- This is a special photographic departure which guarantees every possible daylight hour is maximised with early starts and long days.
- An earlyish season departure meaning fewer vessels and a very flexible itinerary.
- The Magellan is best in its class and critically below 100 berths, ensuring maximum time ashore for passengers, not permitted to larger ships.
- The ship has superb facilities and cuisine, is new and has a superb staff, many of whom Paul has worked with.
- The expedition leader is fully aware and embraces what these special departures involve.
- It starts in the Falklands: crucial as it does not waste time at sea for two days sailing from Ushuaia.
- The Magellan Explorer is stable. And quick, vital for cutting down on sea days.
- Both Paul and many of the staff are accomplished photographers so there will be plenty of advice on board. Paul has been guiding these polar expeditions for 20 years.
- Early season finds the ice at its most beautiful and haunting.
- The journey finishes in Ushuaia again maximising precious time.

Shackleton’s Footsteps - A Photographic Expedition with Paul Goldstein: Falklands, South Georgia & Antarctica
October 28th, 2023
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success. This was Ernest Henry Shackleton's fabled rallying call for his epic expedition to the South Atlantic over a hundred years ago. Comfort levels, safety and indeed cuisine have changed immeasurably since those heroic days but the sense of adventure and discovery remains, particularly when embarking on the remarkable Magellan Explorer.
This new ship is not only superbly equipped it is also the correct size for such a voyage. When there are fewer than 100 people there are no limits on landings, vital for a photographic expedition. When you have the bounteous hours of daylight early November brings, you can rest assured that both Paul and the Magellan Explorer staff will maximise it. Weather can be capricious (at best) in the cold Atlantic so every possible opportunity has to be explored and maximised and this is where this magnificent ship and indeed Paul show inexhaustible supplies of energy.
On any expedition (it really isn't a cruise) the most priceless commodity is time, therefore a fast ship and flexible timetable is utterly critical. The extraordinary islands of the Falklands, the vast rookeries of South Georgia and the cobalt iceberg galleries of Antarctica are not fully appreciated when part of a brief clinical visit, in between rigorous mealtimes and shopping. To catch the first blush of dawn as it plants its pastel kisses on the faces of glaciers, icebergs and penguins is a sight unlike any others. To still be ashore six, seven or more hours later proves you are in the company of people and staff that understand why you have taken this long journey South.
Nobody arrives in these South Atlantic prolific strongholds by accident and no one leaves unaffected. You will need memory cards, lots of them, binoculars, and a mind fertile to the exciting variety of these faunal kingdoms. It haunted the likes of Wild, Worsley, Crean, Hurley and others, men who were never really comfortable back home. Come and find out why. So, in conclusion, permit me to reword the Boss's famous classified ad: Men and women wanted for adventurous journey. Variable weather, long hours of complete daylight. Those who like their itineraries rigorously cut and dried, need not apply, but the return date is guaranteed.
It will be an 'honour' to welcome you on board.
Paul Goldstein
Exodus guide, endangered wildlife campaigner and award-winning photographer Paul Goldstein has often said that he is happiest on the plains of the Masai Mara or the decks of a small ship in the Polar regions. Having completed over thirty expeditions, his choice for late autumn is the South Atlantic. Paul has a ridiculous amount of energy and is, as the Sunday Times described him, ‘a preposterously vivacious guide of almost psychotic gusto’. The Times said 'no-one will drag you up the photographic ladder quicker'.
Andy Parkinson
Joining Paul on onboard will be Andy - Nikon Europe Ambassador and a feature contributor to National Geographic magazine. One of Europe’s most acclaimed and respected photographers he has won over 100 National and International awards for his photography, most recently being named Grand Prize winner of the Big Picture Natural World Photography Competition, one of the most prestigious wildlife and conservation photography competitions in the world. His images have also been awarded four times in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards, five times in the GDT European Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards and in 2016, as well as winning two categories he was named as the overall winner in Bird Photographer of the Year.

