You deserve this trip as a reward for all your hard work learning to cross-country ski: this is the fun bit!

We really felt that we had a taste of what it must be like to be Scandinavian on this holiday, making the most of the glorious scenery and winter activities (well, apart from being able to ski with the effortless ease of the locals, obviously!). The skiing is superb, on and off-track, rolling countryside with some achievable summits, beautiful scenery and barely any other people. We did so many things during this incredibly busy, varied week and enjoyed it all so much. We learned some animal tracks (and to identify droppings, who knew that the seasonal changes in moose poo was so interesting!), went into an ice cave behind a frozen waterfall, went night-skiing, cooked hot-dogs for lunch in a mountain hut and went snowshoeing. On the night in the wilderness hut, discovering how much we take water for granted was a real revelation. When you have chopped the wood made a fire, collected snow, melted it and then heated it up, you really appreciate your cup of tea!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The real sense of achievement on reaching the summit of Renfjallet (after lots of herring-boning uphill) and the fantastic views. Seeing herds of reindeer and a moose. The sauna with the best view in the world! Picnic lunch on the ice in the middle of a lake in brilliant sunshine, surrounded by spectacular mountains in total peace and quiet.

What did you think of your group leader?

Marieka was outstanding. She worked so hard to give a week to remember. She was great company and had a real knack for assessing mood of the group, when we needed to stop for a snack or when we were tiring and needed a boost. It was a very complicated itinerary but the whole week went astonishingly smoothly. She shopped for us, cooked for us, dealt with problems and remained unfailingly cheerful. There were some long days for us, but her days were even longer as she had to do all the organisation as well.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The night in the wilderness hut is not as daunting as it sounds. It was warm and comfortable (we had to have the window open all night as it was so hot with the stove going). There are loos, but they are of the hole-in-a-plank-over-a-pit variety! Take a head torch if you’ve got one although you can borrow one, and a vacuum flask. Use the saunas. The hotel, mountain lodge and wilderness hut all have saunas worth exploring and it really helps after a day’s skiing.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The food was superb everywhere we ate in Sweden. I need a gluten-free diet and this was readily available, and advertised on the menu, even in the mountain restaurant. We did have some accommodation issues at the start of the week, very satisfactorily sorted by the brilliant Exodus rep, Chloe, who travelled with us, and which should not be a problem on future trips. We were extremely impressed by how this was dealt with. Top marks to Exodus.

    Adventurous Sweden

This trip was so much more than a classic cross-country week. It was one of those holidays where at times you were pushed out of your comfort zone but the sense of achievement was well worth it! We climbed up 2 mountains on skis, skied in the dark and for one of the night lit a fire to heat a lakeside sauna and slept in a really cute wilderness hut.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Reaching the top of a mountain and seeing a herd of wild reindeer!

What did you think of your group leader?

Marieke was brilliant, patient, kind and inspirational!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

If you are looking for a ski trip with a difference this is it! You may even be lucky enough to see the northern lights.
