I recently completed an 8-day hiking tour in Mallorca, Spain. Each day brought a new adventure. The hikes were 7-10 miles a day. Most of the hikes were over moderate terrain interspersed with rocky paths. The hiking tracks allowed us to view dramatic coastal areas to beautiful mountain views. Our group quickly meshed with each other. The camaraderie made the trip more enjoyable.

We were a small group of 5. The campsites were scenic with tents put up around the shade of a tree, exotic birds in the branches. The tents were roomy for 2 and you could stand up in them. The mattresses comfortable at least 2 inches thick. The facilities a t the sites were always good – hot showers and a pool but usually no Wifi. Just have to get used to low level snoring from other tents! Huge armoured crickets – we loved them.
We enjoyed seeing the wildlife but for us the dunes were incredible, the scale and colour at dawn, breath taking. Deadvlei with its skeleton trees, spectacular. The optional excursions at Swakopmond we highly recommend the 2 hour quad biking in the dunes - such fun, and in the afternoon we took a scenic flight - sit on the right side for brilliant view of dunes and wrecks. The walk to see the White Lady rock painting was a small adventure.
Ronnie and cook Reuban were an excellent team. Reuban had been cook for the prime minister and cheerfully cooked us delicious meals, catering for every diet. There was always a hand washing station before meals. There were miles and miles of driving through arid and semiarid desert and long days of bumpy gravel roads but we felt Ronnie always drove us safely. and then set up camp for us.
Don't bother getting a visa in advance as everyone joined the same queue at the airport, no fast track, and everyone filled in the same forms! Be prepared for delays - one of our group was in the queue for 2 1/2 hours ! Waterberg was a great place, it felt like entering Jurassic Park with all its security and gates, but the temp dropped and that drive back down in the open vehicle was freezing! Hats and scarves needed! Craft market on the way back to Windhoek full of bowls and carvings but expect over intense haggling - we preferred to pick up a few souvenirs on the way especially from the Herero women. Taste the best apple pie in the world at Solitaire. Phones can be charged on the truck and also at each campsite there is an electrical point next to the tents.
Staying in Moneglia is a good choice as the 5 towns themselves are quite busy with tourists. Our guide Michele was great getting train tickets for short trips to different hikes. Our group was so cohesive that we all shared optional meals together.
The views from high up the coast are spectacular and we enjoyed the beautiful scenes from several locations.
Michele does a great job handling all the details for transportation, lunches and dinners, and spending time with each of us to make sure we were doing well. Since I flew from the US and was not in the Exodus arranged transport, I was very glad that Michele texted me beforehand to communicate the time and place to meet. That was much appreciated.
Make sure you are fit and prepared for a lot of steps up and down the hill on our walks.
Lovely coastal scenery with time to visit special sites and buildings. Excellent leader Joao with very helpful Alex in support. A lot more off road tracks than I had anticipated and I never really got to grips with them, but the group members really tried to help me. Very good range of decent quality hotels and I especially liked the more rural locations. Very enjoyable evening dinners in a variety of restaurants and mostly very good lunches – and I really enjoyed the picnic on the last day.
Ferry trip on day 1.
Very professional and helpful. Easy to talk to and friendly.
I hadn't fully appreciated how much of the cycling each day would be off road. I had no mountain biking experience and I would recommend getting in some practice in advance .
The area is beautiful, with snow capped peaks up to 3000 meters. The hikes are very doable, especially up to and back from the refugio. We visited the national parks and saw the good work that Rewilding Apennines is doing. Exodus donates the trip profits to them.
Having the beautiful Abruzzo Apennines all to ourselves.
Our guide, Filippo, has extensive knowledge of the area and its flora and fauna, and gladly shared it with us. From the hikes to spotting wildlife, to taking us to great places for some lunches and dinners, Filippo does a wonderful job and one can see his commitment to us and the work of Rewilding Apennines.
The usual, bring layers and rain gear. And be ready for a wonderful time.
A great trip with fantastic guides and superb walks
The views on the coastal walks were fantastic
Excellent - both Francisco and Rafael were outstanding. Friendly, helpful, full of local knowledge, passionate and caring about their country. They looked after the group very well and ensured everyone got as much out of the trip as they could
A great trip if you enjoy varied walks (both hill and coastal routes) with superb views and guides who have a wealth of local knowledge
Rafael and Francisco from Algavarian Roots made this a memorable hiking, cultural and special experience. They were a fountain of knowledge and the visits to the olive making facility, the winery and the distillery added to the trip. Great hikes in various locations from the Monchique highlands to the coastal trails. But it was the caring guides who did it all. Driving safely, briefing us and Rafael helping and looking out for my wife on the steeper parts. They both were proud of this region and they and their families were connected to the land.
Come a day early and try to get these two special guys.
The trip is very comprehensive seeing all the major sites and some of the lesser known sites but all added to the sense of the sophistication of Ancient Greece. George our guide was able to bring these sites to life with the stories of Greek mythology. There are some long-ish driving days but the scenery is stunning and was a great opportunity to bond with the group.
Seeing the acropolis and the vast collection at the Athens archeological museum.
George was very knowledgeable on Greek history and culture, Greek ancient mythology and very engaging with random topics of discussion. He was very organised and the trip went without any glitches.
Touch up on your Greek mythology and try to add some extra days at start/ end of your time for Athens exploration and a day trip to the Meteora monasteries (the trip used to include the Meteora monasteries but this has been dropped from the itinerary now).
Hands down one of our favorite trips! Extremely well organized tour with an amazing leader. Every day was chock full of fantastic sights and awesome scenery. The Peruvian landscape, history and culture were captivating and I still can’t believe how much we experienced. There were some long days and early starts, but we loved every minute and will cherish each memory. Our fellow travelers were a great group and we shared a lot of laughs. Kudos to our leader Renzo for making this a seamless journey through his amazing country.
So many inspiring moments - first glimpse of Machu Picchu spread out below us, staying with a lovely Amantani family and learning about their traditions, spotting colorful birds and butterflies in the cloud forest, flying over the mysterious Nazca lines, watching the Andean condor soar over one of the deepest canyons...shall I go on?
Renzo was a fantastic leader! As he would say - Super Dupes! Fun & friendly, he was also incredibly organized, which made moving around much easier. He made a point of suggesting activities geared to our individual interests. The tipping kitty was a great idea so that our numerous local guides and drivers would be tipped appropriately without us having to think about it. Every restaurant he recommended was excellent and somehow he performed a miracle by getting us on a timely train in the midst of a chaotic delay. In addition, he was serious about monitoring everyone each day we were at altitude. We can't recommend him highly enough.
If you're up for a fast-paced tour through a beautiful country, don't hesitate to book. Initially anxious about the homestay, it ended up being a highlight for us. Food was excellent and plenty of safe drinking water was provided. Hydration and electrolytes (we brought Zaca tablets) were key for the altitude. Layers are necessary as the sun is quite warm at altitude, but once it sets the temp drops quickly. Some folks listened to podcasts or music during the longer drives, but even without those there is incredible scenery to keep you occupied. Bring shoes that are stiff enough for uneven and cobbled paths. Come ready to learn about Peruvian history and culture and you won't be disappointed.
Madeira is one of the most beautiful islands I have ever seen. The hiking/walking was sometimes challenging, but the days were not extremely long. Flowers everywhere and scenery that is spectacular from above. The sunrise hike was chilly, but rewarding!
Sunrise hike and the stillness of watching the sun coming up from above the clouds
Bruno was very knowledgeable as he is a local and has been leading tours for decades. He has a good sense of humor and got along well with the group.
