Land Only Itinerary

Day 1
Adventure starts in Phnom Penh

Begin your adventure in the riverside capital of Phnom Penh, where the Mekong and Tonlé Sap meet and the recent history of Cambodia is documented in compelling detail.

Around 6pm, say sousadei to your tour leader and fellow travellers, when we gather as a group for the first time to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead.

Your tour leader then ensures a warm Cambodian welcome by arranging a group dinner at Eleven One Kitchen, a restaurant known for its zero-plastic approach and fresh Khmer dishes (round-trip transfer approximately one hour).

Want more time in Phnom Penh? Secure pre-tour hotel nights through your sales representative.

Day 2
Understand Cambodia’s past at Tuol Sleng and the Killing Fields

To learn about Cambodia’s recent past, we join a specialist guide to tour the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21), once a secondary school and later a Khmer Rouge interrogation and detention centre. The visit continues at the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, where a memorial stupa containing more than 8,000 skulls stands as a record of the atrocities committed here.

We then turn to present-day city life with time at Central Market, an art deco landmark whose domed hall leads to aisles stacked with clothes, jewellery, and local snacks.

In the afternoon, moto-remorks (Cambodian tuk-tuks) take us through the city to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, home to a floor laid with more than 5,000 silver tiles and a collection of detailed Buddha images. The day ends at Preah Ang Dong Ker, a riverside shrine where local people gather before dusk, followed by a gentle walk along the waterfront, watching the city stir into action with food vendors and glowing lanterns.

Those who have prebooked the optional sunset river cruise on the Mekong will enjoy that this evening.

Day 3
To Battambang • Witness the extraordinary bat exodus

Leave Phnom Penh and travel (five hours excluding stops) to Battambang. Along the way, we pause in the riverside pottery city of Kampong Chhnang, venturing into local workshops to meet the artisans and learn the clay-shaping techniques used here for generations.

Arriving in Battambang, we find a town of French elegance, friendly Khmer people, and beautifully preserved colonial-era architecture.

Late afternoon, drive to Phnom Sampeou (Ship Mountain) to experience one of Cambodia’s great natural spectacles. A gradual walk leads to shrines and small caves near the summit, where views stretch across the countryside. As the light fades, we return to the base of the mountain to watch the remarkable stream of bats leaving the cave system to feed in the fields − a magical phenomenon lasting several minutes.

Day 4
Dive into Khmer cuisine with Battambang chefs • To Siem Reap

Start today with a hands-on cooking class revealing the secrets and techniques behind traditional Khmer dishes. It begins with a guided walk through a local market, where your teacher-cook explains common herbs, pastes, and spices before helping you select ingredients for the session.

Back in the kitchen, you prepare and cook several dishes, then enjoy them for an early lunch.

In the afternoon, we drive to Siem Reap, the small city that serves as the base for visiting Angkor – a World Heritage site that’s generally considered the most important archaeological complex in Southeast Asia.

If time allows, we stop at the Angkor Silk Farm, where staff walk us through the full process from mulberry cultivation and silkworm raising to dyeing and weaving.

Day 5
Explore the great temples of Angkor, starting with sunrise at Angkor Wat • Receive a monk blessing

Wake before dawn for an extra-special first taste of the Angkor complex, visiting Angkor Wat, the most famous temple, for sunrise. Its western orientation makes it a rewarding place to watch the sky brighten and a magnificent way to begin our exploration, while the cooler early morning period, before the large crowds, provides the best conditions for visiting this iconic structure.

After, we continue our journey of discovery, heading through the South Gate of Angkor Thom, framed by giant carved faces and lined with figures holding the semi-divine Nāga serpent.

Around 9am, we head back to the hotel for breakfast. Refuelled, return to the site and step inside Angkor Thom, the Great Royal City, we visit the Bayon temple, famous for its towers topped with serene stone faces, before walking through Ta Prohm, where tree roots weave through towers and galleries in remarkable shapes.

A short visit to a local pagoda concludes the day. Here, Buddhist monks lead a private blessing ceremony, gently tying red strings around our wrists: a gesture of goodwill for the journey ahead.

We finish with sunset at a viewpoint recommended by our tour leader, who chooses the best location depending on the season.

