Walking in the Greek islands

Very Leisurely

Most Inspirational Moment

being on the new cone forming in the centre of Santorini

Thoughts on Group Leader

good command of multiple languages, had hard job on Santorini because of hotel site. Generally very affable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Plenty of high factor SPF30 minimum sun protection.

Walking on the Greek Islands

A great trip, beautiful walks, stunning scenary, good culture, simple-small-friendly hotels in perfect locations, knowledgeable leader – couldn't have asked for more from my first Exodus walking holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

Climbing up to a high point with just a few of the group memebers, great views, great company, no other tourists - perfect.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Really good, he knew his stuff, was caring and entertaining.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be aware that the ferry journey's do take up a bit of time, but it's definately worth it to see the 3 different islands.

WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

A good intro to getting to and around the Greek Islands. The hotels were adequate and in good locations. The bathrooms were a real challenge, especially the one in Naxos.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Fira to Oia walk on Santorini was spectacular and we had great weather for our 5km easy walk....the scenery just kept getting more spectacular as you got closer to Oia. Picture postcard stuff. We were kindly invited by locals jamming in Lefkes to a traditional music festival in Paros, in the town of Naoussa, and it was fun just people-watching. The dancing by young and old was a lot of fun to see. I'm glad I went as it was just so Greek!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Cecile was a very friendly and helpful guide and gave a good insight into being an expat in Greece. I thought she guided the walks well with the different speed levels. Good communication at times did not always work well as I think our group was a straggly bunch but Cecile did her best to keep us all informed of the group's plans. She booked us a fabulous guide at the Akrotiri archaeological site, very informative and well worth the trip. Exodus should really include it not as an option but as an inclusion: our entire group went to see it.

Advice for Potential Travellers

September was a great time to visit Santorini, Paros and Naxos: warm but not unbearable and tourist numbers are much lower. There is a music festival held at the Naxos castle in August and September so I recommend taking in a show. The organiser was a real character and you get to try several homemade alcoholic beverages as part of your ticket price.

The trip didn't start too well when Exodus changed the starting hotel from Athens to Rafina a few days before the start of the trip and I was spending a few days in Athens before the trip started so am glad I saw the email before I left home. The way Exodus handled this last minute change was pitiful as they offered no explanation or transportation to Rafina, or even a map or description of where it is. At first I assumed it was just another suburb in the centre of Athens but when I could not find it on the Athens tourist map, I googled it. Athens and Rafina are not close at all so this is a major change to the itinerary, not just a hotel change, as the group never actually even set foot into Athens city proper. If a taxi had been provided, I could have checked out of my Athens hotel and arrived during daylight hours to enjoy the seaside hotel instead of arriving around 9pm.With no assistance or advice from Exodus, I worked out that it was easier and 35 Euros cheaper to travel back to the Airport to meet the Exodus group arriving and join their airport transfer than it was to get to the hotel in Rafina directly. I pointed this out by email to the Exodus representative and she allowed me to join the transfer even though I was not on the flight. A subsequent email from Exodus then followed, mentioning the approximate taxi fare to Rafina but no offer of transportation. Later we found out that some members had their taxi fare to the hotel in Rafina paid for by Exodus as their travel agent complained on their behalf, but no offer was made to me and to another lady who also arrived earlier in Athens. Furthermore we found out the reason for the hotel/city change was that the local company did not book enough rooms in the Athens hotel so it was too late to book more rooms as they were now full. I thought that is what I pay Exodus to do...to follow up on their sub-contractors. Consequently, we had to take a catamaran to Naxos instead of the usual larger ferry and, although it was faster by an hour, it was most unpleasant with the rough seas. Most of the group felt very queasy as there is no outside to go to on catamarans. Having the catamaran staff walk around many times throughout the entire journey with vomit bags in hand was most reassuring indeed!!!

We would like to thank Lizette for her review. Unfortunately a schedule change to the ferry timetable was only announced only a few days before this trip began, so we had to alter the start point of the tour to Rafina. We tried to contact everyone affected by this, but we appreciate that finding this out just before the trip started must have been disappointing and we are really sorry for the inconvenience caused. Since this review was posted we have stopped using catamarans on this trip and we are now only using ferries for the crossing Lizette mentions.

WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

A really enjoyable week, The walks are easy/intermediate. Food was good. Hotels were satisfactory & the people were great company.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Parthenon.  Its on the a world heritage site for a reason.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fantastic! Very knowledgeable, very friendly and approachable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring walking/trekking gear, bring sun cream & hat. All hotels have basic facilities but they all have wifi.

WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

A wonderful way to explore 3 very different islands.  Our guide Thanos was extremely knowledgeable and brought the history of each island alive for us and his enthusiasm was infectious.  Definitely a leisurely trip with a ferry ride every other day (look out for dolphins) and time to explore the towns and laze on a few beaches – very welcome after our walk in the heat on Paros.  Great food and lots of it- Thanos was very helpful with recommendations for local dishes/drinks.

Most Inspirational Moment

exploring the beautiful islands and seeing the pace of life on Paros and Naxos, lovely atmosphere and places to return to.  The scenery on Santorini is spectacular, hence it is very popular with tourists - fine if you can stay away from the visitors from the cruise ships, the walk was amazing (it was the second time I had done this) and we stayed longer in Ia and it emptied out in the later afternoon.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent, thorough and a very high standard of service - both from himself and those around us in each of the restaurants.

Advice for Potential Travellers

it was easy to add extra nights at the start/end of the trip and well worth it to see Athens - Jason Inn was very central and exploring from there was easy with the main sights all within walking distance - very pleasant as the centre of Athens is mostly pedestrianised.

Suggestions

a great group made this a wonderful trip

WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

A thoroughly enjoyable trip with plenty to see and a variety of experiences. As a walker the trip needs to have one more good walk but if you accept that the holiday is only graded as easy then you will not be disappointed. The walk along the Santorini coast was excellent as was the walk on Naxos. Be prepared for an expensive week as food prices in Greece are rather high.

Most Inspirational Moment

The two main walks on Santorini and Naxos. Paros is a very quaint town with lovely narrow streets and a beautiful cathedral.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent. Thanos changeed the itinery to make sure the weather and ferry strikes did not impose on our week.

WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

Awesome, a wonderful expierence captured in my memory to last for a lifetime. The wildflowers, the scent of citrus, lovely catus and just the overall panoramic views of the islands. I felt inspiredd and energized after walking the most scenic places on earth.

Most Inspirational Moment

The group leader was dynamic, very experience . He used his judgement in keeping us safe and at the same time ensuring that we enjoyed our vacation. Lovely guy and personality. He also has a wealth of knowledge of the islands.

Thoughts on Group Leader

My advice is to follow the trip notes and walk with all of the items listed. I will also suggest wearing long pants for the mountain walks as some places the bushes are overgrown.

Advice for Potential Travellers

A very satisfied customer and will difinetly do crete in the near future.

WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

After the cold UK weather an ideal break at this time of year, warm and mostly sunny, a mix of pleasant walks, fine food, a touch of sightseeing and not too crowded this early in the season.

Most Inspirational Moment

The stunning walk from Fira to Oia on Santorini, dazzling ever changing views of the caldera, finishing with the while marble streets of Oia.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Well organised, knowledgeable, easy going, delightfull company.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Certainly this year in early April a light jacket for the evenings was useful.

WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

A well organised trip with an outstanding guide and very nice fellow walkers. The walks were just right for our age and fitness.

Most Inspirational Moment

The walk down the Byzantine way on Paros was spectacular. We, also, both felt a tremendous achievement in completing the 13kms. walk on Santorini.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was outstanding and lead us with humour and understanding. His knowledge about everywhere we visited was very good. He also was able to pass on lots of information about the long term history of where we visited. He knew some great restaurants and drinking "holes"

Advice for Potential Travellers

It was impotant to us that we selected the correct grade of walking to suite our age (over 70). It worked out very well and we did not feel that we were holding the walking party up!

Suggestions

Although the hotels were fairly basic they suited our needs (and budget). We really appreciated the hotel with the swimming pool!

WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

We have done several Exodus walking holidays and this one was disappointing in terms of the nature of the walking – three gentle strolls – and value for money – all the hotels were very basic.  We spent the following week on two other islands doing self guided walks and staying in far better accommodation for nearly half the price.  So in our opinion, this trip is only worth doing if you want to be in a group and/or want your travel arranged by a guide.

Most Inspirational Moment

Paros is relatively unspoilt.Santorini was overrun by tourists but its beauty cannot be denied.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader was helpful and pleasant.
