KENYA & TANZANIA ADVENTURE

The trip was as good as expected from the description except for some long, rough days travelling, arriving at some destinations too late to explore. The scenery and people of East Africa were fantastic.  The final few days of R&R on Zanzibar were welcome.

Most Inspirational Moment

The game drives in all parks were exceptional, particularly a personal game drive in the Serengeti (whilst the remainder of the party were ballooning) spotting a hyena and jackal tug-of-war with an unfortunate young buffalo, just killed by the hyena, just 20m from the truck. The bird life was amazing, a personal bird guide is required to identify them all, although Often, the driver, made a good attempt. I made good use of the local motorbike gatherings, hopping on the back for a lightening photographic tour of some of the towns in exchange for the cost of a gallon of fuel.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Emius was friendly, helpful, very informative and a good conversationalist, offering the right advice at the appropriate time. He was ably joined by Often who had a good knowledge of the bird life and Leo, a master cook, both of whom were resourceful, friendly and informative.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Unlike Namibia, where I have also travelled with Exodus, the non-metalled roads can be extremely rough. There are a few long days travelling (10-12 hours) on these very rough roads where the priority was to get to the destination rather than sample the route. I would have liked more scenery to explore on foot during the long travelling days. The Zanzibar dolphin excursion is one to be avoided. What is not explained on arrival at the hotel is that the sea is invarably rough (a 4 or 5 ft swell on the day) the dolphins elusive and swimming with them impossible in those conditions, had we seen any. More importantly, there were no lifejackets in the small wooden boat which went at least a mile offshore. This was a waste of a 6 hour trip.

WALKING IN THE WESTERN DOLOMITES

A fantastic area, the scenery was breathtaking and the hotel was excellent.  Using cable cars and gondolas to gain height means that most of the walking has tremendous views.  Underfoot the wildflowers are beautiful and there are marmots and chamois to see.  At the end of the day the spa area of the hotel was well used.  Hotel food was excellent with several unusual dishes and a scrumptious gala evening which was a real treat

Most Inspirational Moment

1 Seeing a chamois crossing the path not 20 ft away2 Getting to the top of one of the highest peaks at almost 10000 ft on the free day (mainly by amazing cable car)3 Managing to complete a section to the time specified on the signpost4 As ever on an Exodus tripp meeting like minded people and having a great time getting to know them

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eric was a very good leader - lots of knowledge about the area including the rocks, flowers etc.  The routes were chosen to make the most of poor weather forecasts although it turned out the forecasts were unduly pessimistic. He has a good sense of humour and the knack of creating a happy atmosphere in the group

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure to take a swimsuit to take advantage of the hotel spa area.  On the free day a good choice is to take the cable cars to the top of Sass Podoi from where the view is incredible and the mountain hut does the usual excellent lunch.  I did find the altitude affected me, I had not been this high before and the walking made me more breathless than normal.  People more accustomed to heights did not experience this.

HIGHLIGHTS OF MOROCCO

A well organised trip – felt so good to be guided around without having to make many decisions – a real break from the reality of life! Morocco proved to be a beautiful country full of colour, life and diversity. Away from the hustle and bustle of the souks and medinas, the people were friendly and welcoming.  A good mixture of city, desert, mountains and a brief trip to the coast. Personally, I found the time spent away from the cities most enjoyable but this trip has a bit of everything.

Most Inspirational Moment

My top 4:- Getting up before dawn to climb the dunes in the Sahara to watch the sunrise. Despite there being too much cloud cover to see anything really spectacular, the feeling of being up high on the dunes, away from civilisation and the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, overlooking a reddish/orange version of a lunar landscape was so peaceful.Sleeping out under the stars in a bedouin camp in the Sahara. I loved the sound and feeling of the light rain and sand being blown against my sheet I had cocooned myself in, and waking up at dawn surrounded by so much open space.Seeing the most amazing starry sky in the Atlas mountains. I have never seen anything like it - truly beautiful and very calming!Gaining a better understanding of Berber culture and life - humbling experience. Tasted some great thyme and mint teas!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was very good at including everyone and really wanted to make sure everyone was having a good time.  He bought local treats and snacks for us to sample during some of our long minibus trips. He was knowledgeable and had a good balance of seriousness and fun and was very kind and helpful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It's been said before but....Make sure you have wet wipes and toilet paper...Keep small change for the toiletsRemember to pack a torchTake swimwearIf you go on holiday hoping to read lots, this may not be the holiday for you!If travelling in the summer months when it is hot, make sure you have some lightweight sleeved tops to cover up - both to protect yourself from the sun and to be culturally sensitive - it is a Muslim country after all. Drink, drink, drink (bottled water) and then drink some more! And don't forget to brush your teeth with bottled water - it's not worth the upset stomache if you don't!

