    GREENLAND'S NORTHERN LIGHTS

This was a a wonderful trip, full of amazing sights and 'wow' moments. Every day was exciting and action packed with little time to rest, but I took part in all that was offered and had a fantastic time. The vastness of this wilderness is awe inspiring.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

It has to be the sighting of a polar bear on the beach of Ella Island and on the same night seeing the Northern lights in the sky. For me as an artist, the scenery was mind blowing and I never tired of seeing icebergs of all shapes and sizes with turquoise streaks and caves inside. The fjord mountains were tremendous with their geological formations and coloured rocks. The contrast in colour between the icebergs and land was beautiful, both in the bright sunshine (we were lucky with the weather) and with mist patches drifting across them. On the evening of the top deck barbecue we had a glorious sunset that made the whole experience memorable. The flora on land was interesting with some tiny flowering plants in places and vivid orange lichen, so walking was never dull. Not many people spoke while they were walking, as we all just wanted to absorb everything. The cute arctic hares were everywhere so we learnt to 'stalk' them for some great photography. We were lucky to see other wildlife too - musk ox, seals and ptarmigan. The zodiac trips in and out of icebergs were fantastic too; in one place having perfect reflections in the still water.

What did you think of your group leader?

All the onboard staff were brilliant. They are highly qualified and hard working, and I cannot praise them enough. They kept us entertained with excellent lectures and Dutch led a fun recap and planning meeting for everyone at the end of every day.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

As a solo traveller I was a bit anxious about this trip, as I was sharing with two strangers in a triple cabin. There was no need as we got along fine and it's very interesting to meet other nationalities. I also fretted about taking the right clothes for dinner, so I'm writing a few things here. In the evenings it's smart casual, but apart for the first evening at port when it was hot, you need warm jumpers you can layer. I took my heavy walking boots as advised for around the ship, but didn't wear them as my neater and lighter fur lined boots with a flat rugged sole were fine. I also wore some light flat shoes down to dinner. As the air is so dry, if you wash anything and hang it up in the shower cubicle overnight, it's ready to wear in the morning. So don't take too many clothes, and no one notices what you are wearing anyway! Take a good camera because you never stop taking pictures. There were some very good wildlife photographers who uploaded their pictures to the onboard computer for the DVD. I added the best to a slideshow for friends and they were very impressed!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

One person was disappointed with the whole trip because he saw few birds, but if you appreciate wild places, this is the trip for you. Go for it!