Day 6
Explore the lesser-known Angkor wonders • Visit the Landmine Museum and Made in Cambodia Market

An extra morning to explore Angkor allows us more time to venture even deeper into this vast, magnificent complex. We transfer one hour from our hotel to Banteay Srei, a temple often admired for its fine, deeply carved pink sandstone, work so detailed that archaeologists believe highly skilled craft specialists were involved.

On our return transfer (one hour) to Siem Reap, we stop after about 20 minutes to visit the Cambodia Landmine Museum, founded by Aki Ra, who has spent decades clearing landmines across the country. Exhibits provide vital context for Cambodia’s post-conflict recovery, and the museum also supports children affected by past ordnance.

Back in Siem Reap, and after time for lunch, we browse the Made in Cambodia Market, where artists and craftspeople sell responsibly produced textiles, ceramics, and artwork – the perfect spot to pick up authentic souvenirs made by local people. After, you’re free to further explore the shops and markets of Siem Reap or head back to the hotel for an afternoon pool dip.

Explore the natural beauty and spirituality of the Phnom Kulen mountains

Take an early breakfast and leave the hotel around 8am for our scenic two-hour drive through the beautiful Cambodian countryside to Phnom Kulen, a mountainous national park important to Khmer spiritual history, arriving ahead of the crowds.

We start at the River of a Thousand Lingas, where carvings in the sandstone riverbed symbolise blessings for the waters flowing toward Angkor.

The route continues to a reclining Buddha carved directly from the summit rock, before reaching the waterfalls, an inviting place to cool off (bring swimwear if you plan to swim).

A picnic lunch is served in a riverside hut, giving us time to take in the forest surroundings before returning to Siem Reap for a relaxed afternoon.

Food & Drink

Food is cheap in Cambodia and you can generally avoid the spicier dishes if you wish. Cambodian food is all about contrasts: sweet and bitter, salty and sour, fresh and cooked. It shares many dishes with its neighbours, and you’ll find noodle soup similar to Vietnamese pho, the refreshing salads and sour soups of Thailand, Indian-inspired curries, and noodles and stir fries handed down from years of Chinese migration.

From Cambodia’s days as a French Indochina colony, there’s a national love of coffee, pâté, and good bread. Baguettes are served with soup, made into sandwiches, and sold by vendors riding bicycles carrying baskets of long loaves. Western food is also available in most of the places visited.

Vegetarian food is widely available; however, the offering will be fairly similar in most places. Please advise at time of booking if you have any dietary requirements.

Transport

We use a comfortable private bus with air conditioning. Road conditions are generally good and improving all the time in Cambodia. There will, however, be the odd bumpy journey as roads are often being rebuilt due to the monsoon period.

Weather & Seasonality

The climate is hot and humid throughout with daytime temperatures usually 28C-34C (82F-93F). It is only a little cooler at nights. The dry season is late October to May and the monsoon is normally between May and October; though there is an obvious transitional time between those settled periods.

The dry season has hot days and generally clear skies, though you can expect the odd shower. The monsoon is characterised by short, sharp bursts of rain and is generally overcast all day though this does not detract from the enjoyment of the place; you just need to take an umbrella or buy a cheap poncho locally.

What To Take

Essential Equipment

  • Casual clothes. As it is generally hot and humid, light cotton clothing is recommended for most of the trip
  • You are expected to cover your legs and arms (to the elbow) during visits to temples. Sandals are useful as they are cooler and easier to take off when visiting temples and you will need comfortable footwear for exploring the Angkor complex
  • A first-aid kit is carried on each trip, but you should bring your own first-aid kit with diarrhoea treatment, painkillers, rehydration sachets, plasters (band-aids) and a blister treatment kit
  • Insect repellent is also highly recommended. Repellent containing DEET is thought to be highly effective
  • Large refillable water bottle
  • Sun hat and sunscreen
  • Swimwear
  • Light waterproof or an umbrella

We recommend packing only one piece of checked baggage. Advice about luggage allowances for both hand and hold luggage is subject to change, we suggest you check the airline website for the latest information prior to your departure.