WALKING IN BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA

I have done a few Exodus holidays in Europe and would actually say that in terms of the scenery and the history of the country it was among the best.  Bosnia is not normally thought of as a holiday destination, but has lots to offer! Also not that many tourists either

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking in the wildflower meadows was absolutely beautiful and there were lots of butterflies as well if you like nature. There is also lots to see in Sarajevo.  As this was a walking holiday then obviously we had walks organised everyday but it would be nice to go back to visit some of the museums there as unfortunately there was so much to see we did not have enough time.It is amazing to see the resilience of the people of Sarajevo following their recent troubles.  It is difficult to imagine what it must have been like, but the reminders are still there in terms of the damaged ski station etc and the library which is still under repair. Amazing to think as well of the work which has been done rebuilding Mostar including the bridge there which was completely destroyed.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both Samer and Alen were excellent - considerate, informative about their country and enthusiastic

Advice for Potential Travellers

In Sutjeska National park there are not always well marked paths as it is not like the Lake District by way of example.  However, it is not a problem if you are used to walking. The scenery is well worth it anyway!

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

SOmetimes the food is good, or the scenery is good, or the guide is good, but all were good including the other people on the trip which you can’t always plan.

Most Inspirational Moment

Meeting other people from all walks of life with very different views and lifstyles

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ace. Informative.  Trustworthy.  Fun

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take hat and gloves - it can be very snowy at the top.  ANd remember waterproofs too - and a good head torch.

LADAKH: THE MARKHA VALLEY

This was a great trek, a good length both in distance and number of days, changing scenery every day, outstanding views. Being able to expereince some of the local culture was also a real treat.

Most Inspirational Moment

When we reached the top of the highest pass, the Gongmaru La, a huge eagle flew over us. It was magic. That, combined with the amazing scenery made the hard climb worth it!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dilip was an excellent group leader, attentive to the needs of the group and individuals, knowledgable and always sharing insights and information. Going with him to a family home and trying local beverages was also a trip highlight and was something we were able to experience due to his local connections.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for some long days walking, make sure your shoes are well broken in. Sandals or some other light shoes for river crossings are essential. A broad brimmed hat and sunglasses are good because it gets very hot and glary. I wished I had packed a small facecloth which would have made washing in the tent a bit easier. In saying that the only way to get a good wash is in the mountian streams - very cold but refreshing! Take it easy and don't try and charge around like you would at home - you will have a much more enjoyable experience!

VIETNAM ADVENTURE

A wonderful trip with many and varied activities. Vietnam is fascinating, a country in transition, with interesting scenery, friendly people and a healthy diet!

Most Inspirational Moment

Almost too many to mention: Halong Bay, the Cu Chi tunnels, Hoi An- buying tailor made clothes, the cookery class there and cycle ride to the beach- the general melee of the traffic (especially in Hanoi and Saigon), the War Remnants Museum, a visit to Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and finally, for my daughter, the Water Puppet show in Hanoi.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Trong was great- friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and well organised. This was an unusual trip in that the group consisted of our family alone (parents plus "kids" aged 22 and 18) and Trong was able to relate to each of us well and was good fun to be with. He had lots of local contacts and recommendations for us and generally helped us to make the best of our time.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You don't need too many dollars- we took 50% of anticipated spending which was too many. Agribank ATMs will allow you to draw 4, 000, 000 VND (about £120) for a 20,000 VND( 60p) fee-plus UK fee of course- other banks seemed to restrict the amounts to 2,000,000 for the same fee. You don't need a sheet sleeping bag for the Mekong Delta, though I am not unhappy with the beautiful silk ones I bought for 75000 VND each.Eating out etc is surprisingly cheap! If you are thinking of tailor-made clothes take photos from home if you particularly like any designs- the tailors are expert in making them.If you like milk in coffee you could consider taking some powdered milk since usually condensed milk is supplied.July was very humid and hot especially in the north but we had far less rain than anticipated and simply jumped into taxis (also v cheap) if it poured. Personally I was not troubled at all by mosquitos though my husband would disagree! We were fascinated by our visit to Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum, almost a pilgrimage for some Vietnamese and perhaps evidence of the influence of Communism, even today. This is not on the tour but well worth a visit. We found the laundry services at the hotels quite expensive, plus some things stretched and others shrunk........you have been warned!

GORILLAS & MASAI MARA

DEFINITELY DO THIS TRIP !! Absolutely brilliant, if you love wildlife and east african culture I would recommend this trip, if this is your first east african trip it is a must. Wonderful people and wildlife in 3 beautiful countries and you get to go to the fabulous masai mara on your first few days, also to Lake Nakuru with the Rhino's and flamingoes. Across into Uganda where it is more lush and green then Kenya where we stayed at Lake Bunyonyi and visited a childrens Orphanage run by Crystal – Loving Hearts Helping Hands – this was amazing and the walk up to this is lovely, gets you out of breath but the guy who took us stops frequently for everyone. The nature walk at Lake Mburo was really good and we needed a good walk by this time after sitting in the overland vehicle, the Ranger who took us was really informative. Then onward into Rwanda and Ruhengeri where we trekked the fabulous gorillas.

