Hotel Asteria or similar Day 2 Morning tour of St Petersburg including Peter and Paul Fortress; free afternoon Our orientation tour starts at 9 AM, you will meet the guide in reception. St Petersburg is one of the finest and most extravagant cities in Europe and there's a lot to see. We start off at the Peter and Paul Fortress, founded by Peter the Great in 1703. Its cathedral now contains the tombs of the Romanov family, finally laid to rest here in July 1998, as well as other notable rulers from Russian history including Peter II and Catherine the Great. Returning to the city centre we will take a tour down Nevsky Prospect, the cities most famous street. Lined with some of the finest 18th and 19th-century buildings to be found anywhere in Europe, but with a distinct Russian influence. Highlights include the neoclassical Kazan Cathedral, the Stroganov Palace and the art nouveau Singer House, home to one of the finest bookstores in the world. The tour ends outside the Winter Palace, the official residence of the Russan Royal Family from 1732 to 1917, which now houses the Hermitage Museum. The museum is not part of our tour but the guide will stay and help you get tickets if you wish to visit. Otherwise, the afternoon is free. Hotel Asteria or similar Meals included: Breakfast Day 3 Free day to explore St Petersburg; Train to Moscow at 3:30, transfer to Moscow hotel Today is free to enjoy beautiful St Petersburg at your leisure. You may choose to take a relaxing canal trip or the hydrofoil out to the Peterhof Palace on the Gulf of Finland, famous for its step fountains and ornate gardens. While in the city itself there's the Church of the Savior on Blood, with its brightly coloured onion domes, or a Russia Museum, home to some of the finest pieces of art in Russia. At 3 PM you will be collected from the hotel and transferred to St.Petersburg-Glavny Station, from here we take the Sapsan highspeed train down to Moscow. Journey time is approximately 3hrs 55mins. Russia All nationalities require a visa for Russia. These requirements will vary depending on your nationality. For British nationals visa applications must now be made in person at a visa processing centre, located in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. At the time of application, fingerprints will be taken. We will be providing a new type of service to assist with the application process; however we will no longer be able to submit the application on your behalf. It is your responsibility to arrange a visa prior to travel, but we will provide you with more information after booking to help and advice with this. The cost of the visa is currently GBP108.40.