Itinerary
Port Stanley, Falkland Islands Ushuaia, Argentina
You will be picked up at the Port Stanley Airport and transferred into town. There will be time to explore the town of Port Stanley before boarding the ship.
Meals included: Dinner
Two thrilling landings at two very different islands with most of Noah’s South Atlantic avian lot on show from albatrosses to penguins. West Point is not only dramatic but has Rockhopper penguins in large numbers.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
There will be no shortage of these regal penguins on this departure, hundreds of thousands of them but to find them on a sparkling white sand beach is very different.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
There is a whole team of experts specialising in history, cetaceans, pinnipeds, ice and photography waiting to fill these two days, ensuring everyone is ready for landfall in South Georgia. Once the cold water convergence is reached shortly after leaving the Falklands, there will be no shortage of birds trailing in the Magellan’s wake.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
An early Zodiac ride along the fertile crescent of Elsehul, a natural harbour with seals, penguins and petrels circling overhead. It is a spectacular hors d’oeuvre to the main course in the afternoon, the gravely named Right Whale Bay with its dramatic surf. It is one of the most photogenic landings on the whole island. Sometimes tricky to get in, it is really worth an extended landing.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Every polar guide and leader has their favourite rookery, but Salisbury, with the ability to get well above the colony remains the favourite with many. This captivating beachhead is ringed by distant snow capped mountains and has well over 100,000 Kings. Salisbury may involve repeated landings, but if there is time, Prion Island, with its nesting Wanderers, is potentially another landing. So graceful in the sky these vast birds are strangely clumsy on land.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
If there is not too much snow some people may do the bottom half of Shackleton’s famous final walk (without the glissade!), others can photograph on the delightful bays nearby. In the afternoon a short but mandatory visit to get passports stamped in Grytviken and to visit the museum and reflect on the triple legacy of Shackleton, whaling and the first shots of the Falklands war. There are also nesting light mantled Sooty albatrosses.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This is a very special landing and rightfully merits a whole day with multiple landings. The backdrop and frankly sheer number of birds makes this a staggering sight and has been known to devour literally millions of gigabytes. ‘Unique’ is an overused epithet in travel, not here.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Think hanging glaciers, elephant seals jousting in the surf and sand, King penguins marching in tight formations and you have this morning’s landing, it’s called Gold for a reason. Cooper Bay is enjoyed by Zodiac and offers probably the only chance to see the enigmatic Macaroni penguin.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
A chance to re-charge bodies, batteries and to continue with the ship’s on board presentation programme and to enjoy the outstanding facilities on board.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Throughout the sail South it is possible to see both castellated and tabular icebergs, some of them the size of small hamlets or villages. As the bow gets closer to the 7th continent these sculpted bergs may well be decorated by Adelie and Chinstrap penguins. Erebus and Terror Gulf has a huge Adelie penguin rookery for the first Antarctic landing.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Icebergs, Adelies and the Northern tip of the Continent.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Half Moon is dramatic and also a stronghold for Chinstrap penguins, although not a large island it has several very photogenic areas to enjoy. Deception Island is interesting historically but should the weather be calm the exposed landing prospect of Baily Head with 150,000 ‘Chinnies’ is intoxicating.
Meals included: Breakfast
Probably one of the best areas to witness Orcas and other whales even this early in the season. It is also home to some remarkable mountain scenery as well as many icebergs and Gentoo penguins.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Many have listed these two as personal favourites and it’s easy to see why. The view from the summit overlooking Paradise Bay is beautiful and being in Zodiacs negotiating the snap, crackle and pop of the ice in the bay is mesmerising. Neko is breathtaking with a large Gentoo colony, the harbour is normally choked by bergs but fairly sheltered. Like all these highlights, plenty of time is required to really immerse yourself and/or your camera in their delights. On this expedition you will get plenty.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This expedition is not over as thousands of birds from prions to pintados and petrels to albatrosses will trail the ship North. Staff will be on hand to ensure this journey is wrapped up in spectacular fashion.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Meals included: Breakfast

Travelling Conditions
The voyages are designed to be as flexible as possible, taking advantage of circumstances and events as they occur, as well as passengers’ wishes and particular interests wherever possible. The atmosphere onboard is relaxed and friendly with expedition staff, including naturalists and Polar experts, on hand and the opportunity to mingle with people from all over the world. The ship is kept warm, clean and comfortable with a wet/mud room in which to hang gear and store boots ready for the next adventure.
On the Zodiac cruises you are sitting still for most of the time with the potential for some sea spray and a cold headwind - if you are not dressed appropriately you will get cold. On the shore excursions, the majority of landings are ‘wet’ which means that the Zodiacs beach and you are helped to slide into the ankle deep shore break before walking up onto dry land (wellington boots are issued to all passengers).
There are, of course, no paths, so be prepared for slippery, rough terrain and sometimes fairly deep snow. Back on board the cosy ship after each adventure, you can have a sauna and/or a hot shower and then relax with a tea, coffee, hot chocolate or something stronger from the bar.

Itineraries are never clinical on a photographic expedition, the itinerary listed is merely a very rough outline as to what could be achieved but with bounteous daylight, long days and very early starts, it will garner far more time ashore in the action than more rigorous departures.
Following a review of all our trips we have categorised this trip as generally not suitable for persons of reduced mobility. However if you are a regular traveller on such trips, please contact customer services to discuss the trip and your personal condition.