Most Inspirational Moment

The absolute ultimate part of this trip for me was the visit to the Gorillas, I was in the group who visited the Bwenge group of gorillas - there was the Silverback and 5 females and 5 young. The 3 month old baby with her mother was amazing and there were 2 youngsters age 2 and 3 who were very close less than 1 metre at times just looking us in the eyes with not a care in the world!! I also loved the masai mara where we saw many lions, 1 lioness with a fresh kill of wildebeest we could hear her ripping off the rump she was so enjoying! Also we came across a cheetah under a small bush which was fabulous, the leopard was being elusive so didn't see that but we were so lucky to see elephants, hyena, 3 males lions together, zebra, wildebeest aplenty, buffalo, giraffe. Also waving at the children along the road and through the towns and villages was fab, in Rwanda it was the thumbs up to the children! Also the orphanage was amazing for me - playing football with the children, we sat in class and watched them doing their numbers and then they did some dancing for us and made us have a go too - they are brilliant dancers even the little ones, put us to shame!! I also took lots of pens and paper and I bought a football from a supermarket in Uganda for the children - they loved it and the teachers really appreciated the paper and pens for them.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Emias was very funny and a great and lovely guy, he is from Zimbabwe. He kept us informed of the plans for the day ahead, whilst we were having dinner each evening he gave us a talk about the next morning and day plans. Nothing was too much trouble and he brought a great vibe to the whole group. We also had Leo our Chef who cooked some lovely food, pork chops, an array of vegetables, freshly made lasagne was gorgeous, chicken, pasta, rice potatoes etc. There was cooked breakfast most mornings along with cereal and toast. I don't think anyone was allowed time to get hungry as they fed us so well - definitely no losing weight on this trip! We also had Francis who was co-driver and helped set up tents etc - he was quieter at first but came out of his shell and is a fab funny guy too. They really made the trip even better with their banter and jokes. The one thing I would say is that when we were travelling through towns and villages is that they didn't really tell us about the area or where we were or the fact that for example it was a big tea growing area made famous by Brooke Bond etc (one of my fellow travellers told us that), it is a bit difficult as its a sizeable truck and only one of the guys sits in the main part of the truck with us at the front, we asked some questions whilst travelling along here and there but not everyone could hear - so it's swings and roundabouts.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Ah yes, I would take some travel toilet roll, some of the campsites tend to run out, they provide a stack of it on the vehicle at the start but it soon runs out. Some toilets are holes in the ground but they are inside a small toilet block usually. Also we stop for the proper toilets pretty frequently and along the road now and then and use the 'Bush Toilets' which is quite fun sometimes trying to find a suitable bush to hide behind!! Take a shower whenever they are available as a couple of camp sites (Lake Mburo) were yuk so go with the wet wipes there, but we weren't away from a place where you wouldn't have a shower for more than 1 nite. Some of them were literally a dribble and either cold or lukewarm but better than nothing. Take plenty of memory card of course and batteries you can charge up on the vehicle maximum 6 plug holes (3 pin) but there was usually plenty room for everyone to do theirs at some point in the day. Plenty mosquito spray goes without saying really, I only got 2 bites but I did cover up in the evenings and my room mate Bridget and I sprayed our tent lots - so much that we were like children 1 night as we got the giggles with inhaling it by accident - but it was very funny!!! When you do the trek up to the gorillas definitely wear gardening gloves, I did on the way up but on the way down I took them off as my hands were too hot but I caught my hand on a prickly plant and I now have a rash on both hands which is so itchy and is taking a while to get rid of. Remember to take enough money to cover the tips for the guys who look after you, £75 dollars is enough for this. I spent approx £400 - depends if you like buying from the craft shops like I did! Oh yes and some antibacterial gel is a must. Although it says pack light I could have taken a few more bits of clothing, gives you room to take home presents anyway!!

CARPATHIAN CULTURE AND WILDLIFE

Perfect holidays if you like wildlife, nature and history…as well as eating good food!

Most Inspirational Moment

The bear hide was really fantastic! But Ilove all the treks in he mountains too.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very knowledgeable and interesting

MONT BLANC CIRCUIT

A most enjoyable holiday with lots of exercise and tremendous views.

Most Inspirational Moment

Every day that the clouds cleared and you could see the mountain views. On one of the rest days I took the cable car up from Italy and accross to France. This is fairly expensive but well worth it for the fantastic scenery.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was excellent, very organized and thorough in briefings and leading. Also our driver transporting our stuff from campsite to campsite was excellent, her cooking and meals were brilliant.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you are fit and used to walking for long days up and down steep terrain. If you are not a regular camper then don't be put off by the camping part of the trip - it is very well organized and fun.
