Lodge Safari

A fabulous trip, very well organised to include many different areas. We saw 4 of the Big 5, but not the elusive leopard! Our guide Adonia was very knowledgeable about every aspect of these beautiful countries, and together with Sifiso our driver we learned and saw a lot. Both were very patient and kind and went out of their way to make the holiday special, always with a great sense of humour. Quite a tough going trip with early starts and a couple of long drives but well worth it.

Most Inspirational Moment

Probably the young girl who showed us around the Painted Dog sanctuary. She was passionate about her work and positive in very challenging circumstances. All the people involved in the holiday were very warm and welcoming.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Adonia was amazing. He was very knowledgeable about all aspects of these two beautiful countries and enthusiastically passed on his knowledge. Together with Sifiso our driver, they made sure we had a great time, always with patience, kindness determination and humour. Very special people, and great assets to Exodus.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Some long drives and early starts so get to bed early!

Amazing adventure

This trip is perfect – 5 days’ trekking in the beautiful Atlas mountains with optional extra peaks to stretch yourself. It was an unforgettable trip of a lifetime.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to the top of Mount Toubkal was very special. The views and sense of achievement were amazing. Another highlight was climbing an optional peak and running down the scree. Very exhilarating!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Omar was an excellent leader. He went out of his way to make sure that everyone was enjoying the trip. He was very informative about local geography and culture. Abdul, assistant leader was also very friendly and helpful. We felt so well looked after. I can't praise them enough!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Highly recommended- a fantastic trip.

Excellent week on Tour du Mont Blanc!

The week was very well organized and very well led by Egle. The accommodation and food were great and each day’s walk was an adventure.

Most Inspirational Moment

The best moment was when we reached the Grand Col Ferret, with stunning views of the glaciers and the valley ahead.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Egle was very good. She did not rush us and she allowed the faster walkers to go ahead, while keeping an eye on everyone. Her relaxed manner allowed us all to enjoy the week. One of our party fell and badly gashed her head. Egle was very calm and patched her up as much as possible. We then helped the injured person walk about a kilometre to the next refuge where Egle called for a helicopter. I would be happy to do another tour with Egle as leader.

Advice for Potential Travellers

My advice would be to only carry two sets of clothes, one for walking and one for the evening. I think it would be helpful to put this advice in the Exodus literature.

Unspoilt part of Italy at its best

Well planned itinerary and plenty of free time. Very beautiful part of Italy not generally frequented by a lot of British tourists, compared to other Italian towns, and well worth visiting. You wont be disappointed. Excellent food, as you would expect.

Most Inspirational Moment

Can't say there was an "inspirational moment" as such, but every bit was enjoyable and glad I did this trip. I would thoroughly recommend it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent, as you would expect.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You don't have to do the suggested group meals in the evening and there are other alternatives on the free day (Tuesday) at Alberobello besides the suggested places to visit. Alternatives included visiting towns closer by (like Locorotondo or Martina Franca), going further afield to Monopoli or the caves (as per the tour notes, or just spend the day in Alberobello. The wine tasting (which included a museum and presentation) was good (excellent wine) and a light meal was included with it. Whilst Alberobello is pretty, it is very tourist and I would recommend looking at it first think in the morning or after the shops have shut when it is a lot quieter... especially on the way to the breakfast restaurnt. You see Alberobello at its best, beautiful and tranquil, not bustling with people. Some of the shops have panorama terraces on their roof too, and besides the viewing balcony mentioned in the guide books, there is also a garden that has good views of the Monte Rione district too. None of the hotels have hotels so the only option of swimming is at the beaches of the towns visited briefly (Polignano a Mare and Otranto), but there was a pool at one place guests could use staying in designated trulli houses from company Exodus use. The trulli houses for Exodus guests were scattered at various places all over the town so no one was next to or close to each other, and breakfast was a a central restaurant in town. Regarding Ostuni and the masserias, Exodus had taken on board the feedback on the reviews of former customers on their website and had arranged taxi (at no extra cost to the customer) back to Ostuni for those who didn't want to do (or couldn't manage) the 6 km walk to the town, which is well worth noting. Even if you can manage the 6 km walk, one thing you need to consider (apart from the hthiseat), is that time in Ostuni is limited to just the rest of the day and evening as we moved on the following morning. We left the second masseria about 2.30 (after lunch); the taxi journey is about 10 minutes to Ostuni; the walk was around 2 hrs, so you need to weigh up valuable usage of the time as whilst part of the group did the walk, the others of us who took a taxi spent time in a lovely gelateria and walked around the town walls viewing the countryside... after checking in at the hotel and our rooms too. T There are plenty of local produce food shops everywhere, especially local producers of olive oil in Ostuni, so don't feel you have to buy it at the masseria visited in the Ostuni countryside (although you can, it was very nice) and the prices in those shops in Ostuni weren't any different. Puglian olive oil is very good, and there are a lot of olive groves around the area. The cookery lesson at the masseria near Ostuni wasn't as I had expected; due to Covid we couldn't really do much! The Sassi districts of Matera are stunning and it is very difficult to stop walking around them and taking in the views. The views from the hotel used is spectacular. We felt rushed to get to the cathedral in Otranto when arriving there, as we were late leaving the Osuni that morning (the luggage was late leaving the hotel). Otherwise the whole tour itself wasn't rushed. There were two guided city walks (Matera and Lecce),otherwise the tour leader gave brief orientation walks of the towns on arrival most of the time. In Lecce there are plenty of museums, but I (and a couple of others) visited the Museum Faggiano) which was fascinating and apart from the excavations and exhibits, etc, had a fascinating story behind it of how it came to be, which made it all the more interesting. It's a small museum not far away from the city gate you enter the city by, from the walk from the Eos Hotel to the city centre. Finally, electric plugs and sockets - I took a European plug adaptor, which unfortunately didn't work in a lot of sockets in the hotels and trulli house (and others in the group found the same). Whilst it did work in most bathroom sockets, there were no sockets it fitted at the Hotel Eos. However the hotel Eos were very helpful and lent be a plug I could use to charge my mobile phone (which I used as a camera throughout the holiday). I would suggest bringing a multi-country adaptor, or several adaptors. Their sockets are 3-pin that take the smaller rounder pins; although the two pins will work, the thicker two pins won't work. You don't need to bring a hairdryer with you, everywhere we stayed at had them.

