swell supported by Wilson- a star in the making.  Emerson and Edwin in the rainrforest also brilliant

Most Inspirational Moment

Realiosing that we were in great hands whcih gave the whole party the confidence to tackle the inca trail and know they would succeed  Arriving at machu picchu and mixing with all those americans who had come by train- we all felt very superiorThe homestead  and the people on lake TThe cloud forest-wow

Thoughts on Group Leader

A real gem was highly organised gave out clear and consise directions, nothing was too much trouble and a laugh ( coupled with the  phase will tell you about that later , usually the dificult walking bits) , knowledge of Incas unbelievable.  He along with wilson emerson and edwin made the holiday.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It is not like the brochure says a walk in the cotswolds , but the whole holiday is great.

INCA TRAIL, TITICACA & NAZCA

My holiday was unfortunately hampered by being ill and spending a night in a local clinic. Although what I would say is that Exodus were superb. I had reps getting me back from Inca trail and also reps coming to see if I was ok in the Clinic. Also they organised me getting to Machu Picchu by train.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing Machu Picchu as I never thought I would get to see it. It was an amazing experience. Especially as when we got there it was all misty but as the day went on the sun got out and the views were amazing and got some great pics. If you do not do the Inca trail go up to the Sungate, takes about 45 mins to and hour to walk but is well worth. The views are amazing. Also what was great was the people who were on the tour. Got on really well in the solo group and although I only got to camp one night I really enjoyed.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Houylca (sorry if I spelt it wrong) was amazing. He was very good at explaining things and was great at organising it so I could get back from the group as well as organising people to take me off the Inca trail when I was ill. A great guy and was really interesting to talk to. Also the resturants he took us to were really good, especially the fish restaurant on the coast.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would not bother taking a sleeping bag I would hire one. Leaves more room for souverniers! Also pack light for the Inca trail. Also I do not think you need to take 2 water bottles. Water is provided on tour and plastic water bottles are fine. I would just take the one water bottle.I would defo take an Ipod as the travelling from Cuzco to Lima takes a long time and if you can not read on a bus an ipod is essential. Also it is worth getting Sols as although it says take dollars, everywhere takes Sols. So I have would have a mix of both.

WALKING IN TUSCANY

A excellent way to see the Tuscan countryside.  The walking was incredible even though we found it tough at times due to the heat and the steep inclines.

Most Inspirational Moment

The veiws from the mountains were spectacular and the scenery outstanding. Our guide chose routes that gave a varied perspective of tuscany which included mountain ridges, steep hill walks and forest tracks.  It was good to be based in one place and the hospitality at Braccicorti was fantastic with true italian home cooking.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide Sara, was professional, experienced and very considerate to the capabilities of all of the group members we all felt very safe in her capable hands.  Personnaly she help me achieve far more than I ever thought possible she was a true inspiration.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you want a true feeling for the countyside and people try Exodus.  Read the trip notes carefully as they do explain in detail what to expect and take the advice of the guide they will help you acheive your goals and it is worth it in the end.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

What an interesting country.  Petra was amazing, Wadi Rum was stunning and we really enjoyed riding camels through the desert.  Couldn’t believe we could ride camels through Wadi Rum in the morning, and snorkel in the Red Sea in the afternoon.

Most Inspirational Moment

Visiting the high places of Petra - seeing the size of the site.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dougan was very knowledgeable and patient.  He was a pleasure to be with and his dance moves needed to be seen!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take US Dollars and change into Jordanian Dinars once you are there (this was Exodus' advice to us and worked very well).

WALKING THE GREAT WALL

As a usual spain packaged family holiday guy, my son wanted to do something exciting with his dad before he goes to Uni, So this was completely out of my comfort zone. I researched the holidays on the net and i thought Exodus was by far the best. And what an amazing experiance!, Here i was the other side of the world trekking up and down mountains, with fantastic views. Talk about tough, but i dug deep and completed it everyday. And what a fantastic group of people, all friendly and willing to discuss their prevoius adventures. And thanks for Barry for lending me his shades.

Most Inspirational Moment

This was definately on the last day, when me and my son had reached the last step, held our hands high and one of the the lads sang the rocky tune and we danced up and down to it.And knowing that me and my son had completed this together.

Thoughts on Group Leader

I cant thank John and Jason enough, they were superb! always very attentive to the groups needs and discussed lots of historical importance, and they were really nice guys to.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do it!The China Wall trek is amazing.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

A great holiday, fitting many of the highlights of Jordan into just one week. It was a compact trip, but full of different experiences, historic sites, contrasts and people. I would highly recommend this holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

The 2 day visit to Petra provided many inspirational moments,Standing in front of the Treasury, climbing to the top and reaching the Monastery, exploring the High Place for the spectacular views and absorbing the history from the tombs, temples and architecture. I also experienced Petra by night, with the site lit by candles. Closely followed by Wadi Rum, sleeping under that stars and experiencing the T. E Lawrence desert. I joined the one hour camel ride and enjoyed the 4 X 4 vehicle trip across the sands.

Thoughts on Group Leader

A major plus with travelling with Exodus is the use made of a local guide, which helped to make this holiday a memorable trip. Dougan was an experienced, well travelled and knowledgeable group leader, who directed us to the best sites and viewing points, ensuring that everyone was satisfied with their visit. He was informative about the sites, briefing us on the coach about Jordan's history and passing scenery. Dougan was excellent in making sure that we all participated and enjoyed our holiday.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared to be inspired and delighted by Jordan and its people. Jordanians are very friendly, speak English and greet you by saying welcome.  Take Jordanian currency in low denominations as this saves time looking for currency exchange in the desert at Wadi Rum!  Wear comfortble footware. Consider firm boots for Petra as there are many steps to climb. Take a bath plug as I could not find one in the hotel rooms (assumably to save water). Make use of the Leisure facilities at the Al Fanar Palace hotel (Swimming pool, gym, jacuzzi, sauna)

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

Overall I thought there was a good balance of scenic cycling with a bit of down time and sightseeing.

Most Inspirational Moment

The ride back from Pupnat to Korcula was very pretty - topped off with a swim in the sea - perfect.  In fact any day finishing with a swim was great.  The last day of cycling along the coast was also very pretty.  Cycling throught the vineyards was great too. I also thought the evening out at the home cooked food place outside Korcula was excellent - if a bit more pricey than we had been expecting (230 Kuna each) - this may have had something to do with the grappe.... Oh, and worth going to the Tower Bar in Korcula - good views in the day time, but make sure you can deal with ladders.

Thoughts on Group Leader

This was Bojan's first tour on his own and I think he did a great job managing a varied group which had diverse demands.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Croatia is not a cheap place - though not overly pricey either.  As breakfast is the only meal included in the price there is plenty of money to be spent on food (and ice cream).  Many of our group requested thet we have some picnic lunches which I think was reasonable (but you need a ruckack or something to carry it in from the supermarket!).  The meal at the the top of the hill on the first day's cycling was very nice, simple food (bread, cheese, proscuttio and grilled veg) but many felt over priced - and as we hadn't had any choice or say I think some felt a bit "had" - hence the request that the group have a bit more freedom of choice. Obviously we expect our guide to make good recommendations for dinners etc so most of the time most of the group went with his advice - and it was very good.