Water included: Plastic bottles are a big issue in many countries where recycling isn’t yet widely available; they often end up in landfill or get burned. Both processes are harmful to the environment and we would like to reduce our impact here. For your trip, we provide an alternative to single-use plastic bottles to reduce the plastic used. This means that safe drinking water will be available throughout; all you need to do is bring a bottle to refill along the way. Please add this to your packing list.

If you have any space in your luggage, please check out our partner Pack for a Purpose (www.packforapurpose.org) to identify items needed by local schools and medical clinics. Your Tour Leader will happily assist with your donation.

Practical Information

Visa

Cambodia

Travellers from the UK, US and EU normally need a visa to enter Cambodia. Please note, visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.

Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.

Find more information at:

Important information: Cambodia e-Arrival Card (CeA)

All travellers arriving in Cambodia (via air only) are required to submit a Cambodia e-Arrival Card within seven days before their arrival. The Cambodia e-Arrival Card (CeA) is free and is replacing the requirement to complete paper forms when arriving at Cambodia Airports. The e-Arrival card is separate from visa/e-visa requirements.

How to fill out the e-Arrival card online:

  1. Visit the official website https://arrival.gov.kh/
  2. Fill out the form online or download the app, available or iOS and Android devices.
  3. Once the form is completed, you will receive a confirmation email with QR code.
  4. Take a screenshot, download or print the QR code.
  5. Present the QR code to the immigration upon arrival.

Vaccinations and Health

Cambodia

There are no required vaccinations. However, recommended vaccinations include hepatitis A, tetanus, typhoid, cholera, hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, rabies and tuberculosis. You will also need a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you’re arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission or transiting for more than 12 hours through a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Please confirm your vaccine recommendations and requirements with your doctor or travel clinic.

Dengue fever, a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes, is a known risk in places visited. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available, so take the usual precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

Methanol: The FCDO warns travellers to be cautious of methanol poisoning when travelling in destinations visited on the trip.

Local Time

Cambodia's time zone: Asia/Phnom_Penh (UTC +07:00)

Electricity

Cambodia's electricity: Plug types A (two flat pins), C (two round pins) and G (three rectangular pins) – 230V, 50Hz

Highlights of Cambodia

Money

Cambodia's currency: Cambodian riel (KHR); however, US dollars are widely accepted

ATM Availability

ATMs are widespread in cities and are the easiest way of obtaining money. They typically dispense US dollars. Credit card acceptance is common in the cities at restaurants and shops catering for tourists.

If you would like to bring cash, there will be ample opportunity for you to change this. British pounds and US dollars are both easily exchanged. As you will probably be carrying much of your money in cash, we strongly recommend using a money belt.

Extra Expenses & Spending Money

You will need about 600,000-800,000 Cambodian riel (US$150‐US$200) for all other meals, which will allow you to eat well. Apart from the food, you should allow money to cover drinks (more if you like a beer/alcohol) and souvenirs.

Optional excursions

There are some optional activities available, which your tour leader can help arrange for you and advise of costs locally. The below are approximate costs.

Optional experiences:

Phnom Penh

  • Mekong sunset cruise (two hours, minimum three people): from 99,700 riel (US$25)

Siem Reap

  • Phare Ponleu Slepak (Cambodian circus performance): from 72,000 riel (US$18)
  • One-hour body massage: from 140,600 riel (US$35)

Tipping

Tipping is entirely at your discretion but is customary in Cambodia. To take the hassle out of tipping, the tour leader will suggest you contribute to a tipping kitty of approximately US$20-US$27 per person. This is used by the leader to tip drivers, staff at hotels, local guides etc but it is not used at restaurants. If you do not wish to contribute to a central pool for tips you are, of course, free to do so.

In addition, a tip for the leader at the end of the trip is greatly appreciated if you are happy with the service you have received. As a guideline, we recommend a contribution of US$3 per day for your tour leader but this amount is just a suggestion and entirely up to you. Our local staff are paid well and fairly for their work.

Sustainability and Impact

As a certified B Corp, we’re on a mission to improve our social and environmental impact across all our adventures.

We do this through our innovative Thriving Nature, Thriving People plan.

This ‘nature positive’ approach is designed to help nature and communities thrive in harmony through practical solutions, such as reducing carbon and waste on our trips, supporting conservation projects through the Exodus Adventure Travels Foundation, and rewilding 100 square metres for every Exodus traveller.