Botswana and Zimbabwe Lodge Safari

A very enjoyable trip, during which we saw an abundance of wildlife including 4 of the Big 5. Our group leader Adonia, and our driver Sifiso were great. They were very knowledgeable about all the flora and fauna we saw. There were a couple of very long, but unavoidable, drives. However, we were still wildlife spotting during these and Adonia used this time to talk about the history and culture of both Botwana and Zimbabwe. Our trip into the Okavango Delta was quite different from the rest of the trip but very enjoyable. Listening to the sounds of the wild animals at night was an experience never to be forgotten. On the full day in the delta there was a lot of downtime between the early morning game walk and the late afternoon Mokoro trip. Another game walk during the day would have been a good idea. Special thanks to Adonia and Sifiso for their patience, humour and thoughtfulness.

Most Inspirational Moment

One of the surprises of the trip was seeing a giraffe very soon after having left the airport at Victoria Falls.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very approachable and knowledgeable. Well organised. Adonia proved to be a very effective leader of the group.

Could Have Been Better

It was an interesting trip but spoiled by a poor group leader. It was an interesting trip but spoiled by a poor group leader.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Although Genc was very pleasant and easy to get along with, I found his qualities as a tour leader left a lot to be desired. His grasp of English was poor and so were his organisational skills. First of all, he was late meeting us on our arrival in Tirana. It then took him a long time to locate our bus and driver. When we reached our hotel, having had a very early start that morning, we were all ready to go to a cafe for some lunch, but we just had to grab a quick takeaway coffee before setting off on a long walking tour of the city. It soon transpired that we were not expected to have lunch on any day. A quick pit stop was all that had been allowed for on the itinerary. It was not that we needed a large meal, but a rest and some nourishment was essential. When visiting the various sites, it would have been useful to have had Quiet Vox earphones, or similar, so that we could hear what Genc had to say. As it was, he did not gather us together in a group for any explanation but would forge ahead so that only those walking directly beside him could hear him. We could also have done with more information on timing each day so that we knew what to expect. I realise that roads are sometimes bad and museums, etc, are sometime unexpectedly closed but I would have expected him to get this information on the day and then let us know if and how plans had changed. The day I really lost faith in him was in Berat, where, having gone up to the castle by bus, we then had to walk down a very long and slippery cobbled road back to town to visit a museum. Although I could easily walk uphill, I found it difficult to walk down without falling and so I fell behind the rest of the group. I was not too concerned about this as I believed that Genc would wait at the bottom until we had all arrived. As it was, by the time I reached the town there was no sign of them. Luckily, I had obtained a good street map from the hotel that morning and so, after walking on for some way before realising that I must be going in the wrong direction, I got it out and made my way to the museum. By that time my absence had been noted and Genc was frantically looking to see where I was. He apologised profusely but I do feel that as group leader it was up to him to ensure that the group, especially such a small one, kept together.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make it clear from the start that you need a proper lunch break in the middle of the day.

Amazing week walking in the very beautiful Norwegian Fjords

As a first time hiker I was worried about what to expect from this trip but I shouldn’t have been. Spent a truly amazing week hiking varied and incredibly beautiful landscapes, interspersed with some breathtaking ferry trips. The pace was manageable (although I did start with a good base fitness) and there were often options to shorten or lengthen walks depending on capability but this was always optional. Nes Gard itself is a truly special place and perfect for an escape from real life. Waking up to the view of fjord everyday was such a contrast to living in the UK. The staff at Nes Gard are lovely and evenings were spent eating fab local food and then drinking and catching up in the bar with new found friends. This is the perfect holiday if you want a break from reality, a chance to unwind and to see some truly beautiful scenery as well as the chance to make some amazing friends.

Most Inspirational Moment

There are too many to really mention but the two stand out moments were getting to the top of the mountain on the first day and looking down over the Fjord. The sun was shining and the water was an incredible turquoise. Our group had laughed and bonded all the way up the mountain and there was a huge sense of achievement at the top. The second was on the last day at the waterfall. We'd all spent an amazing week with each other and there was a poignancy that it was our last day together. The waterfall was magnificent and the scenery breathtaking- it was my favourite hike and it was sad that it was the last.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Anders was a really fantastic group leader. He was knowledgable, kind, funny and you knew you were safe with him. He went above and beyond to spend time with the group, flex the schedule to take is to the bakers for cinnamon buns and overall look after us. He never pushed anyone to their limit and took time to understand the individual needs of the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You do have to have a base level of fitness for this trip to really enjoy it. Some of the ascents would be tricky in the rain and the terrain is full of rocks so you also need to be steady on your feet. That said in out group there were 4 people over 70 who managed just fine and had a great time!

Fantastic TMB

Like a previous reviewer I found this much harder that Toubkal or EBC. The walks seem to be up all morning and down in the afternoon. Some of the downs were very hard on the Knees. Despite this the effort was well rewarded with the stunning scenary. Having to put your tent away before brerakfast required some effort, specially if you didn’t master the technique. Camp meals were always filling, and never went hungary. Although breakfast did get a bit repetitive. The group van always contained a cold beer at the end of the day, which was very welcome. I hired my sleeping bag and matt from exodus and the bag was nice and warm, but maybe the matts could have been a bit thicker. Really felt the rocks some nights. Would bring my own next time

Advice for Potential Travellers

Train harder than you think you need. Wifi in camps were not brillant, could be aproblem if you need it at all times. If your not feeling to good, and need a day off from walking, it can be a long trip. One of our group needed 5 buses on one day, to get to the next camp

What an experience!

If you are short on time but love adventure, this is a great trip. The trek is challenging, you will need decent boots, and beware of the slippery scree but well worth the hard work. The night in the Refuge was quite the experience, a 16man bunk bed and breakfast at 2.20am so we could get to the top for sunrise. Hussain (our guide) and Lassan (the support guide) were great. I had a nasty bout of altitude sickness at the Refuge and Hussain took me higher to try and conquer it and feel better. The mountains are beautiful, the chef kept us well fed and time for a whiz round Marrakech too. Highly recommended.

Most Inspirational Moment

The care and support to get everyone safely to the top and down again.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was great, hard working, friendly, shared good advice and looked after us really well.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Wear decent hiking boots, pack for four seasons in a day, take large capacity water bottles. Change money in the airport or at Hotel Ali in the main square. Argana in Marrakech has lovely icecream and wifi and Les Jardins Majorelles are beautiful.

Outstanding

A simply outstanding trip. Our guide Eva was informative, friendly and helpful. A lovely small group of people made the trip very friendly and low key. All the sites we visited were just amazing. Lovely hotels, fabulous sights and sounds and awe inspiring insights into living history. Stunning.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking through the corridor onto the stadium at ancient Olympia; seeing the oracle at Delphi; the Corinth canal; the theatre at Epidavros; climbing up to the Acropolis. Honestly - too many to choose !

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fabulous. Eva was wonderful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It’s very uneven underfoot at times - you definitely need proper walking shoes/sandals. In September it was still very hot so make sure you have a refillable water bottle. Be prepared for some days to be more strenuous than others
